The maple insert would have been a nice addition, BUT doing what you did made for one BEAUTIFUL bowl. Walnut is beautiful anyway, but you have elevated this piece to a whole new level. Gorgeous turning Gary!
Thank you Doug. The maple strip was an option. Only to not lose any diameter. I could not break up the flow of the grain in this one. So after jointing the edge and looked at the match there was no question. On a very straight grained piece of walnut yes it would work. I was thinking about you as I glued it together. Was pretty sure you would like it. Merry Christmas my friend. Gary
That was a perfect rescue of that bowl blank! The result is absolutely gorgeous! I sometime think English walnut if nicer that black walnut, well done and thanks! Cheers Al
Thank you Irsael. I go off the grain and reflection it has. On a real open grain I probably would not use lacquer. I may use a poly on that. This piece was perfect for lacquer. Thanks for watching, Gary
THIS is why I love walnut, Great save! I'm not opposed to splicing different woods together... the results can be very beautiful. In this case, with the grain so closely matched from just removing a chainsaw kerf, I really think that you made the right choice.
You definitely made the right decision not putting that Maple into the piece. It turned out better than perfect...I love it and wish I had a piece of wood like it!!....well done 👍😊
Thanks so much Ralph. For sure I was not going to put the maple or any other wood in there just to keep it 1/2 inch wider. Some who did not know the story would be wondering why in heck did I cut a piece just to put a strip of maple in it. This wood speaks for itself and speaks pretty loud at that. Now to look for the other pieces I saved after cutting up the stump. Thanks for watching, Gary
Hi 👋, I hope you are keeping safe and well, Great looking 👀 English Walnut Bowl, perfect joint, I wish you all a Merry Christmas and a prosperous and happy New Year, Phil from the moulin France ,
Half a dozen times during this video you made decisions and I thought, "well, that's what I would have done too." And THAT means that I've learned a LOT from watching your videos. Thank you so much for all your work and all you share!!!
I think you made the right choice and I CANNOT see that glue joint! Really pleasing design on this one. Maybe not as deep as you wanted but plenty deep enough for a fruit bowl or just as a piece of art. Beautiful finish as always, Gary! You've really got that down pat. This was an entertaining video, buddy, keep'em coming! 😀 Phil
Thanks Phil, this was a piece I looked at 100 times. Finally brought it inside and the solution was right there. I guess you just need to get them closer to a lathe. Thanks for watching my friend, Gary
When you first asked about the maple accent I thought it would look good. Now that it is finished you absolutely made the right decision. That is one beautiful bowl!
A stunning piece Gary , I've been a carpenter for 52 years and have seen some amazing timbers but walnut is the best , this earth has given us some beautiful natural pieces 😊❤
Thanks so much Ian. Being a wood pattermaker we used Sugar Pine and African Mahogany. I hated having to paint the finished patterns with either Red, Black or Yellow lacquer. Yes we are blessed with beauty in nature. Gary
That sir is a great job! Also a wonderful job with explaining your thoughts and the technical aspects of what you were doing. I look forward to seeing more from you. Thanks again.
Hi Gary... Definitely the right choice... Stunningly beautiful piece of Walnut.. Lovely simple design.. very well executed... Take care my friend...All the best.....Andy
Thank you Andy. I think it was the only choice. It would be like adding yellow mustard on a piece of chocolate pie. Well maybe not LOL. Take care my friend, Gary
Love what you did by regluing the blank. Just too nice to do anything else. I usually follow the maxim, "when the wood deserves it, make it the star". Thanks, John Stough
Thank you John. It would have been a shame to put something else in the joint. Like you said the Walnut was the star of this show. Thanks for watching, gary
Thank you Gord. For the longest time I was so saddened to see that chain saw cut. Sure happy I let it sit this long. That was the first time it came into the shop. I think we can get better ideas when it is in the shop instead of looking at it while it is cold and rainy LOL. Take care my friend, Gary
That grain is magnificent and the shape is perfect. What a beauty! I can almost see the form of a tree in the basin of the bowl, with the trunk in the middle and the flaring out below and above - roots and canopy.
Thank you Carol. I am sure you understand the feelings I had while that beautiful grain appeared for a scrappy looking piece of wood. It was WOW! Thanks for watching, Gary
Another beautiful piece Gary. You made the right choice (in my opinion) in leaving it all walnut. The grain is certainly spectacular! Well done!! Ted M
I love it the way it is. You did a fantastic job covering up that joint. Smaller pieces would have been just a beautiful. But bigger is always better. Beautifully done! 👍👏
Thank you Dean. I never even tried a piece there to see how it looked. This will be nice on the Christmas table coming up soon. Thanks for watching, Gary
Gorgeous! The fix turned out so well, is invisible at least on screen. The grain is fantastic, and while a maple inlay may have have been attractive, I think the straight glue-up was the better choice!
Thanks so much Susan. I really do not think the maple was an option for me but I tossed it out there. I as pretty sure the glue joint would blend so well it would not be seen. So in a case where the glue joint stood out like a sore foot then the maple would be a good choice. Thanks for watching, Gary
Great choice to glue two halves together. I think the bowl turned out fabulous. Looks like there may be a little chatoyance in the wood aside from the great figure. Maybe name the piece The Chainsaw Bowl. I think using a maple inclusion would have turned the bowl into the Chainsaw Massacre.😂 Nice one, Gary!
Thanks John. The joint did match perfect because of the grain. I think the maple strip would have named it The Maple Massacre LOL, Only reason to do that is not loose any diameter Happy you liked it and thanks for watching, Gary
Thank You Gary... Walnut is always WONDERFUL!!! I use to have a huge Japanese Black Walnut in my backyard. I was able to save some of the wood for block planes but I regret to say most of the heart wood was lost due to my young age, ability & knowledge to keep/store the majority of that beautiful tree.... The glue joint worked out perfectly fine but a strip of Maple would have been equally fine with a different look. Just beautiful .... TM
Thank you very much. Back in 1962 we had a big storm called the Columbus Day Storm For obvious reasons. So many trees went down and I was only 15 so getting any of that wood sure was not on my mind. I am sure most became firewood. Thanks for watching, Gary
That is one beautiful bowl! Walnut is such a treat to turn as it is hard to come by. You made an absolute perfect decision in cutting and glueing it together. You can't tell it was glued. It is an amazing piece. Thank you for sharing your turning expertise with us, it is appreciated more than you could imagine. Glenn
Hi Gary. I have been away from my lathe for 6 months due to a move and all my tools have been in storage. Putting my shop back together and probably about 2 weeks away from being back on the tools. Decided to crank up the laptop for some videos and there you were - my favourite turner awesome as always. Hope to get my turning hands back in shape as I am sure that I am very rusty, Thanks for still being there - your video has got me re-inspired to get back at it. Regards Dennis
I have an apple rootball like that: I'm just not sure how to make a turnable whatszit blank because the rootball hasn't told me what whatszit it wants to be. (got my fingers in a knot with that one 😉)
I would like to hit the like button but I can’t do that cause I don’t like it. I love that bowl that is absolutely beautiful. I think you made the right choice by cutting and just gluing it together
Gary it was definitely the right decisions to cut the chain saw line and glue, you really dont see the line. what a great job and a lovely bowl appeared out of that with your expert tuning of course. Great job well done.
Thanks so much Alan. I could not be happier with it. I knew the grain was nice but as I turned it away I was unbelievable . Sad that many pieces like this get burned. Take care, Gary
Gary, you are the hidden glue joint specialist. It looks lovely. My favourite part, as always, is at 10 minutes when the first coat of sealer goes on. Compliments of the season to you and yours and here’s hoping for a healthy an successful 2024 🌞
Thanks so much Ray That glue joint was very kind to me for sure. For sure the finish going on is my favorite. A very happy holiday season to you my friend, Gary
Good afternoon, Gary. Well, when you mentioned putting a piece of maple between the two pieces, I thought absolutely. When you revealed your choice, I said ok let's see how it turns out. The joint cannot be seen, perfect. You made the right choice. Gorgeous. Merry Christmas to you and all service members away from home.
Thank you very much Ray. So after I jointed the halves and put them together the choices was very easy. Merry Christmas to you as well. All all those serving so far away from home. We know how strange that feels. Take care, Gary
Thank you Al. I think it was a very slim chance that I put the maple in it. The fact the grain matched so well was the icing on the cake. Thanks for watching, Gary
Good call, Gary! I thought I saw the joint at one point (time for a rhyme). But it's almost invisible. Yup! Beautiful grain. Can't beat walnut. I hope you and yours have a blessed Christmas!
Thanks so much. In looking over the grain where it was cut there was enough going on that I was sure it would be hard to see. It was better than that because I could not see it. Thanks for watching, Gary
Just wanted to say great info on how to use the square carbide. That's exactly how I use it to get a line on where to start flattening the top of such a large piece of wood. Happy turning my friend and that's going to help a lot of new Turner's out.
Thank you Edward. There is place for almost all tools in my shop. Someone suggested I could have used a parting tool. Yes but this had a lot of air to turn so the wider carbide did the trick. Thanks for watching, Gary
@ThePapa1947 don't get me wrong!!! I loved the video and the end result. But at one point your voice sounded like a chipmunk. I just really enjoy the whole process and I felt it was missing this time
Sorry about that. Right now I feel like an elephant stepped on me. Editing was a chore on this one. Yes there was one spot I did not edit the sound out. These videos would be 2 hours or more if we did not edit them. I will try and keep the chipmunk in his gage LOL
Another nice bowl. My first reaction to the chainsaw cut was "clean it with a router and glue in a very dark peice on one end golden wood on the other end to create opposing accents when turned"
Thanks Bill. That could be an option. To be the wonder grain pattern that was in this one deserved a chance to flow from one side to the other. And it worked perfectly. Had this been a more plain piece of wood I most likely would have put an accent piece in there. Thanks for watching, Gary
Hi Gary Amazing turning. Thanks for all your tuition this year, I am a better Turner thanks to your fantastic video's. Have a great Christmas to you and your family.
You definitely made the right choice. Adding a maple strip would have really adulterated the piece. Great salvage job and great piece. Merry Christmas.
Thank you so much Tom. i just mentioned on another comment that putting the maple on this piece would be like using yellow mustard for a topping on chocolate ice cream LOL. Merry Christmas my friend, Gary
Wow. That came out great. I saw those cracks, and it made me think of Jason (NW-Saywer) as he is always having bowls blLow up, but of course, he is just learning. I told him that he should talk to you for some pointers.
Thank you Tim. Not sure who he is. I will look it up. The wood was quite strong but I suppose a bad catch could blow it up. It was on the thinner side. Thanks for watching, Gary
Looks great Gary. I think the way you cut and rejoined it worked perfectly. On camera i could see where it was joined. Absolutely right choice. All the best wishes to you and family during this festive time and may you have a great year ahead. Thanks for all your content this past year and looking forward to seeing more of your skills in the New Year. Cheers Bruce
Many thanks Bruce. Happy you liked this one. Thank you for following my channel We are all getting together to have a Merry Christmas. Hopping for a good new year as well. All the best to you, Gary
Great job you have inspired me to do a similar idea with two odd chunks of black walnut that have been sitting staring at me to do something with them wonderful video as always, merry Christmas 🎄
I wasn’t sure about your choice at first, I’ve filled chainsaw cuts with epoxy in the past which has turned out very nice but that bowl when finished was magnificent and you can’t see the join at all. Great choice gary. It’s a pity you lost diameter and height whilst turning however, who cares when you see finished product. I was a little surprised to see you using carbide tools in your turning, you are such a traditionalist with your turning and could have easily used parting tools for same result. I really enjoy your videos gary. Keep them coming. The variety and techniques used are great.
Thank you very much Greg. I am sure the right color of epoxy could work. I only use carbide when it feels like the right place. My carbide tool is one I made the handle and bar for. Extra long and extra strong. On the uneven edge I felt it was the best to use. Especially with my left wrist bothering me. Thanks for watching, Gary
Hi Gary, Same as Phil for me I cannot see the glue joint. What a beautiful piece of Black Walnut and what a beautiful shallow bowl. Take care my friend and I hope you have as good a New Year as possible. Hwyl, Huw
Thanks Huw, it sure ended up being a very special wood for a less promising piece of would with that chain saw kerf. The New Year will be here soon. Wow this year sure went fast. Talk to you soon, Hwyl, Gary
Nicely done Gary the glue joint blends in perfectly I can’t see it at all, Very Beautiful piece and love to listen to the chisel cutting away as ya was turning it, ya mentioned it cut nice and I could hear it also makes me want get up and go start turning something 😎 Enjoyed the video!👍 And Merry Christmas!🎄
@@ThePapa1947 it was calling I was just itching to but I couldn’t because the sound would travel through the house and wake my wife up Lol lathe is in the garage 😄
Gorgeous plate! Everybody would like to have their dining utensils as beautiful as this!
Thank you very much. It will be on the table this Christmas. Happy you like it and thanks for watching,
Gary
Walnut is the best and you made the correct decision!!
Thank you Alan. I think for sure it was the best option.
Thanks for watching,
Gary
I’m glad you rolled the dice and did it the way you did. Beautiful work, keep on doing what you do you’ve certainly got it down.
Thank you very much and sorry for the late reply. Had an ankle injury.
Gary
What a beautiful piece of Walnut Gary. You did a fantastic job
I look forward to seeing more from you. Thanks again. Dave
Thanks so much Dave. Looking forward to having you watch and looking forward to when you can get back turning.
Gary
Absolutely beautiful Gary. I think you made the right call not putting in the contrast piece. The grain of this bowl speaks volumes for itself.
Thank you Ron. And for sure this needed to be only walnut and nothing added. The grain pattern hid the joint perfectly.
Thanks for watching,
Gary
The maple insert would have been a nice addition, BUT doing what you did made for one BEAUTIFUL bowl. Walnut is beautiful anyway, but you have elevated this piece to a whole new level. Gorgeous turning Gary!

A stunning piece Gary , I've been a carpenter for 52 years and have seen some amazing timbers but walnut is the best , this earth has given us some beautiful natural pieces 😊❤
It's wonderful the beauty God gave us, even in a fallen Earth.
Thanks so much Ian. Being a wood pattermaker we used Sugar Pine and African Mahogany. I hated having to paint the finished patterns with either Red, Black or Yellow lacquer.
Yes we are blessed with beauty in nature.
Gary
This is true. He gave us all this beauty. We also were trusted to make proper decisions. That does not always happen.
That is about the prettiest walnut I have ever seen.
Thank you Don and as it laid under my pole shed I would never have guessed.
Thanks for watching,

I think what you did was the right decision for the piece. Looks amazing!
Thanks so much and thanks for watching,

That grain is magnificent and the shape is perfect. What a beauty!
I can almost see the form of a tree in the basin of the bowl, with the trunk in the middle and the flaring out below and above - roots and canopy.
Thank you Cecilia! yes I see that tree as well.
Thanks for watching,
Gary
Great fix on that chunk of wood Gary and beautiful bowl Gary! You just have to love Walnut,
Thanks so much and thanks for watching,

What an absolute belter Gary. Stunning bowl ! Glad you kept it as one & didn't cut it for a few bowls
Thank you Jim. Yes I sure like it as one big bowl and the glue line is really hard to see.
Thanks for watching,

Beautiful piece Gary...great repair...my Christmas wish is to go back 55yrs and be your apprentice 😀stay safe...press on 😎 Joe
Thanks Joe. Well today I sure which i could go back...at least 3 days,

The perfect rejoin Gary and the perfect bowl ,its a beauty mate , Take care, Bram
Thanks so much Bram!
Take care my friend,

I love it and the only way I can describe the beauty of it is to call it AMAZING!
Thank you Carol. I am sure you understand the feelings I had while that beautiful grain appeared for a scrappy looking piece of wood. It was WOW!
Thanks for watching,
Gary
Looks great, Gary! It turned out beautiful! I think you made the right choice in just gluing it back together.
Thanks Billy, it was really my only real option. But had to make the cut first.
Take care,

Spectacular piece of Walnut - nicely salvaged. Great work!
Thanks so much Bill. Happy you liked it.
Gary
That turned out really great. Beautiful colors in the wood. I couldn't see where the cut was. Great job!
Thank you very much. It is amazing the beauty nature has for us.
Thanks for watching,

Another beautiful piece Gary. You made the right choice (in my opinion) in leaving it all walnut. The grain is certainly spectacular! Well done!! Ted M
Thank you Ted. I really was my only option.
Thanks for watching,

Great way to save a piece of wood. I like the natural finish you ended up with. Awesome piece of art…
Thanks so much Jay. Happy you liked it and thanks for watching,
Gary
I love it the way it is. You did a fantastic job covering up that joint.
Smaller pieces would have been just a beautiful. But bigger is always better.
Beautifully done! 👍👏
Thank you Les. With all this grain I was wanting to see it all in one place. Sure happy it worked out and you liked it.
Gary
Very Nice Gary. You did the right thing. Walnut has such beautiful grain that an accent strip would only interfere with it.
Thank you Dave. I have to say that was just an option and it was way on the bottom of the list.
Thanks for watching,
Gary
I really liked how you addressed the rough blank. Accent piece would have been out of place. Beautiful results. Thanks for sharing.
Thank you Dean. I never even tried a piece there to see how it looked. This will be nice on the Christmas table coming up soon.
Thanks for watching,
Gary
I love it Gary. A wonderful way to eliminate that saw cut!!
Thank you Michael. It sure worked good on this piece. All that grain really makes it hard to see the joing.
Thanks for watching,

Very good job of cutting and gluing the piece as I couldn’t even see the joint in the finished piece. Looks great.
Thank you Tom. For sure it is very hard to see.
Thanks for watching,
Gary
Great choice to glue two halves together. I think the bowl turned out fabulous. Looks like there may be a little chatoyance in the wood aside from the great figure. Maybe name the piece The Chainsaw Bowl.
I think using a maple inclusion would have turned the bowl into the Chainsaw Massacre.😂
Nice one, Gary!
Thanks John. The joint did match perfect because of the grain. I think the maple strip would have named it The Maple Massacre LOL, Only reason to do that is not loose any diameter
Happy you liked it and thanks for watching,
Gary

Wow, what beautiful wood. I would not have thought to cut and reglue it together.
Thank you Lance. Well I let it sit and age to get it dry. Would not have done it with green wood.

Absolutely beautiful Gary.

What a beautiful bowl!!! Thought the video moved a little fast. I really enjoy the commentary and watching the lines move.
Thank you Tom. Which part would you say moved a little fast. Always welcome comments and looking to improve.
Thanks for watching,
Gary
@ThePapa1947 don't get me wrong!!! I loved the video and the end result. But at one point your voice sounded like a chipmunk. I just really enjoy the whole process and I felt it was missing this time
Sorry about that. Right now I feel like an elephant stepped on me. Editing was a chore on this one. Yes there was one spot I did not edit the sound out. These videos would be 2 hours or more if we did not edit them. I will try and keep the chipmunk in his gage LOL
Just beautiful! The glue joint does not show and it is gorgeous wood. Well, the turning was good, too. :)
Thank you Josh...oh gee the turning was good too LOL
Thanks my friend,
Gary
Another nice bowl. My first reaction to the chainsaw cut was "clean it with a router and glue in a very dark peice on one end golden wood on the other end to create opposing accents when turned"
Thanks Bill. That could be an option. To be the wonder grain pattern that was in this one deserved a chance to flow from one side to the other. And it worked perfectly.
Had this been a more plain piece of wood I most likely would have put an accent piece in there.
Thanks for watching,
Gary
Amazing beautiful piece! Great decision on the glue up.
Thanks so much Victor. Happy you liked it and thanks for watching,
Gary
Looks amazing! I think you made the right decision!
Thank you very much James. Yes I do love it like this.
Thanks for watching,
Gary

Thank you very much Jim. A very Merry Christmas to you and your family.
Gary
Very nice Gary. You always do great work.
Thank you Walt and thanks for watching.
Gary
Thank you so much for sharing your wisdom! I would have never thought of that solution. Great as always!
Thank you very much. Sure happy the grain matched so well.
Thanks for watching,
Gary
Worth the effort and the chance! So beautiful, thanks for sharing!
Thanks so much Dianne. Happy you liked it.
Gary
Turned out 100% gorgeous!!
Thank you very much Lynda. It is such a beautiful piece of wood to work with.
Gary
@@ThePapa1947 I have some to work with but is still too wet so I have to wait for it to dry out more- it’s hard to wait
@@lyndaowen2154 waiting is something I am not good at.
If you have a lot you could turn one thin. Or do a twice turned bowl.
It would seem you made the right choice, Gary. Beautiful walnut bowl! Thanks, and Merry Christmas!
Thank you Greg and a Merry Christmas to you as well.
Gary
It looks awesome. I think you made the right choice.
Thank you Lee. It was pretty much the only choice when looking at the grain in this piece.
Thanks for watching,
Gary
Beautiful piece, love the grain. Scott
Thank you Scott. Happy you liked it.
Gary
You definitely made the right choice. Adding a maple strip would have really adulterated the piece. Great salvage job and great piece. Merry Christmas.
Thank you so much Tom. i just mentioned on another comment that putting the maple on this piece would be like using yellow mustard for a topping on chocolate ice cream LOL.
Merry Christmas my friend,
Gary
Thanks for watching,
Gary
A super bowl, you chose the right selection. ❤ Merry Christmas
Thanks so much Marge and Merry Christmas to you as well.
Gary
Turned out well it's a beautiful bowl
Thank you very much John.
Gary
A very pretty bowl that is. Beautiful.
Thanks so much my friend,
Gary
I wondered what your solution would be. Great solution and another beautiful turning.
Thank you Dave, the joint was more than I could expect. I knew the grain would help but it pretty much made it disappear.
Thanks for watching,
Gary
Looks great Gary. I think the way you cut and rejoined it worked perfectly. On camera i could see where it was joined. Absolutely right choice. All the best wishes to you and family during this festive time and may you have a great year ahead. Thanks for all your content this past year and looking forward to seeing more of your skills in the New Year. Cheers Bruce
Many thanks Bruce. Happy you liked this one. Thank you for following my channel

Thanks for watching,
Gary
Great job you have inspired me to do a similar idea with two odd chunks of black walnut that have been sitting staring at me to do something with them wonderful video as always, merry Christmas 🎄
Thank you Mike. I do have two pieces of Koa that are too narrow for a bowl. This is an option but not in any hurry.
Thanks for watching,
Gary
Excellent work 👏
Thanks so much and thanks for watching,

Thanks Mark and a Merry Christmas to you aa well.
Gary
Very beautiful Gary, got to love Walnut!! Merry Christmas
Thanks so much Laura and Merry Christmas to you.
Gary
Thanks for watching,
Gary
hello friend, I love thatthrough your art and this wonderful hobby thhat you have learned much patience
Thanks so much. I appreciate your comments and thanks for watching,
Gary
Hi Gary, Same as Phil for me I cannot see the glue joint.
What a beautiful piece of Black Walnut and what a beautiful shallow bowl.
Take care my friend and I hope you have as good a New Year as possible.
Hwyl, Huw
Thanks Huw, it sure ended up being a very special wood for a less promising piece of would with that chain saw kerf.
The New Year will be here soon. Wow this year sure went fast.
Talk to you soon,
Hwyl,
Gary
I think it turned out just perfect Gary. I think it was the right choice. It looked awesome you have a merry Christmas.
Thank you Tom. Very happy with it and happy you liked it.
Merry Christmas to you as well.
