Yep. Shows like VeggieTales and ReBoot existed before too. It's why I call Toy Story the first "theatrical" fully CG animated movie, because while it was the first fully CG movie to premiere in theaters, it definitely wasn't the first of its kind. Marvelous!
When you really think about it, this was probably the most brilliant episode (or segment) of The Simpsons ever made. Not only is it hilarious, but it’s also incredibly smart and profound as a microcosm of the concept of discovering and struggling with the understanding of a higher dimension that you weren’t previously aware of or able to perceive. That’s probably the highest, most heady concept Simpsons ever tackled, and they did it in a way that’s completely accessible, enjoyable and gives you a real tangible sense of what dimensions are all about. Then you throw in the technological and artistic innovation of the 3D animation, and it’s just downright mindblowing. It gives you a great respect for how the writers on the show at the time really had a good instinct for how to take advantage of a blossoming art-form at the time, and use it in a way that becomes a symbol of the evolution of animation, while also serving as a science lesson, while also serving as a horror story, while also serving as a comedy, while also getting in a pop culture reference that is still relevant today... 90s Simpsons is one of the best things to ever happen.
I loved it because in a way it’s a take on our perception of 3D beings entering the 4th dimension. I’m so glad they decided to go with a concept so interesting and mind bending!
Yes, it is. He walks out of an area of deep shadow into an area of full light atleast twice with absolutely no change in lighting. It WAS, however, extremely impressive at the time, it hasn't dated terribly.
I work in VFX/animation, and I agree that modern films abuse CGI, absolutely, but if this geometry was re-rendered with modern linear/hdri lighting and physically accurate shaders it would look much more integrated. Would that make it better though? I am not sure. The fact that Homer does not properly integrate with the environment is probably one of the reasons it works because it avoids any uncanny valley issues.
That's interesting. I wonder what productions the PDI guys helped the most or handled almost exclusively. Generally when there's a B team there are different projects produced at the same time. I'm so fascinated by this early 3D stuff. We have it so easy now.
@@isaiahdaniels5643 PDI worked on all DWA films from Antz (1998) to Penguins of Madagascar (2015) excluding the films co-produced by Aardman (Chicken Run, Wallace and Gromit, and Flushed Away)
Was hoping to hear some backstory on the Myst cameo in this episode. The model in the episode is identical to the game and they also used the music- I'm interested if they collaborated with Cyan on this.
I have never knew that PDI did the whole computer animation for The Simpsons, TOO THINK PDI would help DreamWorks made bunch of their movies including Shrek.
When I see this 90s CGI, I was thinking it was made using Silicon Graphics computer and it did, Toy Story also used this workstation and both this Simpsons episode and Toy Story were released in the same year in 1995, but this Simpsons episode came first even before Toy Story was released, and not to mention, this 3d scene was animated at PDI, a DreamWorks company.
Yeah same each time I saw that episode I was scared , not because of "it was 3D and that looked weird" (I've played the Road Rage game before seeing that for the 1st time if I remember correctly) but more like it was very like weird to see a 2D character transforming into a 3D version (I think that's why I find that section to be the Scariest part of Any Treehouse of Horror Episode EVER (you got one shot to make the viewers have that feeling of Freaks at a Time were Toys Story was going into theatre one month before Halloween & they nailed it) )
there is this sadness to it too, with the music and all that and how they know homer is never coming back and to see homer scared and confused in this new world.
If I saw homer in real life, This Guy Who Is Yellow, has a big mouth, Big eyes with a single dot, who else would invite them in to there home & let them live there forever?
Looking at a 3d looking Bart Simpson reminds me of a small screened 5 and a half minute video of a bald man interviewing a 3d model Bart Simpson from the old Google Video search engine that was made around 2006 or 2007. Man, I wish someone can make or find a reuploaded/recreation video link of a 5 and a half minute video I was talking about so that I can right click and save it to mp4 since it's not there on the new Google Video search engine.
I love how passionate these people sound, this is one of the best episodes
This was first aired 1 month before the American release of Toy Story

the episode is good because is good or because it has cgi? the episode woul had the same impact if the another dimension was made in 2d?
I loved it because in a way it’s a take on our perception of 3D beings entering the 4th dimension. I’m so glad they decided to go with a concept so interesting and mind bending!
Late to the party, but this is a beautifully worded comment!
I still believe this and the cgi in Jurassic Park still look way better than a lot we see today. This scene still holds up
this was my absolute favorite
What about the part where homer said the animations really expensive, and stands for 5 seconds?
Is it wrong to say that the live action scene in this episode looks more believable than most movies today abusing CGI?
Not in the slightest
Yeah I agree
1995 vs 2020

For 1995 this is all super impressive
Way ahead of its time. That's why i always think and for Toy Story the same.
In 2001 Pdi won some awards for their work on water and other fluids simulation in Shrek
I just randomly remembered this scene from years ago, this is some real art.
PDI went on to do DreamWorks CG movies until they merged to create PDI/DreamWorks then PDI closed down in 2015
Nicholas M Daskievige dreamworks is closed down?
Team F Bomb no, just pdi

Fun fact:in treehouse of horror xxxi’s toy gory they used the design from homer 3
Who else called this episode "Homer Cubed"?
I always thought that was the name.
Was hoping to hear some backstory on the Myst cameo in this episode. The model in the episode is identical to the game and they also used the music- I'm interested if they collaborated with Cyan on this.
This Treehouse of Horror segment always reminds me of the Jimmy Timmy Power Hour

so much nostalgia, the 3d world mesmerized me as a kid, the background music too
When I first saw this episode, it freaked me out so much 😬

It still freaks me out because of how ahead of its time it was.
Homer: "Help me! Are you helping me or are you going on and on?"
Thank you dreamworks for doing this
I still can’t believe Dreamworks did this! 😱😱
Holy macaroni!
If you look the the store windows you can see the actor who is dressed like homer.
This episode is what got me into 3D art
Incredible, this is the BEST Halloween episode. Should make more 3D episodes
Would Simpsons be considered DreamWorks with PDI doing the CGI segment in this outside of Disney now owns it including others?
I doubt it since PDI closed its doors and DreamWorks now contracts out its projects.
I wonder if anyone still has that original model of Homer.
"DID ANYONE SEE THE MOVIE TRON?"
Yes..... I mean no
The Same CGI They Made Shrek. The Bad Guys. Antz And Trolls
No dislike everyone must love the simpsons
Zenon modern simpsons is bad. Oldschool simpsons is the best.
One of my fav episodes

Homer: "Oops!!"

Wow 95?. I never seen this this looks 2015 or something. I started watching Simpsons in 96.
LOL
I remember seeing the show when I was a kid I thought it was amazing. I still think it is.
Bat's hair haunts me to this day
I wonder what Lisa, Marge, Maggie and all the other Simpson Characters would look like if they went into the cgi world.
Not drastically different than how they look in one the 3D Simpsons video games I imagine, like say Simpsons Hit & Run.
Great cgi😊
I wanted to see more simpsons in real life
ah old dvds
Very interesting.
D'oh bart
#RevivePDI
Toy Story anyone?
This came out before that film, but if you wanna go even further back, there's shows like VeggieTales and ReBoot.
