It's actually a good point. A lot people, even the cast and crew, thought Star Wars would be this ridiculous looking movie with corny dialogue and be forgotten in a month. I mean, if you watch some of the behind-the-scenes footage where the special fx and sounds are not added it really does look like a cheap sci-fi flick.

1978: I remember seeing Starcrash in the theater when it was released. Without Caroline Munro, doing her space job in a bikini - and black Go-Go boots - no one would remember this film. We also have an Emperor who has the power to "halt the flow of time." That's a nice trick, assuming, once halted, there's a way to start things up again. Lucas tapped into a gold mine, and judging by the number of Star Wars ripoff films, and TV shows, we can tell exactly how big the original gold strike was. I remember thinking, on the way out of the theater, "Yeah, that was really awful, and I paid actual money to see it!" But decades later, I still remember this movie, because of the indelible impression made by Caroline Munro on my 19 year-old male brain.

I think a better look than Jane Fonda in Barbarella or Dorothy Stratten in Galaxina. But of course, these are matters of taste - and a ridiculous topic to argue about. And as for being strange - we all know people are strange. Jim Morrison told us that in the 1960s.

I read a Plummer interview some time ago, and he stated that he didn't mind doing Starcrash. "I got a free trip to Italy". It's a fun movie. Sure, it's low budget, but wow, dig that lite-brite outer space! That was created by taking black crepe paper and punching holes in it and have the colored lights hovering over it! Say what you want about the effects, but, that's dedication folks. Spinell is great as the hammy "Count Zarth Arn" and what more can be said about Caroline Munro, but ooo-la-la. Still, too bad she couldn't do her lines for the voice recording, although I do like Candy Clark.

@@Michael45007 Star Wars 4 is actually a New Hope that came out in the 70s as the first film. The Phantom Menace was the fourth movie to come out but was the first episode of the Saga. I don't think you've ever watched or seen the making of the Star Wars films, the original 3, and I don't think you've ever seen an interview or biography of Lucas. He had control of making the first 3 films! He fought against Hollywood and the status quo! He wasn't just producing it, he originally started to direct it as well, but when there was just too much to do, he hired a director that would follow his visions! Lucas kept all of the scripts under lock and key. Even the cast didn't know most the lines until right before they were doing that scene! So don't sit there and say he wasn't given creative control until Phantom Menace. He invented Start Wars, he and his crew invented THX and Pixar! Please learn your history first!

Indeed, Star Wars had great vision. In terms of aesthetics and world building everything felt right and consistent. A lot of things in Star Wars became iconic like for example its wipe fade transition, what other movie can pull it off better than Star Wars now? It basically became a part of the brand that we can easily recognise.
The only downside was the directing/writing imo, it's a shame because Star Wars has a vast source of collection from the legends of the Old Republic to other different eras, lots of interesting characters that could have made it to the big screen.
Star Wars combines the best of both world, realism and sci-fi imo. It's really immersive and makes me feel like intergalactic space travel exploration may be possible in the far future.

For example, I think if you look at the bottom corner of the head of the cannon tower from the Death Star trench, you might see a kit sprue there among the model parts. Model parts themselves were used much more extensively, but always done thoughtfully and with a sense of purpose. Yes, I know about kitbashing. I read a lot of articles on model making and effects and built a few spaceships of my own for a short film that I was working on... another blatant Star Wars rip-off.

Actually, the screenwriter of Star Crash was told to read the novelization of Star Wars because the film wasn't released in Italy yet. So everything's off kilter because the writer had no physical frame of reference for what he was reading and what he was reading was translated from English into Italian!! Imagine reading R2D2, the force, light speed, Jedi, light saber and Wookie for the first time and being described these things on paper from a different language no less?!?! I mean, he saw there was a Princess Leia and assumed her father was a King!! He figured The Force was some kind of magic! And just look at his robots compared to R2 & 3PO? He really had no idea what he was reading or writing about. They saw the crawl written out on the first page but had no idea which direction it "crawled" on screen because he never saw one before!! Even the stuff Lucas drew inspiration from were foreign to him. So, this is why everything is the way it is in Star Crash. An Italian filmmaker wanted to make a cheap knock off of a revolutionary sci-fi, American box office smash that he didn't see, only read about.

Starcrash was not something an italian filmmaker wanted to make. It was something producers and the film company wanted the filmmaker to make. Tje filmmaker wanted to make a serious "hard" sci fi movie, but nobody had any interest in financing it. Also, such new US genres killed the commercial movie industry as the italians could not really afford to make them. They did well with western and crime movies but sci fi and fantasy was really out of their range. The filmmakers would have preferred continuing to do western and crime movies, so making Rambo knockoffs and space opera was something they never really wanted to do.

The weird and original DESIGNS of some of the space crafts, especially the CLAW-shaped ship of the villains.
    The multi-colored stars.
The ice planet (which, interestingly, even prefigures “Hoth” in Empire Strikes Back).
The monster mask that fires lasers out of its eyes.
The touching friendship between the robot character “El” and Stella (particularly in the scene where he suspends her temperature to save her life).
Marjo Gortner as “Acton”. Sure, he overacts grossly, but he does bring a ridiculously quirky charm to the character, and I always thought he had a really cool looking FACE too.
Robert Tessier as “Thor”” (the real creepy looking bald guy).
The actual volcano used as a location for the “third launch”.
The very comely and scantily clad Ms. Munro and Nadia Cassini (the “Amazon Queen”), both of whom contribute an aesthetic of feminine beauty.

Strangely this film has some stuff going for it. At least three well known actors who are fun to watch, a robot who is less annoying than C3 PO and none of that pseudo-spiritual BS that Star Wars does. Plus its soundtrack is lush. I thought it was really fun even if parts do look cheap.

The Asylum wishes it had the vision to conceive of something like Starcrash. 💫

If Star Wars is a rip off of Star Crash, it’s a good rip off I’d say.

If it's a rip off it's a good ripoff stolen by a telepath while someone drunkenly woke up and started writing a first draft of a script for star crash

This is the movie Kathleen Kennedy watched when she was telling George Lucas that she knew all about StarWars and could lead the new movies...if only he had known.

Remember in The Last Jedi when Rose’s sister was in an open bomb drop bay with no suit just breathing the cool space air? Rian Johnson must have loved that human missile scene through the windows in Star Crash.

air and gravity exist in star wars space. have you not seen an x wing? or their loading docks? also I think fire exists in space too. have you ever seen lasers that have a colored beam? nope. don't you just love fiction?
