    Finally, a video that clearly explains why I feel pain while maintaining a forward bend. I have been practicing and it helps tremendously! However, I still have issues maintaining my posture when I must bend further down. For example, while changing a bed ridden patient, I must pull the patient towards me which often requires a forward bend at almost a 90 degree or more depending on how high I can raise the bed but also requires me to hyperextend my back to be able to reach over the patient causing my heels to lift up and I end up on my toes all while trying to maintain upper body strength and no matter how hard I try to maintain my posture I end up curving my back because it’s the only way I can get enough strength and stability to hold the patient in a lateral position with one hand while using the other hand to place items underneath the patient. Or, another example, is when I am performing tracheostomy care and I have to maintain 45 degree tilt or more while hyperextending my back and twisting slightly to one side to be able to reach the patients neck area across the bed. I find that also very painful to hold that position. I will keep trying to bend from the hips but I tend to default to curving my back in these types of situations even though it hurts because I feel like I have more control and upper body strength. It sometimes feels like my legs are longer than my upper body I just can’t find the right position to maintain proper posture. I just can’t find a way to do it that doesn’t kill my back. I hope I made some sense. It’s the best way I can describe it. Do I need to strengthen certain upper body muscles to help with this? Do I need to stretch? What advice would you give in these situations? It would be great if you did a video on this. Thank you

    Hello Sam. Your video has been useful.I am glad that I don't have to lean anymore to use the vacuum cleaner because I have a robot vacuum cleaner named Rumba. :).I will share your video to my family and friends.Some of them have problems maintaining a good posture of the spine and suffer from back pain. I suffered from kiphosis, but did pshysiotherapy and got rid of it. I have been careful regarding my spine since I had that problem. I will keep in mind the posture for brushing the teeth by bending the knees! :)Thank you for sharing it!

    I recognise that posture from my having to assume it during ''housework" in my house, etc.
    I am reminded of the ''weak'' knees, that mean I cannot hold that position for too long; normally anything where I have to bend to that level I get a portable short stool (40cm high) and place it next to where I must ''bend", eg. very low shelves in the closet.
    .
    When I clean the bath tub, I have to lean into it and do so with my knees bent and pressed into the outside edge of the bath tub; not good posture.
    I can only do that for a brief cleaning session, so I use a powerful cleaner, AJAX. !
    .
    Nice presentation.
    Your microphone is in a good position.
    Many such videos, use their built-in laptop microphone, which gives much room-echo; glad that I can hear you clearly.
    .
    I was about to give up with the body but I realise I must continue trying to be a flexible person.

    Hi Sam, Thanks for sending the link to your video. I enjoyed watching it. Your explanations are clear and helpful. As a Feldenkrais practitioner I work with many people who have difficulties with forward bending and I'm always looking for useful tools for learning--I'm going to try using the stick with some of my clients as it looks like it gives great biofeedback.

    • @YoureAbsolutelyRight
      @YoureAbsolutelyRight 10 років тому

      Note, Sandra: the stick is a patented technique and royaties will be payable !

    • @SandraBradshaw
      @SandraBradshaw 10 років тому

      You've got to be joking! I guess I won't be using your strategies with my clients although I'm not really sure how you can patent a stick and/or regulate it's use.

    Thank you for this tip. I have an acute pain in my right hip joint. I was told by a chiropractor that my right leg is shorter than my left. Do you treat that type if condition or whom I should seek for further check. Than you

    • @SamVisnic
      @SamVisnic  10 років тому

      The only way to truly determine leg length is via a very particular kind of x-ray. You should know that most of the time, this "apparent" leg length measurement by itself is not important, but may be valuable in the overall big picture.

    The stretching sensation is behind the knees. Actually feels as if it's perhaps more upper calf than hamstring.

    • @SamVisnic
      @SamVisnic  10 років тому

      This is a common perception although its not always clear what is being stretched. Nerve tension can also be perceived as a "stretch" in the muscles.

  • @dexistence19

    Sam, when doing this, I feel a huge stretch on the hamstrings, even when bending forward only slightly. Would hamstring stretches improve the depth to which I can bend?

    • @SamVisnic
      @SamVisnic  10 років тому

      Doing this IS stretching the hamstrings. Thats part of the magic. :)

    While i understand the right way to bend is from the hips but then doesn't it cause stress to the knees?

    • @SamVisnic
      @SamVisnic  10 років тому

      Definitely not. If squatting was "bad for the knees" as some people claim, how would you get on and off the toilet or in/out of a car? Completely normal movement.

    So let me get this straight... You want me to stick a pole up my ass while bending over in order to relieve this lower back pain???? I'm good on that. I'll just use a wall or something. I'm about to go look up some yoga techniques or something.

    • @brahmoone

      I believe the pole should have a U section on the bottom you can stick it in your ass with better confidence and experience
