- In this video, I'm turning a Laburnum log into a wood turned vase.
This vase has a really cool look - it looks like ET has called home! woodturning is a great way to add some decorative detail to your home, and this vase is a perfect example of how easy it is to turn a log into a beautiful piece of art. If you're interested in starting woodturning, this video is a great introduction to the art form. Thanks for watching!

Mike!
I enjoyed this so much
The shape that you
created looks
so elegant
strong and well
proportioned and
the natural edge
you fashioned in
the rim design
is so resonant
with the uncut
laburnum log
love everything
"Parting tool" is my favorite part of your videos, especially because we don't get it every time.
The beauty shots at the end are fabulous.
Most creative reply EVER!! Thanks so much my friend, I'm not a fan of the parting tool but am getting better which is why you got to see it this time 😀. All the best, MIke
Beautiful vase, or as I call it, a vase, although my partner says vase. Vase, vase, or vase it still looks great.
@@user-ml8je4zj1t haha thanks 😀
I really enjoy that you voice your design thoughts as you go! I like seeing the creative process as it develops. And your final result is always stunning.
Thanks Leslie, I feel if I can share what I'm thinking then hopefully we can all learn together. All the best, Mike 😀
I appreciate being in on the creative process, even if vicariously. Some of the other YT wood turners keep one in the dark, until the project is nearly complete. What's even worse are the guys who try to pantomime and, I suppose, appeal to an international audience, but bewilder most of the audience. At least Harpo Marx had Chico to interpret for him. Lol.
@@j.g.campbell3440 Thanks Leslie, when I started out on this journey I knew that I just wanted to keep it as real and as honest as I could. I'm not pretending to be any great turner, I make mistakes like everyone else and when I do, I show them and talk about what I did wrong. I want to help make a community of like minded people who just love to be creative and have fun while doing it. Mike
Feminine is an appropriate phrase. You could also say that it is elegant or even sensual. As I was watching you work it early on I thought of a more wasp-waisted look with a flared out base.
IMHO, Sometimes people get so sensitive about what they say or can't say that the words they eventually settle upon don't mean much at all.
You are right Tisha and I hate it. I spend so much of my time trying hard not to offend anyone I loose the moment. Oh well, all the best, Mike
I love how you collaborate with the pieces of wood you're turning. You're definitely coming in with your own ideas, but wind up with a beautiful conversation back and forth as the piece progresses.
Also thank you for all your explanations along the way. I don't know if I'll ever turn wood myself, but I feel a little more prepared to take a class after every video of yours I watch.
Thanks Morgan I appreciate it, all the best, Mike 😃
I get entirely too excited when I see that you've posted a brand new video!
Soooo glad it's not only me! 😋
And I haven't even finished watching the video yet - matter of fact I had just started. I couldn't even wait to write the comment!@@fionacrouch1732
Lol I try very hard to practice patience and finish watching, and then read all comments before posting mine
Haha thanks Ronnie and Fiona, you guys are amazing 😀
ET evolved into a lovely shaped vase Mike. Beautiful grain pattern, well done.
Glad you like it, all the best, Mike
Mike..... that vase is a thing of beauty!...... the grain is wonderful...... great job, you never disappoint...

Beautiful emergent design, and the figure complements it.
Cheers Dave, for a while I was not sure I would find what I was looking for but very happy with the end result 😀

Thanks Paul, laburnum never disappoints 😀
The grain in that wood is beautiful
Thanks Laburnum is hard to beat 😀
You've really worked your magic on this lovely vase.❤❤
Thanks so much Audie, all the best, Mike 😀
I enjoy watching you design on the fly. I know you have an initial idea of what you’re creating, but watching you make those little adjustments along the way is what makes it so enjoyable for me. Beautiful project.
Thanks Scott, initial plans are just a guide, you never know what the wood wants until you get into it 😀
My goodness, I really enjoyed watching this one. That is so beautiful !
Glad you enjoyed it Nana, I loved making it 😊
Beautiful piece of wood! The figuring makes it extra special!!
I think so too! 😃
What gorgeous wood. The markings are really nice. The vase is absolutely beautiful. ❤❤😊😊

Beautiful Vase. That Wood is amazing and very beautiful grain as well.
Thanks Michael, all the best, Mike 😀
I'm so glad that you didn't face off the top of the vase, the result is stunning.
Thank you for sharing
Thanks David, me too, I was desperately trying to keep the top as natural as possible 😀
Very nice work Mike. I'm glad you finally got a steady rest.
Thanks Loran, it needed to be done, now I have way more options 😀
Stunning piece love the shape Laburnum is wonderful wood to turn
Thank you very much Colin, I have to agree, it is amazing wood
That really IS a beauty. I love the patterns and everything about it!
Thanks, this gave me problems for a while, I could not quite find the shape I thought would work but got there in the end 😀
Laburnum is beautiful
Spot on advice about safety.
Thanks Mick, safety has to the No1 concern. 😀
That laburnum is amazing!
Thanks Jeramiah, it is such a beautiful wood! 😀
Mike what an outstanding piece with Fantastic grain pattern. 🙌🙌🙌🙌🙌🙌🙌🙌.
Cheers Doug 😀 quite happy with this one
Such a beautiful, elegant vase. I love the curves and the asymmetrical rim.
The bidding war has already begun on ebay! I won't stand a chance.
Sorry Rachel, I still intend to put a few fixed price items out as soon as I have time to get on the lathe 😀
Absolutely stunning! One of my favorites 😍 ❤️ ♥️ 💕
Thank you!! 😊
Beautiful piece from such an odd shape log. Thanks for sharing the process from beginning to end.

Just beautiful! I like that you saved the wonky top. 🤗
Thank you! 😊
Wow that's amazing and beautiful vase and a beautiful laburnum timber to .
Thanks Lee, laburnum is hard to beat for colour and grain 😀
Beautiful piece of wood. Love the grain and sheen. Great job as always.
Thanks Linda, so nice of you to say 😁
This wood looks fantastic, ive never heard of Laburnum but now i want to get my hands on some. I think this vase turned out really well, it should display nicely anywhere.
Thanks my friend, I'm very happy with the end result 😀
That wood is beautiful, I don't think I have ever heard of it before.
Thanks Elizabeth, laburnum is a beautiful wood, quite common in the UK
Amazing grain on this vase. Very beautiful Mike.
Thanks so much Mary, the grain is just amazing! 😀
Mike, the laburnum piece was a joy to watch. I have a similar looking piece of podocarpus that, after watching your video, am a little more comfortable trying to turn it. As always thanks for taking the time to do the videos and walking us through your thought process.
Thanks so much podocarpus is something I have never turned, what is it like? All the best, Mike
Yet another stunning piece. I only found your channel a few months ago and your work and methods really lift my heart to turn similar projects. I often look at pieces of wood in my workshop and cannot imagine what to turn with it. Watching your videos I now look at the bits in a different light.
Thank you so much Ivan, that is so nice of you to say 😀
Hello Mike. That has turned out absolutely beautifully. The markings on the wood reminded me of the atmospheric isobars on a weather map. And with the storms we have had recently, it was a very timely reminder. Thank you for showing this wonderful piece of art.
Thank you very much Angela, yep the weather has been pretty rough here as well, where are you from? 😀
@@MikeHolton Hello Mike. We were taking a break in Wales when Agnes came through and “trapped” us in the house for two days. Back home in Cornwall, we had the last of the recent storm with 60mph winds and a flooded garage. And I am NOT good at bailing out water. But it’s Britain! We “do” weather! And there have been a lot more people around the country severely affected. So that’s why your beautiful vase reminded me of closely watching the weather forecasts. But I do hope you and you family survived it all. Have a great week.
@@Angela-en6oh You too Angela, I live in the North East of England and it was not as bad up here bust still not great. I live on top of a hill so the winds are always a problem. All the best, Mike
Another design based on thinking on the go. Amazing end result. Cheers
Thank you! Cheers Peter, it took a bit of finding but we got there 🙂
I don’t know if you’ll be able to relate to this, but I spend a lot of time on UA-cam, and sometimes I’ll come across some niche that I know nothing about but really enjoy watching for hours. But usually the people I come across have 1m+ subs, but not this time. Pretty cool to see what you do, thanks for posting your hobby! I’ll keep watching!
Haha of course I can relate, I watch a lot of videos and follow other people in areas I have never tried, I love watching skilled people work. I am honoured that you like my work and have decided to stay a while, the channel is still fairly young, it will be 2 next March so I still have a lot to learn. All the best, Mike
Love the vase! 😊 Impeccable artistic vision. And I do think we can call it feminine. It reminds me of a classic evening dress. Beautiful!
Yes! Thanks Andrea, I know exactly what you mean 😀
Great work as always, always appreciate you talking through your thoughts as the design progresses
Thank you! I appreciate that 😊
Gorgeous wood, impeccable craftsmanship. I really enjoy your narration style. Learning a lot from you...thank you.
Thanks so muck Leigh, hopefully we are all learning together 😀
The Laburnum does have a beautiful grain structure. Nice choice of the top rim.
Thanks Michael, this was a hard shape to find, normally they come quite easily but not this time.
Stunning grain pattern.
Great shape too.
Glad you like it! All the best, Mike 😀
When the grain was revealed... Wow!
It's always the best bit for me too 😀
I love how you came up with a beautiful solution to a really weird piece of wood. I love the butterscotchy look of the wood, too. Well done! 👍
Thanks Tom, I'm now going to use the word butterscotchy in the future to describe the colour 😜😀
@@MikeHolton Like I said before, I went to collij and speak real good.

I love asymmetrical pieces. Gorgeous.
Me too! All the best, Mike 😀
Beautiful, as always.
Thank you! Cheers Paul 🙂
Great shape beautiful wood the grain is amazing, great work 🎉❤
Thanks so much Peter 😁
I´m too much of a practical person, with a vase I would want to put fresh flowers in it, that´s why I wouldn´t want a wooden vase without some kind of waterproof inside... but... the wood!!! The shape!!! The wood!!! Such a beauty!
Thanks Judith, I do want to make a waterproof vase very soon so watch this space, hopefully before Christmas.
WOW Mike 😯. What a score !!!! First time I've seen Laburnum. What beautiful character and charm it has. I have to get me a chunk of that. How's is it that something so pretty ( even the tree itself ) can be poisonous ???😂😂😂. Outstanding work as expected neighbor.
Haha thanks my friend, the seeds from the tree can kill if digested! All the best, Mike
@@MikeHolton Thanks for the info 😊
@@dontarguewafool955 You're welcome 😀
Gorgeous. Grain pattern is stunning. ❤❤
Thanks John, laburnum never lets you down 😀
Ohh that grain!!! Sooo beautiful Mike 👏👏👏
Thanks Louis, laburnum has never let me down 😀

A fantastic result Mike. Thankyou for your insights. Hearing your thoughts as you work helps us understand the designing as you work. Cheers Deno.

As always, beautiful work. Really like this one.
Thank you so much Wes 😀
Wow, yet another super interesting piece! It does have a feminine shape and makes me think of old Hollywood glamor gowns. As usual, well done!
Haha thanks! I know exactly what you mean and I said this to my wife, it looks to me like a shot of Marilyn Monroe in a gown 😀
Hi Mike that was a really lovely piece you made I love the look of the grain. I really enjoy watching your videos I find them very relaxing.
Thank you very much Jon, all the best, Mike 😃

Beautiful form and wood grain.

No problem Rob and thanks for watching 😀
Beautiful work. Love the rim.
Thank you very much, I did have a few problems finding the shape but very happy with how it ended up 😀
What a beautiful vase!!
Thanks! 😀
Never heard of laburnum, but sure is pretty. Love woods with lots of grain character.
Thanks Roger, it is very common in Europe, not sure where you are but I know it is hard to find in America, all the best, Mike 😀
Yes you are allowed to say that, lol. It’s a very sexy shape and absolutely stunning piece, that wood is quite something! Thank you for filming, sharing the process and the final piece of art.
Thanks so much for saying that, I love your user name buy the way, I imagine you as being a superhero, flying around and saving people 😀
@@MikeHolton this ol’ gray mare doesn’t do too much flying these days but I do value Truth and Justice.. and beautifully, lovingly created art. Such as yours. I come from a long line of woodworkers-wheelwrights coming across the American plains. And some in our family still do woodworking in one capacity or another. I’ve done some myself. A great grandfather made violins. Another made inlaid boxes. More recent times - homes, custom cabinets and even a beautiful electric guitar. All flatwork tho, not turning. Wood is a beautiful, versatile medium. I
@@flyingeaglewoman8682 That is quite a beautiful family picture, I come from farmers and steelworkers, not many working with wood that I know of and I did come to this very late. I have only been turning for three years but so glad I started, is has allowed me to get out all the creativeness I have had inside for years.
@@MikeHolton the epoxy/wood combo opens up new avenues for creativity too. I visited your website and saw this wood turning is new for you. Seems you picked right up on this form of creating art. Beautiful pieces! Our ancestors were quite productive- growing food, steel work and getting families across vast barren plains. In different places on our beautiful world, nevertheless..
@flyingeaglewoman8682 So true 😀
Another beautiful vase
Thanks Sam 😀
That vase is beautiful!!
I think so too! 😃
Lovely finish and inspired me with a log that’s been sitting in the shed 👍👍

Stunning grain pattern!
Thanks, Laburnum is always beautiful 😀
I love hearing your thoughts as you work out a design for your pieces, and laburnum is a really spectacular wood. I love the final shape you went with very beautiful as always
Thank you very much Rena, took some finding but so glad we got there 😀
There is a lot of flow in that piece 🤗
Thanks, I think so too 😀
What a stunning vase! Great video as always. My grandparents had a large laburnum tree, I remember as a child being constantly reminded not to pick up the seeds. I didn't know the wood is toxic as well.
It's not as bad as the seeds but you still need to be careful. Thanks, Mike
Absolutely beautiful vase ❤
Thanks so much Karen 😀
Love this Vase! You are amazing!
Wow, thanks Matt, I must tell my wife 😀
Nice work! I think you made a great choice for the design. Take care and GOD BLESS 🙏🏻!

Thank you so much 😀
Hi Mike, I am glad you enjoyed it as much as I did! When you first explained your design thinking, I must admit I couldn't picture it, but the 'jaunty angle' of the rim, and the missing piece really adds to the final shape (.. if a missing piece can add to ...well, you get my meaning!)🤔
Haha thanks David, a missing piece can certainly add something, wow that does sound strange 😂
Every inch of this wood has beautiful grain texture. And LOVE the shape and angle of the top rim! Another gem, Mr. Horton!
Thanks so much Charmain, all the best, Mike 😀
