    Karina you have really outdone yourself with this one. it takes a level of expertise to make a masterclass for elastic waistbands and not have the content sound like bullshit. I really learned a lot. GIRL... YOU DID THAT!!! BRAVO!!!

    Thank you for adding so much joy in my day! Your videos are brilliantly executed and thoughtful; considering all that one might run into while following along. I am finishing the crescendo jeans and I did not think they would be wearable on the first pass. Thanks to you they fit perfectly and I feel great in them.

    Question: What stitch length do you use when topstitching the elastic waistbands? Does a longer stitch length prevent some of the stretching? Thank you so much for your excellent instructional videos. I've learned so much from you. And I look forward to your bright sunny attitude! You're such a breath of fresh air! Thank you, again, Karina.

      @@lilagaddis I use 3.0 and no, it does not prevent the stretching because you are already stretching the elastic manually to its max when sewing.

    Very helpful! Thank you! I especially appreciated you describing your stitch lengths for the zigzags! Also showing all the detailed processes for us "newbies" who don't naturally know what all the steps are for and WHY! So important for a video that is meant to teach their audience! Bravo! I subscribed to your channel for that reason!

    Nice video. I have a question for you about elastic. I am in search of good quality elastic. I use most of the technics that you demonstrate however, lately I find that the elastic is not of good quality and by the time I complete the elasticated waistband it is too big. It appears that the extra stitching to stop the elastic from rolling stretches the elastic out of shape. Would be nice to know your thoughts.

    • @LiftingPinsandNeedles
      @LiftingPinsandNeedles  6 місяців тому

      Yes, top stitching does make it end up larger than the original length. If I know I’ll be topstitching, I’ll make it 4” smaller than my waist.

    I have no waist to speak of and I find my most comfortable and best fitting on my body is a cut-on waist band which has ejastic attached before folding to the inside and securing jwith a few stitches at the seams.

    • @LiftingPinsandNeedles
      @LiftingPinsandNeedles  4 місяці тому

      I know lots of people like that. I personally don’t like sewing the edge of the fabric to the elastic because that bulk rubs on my skin and I find it terribly uncomfortable.

    Thank you for such clear examples - If I go to make something I always look to see if you have a video on it. Your instructions and your sewing techniques are so detailed and professional looking at the end. Your videos are so appreciated especially as I live in a region in Australia and we do not have any sewing groups or classes so I have no one to ask or any shop with sewing classes.

    Is there an preference on the type of elastic used when doing the topstitching?

    • @LiftingPinsandNeedles
      @LiftingPinsandNeedles  6 місяців тому

      Usually the ones that roll, twist and turn inside. There are sturdier non roll elastics that don’t need it.

    Really nice looking jeans Karina! With respect to your elastic waistband techniques, I noticed that you did not include the simplest one of all-- the extended garment and then just rolling it under and stitching and I wondered why? I don't think it is more bulky, but perhaps because you don't need a separate piece? I'd be curious as to your answer.

    • @LiftingPinsandNeedles
      @LiftingPinsandNeedles  6 місяців тому

      Because what you are describing is not a separate waistband and that was the goal of this video. What you describe involves the pattern maker making the rise longer, changing the shape on the top. It’s not as simple as doing that on any garment because the waistband is included in the total rise of pants/shorts and even the placement of the waist in a skirt.

    I did a waist band today like the red fabric example, making the Pattern Emporium swing shorts. It worked well but find your preferred method easier 😊

    • @LiftingPinsandNeedles
      @LiftingPinsandNeedles  6 місяців тому

      Yep, Pattern emporium usually has the waistbands done with that method but I’ve seen it on other brands too :)

  • @marathorne6821

    I never guessed there were so many methods for sewing an elasticated waistband! I prefer to have the edges inside the waistband rather than outside at the bottom. If I do it that way for any reason, I tend to do a line of edge stitching just below the waistband to keep it pointing down. As with all sewing techniques, I guess it's a case of personal preference. I loved it when you said "sewing is supposed to be enjoyable so do what makes you happy" - amen to that! 😊

    • @LiftingPinsandNeedles

      The best thing about sewing are the options. So many ways to do things and it should be fun :)

    Enjoyed watching the Master Class on Elastication. The No. 4 technique is the one I started sewing with and it’s the only one that I use. Must be old age - hate change. Thank you for the compilation.

    • @LiftingPinsandNeedles

      I love that one for heavier fabrics and use it a lot. It all depends on the fabric in the end. I also like sticking with what works and is enjoyable.

      Stretching the elastic under the waistband was super fiddly…. The footage is a snippet, it took ages. The second stage of folding it over also took longer than a waistband should.

    This is just perfect, I’m in the middle of some self drafted pants to which I’m adding an elastic waistband. I agree with your assessment. I also have made a band where the waistband was incorporated into the rise of the pants then did the sewn/folded version which was very easy for a simple pant.

    45:52 This is a very helpful video, Karina.
    1. I’d like to see tips for inserting elastic in back waistband only.
    2. Have you seen the instructions for the Style Falcon Straight A’s Skirt? It has a yoke and hidden elastic waist where the elastic is sewn between the yoke facing seam allowances. A bit fiddly but looks great! The yoke seam pockets are a nice feature, too. I’d love to see your review of this skirt.
