if you use mirror tool and it pastes in same position, make sure in 'Direction' tab of mirror tool you have origin set to World, coords to View and Mirroring + To -. it worked for me
I ran into a problem. First of all let me just mention that I'm not a pro rigger. Anyways, If I use a pole on bones, and rotate the Ik the whole Arm would rotate, but on spline Ik this only happens when the Arm is bent, with bones the arm could be straight too. (In both cases the pole is parented under the Ik Controller.
Not sure I'm following what you mean, but you could always rotate the Spline (and the goal/pole) and do the same thing as rotating the IK joint chain, is that what you mean?

Had an issue with the mirroring tool so hope this helps someone else! First couldn't find the character drop down in the top bar menus, had to go to Window -> Customisation -> Menus -> Cinema4d Menu. Then for mirroring, mine wouldn't work until i had it on Origin: World - Coords: World - Axis: X(YZ) - Mirroring: - To +
great tutorial, as a beginner in C4d i learned a lot from your channel, million Thanks, but there are many steps on the video that I didn't catch because of the speed of the explanation until I replayed it for many times, I will appreciate alote if you can consider beginners for your next videos.
Hi EJ. When using the Mirror tool for some reason when I do it. It just copy it to the same position and doesn't flip to the right. Any idea why this is not working? Thanks
Another option is to Duplicate the Leg, place it in a Symmetry object, click the Flip button, and then delete the Symmetry object and it'll leave you with a flipped leg
Hey EJ, great tutorial (per usual). I'm a little late to the party, but you taught me quite a bit about rigging. Something I encountered, which I'm unable to understand as to how this occurred, was that when I went to use the mirror tool, the resulting mirrored duplicate did not align itself on the opposite side of the body, but instead was affixed to its center. Furthermore, the resulting mirrored duplicate was smaller than the original. I ended up just repeating the process for the left arm but am a little confused as to how this happened. Any insights you have on this would be super appreciated. Cheers, and thanks for giving so much to the Cinema 4D community!
Hey EJ I'm finding this method of rigging really glitchy in r21, when I undo/redo values the rigged limbs start spazzing in and out of the correct position, sometimes warping the completely wrong direction. Any thoughts?
Why when i use the Mirror Tool on the R Arm, it create the L arm but it remains in the same position of the R Arm? someone can help me please? thank you
thanks for this tutorial... it was all i needed.. but i have a question that i think u didnt mention in the video.. the right arm and leg have a label of.... i suppose.. is a joint between the lemon body and the begining of the leg and arm that mantain all toguether in their place when i move the body so... in wich menu or where can i found that label?
Hi EJ, I am looking for a way to control a mouth from a model with a spline. So, the mouth is modeled, over one edge loop from the lips there's a spline with the same amount of points - and I want to connect them in a way. Do you have a solution for that? I've seen people doing this in Maya and I really hope some smart guy like you ;-) is able to do the same thing in C4D too!
Love your tutorials! I am following along with this and building a cute little apple to do the walk cycle....just wondering, how did you model the leaf???
Vanessa Shipe thanks! It’s modeled using a cube and subdivision surface modeling! I have a tutorial on this subject! It’s got the Mario mushroom and LEGO head on it
Yo! Quite nice! Already applied on a rig. Awesome! Wondering if this principle may be applied on a hand/fingers rig? BTW, thnx for all the knowledge shared on your site/channel and GSG and SOM and everywhere..
Hello, I have some problems with character rigging. I use as normal bones and my problem is using the weight tool, when I try too make a perfect bend with the weight tool it look realy weird and the polygons are going everywhere. The main question is, please do you make a rigging tutorial with weight tool and bones.
You'll need to create a Pole object inside the IK tag to fix that. Sometimes when you set the goal it can act a bit weird. Create a Pole, and basically what the Pole does define where that "knee point" points to, or which direction it points to. Once you hit the "Create Pole" button and move that Null around, you'll get an idea for what I mean. Let me know if that helps!
How can I make a chain bend any direction I move the Null? It always bends one direction I can change with the pole but I'm making a tentacle which should be able to bend any way it wants... Could you help me? Very complete video btw ♥
hey! first of all thanks for all your work it really helps me a lot, your tutorial are really well done. i still have a little problem with rigging my character tho : lets say instead of a lemon i want to rigg a banana because i need to bend his body, i used a spline and ik same as the arm and foot. how can i do to connect the arm to make them follow the bending of the body? i think its not really complicated but i searched on the internet and found nothing (if its possible without using bones) so if you have an idea it will be really cool. thanks again and sorry if i made some English mistake ^^
Hey there! For the bend in the body I would use tradional IK with Joints so that you could then parent the arms to one of the joints and then it would bend with it. I dont believe this is possible with the Spline IK route...
Awesome! Hi i am your subscriber & regular viewer. I successfully completed your Lemon guys tutorial. Now i feel the need a human character model & its rig & animation. Please make a tutorial on these
the goal null works fine when the leg is bent but when it straightens the foot turns to point back instead of forward... I tried to bend the knee before adding the IK and the same thing happens. I think the problem may be in the spline wrap but I don't know what to do!
yo man, good tutorial thanks, question tho, when i create my loop, it seems there is a stutter in the animation, and my first and last keyframes are the same...any suggestions would be appreciated, thanks!
Hello, I know i'm late for a question to thi tutorial but I'm trying to put a little glove into my characters arm rig but the hand won't respect the ik movement/rotation. I tried putting the glove as a child and the Goal as a parent and selecting align goal and it works and looks good even on preview render but when I do a full render the glove appears rotated. Any help appreciated!
Thanks pal! Yep It works. Figured. Now I got another weird problem. In viewport knees are bend in correct direction, even in "render to viewport" it's ok.. but on final rendering (to picture viewer) it's backwards!!! wtf? Yes, I added poles.. not helping :) Any ideas?
This is an odd bug that happens that MAXON is now aware of. The only work around is to go to the IK tag and on the Pole vector change the Twist to 180º.
Is it possible in any way to export spline IK rigged animation to Unity? I tried exporting as FBX but the whole thing just crumbled like dried lemon zest.
Hi fellow artists and designers I need your help with some diffculties I'm having in C4D: i've modelled and rigged a siren for a short film, and I'm trying to set the physics with the hair in order to make it solid. The problem is that after doing some IK in the hair (because it's made with tentacles) I activated the dynamics on that, but I realised that It doesn't collide with the skin. When I enable the collider in the dynamic menu inside that IK tag and chose the mesh as a collider object it gets crazy, I assume thats because the joints are trying to escape from the inside of the object. I'm sure there must be a obvious way to fix this but I'm baffled because I can't find any solution. Thanks for you help guys I really appreciate any advice on this!
If you have joints that are close to the collider that could be an issue, another thing to look into is upping the Dynamics simulation settings in the Project > Dynamics menu. Upping Steps per Frame should help! Also adjust the dampening/drag on the IK dynamics might help tame it as well. Hope that helps! Anyone else have any ideas?

As a side question: I've been looking at after effect's plugins like rubberhose 2 and duik, and I want to achieve the same rubbery effects to be able to make simple cartoons, but I want to do it in Cinema 4d, would the spline IK technique with flat objects be a good way to go? and also, is there a way that I can take layer from say Krita (or the like) and use them in C4d as I would in say Toonboom or after effects for animation?

Oh my god, you have showed everything in 17 minutes. Thank you very much
This is useful :D, didn't even know that you could rig with splines, seems so much simpler.
Way easier than weighting and joints, right?!
Yeah :D, I guess you have a little bit more control if you could do weighting, I'm sure that's possible somehow.

How to make such a cool black and blue layout in cinema 4d?
Hello, I have some problems with character rigging. I use as normal bones and my problem is using the weight tool, when I try too make a perfect bend with the weight tool it look realy weird and the polygons are going everywhere. The main question is, please do you make a rigging tutorial with weight tool and bones.
Yep, weighting is always a pain in in the butt and is so different depending on the model & joint setup!
did you try to define bone's falloff shape also?
Where can I get the lemon model?
My spline wrapped legs flip 90 degrees when I start moving that goal null forward and up.
Let me know if that helps!
same issue.but after I created Poles my both arms still filp over and over...god help me..
The Pole doesnt work!
The pole doesn't work.. I guess this rigging is only suitable for capsule type of hands?
Try playing around with the Spline Wrap axis. Sometimes it's just not aligned in the right way.
Awesome tutorial! Do you know if there's a way to rig arms and legs with the same technique on Maya?
Noooo idea, I've never used Maya!
what is the plugin you're talking about to center the axis in just one click?
Is there a way to control the direction the elbow/knee points?
yessir, if you watch the tutorial where I'm talking about Pole Vectors, that's your answer!
How can I make a chain bend any direction I move the Null? It always bends one direction I can change with the pole but I'm making a tentacle which should be able to bend any way it wants... Could you help me? Very complete video btw ♥
You should look up making an IK Spline in that case of a tentacle!

Hey, love your tutorials... I have a question, is it possible to do it with a 3 part arm? (like a robot arm)?

Try using a Cloner to clone the hand on the arm spline and adjusting the offset, should work well!
After I add Spline Wrap and make in the child of an object (capsule) the whole object became displaced. That's not happening in your tut. Why is that?
make sure you have the correct orientation either X, Y, or Z setup on the spline wrap and make sure the spline wrap is only affecting the Capsule

I'd start over because it sounds like you may have missed a step or you may need to play with the Spline Wrap's orientation settings.
Thanks for responding. I tried starting over and the same problem occurs. Which settings would you suggest playing with?
Can you do one on model ing.
I plan on it!
is there a way I can rig a model if all the parts were already merged into one object?
For that you'd need to rig it the traditional way using Joints and Weighting.
