True! It's gotta be Cheddar for me, richer in taste. When I saw the Mozzarella, I cried a little (just kidding).
The type of bread doesn't matter to me.
Pan fried is what I love the most, but the cheapest toast with Gouda in a Sandwich maker is basically my childhood, and nostalgia is the best MSG

So funny! Growing up we would butter both bread before they went on the the pan, so you don’t have to take it off at any point. And we used Gruyère cheese mostly, or American. Swiss and cheddar also hold up. Mozzarella feels questionable lol.

I had no idea my mom didn't like grilled cheese either, but I grew up with her making it for me all the time, and even sometimes when I'm an adult!
When I said why is she making something if she doesn't even like it!? Her answer is: "Because I know you love it". - my heart.. I will never forget that moment. Or the way her grilled cheese always tastes the best.

I have many feelings about the best grilled cheese, but that one looked like it turned out well so I can't complain.
Savannah, if your bread breaks from spreading the butter on it, I suspect you just need to soften the butter more before spreading it on the bread.
That said, you can also try substituting mayo on the bread, it will always spread easy and it fries up into a lovely crunch too.

I've taken to melting the butter in the pan, and then quickly dipping the bread in that butter to coat it. I don't leave it in yet to cook, but rather pull it out and do the same to the other piece. Then I assemble and cook the sandwich.

In my household, we like to use more ingredients if we want. I personally like to combine spicy cheeses and mild cheeses, pesto, avocado, eggplant, and tomato. Some family members add chicken, sometimes bacon, sometimes ham. Really it’s a very versatile dish and I think that’s why it’s so popular here. We also dip in different types of soup if we want to. I like mixed vegetable soups, but nothing beats tomato.

Oh you should try my Breakfast grilled cheese. It is a crazy concoction no doubt. We have one of those sandwich press handheld grills for the stovetop. So fun to use. I like to put my buttered bread grill side down, add my fixins (which is American cheese, a fresh egg, already cooked bacon, fresh tomato slices, avocado slices, and a small leftover boiled potato sliced, then one more slice of cheese before smooshing it all together between the bread and grill plates). Let it cook on both sides evenly. Then flip out a nicely crispy closed sandwich. And I add a little mustard and sour kraut to the top. OMG is it so good. Haven't had it in over a year. But it is delicious. Have to eat it with a knife and fork though.

Everyone has their own way to make grilled cheese, I use mayo for a crisper toast and toast both sides. I used American cheese or a mix of provolone with mozzarella, depends what I have. I add garlic powder, black pepper, chives, and a little bit of Cajun seasoning. If I have any leftover veggies that are going to go bad like bell peppers or tomatoes, I'll stick some in there. No tomato soup for dipping, it's good on its own! 🤤

I love the idea of having different people show your grandma how to cook things, or both of you. Sharing of cultures. I used to live in Seoul, and I remember when my friend took me to Geojedo to visit her family’s pension. I got to watch them make kimchi (and help a little) and that was some of the best kimchi I ever ate. It was the first time I realized how kimchi and side dishes varied by region. Anyway, your grandma reminds me of how kind all the elders were to me in Korea. My first night in Seoul, I was left by my school manager at a kinda sketchy love motel in Gangnam, and I was honestly pretty tired and disoriented, not to mention suffering from a language barrier. I walked down the block and went into a restaurant, only to find I couldn’t read the menu. The owners were so kind. The elderly man spoke a little English and understood it was my first day in the country, so they really welcomed me and brought out dishes they thought I would like. I had bibim bap for the first time that night and it was so good! They even refused to let me pay, though I kept trying. I went back to that restaurant at least a couple times a month during the four years I was in Seoul. I had favorite street vendors too - places where they joked around with me, trying to get me to try new things and pounded me on the back, cackling, the first time I tried soju and nearly coughed up a lung haha. Or the time I went to the New Year festival at one of the palaces and played games, and a little (but very spry) grandma jumped on a board with me and knocked me clean off lol. That kindness left me with really fond memories of my time there, and watching your videos with your grandmother reminds me a lot of those people I knew.

Then I sprinkle them with garlic powder, onion powder, black pepper and turmeric if I have it. Plus, I add multiple cheeses like pepper jack, yellow cheddar, and mozzarella. Her version is a sad bland interpretation of a grilled cheese.
Update: When she said she can’t cook, it explained why she made something a 7 yr. old can make plain and complicated.

How I make mine.... and served it for years...
room temperature butter is best, if its cold it will always tear bread and toast...
I make an herbed butter with sage or chives and garlic and only use Kerrys Gold Irish butter..
I absolutely butter the bread on both sides.... and I add a little olive oil to the pan to prevent burning.. you can also spread mayo on the bread and just add herbed butter to the pan...
which is also a great taste...
For the bread I use a thick sourdough.. for the cheese i use pepper jack, gruyere and cheddar
I toast it well and serve with a tomato bisque soup.... garnished with chopped chives and a dollop of sour cream... sometimes I will drizzle it hot honey
it was a staple for years in both my catering companies...

  • @Dytunck
    @Dytunck 2 роки тому

That looked yummy. My method is to use room temperature butter and spread directly onto the white bread. The cheeses I've used are American (for the meltiness), Cheddar (for the rich flavor - though less melty), and Pepper Jack (because yum). One paper-thin slice of onion and one thin slice of ripe tomato (salt and pepper to taste). One strip of bacon crispy (60-65 seconds in microwave). One slice of cheese on each side of the sandwich. Press down firmly to melt all the ingredients together, then cut diagonally and serve with a hot tomato soup and a cold beverage. This is a sandwich with a million variations. Everyone has their own recipe, which makes it a classic. There's a grilled cheese sandwich shop across the street from me!

Grilled cheese with tomato soup is a good combo. But you can also cook grilled cheese with tomato slices inside too! Super yummy! I've never tried it with mozzarella cheese though. Only cheddar. I'll have to try it! 😊

I can't have a grilled cheese without tomato. A little squirt of mustard is really good too, especially if you're using a sharp cheddar.
When I was 12 and in the hospital, I couldn't eat much and the hospital food was gross, so my mom would sneak me grilled cheese and tomato sandwiches from the cafe upstairs. Heavenly.

grilled cheese is so versatile, I like mine either with tomato soup or just add kimchi inside along with the cheese, both are delicious!

We do use scissors in the kitchen. In America when you buy knives sets they always come with scissors (shears) It's not uncommon.

I grew up with grilled cheese and snow days. My mom would make it for myself and kids when we'd come in after playing in the snow. Then hot chocolate. :D
Oooh, as far as kitchen scissors...not true! I have 3 sets of kitchen shears! My grandma taught me, lol. I have plenty of knives, but I need my scissors.
Btw, thank you for u/l a video with grandma. I missed her. I'm sure I'm not alone. And I was worried about her.

Chihuahua cheese has the best pull. Use that with avocado inside and mayo on the outside for a crunchy outside. Dipped in tomato soup is *chef's kiss*

I'm an American and have been using scizzors in the kitchen for at least the past 40 years of my 63 year old life. Frankly I never meet an American who does not now use scizzors in the kitchen. The American in this video is the first to not use kitchen scizzors that I've noticed. Not only are the scizzors useful in opening some of the packaging that modern food comes in, but they are also great at snipping off the ends of fresh green beans and asparagus.

2 super easy things I'd always make for myself growing up (and still do) were grilled cheese sandwiches and quesadillas. Both can be made quickly and simply, or made a bit fancier if you feel like it. Either way, they're both pure cheesy goodness. Definitely great comfort foods!
