Indeed, I particularly enjoyed the choice to have the girl wear high heeled boots to explore a snow covered mountain. It's his dedication to logic and realism that sets this movie apart.
I read a Plummer interview some time ago, and he stated that he didn't mind doing Starcrash. "I got a free trip to Italy". It's a fun movie. Sure, it's low budget, but wow, dig that lite-brite outer space! That was created by taking black crepe paper and punching holes in it and have the colored lights hovering over it! Say what you want about the effects, but, that's dedication folks. Spinell is great as the hammy "Count Zarth Arn" and what more can be said about Caroline Munro, but ooo-la-la. It amazing to see how Star Wars, Ep. 4 was released in 1977 and continues to attract new generations of fans. It was a 'game changer' for the Sci-fi genre.
Indeed, Star Wars had great vision. In terms of aesthetics and world building everything felt right and consistent. A lot of things in Star Wars became iconic like for example its wipe fade transition, what other movie can pull it off better than Star Wars now? It basically became a part of the brand that we can easily recognise. The only downside was the directing/writing imo, it's a shame because Star Wars has a vast source of collection from the legends of the Old Republic to other different eras, lots of interesting characters that could have made it to the big screen. Star Wars combines the best of both world, realism and sci-fi imo. It's really immersive and makes me feel like intergalactic space travel exploration may be possible in the far future.
Considering how many times I came up with my own version (headcanon, rewrites) after I watched a bad movie or show (Jurassic World, Star Wars sequels, Fantastic Beasts, Game of Thones S8, some Marvel), I can totally imagine that Lucas read the script of this movie and thought he could do a better one. 😆

@@Michael45007 Star Wars 4 is actually a New Hope that came out in the 70s as the first film. The Phantom Menace was the fourth movie to come out but was the first episode of the Saga. I don't think you've ever watched or seen the making of the Star Wars films, the original 3, and I don't think you've ever seen an interview or biography of Lucas. He had control of making the first 3 films! He fought against Hollywood and the status quo! He wasn't just producing it, he originally started to direct it as well, but when there was just too much to do, he hired a director that would follow his visions! Lucas kept all of the scripts under lock and key. Even the cast didn't know most the lines until right before they were doing that scene! So don't sit there and say he wasn't given creative control until Phantom Menace. He invented Start Wars, he and his crew invented THX and Pixar! Please learn your history first!
Check out "Black Hole" (1979) that was a Disney Production. It starred Anthony Perkins of Norman Bates fame. It's special effects rivaled Star Wars and it's story was better than all the Star Wars movie other than Original Trilogy. It is an all time underrated movie.
I remember reading in Space magazine about how the fx artists for Star Crash used the sprues from the model kits as well as the parts to decorate their spaceships. You can see it on the opening shot. I remember buying a ticket to see this movie just to be inspired by how cheaply a movie can be made. LOL
It's called Kitbashing and they did it in star wars too if you've watched the bts documentaries. Actually I think most people did it since it's such an easy thing to do.
@@isthatbraised Absolutely. And I think you might agree that in Star Wars it was done much more sparingly and tastefully. For example, I think if you look at the bottom corner of the head of the cannon tower from the Death Star trench, you might see a kit sprue there among the model parts. Model parts themselves were used much more extensively, but always done thoughtfully and with a sense of purpose. Yes, I know about kitbashing. I read a lot of articles on model making and effects and built a few spaceships of my own for a short film that I was working on... another blatant Star Wars rip-off.
Stormtrooper: can’t shoot something directly in front of them This movie: shoots so accurately that time slows down and everything explodes Definitely not Star Wars

My family and I watched the MST3K version (the best thing to have ever happened to this film) and I swear, the torpedo soldiers nearly broke us. We were flabbergasted by what we were seeing. We had no coherent words.
Actually, the screenwriter of Star Crash was told to read the novelization of Star Wars because the film wasn't released in Italy yet. So everything's off kilter because the writer had no physical frame of reference for what he was reading and what he was reading was translated from English into Italian!! Imagine reading R2D2, the force, light speed, Jedi, light saber and Wookie for the first time and being described these things on paper from a different language no less?!?! I mean, he saw there was a Princess Leia and assumed her father was a King!! He figured The Force was some kind of magic! And just look at his robots compared to R2 & 3PO? He really had no idea what he was reading or writing about. They saw the crawl written out on the first page but had no idea which direction it "crawled" on screen because he never saw one before!! Even the stuff Lucas drew inspiration from were foreign to him. So, this is why everything is the way it is in Star Crash. An Italian filmmaker wanted to make a cheap knock off of a revolutionary sci-fi, American box office smash that he didn't see, only read about.
Its a Spaghetti space film, minus the good actors, good director, and good writing. I did hear though that the pop corn was good. They use real butter in Italy.
I remember hearing that -- there was a Chinese similar one as well -- except that it was a comic book based on... someone's description? Something like that.
Starcrash was not something an italian filmmaker wanted to make. It was something producers and the film company wanted the filmmaker to make. Tje filmmaker wanted to make a serious "hard" sci fi movie, but nobody had any interest in financing it. Also, such new US genres killed the commercial movie industry as the italians could not really afford to make them. They did well with western and crime movies but sci fi and fantasy was really out of their range. The filmmakers would have preferred continuing to do western and crime movies, so making Rambo knockoffs and space opera was something they never really wanted to do.

Robert Tessier as “Thor”” (the real creepy looking bald guy). The actual volcano used as a location for the “third launch”. You can see why now, that Star Wars was such a success. It was just miles above any other sci if movie.

This is a perfect illustration of how far ahead of the times star wars was in terms of visual effects. Not just special effects. But costumes and crap. My god. Star Wars wasn't really so ground-breaking VISUALLY. 2001 A Space Odyssey came nearly an entire decade before Star Wars, .. . THAT was the movie that pioneered THOSE KIND of visuals

@@isthatbraised 👍 Adam Savage does a pretty big deep dive into Kitbashing on his YT channel. The Death Star and Falcon are heavily Kitbashed!
@@dwmueller76 They also touched upon it briefly in his guest appearance in Corridor crew

That makes a lot of sence!

Why do so many people think he’s serious that Starwars is a copy of this movie
Not even close to it.
Only if they didn't watch after the first minute or two. Still, the cynicism came through pretty early.
Because they didn't watch the whole video.
Yeah, I mean this guy is oozing sarcasm
I love how your only commentary on the wardrobe for Stella is, "Then she changes out of her perfectly dry clothes into something more appropriate for space travel." I laughed again just typing it out. So glad I found this channel.
same
the makers obviously ripped off Barbarella, too. ANd the amazons on horseback reminded me of Planet of the Apes.
Back in the day when the Male Gaze really meant something... NORMALITY.👍
That actress Caroline Munro played in the Un-Official Bond movie Casino Royale then a few years later became a genuine Bond Girl in "The Spy Who Loved Me".
@@Wallyworld30 and Ursula Andress is the only actrss to play both a Bond Girl AND James Bond 007
Before being too harsh on 'Starcrash' for its shameless pilfering of 'Star Wars', we should remember that 'Star Wars' itself is heavily indebted in its scenario to Akira Kurosawa's superior 1958 period adventure 'The Hidden Fortress'.
Star Wars pilfered from multiple sources, samurai movies, westerns, King Arthur, Kirby's New Gods, Kikaider, etc.
Nothing is created in a bubble.
Hey dude just wanted to say I’ve been watching you since middle school (Batman and robin, wicker man and twilight reviews are still my faves) and I’m a sophomore in college now. Thanks for all the entertainment all these years!
This looks like a movie I need to watch when I’m high
Same bruh
You beat me to the comment,,,high to watch this
Caroline Munro 😏
My first thought when i saw the thumbnail
I assumed that this movie had an incredibly low budget, but the budget was 4 million which was decent for that time lol. Star Wars had an 11 million dollar budget, to put that into perspective lol.
Christopher Plummer stole this film. He only did a couple of days of filming, yet he is great in every section he is in.
He played it straight as well, hell he probably enjoyed it more than the Sound of Music!
@@shugaroony He said he did this film because he loved the idea of being able to spend a few years in Rome.
The guy is a consummate professional - read up on how he saved the film "All the Money in the World" in just a few days.
@@anonb4632 He was phenomenal in that film considering he was brought in last minute and only had a few days on set. True pro.
@@DaveMcGarry Isn't it great? I showed it to a friend of mine who usually watches rubbish like Batman vs Superman and Transformers films, and he was blown away by it. He couldn't believe it.
@@anonb4632 yeah a good movie for sure... Suspenseful, great acting and looks fantastic as usual from Ridley Scott. I don't really care for any superhero films, except the Nolan Batmans.
The actor with the curly blonde hair was a evangelist preacher when he was a young boy. He also played a perverted national guard soldier in the 1970s movie earthquake.
This is the future, where women dress appropriately for their body type.
Real women or just someone that says they're a woman
One had ‘The Hoff’, the other doesn’t. I know with one is superior.
Starcrash is a masterpiece we need a starcrash sequel
@@casper6405 directed by tommy wiseau, starring nicholas cage, and produced by niel breen. the universe would probably explode out of sheer awesomeness
Casper Disney should be making Starcrash episode 9 Rise of Hasselhoff instead.
piperian396 The Phantom Hoff, The Attack of The Hoffs, The Revenge of The Hoff, A New Hoff, The Hoff Strikes Back, The Return of The Hoff, The Hoff Awakens, The Last Hoff, The Rise of Hoff. Not forgetting Hoff and Hoff One. And The Hoff Wars and Hoff Wars The Hoffmass Special.
@@leecroft1983 did you just google "list of star wars movies"?
Star Wars was totally different for one it had a solid story line and well written, also great effects not grownups playing with toys in front of a camera as that is what it looked like
“Totally different “ haha, not really. “Totally different” in the same way that James Bond is different to The Bourne Identity, maybe.
Well written? He had to fix the story a few times, rogue one is just an example
Concerning this big "rip off" allegation. Why don't we be FAIR about this and cite some of the things that beloved big-britched high and mighty Star Wars did some pinching of it's OWN from, aye? Like namely from The Hidden Fortress, Dune, Arthurian mythology, and Vaughn Bode's Cobalt 60?
@@Josedinho_- forget rough one I’m talking about the original true Star Wars not Woke Wars
It had a good storyline, the new Star Wars 🤣🤦♂️, completely messed up, what happens when far lefties take charge
This was my first WMWM video, and now I can't get enough of this channel. I saw the title and was like what the hell? Then quickly saw what he was doing! Hahaha. Love the channel!!!
6:00 “Planning an escape, this what you’re gonna get, lady!” This scene makes me laugh out loud, every time, without fail. Something about that doofus and the way he starts hitting her with that stick is just comedy gold to me.
Funny, about 10min ago I finished watching Brandon Tenold's review of Star Crash. Awesome flick, especially the Hoff sporting a perm and wielding a light sabre.
She is a looker!
@strontiumXnitrate Correct, that is very different. My mistake.
It's interesting to see what Star Wars could have looked like with _ just_ a little less money and effort. I mean, this is probably what most of the studios who turned him down were picturing in their mind's eye.
Absolutely.
I was 12 when the original Star Wars came out and I loved it so much I saw it four times, in the theaters. To this day, that is three more times than I have seen any other movie in the theaters. Four times was few in my peer group. So, even though Star Crash looked like crap, we saw it immediately. And it was total crap. We were twelve year olds, and willingly wasted our money seeing obvious crap. To cash in, lots of crappy sci-fi series appeared on TV, and we watched those too.
the asylum version of star wars lol
Guy Chamberland - I certainly felt like I was going crazy
Strangely this film has some stuff going for it. At least three well known actors who are fun to watch, a robot who is less annoying than C3 PO and none of that pseudo-spiritual BS that Star Wars does. Plus its soundtrack is lush. I thought it was really fun even if parts do look cheap.
The Asylum wishes it had the vision to conceive of something like Starcrash. 💫
Anon B your opinion is irrelevant and c3po is a iconic robot
@@Brianbravo2000 My opinion is as relevant as yours. 👍
Star Wars Episode 4 - 1977
Star Crash - 1979
Thats everything u guys need to know
Correction star crash 1978
@@420murdaface idk bout that cuz star crash said 1979 but Still Star Wars Was First before star crash
XLGamer no well yeah it still was made before I just googled it right now
If Star Wars is a rip off of Star Crash, it’s a good rip off I’d say.
If it's a rip off it's a good ripoff stolen by a telepath while someone drunkenly woke up and started writing a first draft of a script for star crash
5:02 This shot makes the ladies costume look like an old school tv new show camera with the wires still connected to to..gotta love the 70 & 80s movie costumes all classic!!!!!
