  • Sorry for the long video, but I use these videos myself to document what I find and to help me learn about my detectors. Sometimes even after I edit them, they still turn out long. It may be worth watching all of it; especially if you're learning the GPX 5000 detector as I am.
Join me for one of the best days of relic hunting I've had in a long time. I was swinging the Minelab GPX 5000 with the Detech 15" Spiral Wound Coil; a great combination.
I had to change my plans mid stream as the first place I intended to detect was too grown up. Another long drive put me on another spot that I hadn't detected for years. This turned out to be the first of four great days in a row on this site with hopefully more to come.
I would like to thank all of you who watch my videos and I'd like to encourage you to subscribe to my UA-cam channel if you haven't done so already. It's free and it helps me to stay motivated to keep making the videos.
I hope you enjoy the video and that you will share it with others.

I think yours is the best GPX 5K instructions on the web hands down, letting us hear the machine before you dig is such a good teacher, thank you for your time to take us along on your dig!

Thanks so much. I try hard to help people learn but I've still got a lot to learn myself. I believe that if you make a metal detecting video, it should include the metal detector being used. Thanks again for such a nice comment and for watching.

Man, really enjoying you learn this machine, and it's helping me learn mine. I'm going out tomorrow to hit a small site I pounded with my Equinox. Lots of iron, but I'm hoping I can hear some deeper relics between the iron. Keep it ip!

I'm glad it's helping you learn as well. I detected this same site with the Garrett GTI 2500, Minelab XS, Minlab Explorer II, Minelab Etrac, Fisher F75, White's 6000 XL Pro, Minelab CTX 3030, Garrett AT Pro, Garrett AT Max, XP Deus, Minelab Equinox 800, Tarsacci, etc. I found some relics with all of them but there is no way I just missed this many bullets (be sure to watch the next 4 or 5 videos) thus far that I have found with the GPX 5000. The ground is very mineralized which tells me that none of the VLF detectors have been hitting well on these bullets even though a lot of them were only 7" deep. Maybe I just missed all of them; who know. Anyway, I've had a ball detecting this site again. Thanks for watching and good luck. Let me know how you did.

Thanks Jimmy; I love to dig bullets. To me they were definitely part of the conflict whether dropped or fired. I'm trying to find 550 more bullets to fill up some dead space in my display cases. I think I'm up to 242 thus far so it will be a while. Thanks again for watching.

Really enjoyed this close up of the GPX. I really love my Nox 600 but I know I am missing targets and its chatty in these highly mineralized fields in WV. I got a friend who uses the GPX and is finding all kinds of stuff that I have not. I love the hobby and I think the investment is probably worth it from what I see and read here. Thanks for the video

Thanks for the great comments. I've owned a lot of high-end detectors and have spent a lot of time learning all of them. I have also tried many of the small and large coils on a lot of Civil War sites. I'm no where near what you would call an expert, but I have learned a lot over the years.
Here's some of the detectors I've owned in the order that I bought them: Garrett GTI 2500, Minelab XS, White's 6000 XL Pro, Minelab Explorer II, Minelab E-Trac, White's TDI, Fisher F75 LTD, White's V3i, Minelab CTX 3030, Garrett ATX, XP Deus, Garrett AT Pro, Garrett AT Max, Minelab Equinox 800, Nokta Makro Simplex, Tarsacci MDT 8000, GPX 5000. I have found a lot of relics and coins and spent a lot of time swinging them.
I have found that the VLF detectors have their place; especially in being able to do Identification a little better. They typically do not do very well in mineralized ground though. Then Minelab came along with the FBS (Full Band Spectrum) and opened a new door to me. They seem to beat the VLF machines on target ID in almost all situations. I began finding relics, especially on iron infested sites, that completely surprised me. They seem to do better in mineralized ground, but you had to really slow down to hear the deeper targets. The CTX 3030 took it a step further with the FBS2 technology and the amazing screen. I really loved this detector but it was a little heavy to use all day. When the lighter detectors started hitting the playing field (XP Deus, Equinox 800, etc.), I was once again very impressed. Also, I'll add that the multi-frequencies seemed to have an extra advantage in a lot of situations.
I owned two Pulse detectors; the White's TDI and the Garrett ATX. I didn't like the TDI much and only kept if for a few months. I really liked the ATX, but it was just too heavy. In the beginning, I didn't know what "hot" mineralized ground was and I did great with my Garrett GTI 2500. I started looking at a GPX 5000 years ago, but just couldn't afford one. I knew they would make some sites like new again.
At present, I own these detectors: Garrett GTI 2500 (couldn't part with my first one), XP Deus, Minelab Equinox 800, White's V3i (this is my second one), Tarsacci MDT 8000, Simplex and the GPX 5000. All the rest, for me, fell short in one area or another. Don't get me wrong, some of them are excellent detectors, but I had learned a lot of stuff by owning these detectors that I was spoiled a little.
I said all that to say this the GPX 5000, in my opinion, beats them all in mineralized soil, but it comes with a steep learning curve. You have to be willing to dig a lot of deep holes and of course find some iron targets but you dig a lot of iron by using the others as well. I had to sell my CTX 3030 and Garrett ATX in order to buy the GPX but I think I made a wise decision based on my first several relic hunts.
Good luck with your Explorer 600 and thanks for watching.

@@SavingLocalHistory Larry I really appreciate learning from you and the many other who have helped me get acquainted with a hobby that I very much enjoy and saving history too. Being less than a year into the hobby, i just did not know what i know now about different soil types etc. It is a learning process and evolution. Since I live in the WV panhandle I think I need a GPX. I have dealer offering me a great price but they are on back order so gives me some time to get more $$ together and learn more ab the machine before actually acquiring it. Your video compliments an outting with a friend of mine who has a GPX 4500 and hits good targets that are registering ferrous and low numbers on my Equinox that I probably would never dig and they turn out to be relics. I also too realize that I will dig my share of nails with it as well but thats part of the hobby to get to the good stuff. Again the VLF Equinox is a great machine and I have dug some neat stuff with it but I think the GPX is taking it to another level that can help in areas that maybe have been hit but missed by other technology Thanks a mill for this
