The purpleheart and green heart go great together
They really do, like they were made for each other 😀
I always smile when someone describes a beautiful piece of wood as "scrap" when you can turn it into something like this.
Very true but is was a mess especially on one side 😀
Same. That wood is so not scrap. It may be left-overs, but it's not scrap 😊
Just beautiful Mike and a very enjoyable video. Thank you for sharing
@@albertdawson6814 You're welcome 😀
I found myself smiling at the different colors in the green heart...then contrasted against the purple heart...wow! Adding the sliver to the handle was perfect.
What a talent God has given you! Yes, a person can train to turn wood, but only an artist can see the hidden jewel waiting to emerge.
Wow thanks Cynthia that is so nice of you to say, I think I'm blushing! 😀
2:56: "Wish I had a large mallet to do that with." 😁 Love hearing you talk through your thoughts and decisions. So interesting. Happy New Year Mike and everyone!
Haha thanks so much Charmaine 😀
Wow! That's not "scrap" anymore... now something beautiful. Thanks for sharing the transformation.
You're welcome Bruce and thanks 😀
12 seconds in the video and i can already feel the beauty you will create
Thanks so much 😊
Honestly this is my favourite wood turning channel at the moment. I like the way you explain the process and not afraid to show when it doesn’t go to plan!
Wow, thank you! Talking of not going to plan, you may like to watch my next video out on Tuesday 😀
Best looking mallet ever!
Thanks Chris 😀
Looks like 'crazy quilt' meets 'stained glass', topped off with that beautiful oak lid to tone it down. Love it!
Thanks Barbara, I love this one 😀
ohhh, that's the most beautiful mallet, it would hurt my heart to actually hit stuff with it!!!!! just gorgeous!
Haha thanks Linda 😀
I don't think I'll ever reach this level of artistry but this video inspired me to make more composite objects. Oh! and the grain on that Purpleheart!
Thanks so much, please do have a try, I'm no great turner but I'm not scared to have a go. All the best, Mike
Artwork in a mallet , ive never seen one as nice 👍👍👍
Thanks so much Vini 😀
Turned out beautifully. Love those timbers together!
Thank you very much Scott 😊
Wow, that is such a beautiful mallet... Way too beautiful to ever use!
Thank you very much, but I will be using it 😀
What a beautiful mallet !!!
Thanks Cecilia 😀
I've never worked with green heart....
It is beautiful! On my bucket list
Beautiful wood but really hard! 😀
Thank you for the tips on how to restore purple heart to its natural colour. A great project too.
Glad it was helpful! All the best, Mike 🙂
I keep imagining a high court judge using this mallet as a gavel. 😊
Haha sounds like it could do the sentencing and the execution as well lol 😀
I always appreciate the names of wood working joints.
You're welcome 😁 I try to help where I can
Absolutely Stunning! (for a mallet) 😂👌
Haha thanks Steve 😁
Now that is different, and I like different. As someone who considers themselves to have a grasp of the English language, I can also tell you that Purplisation is a perfectly respectable word 🌞
Haha thanks Ray, you have just made me feel better about it 😂
@@MikeHolton I like you Mike. So easily pleased and you laugh at my ‘jokes’ 🌞
@@raydriver7300 I'm a big kid at heart 😂
Very practical and yet beautiful piece 👌
Thank you! 😊
What a great way to make a very useful Tool. I loved the way the Greenheart kept changing colour as you were turning it. Lovely piece of working Tool.
Thank you so much Peter, some of those cross grain cuts got very shiny! 😀
Drilling the hole had me clinching my teeth!
That was so hard!!!! 😀
That is a Hefty mallet!! Great job.
I certainly is, thanks Jason 😀
What a hefty mallet!
Thanks Jake 😀
Have a happy new year yourself
Thanks Paul 😀
Wow, a piece of art that works part time as tool.
Thanks Judith, the best of both worlds 😀
I love purpleheart and didn't know there was such a thing as greenheart. Thanks for the lesson! Beautiful work!
You are so welcome Beth, you can also get brownheart, redheart, yellowheart and blackheart 😀
That’s one beast of a mallet Chief
Haha thanks Michael 😁
Was a pleasure watching your video
Thanks so much 😀
Love the grain and the color of both woods. My husband is a carpenter and he would really appreiciated this one
Thanks Rena, I hope he would like it as well 😀
I think those two woods make a great combination
Thanks so much 😊
I like mallets and hammers, well played Mike
Me too 😀 thanks Mick
Hi Mike, that was a different turning to do. You certainly know how to challenge your self. As always you skillfully and artistically amazed everyone with the finished Mallet. Thanks for the video looing forward to the next one.⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐
Thank you so much Roy, more to come, I hope 😀
Beautiful two colors together.
Thanks Tracy 😀
I want that mallet more than I ever wanted anything.. ever.
😳😳
Haha thanks but this one is not for sale lol 😀
OMG - great use of a beautiful piece of greenheart.
I have some old chunks of GH that were used for the lock gates in Bristol. They were replaced after about 70 years with new ones 15 years ago. And I rescued 3 chunks as they were due to be thrown out. Now I have a fabulous use for a piece of it.
Beautiful work tool and gorgeous execution.
Wow I love wood that has a piece of history behind it 😀
well done mallet
Thanks Matt 😀
Indeed a great way to start the new year watching you and your fantastic hands creating this mallet. Good job, Mike!
Thank you very much 😀
Oh wow Mike that must be the most beautiful mallet in the world❤
Thanks Jan, that is very nice of you to say 😀
Beautiful mallet. 2 kilo will do quite a bit of pulverizing.😂 It always bothers me when woodworkers make "tools" and people tell us to keep them for show. Using a beautifully crafted "tool" often resonates into what we are using it on. I use every tool I make regardless if its heirloom quality or not. Simply put, if I wear it out, I will make a replacement.
Well put Paul, if this one wears out I will make another but it will be a LOT simpler lol 😀
You're gonna have to work damn hard to wear out that beast!!
@@philgallagher1 very true and if I don't manage I will pass it onto one of my sons to keep trying 😊
What a beautiful hammer.
I love it 😃
That turned out beautifully
Thanks Kym 😀
Beautiful mallet.
You talk frequently about going to sharpen your tools, and they certainly seem to be quite sharp. I'd love to see a video about your sharpening tools and techniques!
Hi Paul, it will be coming soon, it will not be a complete video but I will be showing how I do it 😀
Now that's one high class hitting stick. I've never had a need for that kind of mallet, but if I do in future I'm going to be disappointed that I can't find one like this 😄
Haha you can always make on 😀
Beautiful mallet
Thanks Jim 😀
I’ve never seen either one of these woods before until now. Very nice. Love the woods. Love the green heart the purple heart. Great job Mike that is a stunning mallet.
Thanks so much Ray, one day I want to make a bowl from all the woods with heart in their name, greenheart, brownheart, purpleheart, yellowheart, redheart and I believe there is a blackheart as well.
@@MikeHolton I can’t wait to see the results of all of those , especially the black heart. I love the grain patterns in the wood. Have a great day Mike.
@@raywaltersjr.2146 Thanks Ray, same to you
I really like the purple heart
Thanks, it is a beautiful wood 😃
I’m not a woodturner, but I find your videos educational and enjoyable. My father was a carpenter and seeing you enjoy the creation process reminds me of him. Cheers!
Thanks so much Louisa, so nice of you to say, all the best, Mike 😀
Something so practical that looks so amazing, great work once again.
Thank you Simon 😊
I wouldn't have thought of that combination, but it worked out very nice indeed!
Thanks Dolores, glad you like it 😀
Premium grade mallet Mike. Brave choice doing a blind wedge. Think I'd have cut the slot 90 degrees further round so it's perpendicular to the laminated greenheart fillet.
You're right I really should have, all I needed to do was think about it a bit more lol 🤣
@@MikeHolton yeah, join me and the legions who are sat wondering if we've considered every possible angle, getting frustrated at the lack of actual progress, only for a spark of genius to come a fraction of a second too late. If the workshop survived the gale force winds of earlier in the week, I look forward to your next video.
@@user-eu1qt2wu8b We all survived thanks and the next video will be out on Tuesday, not going to give too much away but I will say thanks goodness I had a plan B 😀
Beautiful work! I was watching with the sound off because my hubby is watching the football game, so I didn’t know exactly what you were making until I read some of the comments. I’m thinking that it would be the perfect weapon to keep by the door to ward off any intruders! It’s short, so you don’t need as much swinging radius as a baseball bat. It’s hefty enough that it dam be used to knock a firearm out of an intruder’s hand before clobbering him over the head to render him unconscious. It’s a sad state of affairs that we live in here in the US, where crime is rampant enough that I see a self-defense weapon first off when seeing a beautiful piece of woodworking.
That is sad but at least I can now call it a tactical mallet 😀
Thats a beast of a mallet 🙂
Thanks Ricky 👍
Mike that green & purple heart wood is stunning & ur mallet is fabulous 😀
Thanks Karen, I can't wait to hit something with it 😀
Love what you do with scraps
Me too 😀
What a beautiful tool....I would almost be unable to use it!
Haha I keep meaning to but have not yet 😂
Thats a damn nice mallet. Bravo..!
Thanks so much 😀
Love purpleheart. Never heard of green heart. Great mallet Mike thanks for the upload
You're welcome Stephen, you can also get redheart, yellowheart, brownheart and I believe blackheart.
That is an awesome mallet, I love the colours.
Thank you! Cheers Mark 😀
Such beautiful wood, warm looking, lovely to look at but even more so to use.
It really is, can't wait to use it 😀
nicest mallet in the world sounds about right. PS watching and catching up to help with the transition season!
Thanks so much Sara 😃
A very interesting and creative piece, Mike, and always, an enjoyable journey! I learned a lot from watching you do this one, different techniques and decisions you made. The addition of the green heart to the handle makes a good contrast and ties the handle to the mallet head.
Thanks so much my friend, looking back I think a could of my decisions were questionable but I have learned and the next one will be better 😀
Very awesome mallet. The design is amazing. Keep up the awesome work. 👽
Thanks my friend, I will do my best as always 😀
Beautiful colour as as expected.
Thanks, this wood is hard to beat 😀
Don't you love South American hard woods? No shavings, all dust. Nice mallet. Good for braining someone. :)
I do indeed but they can get pretty hard lol 😀
Very cool, Mike! But here's the thing I don't get... how can wood be SO colorful and the grain SO gorgeous????? How????? One of life's mysteries I guess. Here's a smooch for Hooch 😘
Good question and I have no answer but I completely agree, smooch will be passed on 😀
❤awesome mallet
Thanks Danny, I do too 😀
That is one awesome mallet Mike. I love the wood combination.
Thanks, I appreciate it 😀
This is beautiful. I love the handle shape in particular.
Thank you so much! 😊
Wow Mike, what a great looking mallet! I do love how greenheart looks even in its natural state, such a beautiful wood.
Thanks my friend, it is pretty amazing wood!! 😀
Loved watching you making this one. Very different and a beautiful choice of wood! Great Job Mike!
Thanks William, that greenheart is hard as nails lol 😀
Always a unique wood and project.... Great job Mike...
Cheers Dale, all the best, Mike 😀
Someone's got to say it - What a Smashing project! Also, I've got an idea for a drinking game on a similar theme - every time Mike sharpens up, you've got to do a shot I challenge anyone to get through the mallet body turning without getting properly smashed!😉
Haha great idea for a game, wonder how it would end up if I played during filming ? Probably very badly lol
Beautiful, looks like a lamp.
It would make a very cool lamp😀
Well done Mike!
Thanks Scott 😀
The first dent is the hardest. But after that it's just 'character'. Lovely work Mike, like the blind fox wotchermecallit to fix it in place.
Haha I hate having to remember the names of things! Many thanks, Mike
I love the mallet it looks so cool
Thanks so much Jerimiah 😀
Beautiful combination of woods.
Thank you very much! 😀
Happy New Year! God bless you! 💜
Same to you! All the best, Mike 😀
Master craftsman
Thanks so much 😊
I love the colors.
Thanks Jim 😀
Very nice. I love the purple wood color, nice creation
Thanks Jennifer, the colour is quite something! 😀
I would be sick to my stomach if I saw that mallet smack the end of a chisel. I do wood carving too and that mallet would be on a display shelf only. Lol. Beautiful work as usual Mike.
Haha thanks my friend, if I use it I'll let you know so you can look away 😀
Like it. It is nice seeing you talking through the process. Thanks
Glad you enjoyed it, all the best, Mike
Hello Mike. A happy new year to you, your family and all your viewers. I hope it is a good one for all.
I really enjoyed watching you turn two lovely pieces of wood into a very practical, but beautiful, working tool. The fact that it is custom made to your hand will make it even more user friendly. And I’m sure it is going to give you many years of good service and that those watching will be able to see some fabulous pieces being created as a result.
Happy new year to you and yours as well, this was a lot of fun and I've been wanting to make a mallet for a while now. All I need is something big enough to hit with it, I tried the kids but not much resistance 😀
@@MikeHolton Glad the kids survived! I might need to borrow it to try out on my grandsons! 😆😆
@@Angela-en6ohhaha 😂
Well done.
Thanks so much 😀
Solid Work
Thanks my friend 😊
Very nice mallet
I think so too, thanks Simon 😀
Beautiful working piece of art. If you can do work with a piece of art it should make you smile😂.
Thank you so much 😀
Wow. Didnt know what you were talking about most of the time but I sure know a beautiful mallet when I see one. Beautiful wood!!
Thank you very much and don’t worry I don’t know either 😁
@@MikeHolton LOL
Mike that's a bruiser of a mallet well done mate 👍 😊
Thanks William, the kids better look out 😀
It came out a treat.
Thanks Lewis 😀
What a great looking mallet Mike. I do like that Purple Heart. And now I know what a blind fox wedged mortise and tenon joint is. A clever way to fasten with or without glue. I can imagine using this mallet in the shop and getting a nice upper body workout at the same time. Nice finish also. Thanks for the education. Bill Riley.
Thanks Bill, it will be a work out and I must remember to swap hands or I'll be lopsided lol 😀
Definitely use that bad boy! Hope we get to see it's first war wound?
I think it'll look even more beautiful in about 20 years when it's work worn, great job you're a pleasure to watch work👍
Thanks so much, I will certainly let everyone see it in action for the first time 😀
Really got me hooked. Beautiful wood.
Thanks Andrew, glad you enjoyed it 😁
Happy New Year Mike and all fellow subscribers 🎉❤
I would need 2 of these beautiful mallets, if I was a wood carver, 1 to use and 1 to show off its beauty and become a future family heirloom! I really admire your artistic talent and vision. Perfect natural and stunning colours and beautiful grained wood. Such a beautiful tool for you to enjoy for many years to come. Thanks Mike for sharing this for us all to enjoy with you. 😊
Thanks so much Shelley, looks like I had better make another 😀 all the best for a wonderful new year
Mike - Another brilliant project. I do enjoy it when people use their skills to make stuff that us mere mortals have to buy!!
I just had a couple of things to say...
Firstly, Happy New Year!
Secondly, "PURPLISATION" is a FINE word! It perfectly sums up what happens to Purple heart.
Finally, the SIZE of that mallet!! Are you trying out for the role of THOR?? LOL!!
Haha Thanks Phil, I do like this mallet but I may have to make a smaller one for that I can actually wield, my Thor days are long behind me 😂
really lovely, everything came together so well!!
Thanks so much! 😊
