gatekeeping is what keeps 40k good, every single other franchise nose dived as hard as it could the moment they gave it to tumbler fan fiction writers when CEO's thought cheap writing was a good investment over the integrity and foundational lore of the IP itself... 40k though does have a few people that needed to get a smack from time to time... looking at you Matt Ward.... prepare yourself though... the DEI banks and ESG loans are coming for this next and female space marines will suddenly happen through some hand wavey BS of Belisarius Cawl and they will be better than all the other space marines. where even the lowest rank one is going to be lifting up necron pylons and smashing the face of tyranids with it like it was a battle mace. and the empire will suddenly see the error of its way and be friends with the tau and aeldari. slanesh will turn out to be the only good chaos god and is just misunderstood, everything slanesh will then be painted in pink, white and light blue and pride parade all over khorne to save humanity from the bigots. the emperor will be killed and thrown in a ditch for a communist socialist regime and the beacon of light that guides humanity through the warp will just work because these tumbler writers didnt even think about how to fix it.

Every good story has an end. Lord of the Rings. The Hobbit. Harry Potter. The Chronicles of Nath Dragon. Shadow and Bone. The Harbinger of Doom. The Dwarf Series.... Every one of them ended after the story was over.
Sure, they had epilogues and prologues, and maybe some even had spin-offs. They certainly did enrich the story and that's well and all, but that's the thing.
They all had their moments. They had a plot. They had an antagonist. They had a timeline to follow, they had a climax at one point in their stories, then the crisis is solved, the apocalypse is averted and our heroes leave as the story closes around us.
But not 40k. No....... no no nooo... The reason I enjoy 40k is because it's endless. Its still ongoing. There are threats ever rising. There is war and fighting and action without end. The heroes leave after a story. Of course they do, they're moving on to the next battlefield, the next threat. The characters are varied....
    And the lore!
The lore. There's SO MUCH lore, i cant seem to get enough of it. I think thats what attracted me to 40k. Endless lore, something i can take to enrich my whole life.
Sure, if books popped out for the other series I'll be thrilled just as much. Even if it was the 27th book of LOTR where "Frodo and friends meet with the delegates of the Men of the East of Middle-Earth", I'd read that. Of course, it might get tiring after a while, and some might even get disillusioned with the setting.
So yes. Its entertaining, and i love the infinite lore. Thank you for listening to my TedX talk.
TL;DR....... it's the lore that got me hooked into Warhammer 40k amd Fantasy. Not so much AoS.

I'm pretty new to Warhammer in general and still have never played the table top game. But what I find special about 40k is that it's a sci-fi/fantasy universe but everything is turned up to 11 out of 10. Everything is huge, everything is over the top there's a crap ton of factions and stories and lore all tuned up to the highest possible level. Which at times feels like its pushing on the edge of silly, or too over the top. But that commitment to epicness and scale creates some sort of magic that I never experienced elsewhere in fiction. It just hits different

First real interaction with WH was when I was looking around B&N for a new book and bought a random 40K book cause I was curious. That book was "Know No Fear" by Dan Abnett, one of the best 40K books and one I reread even after all these years. 40K may not have a solid beginning to read but god damn is it a lore you can get thoroughly absorbed in no matter where you enter.

Got into warhammer just a few months ago and I’m now obsessed with the lore of it. I remember I discovered warhammer a while back when I was like 9 when I was watching a youtuber modding a game called tabs( totally accurate battle simulator). At that time I didn’t really get into it and it was only now after graduating from primary school during the holidays my interest for warhammer grew. I started by watching some UA-cam shorts than watching major kill and tts which eventually got me into this

For me, I first got into 40k in 2019. I watch this SCP lore channel called The Exploring Series, and he started a small video series on 40k beginner's lore. (He actually started doing 40k lore again recently, very cool) I decided to check it out on my phone while I was waiting for my high school class to start, and I was enthralled. My favorite sci-fi series at the time was Destiny, but 40k would overtake it in the following years. For me, medieval-style imagery and stories pushed into the future was why I like Destiny (and still do), and 40k pushes that aesthetic to another level, which is why it is now my favorite world. I started collecting minis in late 2021, and am now a very avid Dark Angels fan.

As someone who really likes history, 40k scratches an itch that very few other franchises can pull off with even close to the same level of intensity. For most other franchises, it is clear that it was designed as a story first and foremost. Stories start, progress, and end. Real life doesn't work like that and neither does 40k. Just as the countless wars of our history can all be told as their own grand epics (everything from earliest wars in ancient Mesopotamia and Greco-Persian Wars to the late wars of World War 2, the Cold War, and the Ukraine-Russian War), life continues on even after those wars are concluded, no matter who won or lost. This principle applies to 40k. The Imperium of Man is older than all of recorded human civilization and they control 1+ million worlds. There are so many stories to tell, to the point that if we combined all of the fictional stories humans have ever told or written, there would still be far more in 40k.
40k also has the unique advantage of having over a dozen main factions as well as many other subfactions. Most stories have 2 or 3. 40k has way more. This allows for a ton of customization and a much higher likelihood of finding a faction that a new player would like. And, if all else fails, they can make their own subfaction up as well.
40k is both very expansive and extremely diverse. Which is why I always roll my eyes at the mention of a lack of diversity or representation. It's all there, you just aren't looking for it. And that's your fault, not the franchise's.

hey, i got into this great hobby all thanks to my old man aka. my dad who started WH40K when he was 14 (he's 49 now). i got introduced to it when i was 7 (i am 23 now). we went to a store where he was going to play Warhammer fantsy (Old World) but of course as a kid, 40K looked way more amazing and yeah, now i have a Dark Angels army together with my dad who i pulled back into it (in a funny way) and way we play against each other sometime or i go to a store or the local club in my city to play it. i'm also painting my Cadian army rn while texting this and even during watching your amazing video. and tbh, this hobby is just more than a hobby to me as it connect me with other people while i have autism so thanks to this hobby i meet other people and am i making friends even which is normally not easy for me so yeah... for me is it something unique if i have to say it this way in a possitive way.

I grew up as a big Star Wars fan and also loved the Stargate franchise but around 10+ years ago a buddy of mine, me and a lot of other were writing on an online RPG story. We mixed a bunch of scifi universes together and he also added assets from 40k. Later he pointed me to the (for many) infamous Ultramarines movie that I fell in love with. Since then I started to play Dawn of War and other W40k Games. Over the years I read dozens of 40k books and started around two years ago (with a lot of pause due to RL) with miniature painting :D Sure I wasn't invested fully in this time in the hobby, but I never truly lost track and unlike Star Wars the depth and fascinition for the settinng failed me. 40k claimed the ultimate spot for my love to scifi.

Hmm my first introduction was at a shop in the mall with my dad. I noticed the Elder Scrolls daggerfall box, and we both looked at it, and joked about it having been released as an updated version with over 1000+ bugs fixed or something. Just good old Bethesda keeping the tradition alive.
That is when I seen below it was Warhammer shadow of the horned rat. I noticed the box, and it was some dude fighting Orks, and it reminded me of a fantasy Total war shogun. So I showed my father, and he bought it. My uncle told us it was a board game like D&D, but with large battles. After that I got an undead army, and some pack with five space marines, and gobs, and was hooked from then on.

The only ever warhammer figurine I owned, was a Chaos Warrior Chariot in metal, from like 2000 or something. I did a piss poor paintjob, but was still just happy to have this bad ass little model on my shelf.
I remember playing Dawn of War back in 2004 and thought the whole scale of the game was insane. I started reading wiki pages about certain units, factions and special characters in the lore. Now nearly 20 years later, I'm still eager to learn, play and enjoy more warhammer, be it fantasy or 40k. The franchise is the biggest god damn rabbit hole Iv ever willingly jumped into, and by the emperor it is magnificent.

What got me into it? I started when I was pretty young with 2nd edition. I was drawn to the Tyranids because I loved xenomorphs. I played through college and fell out of it in 3rd edition.
I got drawn back in slightly in 8th with the big Sisters release. Got their army box but never really did anything with it. Got the 9th launch box but... didn't do much with it. Then Chaos Knights came out and I actually got back into building and painting fully and now I'm utterly drowning in kits I need to build and paint. Can't wait for 10th this Saturday. My old favorites are finally the star villains of an edition.
One thing of note about retcons... it's kind of neat in 40K because retcons are usually justified in universe by there simply being so much lost and/or inaccurate data about the past. In setting, it isn't that something magically changed, it's that more accurate records of events was uncovered.

I then met a now ex-friend who reintroduced it to me to it. I bought Dawn of War 1 and its DLCs on steam and played it a bit. I fell in love with the Tau (I still love and play them in DoW) and grew to despise the Necrons (my ex-friend's faction). Got a starter box with the start collecting paint sets you could buy, you know, the ones with the daemon on it painting a miniature model daemon. I built and painted a couple, then stopped. Got back into DoW, discovered the Mechanicus and fell in love. Went into the store to buy more Tau and discovered that Ad Mech had a faction and bought it. From that day onward Warhammer has been part of my life.

Man I can remember like yesterday going into my friends parents basement and his dad had the entire basement turned into two massive 8 by 4 gaming tables. Done to the works. Like something you’d see in a white dwarf magazine. Massive 90degree corner desk with lights, magnifying glasses, racks of paints and paint brushesHe displayed his armies on the gaming tables like a massive battle scene. One table had ultramarines vs black legion and the other was blood angels vs orks. Every single model was painted to absolute parade standard also like you’d see in a white dwarf. If we weren’t in Canada he easily could have been a professional painter at the time. I had no idea what I was looking at but my mind was absolutely blown While simultaneously being pulled into another dimension and I desperately wanted to be a part of it. The moment I laid eyes on them bright blue with golden trimmed space army men I had to know more I was immediately hooked his dad was even kind enough to give me one of his incredibly well painted ultramarines that I still have to this very day. I begged my parents to take me to a games workshop though I was in for a rude awakening when I did and seen the prices fully dependent on my parents. I use to dream of these things and would only get something on birthdays and Christmas. My mom bought me my very first box of 5 space marines we went to steadman’s and I got all my shitty bottles of acrylic paints and brushes totally ill prepared for the job and I got to work. They came out like shit but they were mine. My very own space marines and I’ve been absolutely hooked on 40k ever since. The story’s the tales the photos the boards the models it has enthralled me for basically my entire life I’m now a 35 year old man that still reads, listens, paints something to do with 40k every single day and will continue to do so for the rest of my life! We’re so lucky to have 40k!

If you ANALize the part with "any other setting show humanity to prospering" the thing is for those who don't know like us is to whe had that golden era gut always it was someone who couldn't keep his pants and hands where they belong when in most of the other settings humanity didn't realy succedet or it fucket it self for some strerotipic over used bitch reason like greed, wanted to play god, wanted some alienussy, couldn't be good enough for the job, etc. And in the worst chase scenario what very probably happend and are too many evidences to don't it happend and happen in owr present.

I started to get interested in this IP for simple reasons, I think the whole Nerd universe I knew and loved (and a lot of people will disagree with me, no problem guys) is dead.
The comics died, Marvel and DC, the superheroes today are unbearable in their live action version.
Video games, Gears of War is dead, Halo is dead
Star Wars and Star Trek, totally dead.

One thing that makes it special and apart from other scifi or even fantasy is that it is truly hopeless with no clear bright future if there even was one. It's a naked view of what the world could and really is in that the universe id a cruel pitiless thing and we are not special but specs of dust whose scale is utterly meaningless. It gives a perspective in game form that people lack today which makes the bravery of a simple Guardsman standing against a giant Nid he has no hope of living ten seconds against so compelling. It is the spirit of man locked in stoic struggle with the reality of existence. You don't really get these sorts of stories anywhere else nor with characters as human and flawed as the humans of 40k. They are not perfect heroes like Jedi or Spartan 2's but flawed beings which makes them much more relatable than some perfect boy scout. Frankly I think 40k is a much more realistic vision of mankind's future than star trek ever could be. People have forgotten the world is not a safe place with any number of things ready to hurt or kill you mixed with cold fact life is not fair and was never promised to be. To me this is what makes 40k so awesome as at it's core under all the cranked to 11 badassery it's more realistic in how pitiless life can be but we keep marching on.

It's not _that_ special. It's really just fantasy tropes transplanted into a science-fiction setting: Basically like Star Wars, except much darker, more pessimistic and somehow even sillier. If it stands out, it's because those two franchises are the only ones currently doing this type of thing, while managing to have distinctly different styles of appeal.
Like, I don't really care about the grimdark stuff. _In fact,_ I find it depressing and somewhat disturbing that so many people go along with the whole "fascist religious zealot" thing, even as a joke. I mostly got into WH40k via If The Emperor Had A Text To Speech Device, because at least those guys were laughing _at_ the misery. to be brutally honest, I'm more concerned withwhat I _wouldn't_ assimilate from this particular franchise, as I view it as more bad than good. But, end of that day, all I _really_ want is space knights stabbing alien monsters with swords. Just give me that and I'm happy.
