Also the finishing before the texturing will mean that the gold is that much more clean and not discolored by the stain. The black/purple stain really made the wood pop. That was a really good idea.
Thanks Thomas 😀
Another Gorgeous Vase! Purple was the PERFECT color to go with the gold!
Thanks Carl 😃
I wasn’t sure if I was going to like the finished product, but I do! Very interesting and beautiful.
Thanks so much Louisa 😊
I got scared for a second when you brought out the gold color, but the finished vase turned out great.
Haha, I have lots more colours coming 😄
It's wonderful to see artists try out new stuff though. Your hollowing is getting very adventurous and advanced so I have no doubt you'll nail the ideas you have in your minds eye in no time too
Thanks Lois, I love trying new things to keep me learning and progressing 😃
This one, even for an experiment, is I think, extraordinary. In some ways the end result of the stain + shine + gold inset + use of the cut/buffing heads is to me very reminiscent of that 70's 'faux antique' 'distressed finish' that was all the rage for giving a new life to "semi" old furniture. A very sound step outside the norm of relief finishes on turned items. I do very much like it.👌👍👍👍
Thanks so much Christopher, I love the way it came out and has given me so many ideas for more 😃
Definitely funky! I love the way the colour picked out the grain and emphasised the gold.
Thanks Rachel, this is a good starting point and has given me loads of ideas 😀
even better@@MikeHolton
I quite like how that pattern turned out, even with the unexpected spacing. Very cool result.
Thanks Ronnie, always lots to learn the first time you try something 😀
This worked really well. The organic pattern is really conducive to this kind of hand held tool approach.
Thanks Ben, I think so to 😀
Hey Mike,
I could almost smell the Cherry Wood watching you turn it, mmm. The gold gilding wax is a great look, and the finish is gorgeous.
An Alligator inlay Hollow form.
Thanks again for the great work!
Thanks Fiona, I have ordered more gilding wax in lots of colours to play with 😀
YES!!!! I saw this video a while ago and really loved that pattern. Wanted to see it again. So glad I finally found it again.
Thanks Ben, this was a lot of fun 😀
I love that you added the dark to bring out the grain. Very very nice
Thanks so much 😀
Run the top under a hot tap and the shellac will give in. Beautiful piece you’ve created.
It was linseed oil but I'll give it a go 😄
The end result looks really interesting. Very organic.
Thanks Stephen 😀
I love watching everything you make. It is all beautiful and perfectly done.
Thank you so much! 😀
Colouring and parenting are great, I hope you find what really works perfectly for you.
I'll keep going till I have exhausted all possibilities 😀
Nice textural element. I would try staining the indents darker and making the raised parts lighter. The highlights would more naturally come to foreground with the body of the vase. Fun to watch!
Thanks for the tips Penny, I have so much to try with this technique 😀
Very unique! Here's a smooch for Hooch 😘
Aw thanks, I'll pass it on 😀
Maybe make a video or two for lessons. How you hold the tools. You know. For those of us just starting out.
Hi Mark, I will have a think but it is a nice idea, thanks 😀
I love it! Looks like it took a little patience to deal with all the ascents. Thanks for sharing Mike!
Thanks Brenda, I can do patience pretty well, I think it took about 25 minutes to do the first pass 😀
The vase looks terrific. Very well done, if you had not said, we would not have know this was an experiment.
I personally like the wider walls/borders between the shapes.
Dave.
Thanks Dave, not what I was hoping for but I do still like it 😀
...nice! I have a cherry log in my garden, it died a year ago. Just need a lathe and some chisels! ;)
Haha better get on it 😀
Lovely vase and I liked your “texturing”. Infra red heater installed and works brilliantly.
Great to hear, I'll into getting one 😀
It's great you try new techniques and hone new skills. It is impressive and great to see your thought processies.
Thanks Robert, this has given me so many ideas for future projects 😊
Turned out beautifully. Great technique with so many possibilities Thanks for sharing.
Thanks Joyce, it has given me loads of ideas as well 😀
The dye really woke up the grain in that cherry. I’ve not done that method yet of grinding in a pattern but I really think you have done it justice. It gets my gears turning on some of my own projects. Excellent as usual brother.
Thanks! I love doing things like this, it sparks so many ideas for more work 😃
Mike, i like that you are not scared to try a new something new. i looks great thanks
Thanks Bryce, I love to try new things as it generally leads to more and more interesting projects 😊
Reminds me of the Morel mushroom pattern! Just another organic piece of art. Oh, by the way, “messing around “ is always the creative process! From Kentucky, land of the Morel!
Thanks Larry, 'messing around' is a great way to have fun without adding expectations or pressure, just having fun 😀
I'm glad you were able to cut away the rot and produce a nice piece
Thanks, the rot did not cause as many problems as I thought 😀
For an Experiment, I think it was an excellent result.
Cheers Pete 😃
Mike just a quick tip, When using the swan neck make sure the tool rest is on the flat bar it stops it from trying to twist. The Vase turned out really good, Keep up the Fantastic video's
Haha thanks Doug, I remembered that soon after I started to use it and moved the tool rest back 😃
Wow! Another great beautiful outcome. I love the added texture.
Thanks Harold 😃
Und ob das gefällt 👌Eine wunderschöne Vase mit tollen Farben. Klasse gemacht von Dir👏
Danke, mein Freund, das hat mir viele Ideen für die Zukunft gegeben
What a lovely piece, Mike. Well worth the time and trouble. My chuck rattled and I discovered it was because the bolts were loose 🤔 Did I tell you that hard working arable farmers are outstanding in their field 🌞
Haha the old jokes are the best 😄
This experiment turned out quite nice. I bet the next one will be even better.
I really hope so 😀
Great little cherry vase. Love the finish and design you put on it.
Thanks so much 😊
Love the vase Mike
Thanks Shirley 😀
So simple to look at, makes you look again. Really nice, subtle. Love it!🏆
Thank you! 😊
Again you have produced an unique design, starting from what was questionable at best material.
I like the color you developed - It has a depth that black lacks by itself.
Looking forward to your next effort - You never fail to impress.
Thanks so much Dave, the end colour was more of a happy accident 😀
Just lovely.
Thanks 👍
Weirdly, when you started using the roughing gouge, I could smell the cherry wood! I have turned a couple of vases out of cherry myself and obviously my brain could remember the aroma. 😊
The smell is beautiful but unfortunately due to my cold I did not smell a thing this time 😄
Beautiful piece you made there Mike! It has almost an African feel to it with the reticulated pattern. I really like the gold highlights on the cutouts. Great job as always!
Thank you very much William, I have to paint over them again so in the future best to do them last 😄
Beautiful contrast
Thank you so much 😀
It’s always fun to watch your creativity at work!
Thanks so much 😊
I hope you feel better soon. Thank you for another great video!
Thank you! I'm sure I will, all the best, Mike 😄
I love your creativity Mike
Thanks Mick 😄
Always worth watching
Thanks Vivian 😊
Hi Mike, really enjoy your commentary and the way you think through the piece as you make it.
Thanks so much Tony 😄
Love that Mike!!! Love the black/purple 💜
Thanks Donna 😊
A beautiful vase. Inspiring!
Glad you like it 😃
Love this piece.. definitely unique!
Thanks so much 😀
Absolutely beautiful. The pattern looks really good on it.
Thank you! 😊
Mike, another beautiful creation! The gold honeycomb looks even better after sanding giving each cell a distinctive frame, making the gold pop so much more. Just perfect! ❤ I can’t wait to see where you’re going to take us next. ❤
Thanks Shelley, I have so many ideas I'm finding it hard to decide what to do next lol 😊
For experimental piece I think it turn out pretty good. I first thought it looked like a turtle shell pattern but in the end it reminded me more of a giraffe shape pattern. I liked the color on this one. Looking forward to you experimenting again with this pattern
Thanks Teresa, I was thinking giraffe as well 😀
What a wonderful experiment!
Thanks Dorothy 😀
This is a beautiful vase.
Thanks so much 😊
That looks amazing, loving the contrast.
Thanks Mark 😄
Thanks for sharing
Thanks for watching! 😀
I like everything about it other than the black.
That is fair enough 😃
Now see, this one I really like. Bueatiful & Practical! I could see this as a stand alone or with a flower arrangement. 😊
Thank you Lara😊
Brilliant catch on only localized sanding next time. The cell walls are more of a triangle cross section. I'm going to remember that!
Thanks, lot's learned and loads of new ideas for the future 😊
Turned out Great Mike, thanks! I think the subtle color is perfect for the piece.
Thanks Steve, all the best, Mike 😀
Fun piece!
Thanks 👍
Beautiful vase
Thanks 🙏
Looks brilliant mike
Thanks Raymond 😀
I like it just like that!!
Thanks 😀
Very interesting and inspirational. Very attractive. Terry downunder
Glad you enjoyed it Terry 😀
My folks cut down a Bradford Pear Tree. The wood is very nice orange colors. I saw several pieces that had knots, crotches, and limbs. It will be scooped up in the next day or two by the county and deposited in a land fill.
That is such a shame, you should save a few pieces 😄
Another stunner!
Thanks James 😄
That pattern is really beautiful. 😊 Great vase!
Thanks so much Andrea 😀
I rather liked the pattern as it was. As always you do beautiful work and are always entertaining thank you for your efforts 😊
Thank you! And thanks for your support ☺️
This is stunning.. Love it!
Thank you so much! 😊
Love watching your creativity and skill.
Thanks Deb 😀
Super style choices.
Thanks Mark 😊
I finally got some cherry it’s still green I’ve turned some of it Having to let it dry you did something I been thinking about so gonna try it you did a great job I love it thanks
Thanks Jim, let me know how you get on 😀
It became a work of art 👍👍
Thanks my friend, you channel is doing great!!!
What a cool experiment and it turned out pretty cool! I like the gold "foil" for the texture but if you try this again, the gold would really pop if the wood was really dark (i.e.: walnut or stained/dyed really dark). Another really interesting video. Thank you so much, Mike!
I completely agree Tom, I was trying to dye it dark but could see it would not take it. 😀
Great to watch I long for the day I have a lathe in my workshop
Many thanks, Mike 😀
I love how unique this piece turned out. Very beautiful.
Thanks so much 😀
Very nice The carved design is beautiful. Thanks for another great video.
Thanks David and thanks for watching 😀
Cool!
Thanks Dana 😀
Love this vase! Take care & get well.

Excellent, love it!
Thanks Scott 😃
I am excited to see you doing more projects with this technique!
Thanks Molly, they will be coming soon 😀
I love the creativeness in this piece. Well done.
Thanks Mark 😄
Wow, beautiful!
Thanks Kathryn 😀
Very nice. I like the pattern the way it is. Reminds me of an ant farm with all the tunnels.
Thank you very much that is an interesting observation! 😀
I love this one. Beautiful and I love the color.
Thank you Debora 😊
That is a lovely idea and the result is very effective.
Thanks John, some practice to do but this is a good start and has given me loads of ideas 😀
For a test piece this turned out beautiful.... I was adding the black would ruin it but I love the way it brought out the grain..... Great job Mike. .
Thanks so much Dale 😊
I love the new pattern. Looking forward to seeing more of it.
Thank you! 😊 more to come
Beautiful! ❤
Thank you! 😊
Love watching you turn and awaiting the final results; always enlightening. Thank you
Thanks so much Andrew 😊
Adding the grain pop was a definite plus. It made the carving stand out even more. Hope you get to the look that you envisioned.
Thanks Valerie, now I have taken the first step I can move forward and get better 😊
Very inspiring piece
Thanks so much 😊
I appreciate you showing us trying new things live. And watching the changes as they happen.
