Mega City One is a vast, violent metropolis where felons rule the streets. The only law lies with cops called "judges," who act as judge, jury and executioner, and Dredd (Karl Urban) is one of the city's most feared. One day, Dredd is partnered with Cassandra (Olivia Thirlby), a rookie with powerful psychic abilities. A report of a terrible crime sends Dredd and Cassandra to a dangerous area controlled by Ma-Ma (Lena Headey), a drug lord who will stop at nothing to protect her empire.

Can we just appreciate how quickly Dredd thinks on his feet and can switch from seeing a friend to foe in front of him? One of the other Judges was counting on doing the exact same plan of either getting the drop on Anderson or waiting for Anderson to hesitate if she was spotted and then taking her out. Anderson saw through the crooked judge's ruse because she's psychic. Dredd sees through this because he's smart, and because he shows ZERO hesitation to take out a dirty cop.

My guess would be this isn't the first time Dredd has come across this situation. When "backup" arrives they ask MaMa if she knows who Dredd is. When she replies that she doesn't, Lex says that he does and demands a million to assassinate him. MaMa might not have known who Dredd was but he clearly already has a reputation. Doesn't seem like Lex ever expected this job to be easy.

0:37 Absolutely incredible attention to detail: The judge on the left with the shotgun actually lowers his weapon to his side, making his profile smaller whilst still covering his sector. This is something that is deliberately taught to soldiers during CQB/FIBUA training. A long rifle or other firearm with a stock sticks out like balls on a bulldog, especially around corners. Plus when it's way out there in front, worst case scenario someone can grab onto it and control your muzzle.

I have seen this scene so many times, and always wondered why Judge Chan didn't just feign ignorance at Dredd's question, or some other sort of lie. In fact, Chan's panicked reaction at that question, desperate for the other judges to arrive, was all Dredd needed to know this guy was dirty.
Dredd may not be psychic like Anderson, but he has great instincts. Dredd was already suspicious that judges could get into a locked-down block so easily and up there without some running gun battle against Ma-Ma's gang. Dredd first of all asked how many others were with Chan, a fair question (but tactically useful if his suspicions were confirmed). But Chan overplayed his confidence, so Dredd tested him further with the question about his missing partner Anderson. At that point, Chan might have saved the subterfuge by playing it cool (saying he didn't know all the info, or they were still looking, etc.), but instead, his guilty mind broke into a panic and that reaction more than anything confirmed he was an enemy not an ally. Not only that, but Dredd also knew how many more dirty judges he would have to take down aside from Chan. This is why Dredd is so dangerous, not just combat and a harsh attitude, but street smarts.
The only pity is that after Chan's radio call to Judge Lex, Dredd never had time to scoop up Chan's lawgiver ammo before the next confrontation.

*btw you can't say, don't know or still searching for her, because there's a delay in his answer (due to panic attack). Those two answer need a quick response, which's not possible due to him not ready for what Dredd asking.

To those asking for a sequel, or a series: you never learn.
    “MORE” ≠ “BETTER”
Part of the beauty of this movie is that it is a simple story with a beginning, middle, and end. It’s also one of the reasons we’re all here a decade later still watching clips - because a franchise hasn’t milked the idea dry.
Hollywood wants to exploit every piece of IP until the thing you loved, whatever it is, is met with a shrug, at best, and disdain, at worst. You’re like abuse victims who have been conditioned to ask for more when it isn’t really what you want.
Appreciate this movie, and stop asking for more.
Btw, the things we like about this movie (the simple story, the creativity despite a low budget, the decision to not water it down to appeal to a larger audience) are the reasons it’s great and also why it didn’t get a sequel. This is the *opposite* of Disney is doing to Star Wars and all of these other “cinematic universes.” They are antithetical. What we should all be thirsting for is more simple stories, more risk-takers, more visionary creators and directors. Jaws, Rocky, Halloween, even Star Wars, all had these qualities. They had a beginning, middle, and end. They’re not great because of their endless sequels, prequels, reboots. They were all meant to end, not go on forever.

A fan could make a sequel to this that every other fan would love but I do agree that Hollywood has a tendency to care more about a cash-grab than an actually good movie lol. Imagination is practically infinite though so I'm not sure I buy the premise that an idea can be "milked dry" but it can be cheapened by unimaginative cash-grabs that care more about money than cinema lol

AND he's doing all this while staying active in the moment. yeah, Id forget about the ammo too

But the part that doesnt make sense is that they were killing tons of gangsters with weapons prior to this scene and neither of them bothered to pick up any weapons when they knew they were trapped in a situation with limited ammo.
They also probably should have brought more ammo. The way it was presented in the movie, it looked like they only went in with one magazine each.

    - First, the corrupt judges had the drop on both Dredd and Anderson so I wonder why they didn't shoot immediately, especially since they knew how capable they were.
    - Second, why didn't Dredd take the ammo from the fallen judge? The ammo isn't tied to the specific weapon, right? And Dredd must have had time to get a couple of magazines before the reinforcement arrived.
