I eat only one ‘meal’ a day = I eat ‘normal meal’ once a day. I still do eat breakfast and dinner but very lightly. (Fruits or sweet potatoes) I am not starving myself at all 😀 I should have explained it better, sorry lol Thank u for the concerns, tho💕

ReacThing that’s what I assumed one big meal with a sprinkle of little meals through out. I found eating only from 12-8 helped me be healthier since I wasn’t having too many late night snacks and I wasn’t over eating cause I ate too much breakfast this is kind of similar.

@Met3lAngel I've experienced the exact opposite. When I've been in Asia and I say I'm vegan/vegetarian, I get looked at like I'm insane and it was so rare to find a restaurant that had specifically vegetarian options/any options at all that could be made vegetarian (though that definitely differed between somewhere like South Korea and somewhere like Shenzhen). In the US, I rarely have that problem. Almost everywhere I go, there is something for vegetarians specifically because it's so much more common here, and if I say I don't eat meat, they're very understanding and there's always something I can eat. I do live in the PNW, though, so vegetarianism isn't uncommon at all here.

It's not that easy, I don't mean cooking isn't, but getting completely vegan ingredients. In a way meat is used as a spice, so everything has broth and most commonly fish sauce. Things like kimchi might seem vegan, but it has fish sauce. A lot of condiments or semiprepared ingredients have a meat "base", they give the umami flavour Asian food is known for.
Eating vegetarian or vegan in Asia isn't that easy, and if you ask whether something has meat, if it doesn't have concrete pieces of meat, people consider it to not have any.

Right, I wasn't surprised that she was hungry. Meat and dairy are heavy in calories and fats, so you're more likely to get full. She should've increased her fiber with veggies, grains & starches (bread, rice, potatoes, legumes), fruits, and increased her fats with avocado, olives, nuts & seeds. This would've helped her to feel more satiated. I've been plant-based for 9 years, so I started when veganism wasn't as big as it is now. I had to make my own burgers, "meat"balls, "meat"loaf, breakfast scramble, mayo, cheese, yogurt, sour cream, ice cream, etc. Thank goodness that tofu, soy curls, beans, and non-dairy milks were easy to get back then lol. I had to mostly rely on Asian & Indian groceries back then. Now I can go anywhere & find plant-based foods -- but it's making me fat lol.

Great video! I’ve been vegan for over a decade and I love seeing a non vegan try it with honesty.
Also, you are so right about location making a difference in the ease. Almost every big city in the U.S. it’s pretty easy. If you’re wealthy, online options are easy anywhere here.
But it really helps if you cook a lot and know how to cook. There are so many recipes from easy to very difficult that are very satisfying.
Ultimately it can take time to adopt a vegan diet. It’s important to prepare and make sure that you’re getting proper nutrition (which is important regardless of a vegan diet or not).

I've been a vegan for 4 years now, since I started university. At the beginning I thought I wouldn't be able to survive without my favourite cheese that I used to eat every single day with every meal, and some other foods, that had meat, that were a must for me for at least once a week. But it only took me 1 week to get used to it and about 1-2 months to stop craving any animal product. Needless to say that it forced me to open up my diet to things I never tried or even liked eating before, and the amount of new things I learned to make with the least amount of igredients still amazes me. Also, I believe that foods that don't try to imitate meat are the most tasty vegan foods you'll find!

I cheered when you finally figured out you can eat out haha, it's just a little trickier! Mexican, Italian and Indian food are great for Vegans. Chinese is too but it's a little like Korean food where you have to make sure there's no fish sauce etc. You can order pizza with no cheese, sandwiches with just veggies and hummus or even a peanut butter and jelly. And if you really get desperate for something different you could get some temple food.
A lot of cereals are vegan too, even chocolate flavour ones so you don't need to eat cookies for breakfast lol. You could have still had you're fruits and sweet potatoes. You don't solely have to live on meat and diary replacements too, although they are tasty. Like you discovered at the restaurant there is so much korean food you could have cooked at home too with just taking out the animal products: kimbap, bibimbap, japchae, jjajangmyeon etc.
I've been vegetarian for 16 years and only been to an actual vegetarian restaurant about 3 times (none of my family are vegetarian and aren't interested in going haha)

I was pescatarian for like 6 months then vegetarian for 6 months and I have been vegan for 5 years . Honestly I wish I was vegan sooner. You have to eat more because most vegan foods are calorically less but nutrient dense. If you ever want to check out more vegan food in Korea Megan Bowen is great! Also I notice I cook more rather than go out which helped me save money and fill more full because I got to make my own serving instead of what a restaurant gave me. I love that you did so much research instead of just starving yourself by eating like lettuce then saying being vegan made you sick or something. I know veganism isn’t for everyone but even just swapping out a few things here and there (like you said you plan on doing in the future) can really make a difference and if everyone thought that I’m sure it would have an amazing affect on the planet. Doing something is always better than doing nothing 💕
The easiest way to maintain a vegan diet, is to go grocery shopping. Buy chickpeas, beans, every vegetables and fruit you can think of, rice, pasta, noodles, buy vegetable broth or make it yourself. You can use the beyond burger to shape "meat"balls or use as filling in vegan dumpling pastry.
Herbs and garlic, onion, scallion to set flavours to food. I use mushrooms a lot. Especially enoki mushrooms. So yummy. Eat a lot of nuts and use it in food. It isn't that hard to go vegan anymore. I went vegan because of the animals, I felt guilty every time I ate meat, since I was a child. I was surprised over how easy it was to go vegan. I am Norwegian, but I eat a lot of different asian food. Especially Indian food, Thai food, Japanese food and Korean food. And some mexican.

Thanks for this video! I have been vegan 20+ years and love to travel and try foods. All we see of Korean food in the UK is very meat based bbqs... and the couple of Koreans I met over the years only talked about meat & seafood. So I always wondered what would I eat in Korea. It is definitely a challenge to adapt recipes in any culture where meat or fish plays a very central role in most dishes - but that normally leads to more creativity in the kitchen.
I've seen a lot of new vegans struggle when all the usual meals they grew up with aren't easy to make any more - but what usually follows is trying new things and falling in love with ingredients all over again. It definitely helps if you are willing to experiment in the kitchen. You can't get it right in such a short time but you can eat well and enjoy what you eat. I'd also suggest finding groups of people online doing the same journey - sharing tips and successes is good.
I found finding vegan food very easy in Hong Kong, India, Indonesia even Peru! It has definitely got much easier in the time I've been doing it - so maybe some day I will come to Korea and try my chances :-)

As a vegan, I appreciate you trying for a week! The mexican food looked amazing! The hardest part is starting out and not knowing what to eat, because then you kind of "starve" yourself because you aren't eating correctly. I am typically never hungry and feel full quite often. I keep my meals simple and pretty much eat the same thing everyday. Oatmeal in the morning, peanut butter and banana on toast for snack, salad and potatoes for lunch, and some sort of bean / lentil / chili / or pasta dish for dinner. Once you learn some staple meals, you will be full all the time. I hope you try this again!

I am soooooo proud of you. Thank you for all the info and for the challenge of a full week. I've been a vegan for 3 years, vegetarian for a few more before that, for health reasons and now compassion. I would love to travel to Korea, but kind of scratched it off the list because I don't want to go there and starve or have to cook while on vacation. Here in the States it is so easy to be a vegan. Loooots of options and places to go (a little less outside cities, but still manageable). My health got better and I lost 60 pounds. Never going back to animal products.

As a korean, I feel like a lot of traditional korean foods are vegetarian and can also be made vegan. it may be hard to find in restaurant, but I've seen A LOT of vegan alternatives in korean cuisine that I feel like would not affect its flavor that heavily

Are there any vegetarian (but eggless) options available in Korea? I mean... didn't she said like the Tteobokki is often cooked in fish sauce? Also, I've heard that a regular Kimchi is often fermented in fish sauce ;_; I really wanna try Korean cuisine but since I'm a vegetarian, I'm still on less options :(

Was a vegetarian for about 5 years and been vegan for a little over 3 years now. Can 100% say that for me personally a lot of the things that you miss is not necessarily the animal by product foods, but the nostalgia that goes with them. Food is very much connected with interacting with the people in your lives. Don't know if it's compatible with the Korean app stores, but there is an app called "Is it vegan?" that helps a lot if you want to check if things you already eat are vegan or just want a easier way to find vegan foods. Love from Texas!

The constant hunger could probably be attributed to a lack of calories. Meaning, you need to eat more, as meat is more calorie-dense than veg or beans. That's the mistake I made when I first went vegan. So I started tracking my food intake on Cronometer to get a more accurate sense of how much exactly I should be consuming. It really helps to cook at home, too.

Applause for trying a plant-based diet for as long as you did. I literally was just telling myself what would I eat if I ever visited Korea having recently gone vegan and I ran into your video, so thanks for this. I have been a vegetarian for two years and decided to go vegan starting the new year so I've been adopting a vegan diet for 7 days now and going from vegetarian to vegan wasn't as hard as I thought. Your reaction to the beyond burger was my exact reaction when I first tried it and is my absolute go-to for a burger. Love your videos

Thanks so much for trying, it was very interesting to see. I'm not a full vegan but I'm trying to maintain a 90% vegan diet. Here in Austria, it's quite easy to be vegan, because even the large supermarket chains now have a fairly large selection for vegans. A lot of restaurants have vegetarian and vegan options and a lot of vegan restaurants and small fast food chains have opened the past few years, so even going out for a vegan meal has been a lot easier than it used to be. But the most important thing I've learned the past year is to cook for yourself, it's the easiest way to cook cheap and yummy vegan meals.

i understand that you can't do full vegan, that's reasonable considering where you are. i am compelled to say though- considering your hunger, overall, it's about how much you're eating. so, if you eat like 200g (cooked) rice, with your choice of added vegetables, add nori, that's a whole meal! as long as you are eating enough food, you will not feel that hunger you describe. but that has to be lunch, i.e. you need at least a little food for breakfast and dinner. the fact that you have an all you can eat vegan buffet within driving distance of you shows your luck right there! THAT IS MY DREAM. you are living the vegan dream queen. and i totally understand that veganism may not be a totally viable option for you, but honestly, just the effort you took buying and cooking and sharing the beyond burgers was helpful in itself! just the effort to be vegan for a few days does so much good for the planet! thank you, gamsahamnida!

It is so friggen WEIRD to hear you speaking English instead of Korean but it’s fucking AWESOME too. You’re quite fluent sounding (not a shock from living in NY, my home state), but still, I’ve known people living in the US since they were teens and still have an insanely thick accent and aren’t fluent. Hell, sometimes your English sounded as if it’s the only language you spoke with an accent similar to mine!
Ok, now that I’m done going on a rant about your speaking (haha) I want to say it’s nice to see you trying veganism and attempting to pay more attention to your impact with how many animal products you use. I’m not vegan or vegetarian but I don’t eat meat too often really. Lack of funds or not liking the taste is what stops me, depending. I’m not shocked at your reaction to the beyond burger, but you should Google ‘the meatless burger that bleeds’. Basically it’s a fully plant based burger that looks, smells, and tastes like a real beef burger and even ‘bleeds’ like one! (Even real burgers aren’t bleeding, it’s just the juices are red, not sure why, but it’s not blood.) If you look it up, or better yet ever get to try it, I’d love to see your reactions! (In English or Korean as I don’t mind subtitles lol.)
Also, how can I be your friend? I’m jealous of your friends lol, you seem like such a fun person to hang out with! Sorry for the long comment!

I’m not vegan but I can’t eat red meats or sea foods at all my stomach can’t handle it idk why one time I went to a restaurant with my friends and I always order chicken or other options but this time they forced me to try the red meat after couple of hours I started throwing up it continued for a week ! I stayed in the hospital for couple of days because I was dehydrated.
My friends they felt pretty bad for not taking my condition seriously.
Sorry if my English is not that good just wanted to share an experience lol

I'm a vegetarian and when you ordered the bean taco it made me think about when I went to a Mexican restaurant and ordered a bean burrito I almost didn't mention I was vegetarian, but my server told me they cook the beans with animal lard! So always tell your server you don't eat meat, they could really save your ass!

I was vegetarian, vegan, & raw vegan at one point. Through all three I was forced to cook at home and avoided the vegan frozen options. And the benefits were amazing, but as soon as the holidays came around it was a wrap. I’ve given up on some meats, I don’t really mess with dairy, and I try to be more plant based & grains than anything else. And I always try to listen to my body. That has worked for me.

Super cool that you tried eating vegan. And I love your reaction to it because for me it feels very relatable. I am from Germany and we have a lot of vegan options. As I tried to go vegan for a year, I also felt some cravings from time to time. So just as you said in your results I now take vegan Options whenever I can and when I feel like eating something else I shop as responsible as I possible can and make it something special. Because of the many options we have here in Germany I have it easy. I wish Korea will also have more variety’s in foods in the future.

I really love your open-mindness and your conclusion. I think reducing the amount of animal products is the key. I really appreciate this video! I just wanted to say that's completely normal to feel more hungry because plant based meals are easier to digest. You just get to eat more and lose weight at the same time and it's awesome! There's plenty of vegan options you just have to learn that you don't have to focus on the things you can't eat, you have to focus on the new foods you will discover and eat instead!
