This is a jealous thing, just because they are from California. I watched a electric car company couldn’t get an approval for a vacant GM plant which was going to bring thousands of well needed jobs for local Shreveport people be held up to this day because of these city comities holding up progress.. I was born in Las Vegas, and grew up in a rural area in the Mojave Desert (California side). So to hear so many of you say "entitled Californians" is pretty ignorant. Most of us Californians are nothing like that botox infused weird lady haha. But I too agree that people need to leave wildlife alone. We've already caused enough damage. With that being said, I own 160 acres in Elko that is connected to 1200 acres of BLM land. And if I ever saw someone abusing wildlife they would surely be taught by me to never do so again.
There is a lack of willing to understand in today's world. You having lived the life have a lot to contribute. From an outsider and free enterprise inclined person I can't see what this lady tried to do that was so wrong. I have 10 acres in Montello, Elko County...my first weeks out here a rancher stopped me and said, "Build a fence. We range cattle out here and they will tear down anything they lean against." Good advice. So I built a 140'x140' fence and the cattle from Oct to May due range out here and come up to my fence...and I welcome them since their patties are my garden fertilizer. Just can't see what this lady was trying to do that was so wrong...maybe an explanation would clear the fog...but until then this seems like an abuse of power.
Way to go Elko County! I live in Utah and the in flux of people moving here from California is devastating. They show up and ruin everything, the housing market, the traffic, culture, local laws, and have a terrible attitude for the most part. The area I grew up in use to be very tight knit, everyone knew each other and no one was pressed financially. But over the last 20 years, that canyon has slowly been taken over by rich Californians who want a vacation home and a place to put their money. They also build big fences and make it private property. Making hunting and hiking impossible in most areas of the canyon, no one I grew up with lives there anymore! So what was once a nice, quiet, and open canyon to everyone is now a private, gated off community of people WHO ARE NEVER THERE! And the people born and raised in the area? Paying too much for apartment living or are forced to move out of state to somewhere cheaper.
So you're mad that people spend their own money to buy property and then won't let just anyone on it? Why are you or anyone else entitled to hunt or hike on property that is owned by someone else? And why exactly would you care how often they are there? I was born and raised in Montana and have lived in Texas for the past 25 years, people complain about the same things in both of those states and it is very confusing to me.
It is interesting, in the 1920's, 30's, 40's people flocked to California...then they settled duriung the 50's....then the 60'd onward started a rebound...up to Portland, Seattle and even Alaska...out to Vegas, Reno, Pheonix and reaching SLC. I can remember how peaceful downtown SLC was in 1980...by 1983 there were bum hecklers....by 1987 due to the influx of drugs and people from out of town...you could tell where the trend was going.
This woman made the wrong choice picking Elko County. Had she gone one county west to Eureka County she could have done anything with her land. No permits required. And still be within driving distance to Elko.
Well, sort of. The history of wild horses in Eureka is kind of a mixed bag, whichever side you're on, and there have been some disturbing incidents with the BLM. Of course, that's all a while back, at this point, so it's hard to say. Eureka isn't quite the lawless free-for-all people like to say it is. I love it, but what the situation really is, is that you have to explain yourself to your neighbors, more than your government. That's not usually _hard_, but you do have to make the effort.
I think the horses are okay, they should be managed like other wild animals are (with hunting and seasons). I kinda get why a small ranching community wasn't up for accommodating a bunch of California elites though.

The wild horses of today were brought here several hundred years ago and ended up loose and breeding. The original species of horses that evolved in North America are not the same species as these horses. The original species went EXTINCT TWO MILLION years ago. Look it up. Today's horses do not belong in Nevada and should be removed.

The wild horses are extremely over populated and are ruining the eco system. The are eating all of the sage brush and it takes a long time to grow so they are not only starving the rest of the animals and destroying thier habitat, but they are also starving themselves. But these horses are bigger than thier ancestors and Nevada is a lot dryer now and the climate and vegetation is different than it was before. Also they have no real predators.
She is nice and beautiful and has a great idea, but what I have seen in a lot of places, including Wisconsin where I live, is that people with a lot of money move in, build big houses that no one in the area could afford, property values go up, taxes go up, the original people that were living there can't afford to live there any longer, the only jobs available are service jobs that pay minimum wage, workers sleeping in cars to get by, and I think that is terrible. It is great that people are rich and like making money and playing too, but not everyone is there, and they also need to live. There is a woman near where I live that bought acres and acres of land, fenced it all in, and ever since I was a kid, we went swimming and fishing for free on that land, until it was closed off. She has done good things for the community, but also backed government with her money that wanted to bust unions. People could say the government is abusing their power, but maybe they are protecting those people that live there!
