The time in America where a liberal and conservative could sit down and actually enjoy each other. Ah, I miss that.

I was ready to disagree with you, but you're kind of correct about that. We have gotten way too extremely partisan, these days.

As have the two gentlemen in this video, no?

    • @TimeCodeMechanics
      @TimeCodeMechanics 8 років тому +1

FoodLiquorCool I think these two could have this conversation today. Jon Stewart frequently debated Bill O'Reilly and still seems to be more even tempered than many liberals today in my opinion. I could say the same for Cobert.

Stewart yes, Colbert no. Colbert is very vindictive and is very divisive. Even conservatives can laugh at/with Stewart a bit.

You still can. But you can't put the "radical" versions of those two together and hope for dialog. Instead it's two people talking at each other with zero grou d of flexibility.

This was a great discussion between two bright, likable guys. No one is being nasty or mean spirited, just kicking around the football of religion. It's actually a relief to hear Miller, an unashamed conservative, not taking the side of religious fanatacism. I can be a conservative without having to believe in a talking snake.

Stewert does a great job getting his point across. I always loved his standup, a truly unique voice instead of the 6 gazillion carbon copy comics out there.

Jon Stewart is in a very lucrative position. He has a news program which can influence a large swath of the population but can always fall back on the comedy crutch if controversy pops up. There is a reason why Obama went on his show.

I like how they are polar opposites but still are friends. One is Jewish, the other Catholic, one's liberal and the other (now) conservative, but they are clearly friends. That is the real message out of all this.

Yes, just a comedian. He draws attention from actual news shows, because they either side with his point of view-and highlight him, find one of his satirical jokes humorous, or call him out on being wrong about the facts his "jokes" are based on. AND because a lot of young people, like for example in this forum, actually believe Stewart to be an actual journalist. ....I wonder if they also think George Clooney is an ER doctor? Or William Shatner a lawyer?

  • @KungfuCow5

They are both very bright people who now happen to be on opposite sides. The thing is a) you can't be that witty and have your brain work that fast without being bright; and b) it's okey that different people have different opinions. That happens when you don't live in North Korea. I did like them then and I like them both now.

For some reason? If we don't stick up for the absolutely defenseless, no one will. There will be no reason for any of us to feel safe. I understand all the arguments for "choice". I've probably come up with a few back in the day. But thought just for the sake of thought, without humility or reverence for life is dangerous.

He actually is a journalist but not in the traditional sense. I consider satire to be the 5th branch of government, that keeps tabs on journalism (the 4th branch). Through comedy you can always get people to realize something within society

    @ XXXoBradyoXXX - I agree with your Stewart-Miller-Maher assessments.
To the point, I believe that Maher is a "TRUE Intellectual"
(Definition: "True Intellectual" - A person educated far beyond their natural intelligence.)
To me, this explains Bill Maher perfectly.

Why are we hating on either of these people? They have different political views than you. They're both smart. They both considered EACH SIDE of a particular issue before drawing their conclusions (something 95% of the population has NEVER done). Perhaps most importantly, they discuss these views calmly, thoughtfully, and respectfully.
    Learn something.

I think 9/11 made him go moderately insane. I can remember excitedly tuning in to his show so I could get my weekly update on his progression into madness, which arguably made the show better despite the steep decline of actual funnies. Dennis Miller Live ran from 1994-2002.

@XXXoBradyoXXX The problem for me with Maher is that he said one thing under one administration and when that administration left and the policies didn't change, he did. He's acting like one election solves the problem. Maher and Dennis Miller agreed with each other in 2002 on most things, but I'm sure they'd never admit that now. Back then it was cool to be the independent libertarian. Now Maher is the hero for cozying up to the DNC and Dennis Miller is hammered by the media for being on Fox.

I do know that people who like these two very intelligent comedians are probably pretty intelligent themselves. And it's the intelligent people who have looked beyond the official governmental bullshit story. Idiots accept what is told to them even when the facts contradict the story. And some people are trusting and believe it also not wanting to be cynical. They just want to get along and get on with their lives. It's hard to defend freedom. It takes effort and guts and a big mouth.

Well if English is your second language, that's understandable, but I doubt that's true because foreigners who learn English usually understand syntax and grammar better than native speakers. I was at the University for 9 years, and I speak 2 languages. My research on 9/11 has been in depth for 2 and a half years. Do you want to debate points or put me down? Good Luck with both.

Yes, I'm for adult abortion. If a person can not respect the life of an unborn child, then they have no respect for life or they would have used protection. So, I agree that both contributors to the problem should be terminated. That means both the male who contributed the sperm and the female who contributed the egg.

Fine I'll qualify "most people". Most is the educated people throughout Europe, Canada. This is why America is so disrespected in those places. Most is also the people in America according to polls taken here 61% of Americans have at least an understanding that there was foreknowledge or forewarning that was ignored. Sorry if podunk Wal-Mart shoppers in your town haven't gottten the news. You should ask New Yorkers how they feel. They'll tell you between coughs if they can catch their breath.

@wick2107, My point is that lots of people have extremist views that commit violent acts. And those people are almost as bad as the bombers because they enable/support/legitimize the violant actors in their society. Where I take issue with Jon is that he seems to explain suide bombers as being people with personality defects (the same as people who tend to get obsessed with their hobbies, or diets, or work). But I think they are created by a culture infected with religious extremism.
