  • Join me for the Minelab GPX 5000 unboxing. I show you 3 configurations and a few mods I've came up with already. You will get to watch me dig my 1st relic, a Civil War bullet, I found with the GPX 5000.
    I would like to thank Facebook friends; Tommy Henriquez and Randy Schuh for sharing with me a lot of their knowledge about the GPX 5000; they helped me make a buying decision. A big thanks to Marc Sciance for his UA-cam videos on the GPX 4500. I think I watched all of them; especially the one on his settings. Thanks also to Keith Leppert of Fort Bedford Metal Detectors for the great deal on the GPX 5000 and for sharing his setting. Special thanks to Tommy Henriquez for sharing his settings for the GPX 5000. All these guys really helped me shorten the learning curve.
    Watch some of my GPX 5000 adventures here: • Minelab GPX 5000
    While I've been temporarily out of commission due to eye surgery, I've made a few changes. I sold my Minelab CTX 3030 and Garrett ATX and purchased a Minelab GPX 5000 pulse metal detector.
    I have had my eye on one of these for many years and have spent a lot of time researching and figured it was time. As usual, I have put in a lot of time into learning this detector even though I had never even seen one until now.
    I'm not really counting on the GPX 5000 making all the sites I detect like virgin sites again, but I'm sure it will help on some of them. Hopefully now I'll be able to plan some trips to Northern Virginia now that I have the tools for that difficult ground.
    I hope to get very serious with my relic hunting as soon as I'm able to get back out. Hopefully I can do a lot of comparisons with all my detectors as well. I'm getting closer to getting a section of my yard cleaned out so I can make a good test garden. It's been a 20 year task due to the heavily iron saturated ground. I plan on having 100 targets ranging from bullets, buttons, coins, iron, etc.
    So, stayed tuned for my future videos.
    I would like to thank all of you who watch my videos and I'd like to encourage you to subscribe to my UA-cam channel, ua-cam.com/users/SavingLocalHist..., if you haven't done so already. It's free and it helps me to stay motivated to keep making videos.
    I hope you enjoy the video and that you will share it with others.

    It was Christmas at Mr. Larry's house. I admire you for not just laying down and giving up. Your doing what you love and I hope that you stay at it.

      I guess it was an early Christmas. It took some time to come up with the money but I think it was a wise investment. I have had a lot of things happen that would probably end the detecting hobby for many.
      The hardest thing I've had to deal with was sudden hearing loss in my right ear. I had started metal detecting in the Fall of 1999 and only hunted for coins the first year. I accidentally found a Civil War bullet at an old house place and changed my focus. My buddy and I made some amazing finds on some sites we had found. Then, on April 12, 2005 at almost exactly 1 PM I suffered sudden hearing loss in my right ear. On top of that, I ended up with the worse case of tinnitus the doctors had ever experienced. I have such a loud noise in that ear to this day.
      I ended up practically giving up detecting after that. I tried all different types of headphones and gimmicks but I just couldn't hear the deep signals anymore. So, for about 9 years I detected very little. Then in 2014 I just decided I was going to adjust and figure away to do it again. I lost a lot of valuable time in those 9 years and no telling how many relics I ended up missing. Also, in that period of time my detecting buddy, who was my current age at the time, he had to almost give up as well as I usually did the research and drove to the sites. In those 9 years, his health went down as well and he can no longer detect. The hearing loss messed up both us as far as metal detecting went.
      So when I started having problem with my knees and eyesight, etc. It worried me because I'm at the age now where anything could happen to end my love of this wonder hobby. I hope to at least have a few more good years to detect. After that, I can always watch my videos and remember the good times.
      Thanks so much for watching.

    I never got the screamer pack working on the 5000 or the new wireless sound. I use a small speaker. I dont like using head phones in Alaska grizzly country. I love the gpx 5000 it will run so quiet in highly mineralized ground. And i can tell when a small bush plane fly's over too. I also found the mine lab pin pointer can be used like area detector with the gpx5000 on certain channels i can hear the pointer signal in head phones when pointed at large steal objects 10 to 20 feet away even when the pin pointer is not making sounds. it helped me find old gold camp sights.

      I'm curious as to why the screamer pack wouldn't work. You need to get in touch with Doc at www.docsdetecting.com. What are you calling the new wireless sound? I use the external speaker I got from Doc almost all the time; it works great. Interesting about being able to pick up the bush planes. Sounds like you've come up with some interesting uses for the equipment. Thanks for watching and good luck to you.

      I have really reorganized my tools lately. When I get my test gardened completed, I'm going to do a thorough analysis on them and try to make some worthwhile videos that will help myself and others learn how to use them efficiently. Thanks again for watching George.

      It's been a dream of mine for a long time. I had to part with a couple of my other detectors to be able to afford it, but I think the tradeoff will we worthwhile. I hope you too can get one as well. Thanks for watching.

    I use a vintage Bluegrass irrigation spade. Best metal detecting shovel in the world!

    • @SavingLocalHistory
      @SavingLocalHistory  2 роки тому +1

      I'm glad you was lucky enough to find a favorite shovel. I have many different ones that I use in different situations. The one in this video didn't impress me on the first site I took it to. There were too many roots and the ground was very hard and rocky. I ended up using my Piranha Shovel made by Predator Tools. It really cuts the roots very well. I'll have to be on the lookout for one of the vintage Bluegrass Irrigation Spades. Thanks for your advice and thanks for watching.

      I think I'm really going to like the GPX 5000. The hardest decision I have to make now is deciding which detector to use and when. My eye is really improving and the bubble is much smaller. Unless something else happens, I plan to be out detecting soon. Thanks for watching.

    That's wonderful Larry.
    My wife and I have 4500's.
    You will have a blast going back to burned out spots that are not to trashy.
    It's all about patience and slowing down.
    May I suggest this? Move the control box as far to the rear as it will go and then adjust the handle so the arm strap will be near your elbow fold. It's all about balance and you will be able to hunt longer when you get the weight off the coil end.
    Good luck and I'm really looking forward to your next vid.
    Clint

      I plan on hitting a lot of my past hunted-out spots but I've been over them all pretty good with a lot of detectors including a couple of pulse detectors. I'm not expecting a lot that I've missed, but I hope I'm wrong. I like the idea of moving the control box back to help balance the load; I'll have to look into doing that. I'll probably use the Pro Swing 45 harness when I'm using the 15" coil; it works so well. I could detect with the Garrett ATX or CTX 3030 all day while using the harness without any noticeable fatigue in my arms. I can't wait to be able to get out and detect again. Thanks so much for your comments and for watching. Good luck to you and your wife.

      @@SavingLocalHistory Thanks Larry.
      Put that Detect coil on for those tough spots. The 11 incher just can't get the depth that the big Detect can.

    Just got my GPX the other day . Some have said to me it will change your life, lol. Love to see some of the settings you use out there on mineralized land. I am in the throws of my learning curve but hope to keep learning

    • @SavingLocalHistory

      I believe they are correct because you will definitely be doing a lot more digging. I basically just run the factory presets for the Deep configuration. I have to adjust it some for my hearing loss though. But I do run Iron Reject at 7 most of the time. Good luck with you GPX and thanks for watching.

      I hope you like the Tarsacci. The reason I bought a GPX is to do some serious testing to see if the Tarsacci out performs some of the other detectors in hot ground. I hope to find out soon. Good luck and thanks for watching.

      @@SavingLocalHistory thanks Larry I love your videos! The Tarsacci is my 49 Metal Detector lol.

    • @SavingLocalHistory
      @SavingLocalHistory  2 роки тому +1

      @@craigtalley Oh my! 49 detectors has to be a record. I bet you could easily sell a few of them and get a GPX; that's what I did.
      I finally came to the realization that I can't possible learn all the setting and tricks of too many detectors and remember them. So I have started culling trying to get down to a few that will cover all the bases of the type detecting that I do. I just wish I had held on to some of them long enough to have made a few videos with them.
      I have a lot of plans as far as my videos go. I still have a lot to learn as I've had to learn so many different things in the process plus get the nerve to talk to myself while detecting. I hope to start doing a lot of how-to type videos after I spend a little more time learning Davici Resolve. My relic and coin finds have really suffered due to me having to use a lot of my time making the videos but I'm getting better at it. Teaching is not one of my strong points, but I have learned so much about so many different things that I have to figure a way to share them before I bite the bullet.
      I bet you have an unbelievable collection that you have put together using your vast arsenal of detectors. I'd love to see some of what you have found.
      Anyway, thanks again for the compliments and for watching.

    Olles I have a question to tell you I have a minelab gpx 4500 and with its battery and headphones I already configured it but it doesn't make any noise because either I also need the sound amplifier to be heard or it's because I'm new to this I hope you can help me

    • @SavingLocalHistory
      @SavingLocalHistory  Рік тому +1

      Jose, I'm not sure what could be the problem with your 4500. Did you buy it new or used? You may want to check with who you bought it from to see if they know the problem or solution. Here's some thoughts I have about it. The stock battery has an amplifier built in. If it's not working, this could be the problem. Have you tried a different set of headphones (maybe the ones you are using has a broken wire in them. You may also want to make sure that in your settings don't have the volume turned down as well. If I think of anything else, I'll let you know. Good luck figuring it out. Thanks again for watching.
