@@Xeno-The-Wanderer not really, there are references to the 8 headed serpent (Yamata no Orochi) with Orochimaru.
He even has a technique, Yamata no jutsu, which turns him into a 8 headed serpent before being attacked by Itachi's Susanoo, paralleling the Japanese legend.
Edit: And Orochimaru is seen pulling out the Kusanagi sword from his mouth a couple of times.
The real Kusanagi sword (an imperial regalia of Japan) was said to have be taken out of Yamata no Orochi's head after it's death by Susanoo

Lol nah, Digimon is and always has been meant for kids. Japanese kids just don't have to worry about censorship as much, especially when it comes to showing skin. Doesn't mean older audiences can't still enjoy it. 🤷♂️

The worst localization sin from almost all 90s / early 2000s dubs was the removal of any japanese cultural references and make children believe it takes place in America. :(

As much as I like the voice actors in the English dub, the censorship ruined some of the greatest moments and even characters, looking at you Apocalymon. The pizza joke just straight up ruined his character. Don't get me wrong, I like both the sub and the dub, but the reason why I stick with the sub is not because of bad voice acting, but because of the terrible censorship.

Just so you know, the Latin American Spanish dub of Tamers was both uncensored and outrageously Mexican (with lots of slang thrown there and there) in Orochimon's episode, as he was kidnapping Jeri, she tells the group "Don't worry guys, my dad's got me used to dealing with drunk men"
Yeah, that was the original script.
Essentially Juri (seriously, they named her Jeri in the West, like American children can't pronounce the "u" in Juri!)'s family owns a bar and she helps serve the customers every now and then. She is used to dealing with drunk men because of that.
Without even seeing this video I'm getting flashbacks to Wizardmon's green chili sauce.

I believe it’s a reference to Lovecraft’s Deep Ones. The Shadow Over Innsmouth story in particular. They were fish people with an affinity for mating with humans and creating weird hybrids. 😅
The orochi was historically gotten piss drunk in order to slay it in the original legend

Personally, I don't like Gundramon at all. I know the running joke of Pokemon Design vs Digimon Design is most Digimon getting more weapons as they reach higher Stages of evolution, but Gundramon looks like somebody on the design team took the joke literally and made a Digimon out of it.

I'm very surprised Gotsumon and Pumpkinmon's deaths, sorry, "condemnation to Myotismon's dungeon" wasn't here. Really, it was one of the very few times a Digimon dub ever tried to censor plot relevant deaths this way. _Adventure_ had this weird thing where villains killing their minions was often censored (Gotsumon/Pumpkinmon, DarkTyrannomon, WaruMonzaemon) but sympathetic supporting characters dying was usually totally untouched (Wizardmon, Piximon, Chuumon, Whamon, Leomon). There was even an inconsistency _within a single episode_ where Machinedramon slaughtering a large group of sympathetic Numemon was uncut but him offing his villainous minion WaruMonzaemon was made out to just be a maiming ("he shot my paw!").
To be frank, I knew that Laylamon would be given a jumpsuit in the dub before the episode even aired in the US.
Not surprised, just take a look at Lilithmon. 😄

For all the censored things, I can see why they were done, be it to protect the children or save the network from parental anger. But the Apocalymon one... It's unacceptable. They murdered his character. He was the embodyment of the pain and suffering in the Digital World, and they just made him a goof.
Well, I doubt Saban had a choice, since at the time, they aired the series on Fox Kids, so they had to follow Fox's broadcast standards and practices (which is the main reason why the cuts happen).
I am brazilian and I am very glad our old digimon versions kept the history, musics and OSTs unchanged.

but the Brazilian portuguese dub is based on the American English dub. the European dub is based on the japanese dub

and Beelzebumon was now shortened to Beelzemon
oh and it's not just demons, angelic stuff was changed
SaintGalgomon was now MegaGargomon
HolyAngemon now MagnaAngemon
Dukemon was now Gallentmon

1. The censorship seem to be heavily focused on the Saban era of Digimon (aka Advetures, 02 and Tamers) which was toned down due to the fact that Fox kids is pretty conservative. It's okay to have angels and devils (those are okay) but it seems having things referencing biblical names.
By the time we had the Disney era (Frontier, Saviors) it kinda was more or less a bit more lax on digimon names (just issues with sex and the Citirmon thing was due to a post 9/11 issue)

There was some necessary censoring in an episode of 02. In the episode where Kari is taken to the Dark Ocean, the Divermon there decide that they want her to be their queen in the dubbed version and try to drag her into the Dark Ocean. In the original though, they wanted her to be the mother of their race they wanted to create with her.
That really led to some very......'non-child friendly' fanfictions!

Oh, I don't remember that episode for number 10, guessed I missed it but that one is a reference to the story of susanoo, Japanese god of storms who slade a multiple headed snake by having it drink wine. I guess that's why it has only one real head and the rest are mechanical.

Number 1 is an entire living nutshell of what the dub of Digimon Adventure was
There was also Nanimon getting wasted on soda instead of sake/wine and Wizardmon pretending to eat green chili sauce instead of pretending to drink on the job in Adventure, Gargomon's blasts being given the sound of lasers instead of gunshots in Tamers and parts of Rosemon's digivolution being cut because they showed off certain ... angles ... too much in Data Squad.

@@SiNKarnage I think that may have been a licensing issue, the guy who made the song died around that time and likely made it tricky.
Possibly because one, it was a movie series not made for television, and two, it was aimed at audiences who watched the original series as kids, and are adults now.

I agree with some of the censoring, but then the early 90s and 2000 was a pretty controversial time they were trying to adapt the show to children for people to watch and buy toys I was at that age so I understood what they were thinking but you got to admit some of them are ridiculous.
That is true. Plus, as the anime aired on Fox Kids and UPN, they had to follow their Broadcast Standards and Practices as well as standards changing with time(the removal of the Buddism reference in Digimon Season 1 is mainly due to some networks wanting to stay neutral when it comes to religion, hence why NBC censored VeggieTales, and the censoring of firearms was possibly done to avoid being insensetive, as parents who lost kids to school shootings actually cartoons and video games for the tragedies instead of using common sense and finding the true reason why they happen and how to keep it from happening again, although in Season 2, Deputymon got a pass until Digimon Fusion).

Okay, with the Orochimon thing in Tamers, the Sake in the Sub makes Sense considering what Orochimon is based on (hell, it's literally in his fucking name).
Thank goodness that we get all these censored episodes in sub and dubbed now on streaming service like Crunchyroll.

As far as I know Digimon Data Squad was the only one that had an Uncensored English Dub
Data Squad was the one with Citrusmon.
On another note, there were alternative English dubs from other countries. Uncensored.

How can the censors be against guns and explosives but completely fine with metallic wolves loaded with artillery (Metalgarurumon and Magnagarurumon) and a dinosaur with a revolver for an arm (Rizegreymon)?

ACTUALLY they cut all the scenes which Rizegreymon pointed the gun arm at the audience, so we can't say they left Rizegreymon unscathed

My guess is they had to edit out guns to be sensitive since the Columbine massacre has sparked belief that cartoons and video games aimed at kids is what triggers people to shoot up schools.

6:06 I remember watching digimon on jetix, when I was 10 years old.
With having a Digimon as a profile picture I feel obligated to leave at least one comment. I knew a few of these but never actually saw the original clips. All the same though, I cannot imagine how much worse the censorship would have been if 4-kids dubbed it. Even with all these cut Digimon still got away with more than Pokemon ever could. I'm also surprised there wasn't an honorable mention to Pumpkinmon and Gatzumon being murdered.

At least they kept the steroids and 666 references, and if I remember correctly they kept the joke about Izzy being turned on by Ladydevimon and Angewomon
In Turkey this censored Foxkids versions never aired we had uncensored Japanese versions of it. But translations were very inconsistent esspacially in zerotwo. Character names changed episode to episode, english ones to japanese ones. After the low raiting of Tamers due to popularity of Beyblade we never saw digimon again after first 13-14 episode of Tamers.

Weirdly enough in Germany we didn't have that much censorship. The Sake was called Sake in Tamers and we even had the original Bombs in Data Squad. Through I think it's funny that they went to such lenghs to censor some things so much
i noticed something was missing in the season 2 episodes that aired in the netherlands. i guess it was because of the gun they decided not to air the episode at all
My first pick was Magnamon's ultimate attack 'Unlimited Jihad' where he attack with suicidal explosion strong enough for an armor digivolution to earn a seat within the royal knights. Magnamon is also an Arab origin digimon which just earn the entire episode cut when I first watched it. Back then there were not yet youtube... and I wish to know what happened between wormon and buimon how Daisuke and Ken fought... turn out they didn't... Takeru was the one knocking some sense in him. Sooo many plot happened in one episode...
