Incredible route with incredible scenes. Relatively few get to experience the wonder of such a vantage point, especially since there aren't that many passenger trains on most routes anymore. That was amazing.
Roy Whitaker, what a guy! Knew him from the Eastbay club. Always a good time at the Napa club on New Years eve running model trains. What stories he had from the railroad. Miss him, all though talk about him several times a year. Tim Hanesworth
I have a "Sarge" story. I made an engineer training trip with Sarge and when we climbed up on the inbound power in Fresno he saw that the windshield was filthy from diesel exhaust, which was definitely one of his pet peeves. We had to pull West right away to clear the SP Calwa Crossing. We stopped behind the next crossing to wait for the lineup and I volunteered to clean the windshield with hand soap and paper towels. He was so pleased with the result that he looked at me and said these EXACT words: "I'm gonna have to show you some SPECIAL stuff." And he did. He showed how to use train air and dynamic brakes together to slow down for a 40 mph siding switch with NO slack action, among other tricks of the trade. We were friends 'till the end. Thanks for the comment.
To the right, I was born and raised in that house at 5:44. Yes, 30 years ago, it didn’t have any trees. Mormon Yard have changed. There used to be track next to the mainline to the right. In fact, the cars at 5:56 are for the old pickup track of the Central California Traction Company. The CCT at Port of Stockton is recent. Thank you for posting.
You probably heard the roaring dynamics of a lot of westbound trains making a stop at the yard office to change crews or make a set-out. In later years the set-outs were made in Riverbank. Thanks for the comment.
vidwilzvids, grew up with it. When the -8’s came out in 1988, it was weird!! They didn’t change crews until the merger with BN. (I go far back!!!) I been in Stockton Tower and worked as a conductor for Amtrak. Hell, I remember WP SW-9’s pulling in BN or WP interchange with sparks flowing out the stacks. Yes, I saw many changes. My mother and brother still lives there. Our house been there since 1968.
The merger provided trackage rights up to Keddie and created a new crew district out of Stockton. That also created the "Long Pool", Stockton to Bakersfield, which I worked until I retired. Maybe you knew Pete, who worked the tower a lot of years.
I dont mean to be so offtopic but does any of you know a method to get back into an Instagram account..? I was stupid forgot my account password. I love any tips you can give me!
@Zeke Benson Thanks for your reply. I found the site through google and I'm waiting for the hacking stuff now. Looks like it's gonna take quite some time so I will get back to you later with my results.
The crews adopted the name "Mariposa" as the facility was being built at Mariposa Rd. Then it became Mariposa Yard when it was up and running. When it was busy and you had to wait to get in or out it was called "Malfunction Junction".
For me everyday at work was a thrill to be in the engine of a moving train and I did the work as a conductor. The being on call was not for me. You don't know till you try it. It ain't for everybody.
It's definitely a lifestyle that not everyone can adjust to. New hires have to learn how to adjust to it immediately. Many bail before they become dependent on the income.
I used to work an engineer or brakeman job on roadswitchers or locals (when I could hold it) just to take a break from the road. It was nice going home every night. Thanks for the comment.
Fantastic footage. Love the scenery. With just the sounds of the train and tracks. It’s very soothing and relaxing to watch 😊

Thank You for the great trip down memory lane…..Stockton tower area sure has changed since I rambled around in 70’s. (WP,SP,SF)

Hi Tim - CVL Rules! Many years ago, in a far away land... good times up there.
Awesome video. Love the deep bass chug of the 16 cyl. GE
4-stroke FDL's and 2-stroke super-charged 567's... music. Thanks for the comment.

vidwilzvids, Pete Peterson, James Werla, Richard Baker, Tad Yoshimura, Herbie Wendlend, Mel Cabrera. Yep...
Born and raised at Mormon Yard.
@@oldclip70 You knew them all. Pete was the character. He also worked the bridge at Orwood and was an itinerant asst. train master (ATM).
The Good Ole' Brown Spot! that was a fun job to work with the right crew!
loved this...especially enjoyed seeing the 'catfish' (NS) at around 17:17...pls keep these coming!

You're very welcome. Thanks for the comment.
I thought Mariposa was on Hwy 140 on the way to Yosemite up in the foothill country. At 3:50. So, you meant Mariposa Road?

The B40-8W's were a rough, miserable ride. Thanks for the comment.

Were you employed by BNSF at one point, or just managed to get a cab ride? Nice grab either way.
I used to work an engineer or brakeman job on roadswitchers or locals (when I could hold it) just to take a break from the road. It was nice going home every night. Thanks for the comment.
too bad this job doesn’t exist anymore. you still with the bnsf?
Retired.

I understand CCT now has gensets.
Not in Stockton
@@kdwomack75 yes, they do. 3 gensets, 2 of them are switchers that work in the port.
Some narration would be nice.
