    I would have made the parting tool narrower than the copper band. The act of cutting will make the groove wider. Then friction fit the copper band...
    Or... double up the copper banding for a slightly wider copper inlay!?

    The vase looks terrific. Well done as usual. I do like the wood and the copper, nice complimentary colours.
    Looks like the pictures of iroko I have seen, although I do not have any in my shop. The colour is lighter than the sapele and mahogany I have in my shop.
    Good call to grind a tool to get the narrower groove. Metalworking HSS tool bits e.g., 1/8in x 1/8in x 2 1/2in can be glued into a piece of mild steel bar then ground for various custom tools. These tool bits are inexpensive.
    FYI copper is soft - when annealed, but it quickly work hardens when turned. So the initial amount you removed would have been easy, but then the later depth may have work hardened, so not so easy to remove. When machinist needs to machine copper they either remove the depth in one cut or they may have to remove the work to re-anneal.
    My local turning club likes Starbond coloured CA glue brand. My nephew is returning in Sept if you want me to send some back with him. Just let me know the desired brand and thin, vs med vs thick.
    Dave.

    • @MikeHolton
      @MikeHolton  Рік тому

      Hi Dave, the copper was a lot harder to turn back than I expected but did not give me any real problems. I will have a go at turning a drill bit into a cutting tool, I also have some spring steel which may work.
      Starbond is a fortune over here, how much is it there? Quite happy to send over funds for a batch.
      Thanks as ever, talk soon.
      Mike

    • @lv_woodturner3899
      @lv_woodturner3899 Рік тому

      Starbond site shows 1oz $11.50 and 2oz $16.50.
      I would not use a drill bit as a turning tool. Only the fluted section is hardened and the spiral flute shape is normally not what you want. The non-fluted section is not hardened, good steel but not hardened.
      If you want a cheap source of a turning tool you may have in your shop, consider making one from an allen key which is hardened the entire length.
      Dave.

    Mike, I was wondering if you have a problem with dust getting between the headstock and bed ways after you move headstock. Apparently even a tiny amount can upset the lathe centre between tail and headstock.
    This could have been what caused the little wobble in end of vase. Cleaning bedwaysbefore and after moving headstock helps. I’ve seen a UA-cam tutorial on this, sorry can’t remember where or name of it but it I can be serious to proper headstock alignment.

    Where did you get the copper inlay from, I use electrical wire copper and twist 2 wires together, have to be careful with sanding though. Don’t sand too much away.
    This gives a lovely look.

    The black and copper worked well. Would the grain have responded to being burnt then the gold, or is it the wrong sort of wood for that?

    something for you to try, I use this idea for large pieces, it is expensive, I bought a ARBORTECH TURBOPlane Blade 4Inch/100mm Carbide Woodworking Disc Angle Grinder Attachment | IND.FG.400.20, (amazon), attached to an angle grinder, I use a HF, I put the large log in my lathe using a grip type center in the HS, and a spinner bearing in the TS, using a low speed and the turboplane, I can knock down and round the corners in short order, then use my carbide lathe tools, a word of caution to you and other readers, this will throw chips all over the place, make SURE you USE good eye protection. tape your sleeves and have a closed neck collar, and grip the angle grinder securely.

      you might ask turbo plane if they would send you a unit to feature on your channel? maybe you could borrow one from a friend, I am telling you, HANG on to the angle grinder, the turbo plane tends to grab into the wood... just want to be safe using tools, for you and others

    I have talked about brazing to other UA-camrs and it seems to be something that nobody wants to mess with I like projects like this but it always bothers me just a little to see a break in something like that copper ring. Brazing is not that difficult much easier than welding but only a tad harder than using silver solder but they sell brazing rods that have flux caked on the outside of them and that makes it easier than it ever was before I have some and love it when I get to mess with them. What are your thoughts on brazing rods? You are not afraid of them are you? I do like the end result of this piece glad it turned out! Hyuk hyuk sorry my dad jokes are always horrible...

    Regarding sanding deep vases, have a look at this guy's method. Very simple but very effective: Sandpaper on a foam pad around a simple scrap piece of wood: ua-cam.com/video/JBPxBxztop0/v-deo.html
