- Опубліковано 15 вер 2024
- Time for a new week of building! We're joined by special guests Frank Ippolito and Sean Charlesworth to experiment with stop-motion animation. Both Frank and Sean have experience working with stop-motion, and we try our hand at making a short animation with posable sixth-scale figures!
Thanks for Sideshow for these figures

Thanks for watching!
Props for not mentioning Star Wars in the title.
haha
+treebeard Pretty stupid ^^
Star Wars, Sex, Miley Cyrus.. today on Tested :D
It would have been nice to start this video with a sample of the final animation, then go over the details and techniques how it's done.
Pretty sure Robot Chicken shoots on twos at 30fps, which is definitely not comparable to shooting threes or fours at 24fps, it's actually more work than twos at 24fps. Respect the chicken.
+ForlornCreature This is correct, they do shoot in 30fps. Sometimes it is downgraded to 24fps due to some broadcasting services abroad but the work is all in there. I respect the chicken.
#respektthechicken
Respect the chicken.
#respect the chicken
Make it a thing
OH I DO! you betcha pal....i don't hardly have to spank that fucker at all any more!
That takes me back to my animations i made when i was about 14. Used the star wars action figures and a super 8 camera. I was especially proud of the laser shots which were made with pieces of red and green straws sliding over fishing wire. All memory now as the film has been lost.....
Ray Harryhausen. The OG master of stop-frame animation.
Check my channel out
I use dragonframe 4 and hitfilm effects pro. I'm not professional or anything actually I just started like a few months back and I love it.
when i was 12 or so, myself and some friends used to make stop motion paintball videos using legos. I had one of those old sony digital cameras that used floppy disks. each disk could only have 4 or 5 pictures. i would use paint to put in paint splats, then put it all together with windows movie maker, overlaying sound from paintball videos. it all took a long ass time, but i loved it.
So stop motion with Star Wars toys......Someone on Tested has been watching a lot of Robot Chicken lately..... haven't they.
Oh wow, Frank worked with the Chiodo Brothers? That's so cool! :D
Funny that you mentioned LEGO; when I was a kid in the early 80s, we had a B&W CCD camera (literally just a security camera) and a VHS deck that you could actually *frame-advance when paused in REC mode* and I used that to do LEGO stop-motion animation. :D We actually had the camera for a piece of software/hardware for the Macintosh 512k called 'MicroImager' which, afaik, was the first example of consumer image/video capture. So I also made storybooks about my LEGO creations... Albeit with 1-bit color images. (Since the Mac couldn't even do grayscale, just black/white with patterned dithering)
I loved stop motion! tanks for this information! From Brazil!
I've seen quite a few of these with transformers figures and the transformations are the coolest part.
Ha! I'm glad you asked us. I actually did play around with stop motion using action figures. Beast Wars and Spider-Man to be specific.
They're the first few vids on my channel.
It was fun. I'd do it again.
YAS. LOVE THIS. And I would agree, animation people are a special breed of people with a high tolerance for pain..! Hahaha! And props for mentioning Dragonframe!
This video was so right about so many things. Stop motion is hard as an amateur, it's difficult to imagine the amount of artistry that people in Phil Tippet's studio or the people at Laika have to make the movement look so realistic.
STOP MOTION!!!!! FTW!!!!
Hi I have only started stop motion yesterday and you guys have helped me a lot
Too much "intro" tbh, the video starts around 22.17 and forward, you're welcome internetz.
Actually, the video starts at 00:00 if you're actually interested in this stuff.
You have to go to 17:25 to find out they're using Dragonframe for the software ($300).
I really like O!Snap on iPad. Clean, easy, fun, and does things like onion skinning. Plus, if you upgrade to Pro, you can import images from your Photos, so you can use a better camera than the iPad one and gain access to those when you transfer them to your iPad. Definitely recommend this app for kids too! I've used it in school with 9yrs+ and they have created amazing things on it.
Dragonframe and Stop Motion Pro are both great programs to animate with. On the PC/Mac/Linux a new program called Heron Animation is free. It's a bit buggy but you can use a web cam or DSLR if you use a program called Spark O Cam. However you don't want to do anything professional with it. If you delete frames it tends to freak out. Krita is a good paint program to remove rigs/wires for free. It's very similar to Photoshop and you can even animate with it - but only drawn animation. It's great for animatics or storyboards though, and you can test the pacing of your shots. My second choice would be Gimp (for photo manipulation) which is also free, but not very intuitive.
My solution was magnets. The stage on which I would perform the movement of the puppets was wooden, with a metal sheet masking the area. Any cosmetics done to the stage would be thin enough to still allow the magnets to "stick" to the metal beneath. Besides this, yes, I did have an arm attached to the puppet, however those would be phased out with CGI via blue-screen.
I liked this video for two reasons: 1. stop action with action figures. 2. One of the guys is wearing a Pork Chop Express T-shirt. :D
These guys either have a ton of money, or no idea how expensive these figures are. The way they're handling them kills my soul.
Gotten to be 40 something and have never had a celeb crush, never wrote any fan mail or anything like that but Norm... keep it up and I might start your fanclub!
Awesome info. I always wondered how they did this. This was very fun to watch. Thank you.
Wow. Great "build" guys.
Stop Motion Studio is a good App for IPad. We use it to bring children's toys to life.
I remember doing Lego stop motion with this Sony camcorder (which had single frame record) when I was like 12 years old, way back when :D It was a lot of fun. I did a lot of cars driving around.
Putting cars moving around is the easyest part. That's why i loved that part! :-)
You can make the animation look a lot smoother in after effects. Maybe even add motion blur.
Peace and love from Chicago !
As for ways to keep them mounted to the stand, why not attach a painted metal plate to their feet (to match their shoe bottoms in case the underside of their shoes/feet is seen) and use a super strong neodymium magnet under the board? That way you could put them anywhere you want, not just above the holes that you've drilled. You could even, theoretically, mount them to walls and ceilings!
JW3HH
turning a power glove into a capture trigger is a awesome way to make stop motion!
It’s so Adam 😂
With the technology today,no one can even touch Ray Harryhausen's work.
HOORAY!..someone who knows... i just left another you tube vid. and dropped rays name. i grew up with his stuff ...and it has withstood the test of time. you're right ,..considering what they worked with in their day, they were absolute frickin' geniuses, and still are..cool i'm not alone.
This was awesome to watch as an animation hobbyist
Hairspray or drawing fixative!!!!!! it will help with the ghost clothing/hair!!!!!! Animated a yorkie with hair all over it a few months ago and the fur never moved (unless i wanted it to)
Very informative. I hope you guys make more videos. Just got into it and I use S. H. Figuarts and marvel legends.
You will do better to use an electronic cable release. No need to touch the shutter release on the camera, thus avoiding any camera movement at all. Or do you have a cable running from the camera to the computer?
Done from the computer
I created a short stop motion when I was younger of a lego man drowning haha :)
Seeing how rough they were with $200 figures made me cringe
That's why you should do this kind of animation with black séries figures. its well detailed and not to expensive.
no one cares mate
+Creepy Cooter so in order to make a comment, somebody has to care? Good to know. In that case, nobody cars about your response. See how that works? Funny, right? Also, apparently 4 other people had the same thinking as I did, so I think somebody did care. /thread
+Creepy Cooter You are everywhere man! I never thought you would be the same after that 50Cal to the chest!
seriously thoooo I'd be using some black series for this smh
Did you notice with the TESTED logo in the background it looks like a speech-bubble. Luke says "TESTED"
Tested, you're a great channel
Great intro! I'm in pre-production for a stop motion short I came up with. I'll be watching your progress!
This episode of Tested should be called Wasted, as in wasted time.
I've done a few lego stop-motions before, but never as advanced as this!
Lowest ISO for nicest quality isn't necessarily true. Native ISO is best quality, it differs with every camera.
reminds me of when i used a vhs camera and remote to record/pause my first stop motion using clay and micro machines
Back in the good old days Lego used to have a easily posable Technic figure (lego.wikia.com/wiki/TECHNIC_Figure). We had a vhs camera with a stop motion setting, so great fun to make some own short films. Unfortunately there was no Tested in '90s so everything had to learn by the hard way.
japanese anime is kind of a must know when doing stop motion.
they're like the kings of limited movement lol
Look at Rhett & Link on the left wall.
if you have to drill holes in the set for the feet... well surly you're set is going to end up with loads of holes in the floor. Does that mean you have to make duplicate sets?
the way they handled those hot toys I feel like throwing up
I found this video really helpful and informative
I swear Norm has to touch every god damn thing he comes across. Just want to beat him to death with his own arms yelling "why are you hitting yourself"! over and over.
+Creepy Cooter Dont feel bad about being an asshile today. I'm sure you could be one everyday. No, Its not my shit! Even if it was I would still Batman pimp slap Norm like Robin. Regardless!!!! thanks have a great day :)
Based on the t-shirt, Frank has excellent taste in movies.
Can this comment get so many likes for no reason
+Idraki Kader This is not a Buzzfeed video you know...
+Idraki Kader attention seeking comment inbound on your position
i once bought a clone trooper from sideshows. It was the one from the 501th i think? It was the white and bleu one...Anyway as soon as i took it out of the box and moved it the arm broke of...I was able to repair it...But a view days later the other arm came of and both feet where also lose...I never buy anything of sideshows again.
Use magnets in the feet and use a steel table with a green screen on top
Spoke too soon
lol, i know the pain of making walk cycles, ahh and bumping the table! I've made a bunch of stop motions on my channel! : D
The suttle self advertisement. You just had to squeeze that one in their didnt you?
+Keeper of Knowledge It's all about the KNOWLEDGE!!
+RepliCase There is nothing more important than KNAWLEDGE.
+Keeper of Knowledge At the end of the video they asked us to share our stop motions with them, lol, i didn't mean to advertise, sorry! : J
***** LOL it's okay man keep doing what you love and it was a relevant comment so no probs I'll give it a look right now ;)
If you want this video in realtime go to speed 2.
+Damir Poljak (Scruffy) Cruise Control
For the first minute of this clip Frank look's like he's about to murder Norm or He's fantasizing how he's gonna do it
Two special guests? Isn't Frank part of the Tested team?
Did u work for a hour just for head movement??????
anyone knows the game of the software?
can you stop motion ET figure from the film
Upload it here on youtube when you are done
Cool thanks for the video.
very kool show
That was stop motion animation in EP7?? Wow
Can I use any ole camera to do this or should it have a certain feature on it?
This is really amateur work. I know that you guys are new to animation, but at least keep your hands out of the frame. It is like you aren't even trying.
+LFP Animations They flat out said it's just a quick example and the one guy worked on the literal Star Wars movie
This is a UA-cam comment.
+The Sqoou yes, but regardless as a stop motion animator this video made me cringe.
+LFP Animations They'll likely have better ones in their site. This is just a teaser.
+LFP Animations I agree. im not saying im good but I mean come on. these guys didn't try. it feels like it anyway
They flat out told us they are doing this sloppy just to show the process. Holy shit you people are stupid.
What is the software? And how do I get it and is it free if not how mush?🤔❤
I'm glad I stayed up after the Oscars so that I could see this!
+MrMLGuel oh yeah, watched the Oscars... then Tested... Midterm tomorrow can wait.
The Oscars started at midnight in my country... i feel asleep when Stallone came up to talk at the beggining.....
what software did you use to film the stop motion?
the guy wearing the hat, just look like Leonardo in Assassin creed II XD
What if the guys used Bandai Gundam models. Some are extremely articulated (aside from the dang hands that are too small for joints. Regularly, I change the pose of my model to something nice and realistic.
What kind of figures are those, hot toys?
26:12. this is where the super-annoying floating motion for every damn computer game character came from, this bizzare idea geeks have that things are never really "still" well maybe so dork but they also never fluidly bounce around as they stand and as a matter of fact I am sitting almost completley still watching this show!
Everyone is supporting a different vehicle on there shirts =]
Have your ever built one of this Precisoon Armitures for animatedFigures
feeler gauges, I don't think so, more like cutting fluid piping
How are they 0ainted and what material are they Boyilt from
This totally gave me something new to do with my dslr
This was awesome!!! Whats the name of the software?
Looks face at 9:43 is so funny!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Its Luke’s
tipps for budding animators if you in the uk do 25fps. 24fps is the american standard
I cannot for the life of me find feeler gauges like the ones used in this video. Can someone help me please. It looks like they have gator clips on the ends.
Should have gotten Phil Tippet into the action...just saying
I feel bad for asking because I really like the stuff Tested posts, but surely there's gotta be a way I can watch their fully finished animation without becoming a premium member, no?
I enjoyed all 32 minutes of this video only to find out that I can only watch the finished product if I pay :( Hook me up, someone, please
that's BS and for that reason I don't want to see it haha
30:53 You can see tested Dropbox directory XD
Any other programs to use besides dragon frame and after effects there both really expensive.
+Steven Gonzalez Honestly you can start the simple way and just take pictures on a tripod and import them into any editing software.
What software is that?
👍
I enjoyed stop-motion as a child, but now it's just so tedious it looses my interest. Now when I do stop-motion, I get too anxious and too impatient.
hOW ABOUT BUILDING SOME PUPPETS FOR STOP MOTION?
Show the finished product
nice talks,so when you start to do that?
#MakeUA-camGradeAgain
Tall guy looks like a young DiNero.
Wow, stop motion videos are seriously difficult to do!
I see this too often on videos that show computer screens; superfluous crap from other application bouncing onto the screen. Since you know, in advance that you will be featuring software on a computer screen, take a moment and turn off feeds, notifications, alarms and other unrelated BS pop-ups. Other than that, it was enjoyable to see some of the process of stop animation.
Did he call Finn "Phil"? #rekt
