I own a diesel shop Bill and your knowledge of the 6.0 is the best that I've seen. You've helped me in some pretty tough situations. My bulletproofing is reliable like yours! I use genuine Ford oem parts along with Archoil! Thanks Bill!

+Bobby John Good luck with that, every machine has it's issues - the key is knowledge, patience, and have the right tools! The 7.3 powerstroke is a good engine for people that that like to work on their own stuff. Not too complicated and somewhat accessible under the hood compared to the later diesels in Ford trucks. 99-02 Super Duty is the only way to go IMO!

You're comment is irrelevant, every make and model has it's pros and cons... Bill specializes in Powerstroke diesels, that and that only. His videos are designed to inform Powerstroke owners and someone looking to purchase a Ford Powerstroke. If you want to buy a Cummins or a Duramax, then go do that, no need to post your negativity on this video. Grow the fuck up and buy what you want to buy, regardless of what a UA-cam video tells you is best, obviously you have it all figured our anyway.

Oh yes genius , the newest ford diesel disaster with the new and "redesigned" engine. Are you even aware of just one of the small problems, it's bending connecting rods. Do you know what a connecting rod is? Ford took a great 7.3 International engine and basically destroyed it. There will always be ignorant / non aware people like you who buy into Ford's advertising buy buy these trucks.

I had 2 6.0s. 1 in a 06 f550 and 1 in a 03 f350. Both had issues when I got them and I fixed both and resold them. I now have a f450 that was a 6.0 truck that blew up a lifter. I got it dirt cheap and decided to go the cummins route instead of a rebuild. Every once in awhile I wish I'd have just built a bulletproof 6.0. I know how to work on and diagnose them and 7.3's. This commonrail cummins is a whole different beast.

Peace of mind is worth waiting a week or two than getting right now whatever [parts store] computer says will fit. I'd like to thank all mechanics and shops that do third-party installations. You're the best.

Let me start out by saying that I do not have a dog in this fight - I own a Toyota Tundra which is light years ahead of anything Ford could dream of despite the fact that my towing / pulling capacity is roughly half that of one of these (wanted to point that out because I know that will be one of the first replies). I watch Bill's videos because I am impressed by the comprehensive coverage and detailed explanation of findings.
With all of this said, it should be pointed out (as a few others already have) that poor quality Ford OEM parts are the root of the great majority of the failures these trucks encounter (head gaskets, oil pan gaskets, HPFP, broken glow plugs, cracked valves, blown turbos, among other known weak points). Yet, in most of Bill's videos, he is heard saying to "always use Ford parts." Really???? Basically, it sounds like parts with a known history of failure are being replaced with the SAME junk parts. I really *want* to like diesels in general, as their pulling power is quite impressive. However, if OEM parts are as good as it gets, I will continue to avoid these trucks like the plague

Not Ford engines. 6.7 is the first Ford designed Powerstroke. But when you get a Ford/Motorcraft part for any of the Ford diesels it’ll be updated. Remember that Ford doesn’t make parts, but their vendors do. Same thing with International-Navistar who made the 6.9, 7.3, 6.0, and 6.4.

You're at the mercy of Ford Motor Company how long they want to supply genuine repair parts for these extremely complicated vehicles years down the road.
In my experience, Ford and Chrysler abandon parts support in a scary short time once a vehicle is out of production. GM is quite a bit better at parts support on older vehicles.
Scrounging used parts or aftermarket parts will be your only option sooner than you think on these overly complicated pieces of crap.

    • @andrewb9708
      @andrewb9708 8 років тому +1

+scdevon Not exactly. International VT365 parts are interchangeable, for the most part, with the 6.0 Powerstroke. There are plenty of 6.0's and VT365's on the road, I'm not worried about parts availability anytime soon.

All of the mfgs (Ford, Chevy, Dodge, Nissan, Toyota, Porsche....) have a few application specific, patented, highperformance, special compound (Poly-Urethane, Buna-Nitrile, silicone, rubber or even proprietary paper...) gaskets and outher sealing o-rings etc. The design engineers come up with some really high tech, quality stuff. If you just grab something off of the self that "looks" similar or "like" it will "work"... you are probably in for a short duration fix. Even the after market stuff may "look" like the OEM replacement, but you'll be "rolling the dice" . If it is something that requires a lot of labor and downtime to fix: use good STOCK parts (or PROVEN Aftermarket substitute). The Factory/OEM stuff may be really expensive, but it is the right stuff and worth the extra expense!!

Removed the CCV breather located on top of the left valve cover to replace the seals. There was an oil slick on the valve cover.I found the rear seal (Looks like an O ring.) swelled to an oval shape. Bought new OEM seals and reinstalled. Ten months latter same problem. Those OEM O rings are a lousy design. This time I bought two 1-1/4 ID flat slip joint plumbing washers 3/16 thick and used them. Cost 79 cents each vs $15 for the OEM. Reuse the machine screw seals or put dab on of silicon.

+heavymechanic2 On the Powerstrokes, that is true. I am a mechanic by trade, owning a shop. I put nothing but FoMoCo parts on these trucks. Simple sensors fail or do not work at all when they are not Ford genuine. I installed a simple cam sensor from Napa on my PS, and it skipped worse than the old part. Put a new Ford sensor on it, worked like a charm. Keep an extra in the toolbox now, as it is a common failure. Makes perfect sense to have to do that, right?

+Steve Tune Up Plus it's true with all ford cars and trucks they really like running fomoco parts from the dealer in them I have a 2007 for 500 sedan and if you replace the plugs with Bosch or a utility you'll be doing them every 6 or 7thousand miles because if the high performance ignition for out on these cars. I would develope a miss about every 5 k and when I finally had enough of taking the intake off to get to the back three plugs and coils I spent the money bought Motorcraft plugs and coils and haven't had a mis or any kind of ignition problem since and that was close to 100k miles ago. simply put if you have a ford buy ford parts you'll be better off and won't be chasing problems caused by aftermarket

Reading reviews online of specific parts is now very important-even if its a company like bosch. Since the economy has changed so drastically in the past several years so have parts manufactures changed their quality control of parts. Its gotten BAD!
Also, ALWAYS compare parts when replacing-side by side comparison-as the video demonstrated, parts people are humans AND mistakes WILL happen.

    Is that gasket a Fel-Pro?
I once had to install one on a Ford Modular 4.6, and the Fel-Pro valve cover gasket wouldn't stay in the groove of the valve cover. The way I installed it was to press it on the valve cover gasket, move the valve cover into place immediately, then hope that the gasket didn't pop out of place.
This surprised me. Fel-Pro made gaskets for GM V6 engines that had really bad intake manifold gaskets from the factory.

I don't know why people always try to skimp on stupid little stuff like this. You pay umpteen thousand dollars for a truck, and then put on a $40 aftermarket sensor. The OE one is like $100-110. If you have to pinch pennies that much you probably need to reevaluate your priorities with regard to a machine that needs maintenance like that from time to time.
I've learned that lesson with my 25 year old Mercedes. After trying all different aftermarket brands, the only stuff that actually works and lasts is OEM. If you pay for crap it's going to run like crap.

  • @whesselton

Bill Hewitt loves to hear himself talk. This entire video is stupid. He says at the beginning that the customer put the wrong ICP sensor in the damn thing. How does that make all aftermarket parts wrong. Should I not use anything from Alliant Power and use only Ford/Motorcraft? I think I'll save a buck and go with Alliant Power or International, you know...the company that actually made these engines for Ford. I'll just be sure to use the correct part for whatever needs to be replaced.
On a side note, you 7.3 guys will definitely remember this one. Remember years back when the CAM sensors would just leave you stranded on the side of the road? So, we all started to carry them in our glove boxes just in case it happened again. Then finally, I don't remember how long it was that Ford finally came out with the updated CAM sensors (the gray ones) that actually worked. Well, after my first Ford CAM sensor went bad and before the new and improved one came out from Ford, Alliant Power had already figured out the problem (before Ford) and I replaced mine with their updated version and have never had an issue since 52,000 mi CAM sensor failure - 340,000 mi. CAM sensor from Alliant Power still ticking.
Not bad, huh? Oh, and Bill... I never use Archoil or any other additives.
