Mega City One is a vast, violent metropolis where felons rule the streets. The only law lies with cops called "judges," who act as judge, jury and executioner, and Dredd (Karl Urban) is one of the city's most feared. One day, Dredd is partnered with Cassandra (Olivia Thirlby), a rookie with powerful psychic abilities. A report of a terrible crime sends Dredd and Cassandra to a dangerous area controlled by Ma-Ma (Lena Headey), a drug lord who will stop at nothing to protect her empire. - Фільми й анімація
I dont know why this movie flopped so bad. In my opinion it’s a masterpiece. They remade this exactly how they should’ve.
I read it was an advertising issue., as in whoever advertised the movie did a terrible job
One of my favorite movies of all time. I wish they would make Rogue Trooper or ABC Warriors. Marvel is so gay. 2000AD is the shit.
Yeah it was just a bad ad campaign and the original “Dredd 3D” title made people think it was going to be another lame 3D flick trying to cash in on the post-Avatar buzz.
Turns out the 3D (especially slomo) scenes in this film were phenomenal
It was ONLY released in 3D. And whilst the 3D slow-mo sections could be good the fact it's a dark film makes 3D absolutely HORRIBLE. (3D glasses dim the screen, that's why "good" 3D use like Avatar or Transformers, if not the story at least the use of the 3D, is set in bright midday daylight).
Eh, looked fine in my theater.
You sly dog you caught me monologing 😂
I always thought it was "you got me monologuing" as it was their conversation that started the monologue rather then syndrome coming with a prepared speach
Yeah its definitely “you got me monologuing” as saying “caught” would imply intent. Mr Incredible eggs him to monologue to buy time.
I always thought it was like a continuation of his first bad ass talk with Dredd before he got knocked.
"Ready?"
"Yeah."
"You look ready."
5 words. I love how little dialogue is in this movie and how much is expressed through it
Made for awesome character progression as well since at the beginning he asked the same thing and said “You don’t look ready.”. That’s the proper way to have a badass female character.
That was in fact one of my favorite clips from the movie. She did look ready.
Yeah the character progression from rookie to combat ready/experienced was really good
That's cause it's well written
“The perps were…..uncooperative.”
Strong chins were a requirement during the casting of this movie
Lex could have played Dredd with his chin
I love how she stood up to Dredd because she realized the hacker was a victim. Coerced into doing terrible things, but a victim all the same. He'll probably end up in jail in the long run, but he won't be dead.
There is actually a follow-up comic to the Clan Techie's story in this movie
If only real cops were capable of nuance.
Like I said in another video, The difference between Dredd and Anderson is that they represent two different Ideals writ large that while similar aren't the same.
"I am the Law" is more then a catchy phrase with Dredd. It is an imperical statement of fact about the man and his single minded dedication to enforcing Law within a city that is beset by so much crime, and In Mega city one those crimes can range from murder to spitting on a sidewalk while wearing a red shirt on the second tuesday of the month but no matter how severe or petty Dredd will enforce the law without hesitation, restraint or mercy.
By comparison, Anderson is justice; the ephemeral belief that the guilty should be punished while the innocent should be protected. It's not as easy or simple to enforce or uphold as the Law because there are those who can commit unspeakable cruelty and use the law as a shield against judgement while there are people like techboy who had no choice but to break the law.
This is all communicated to us clearly in seconds without having either character get up on a soap box and giving a speech about ideology or philosophy.
It's perfect.
@@guitarhausdoesntknowwhatac3285 Nail on the head. It sucks that I didn't even know this movie existed until covid19 lockdowns. The mishandled marketing for this movie is criminal. It is a diamond in the rough.
@@etiennesickleton1483 That's Ceasars Give Power To Ceasars
Dredd is quite honestly one of the great movies of the 2010s, and is in my eyes a perfect film.
Zero fat, a faithful adaption and utterly satisfying.
I think the early 2010's started off great with the potential to become an era of greats. Inception, Dredd, Mad Max, early Avengers movies. However, around 2015 woke politics truly started to seep in and writers became more concerned with virtue signalling on twitter than they did with respecting a movie's lore and universe. Movies become nothing more than vehicles for self inserts.
@@The_Greedy_Orphan That is so true.
Actually, Dredd is an interesting example of some of the woke agenda's alleged "values" done in a completely natural, non-cynical way: his boss is a person of colour, and the female lead is an extremely strong character, and the female antagonist is terrifying and convincing.
But it's all COMPLETELY natural. I have only noticed this on rewatches (because this kind of thing is so aggressively pushed now, with no nuance), but when I first watched the film in the cinemas it didn't even cross my mind.
Don't forget True Grit and Enders Game, both great adaptations
@@The_Greedy_Orphan
Great point and something I like to express to folks is that all that stuff just needs to be built into a good, believable story, mostly a good story since believability can be axed in a lot of instances. @@xxczerxx
@@xxczerxx Please don’t use that sort of hyperbole. It demonizes aspects of entertainment to a point of being way too broad.
I like how Dredd turned getting shot and stitching himself up into an educational experience
Like he said to Anderson, she's still on assignment
Dredd: First aid 101, this gaping bullet hole in my side.
Anderson was so badass in this...she really got her trial by fire and emerged as a refined judge. I think her arc was the most impressive.
Agree, her Arc defines this story, it’s wonderful
Still one of my favourite bits in this movie:
“Ready?”
“Yeah”
“You look ready”
Hers is the only arc, Dredd is always Dredd
Anderson is badass, her arc is good, and her attire is appropriate. How does a scifi enforcer who happens to be a girl dress? Answer: the same as her male counterparts. Body armor is body armor, no "boob plates" nonsense here.
That's one of the many things I love about the film.
Dredd may be the title, but he's not the main character. Anderson is. For Dredd, this is just another Tuesday.
So glad he didn't say that _before_ she fired. Some movies can't resist showing the bad guy realizing he's been beaten, but Dredd knows it'd be stupid to give up Anderson's advantage for the sake of a quip like that. He saves it till after the threat is gone for he and Anderson to enjoy.
Yes, the same way he says "Choke on that." to Chan AFTER smashing his windpipe
The amount of trauma the tech head went through under that psychotic woman, he EARNED that free pass to get out of that hell hole
I love how she waxed the same amount of judges he did. She proved her worth on her first outting.
Not really. One shot in the back, the other caught offguard
@@rydekk-4644the entire point of her psychic abilities is that it gives her a lethal edge, stop being a misogynist

I like how this scene shows us that even though judge dread is incredibly intimidating and scary he is still human nonetheless 😮
and the only reason he lost was because he had no ammo left to deal with this guy.
With Dredd being _Dredd_ (a force of nature), Anderson’s development is the heart of the story. It’s been accurately noted that this film is one of the most effortlessly feminist action movies ever made: Anderson, Ma-Ma, Chief Judge are all strong figures with nothing made of their sex - which is what a well-made movie will do. Anderson also doesn’t have to be butch, she’s still feminine and her emotions are part of her character. Anderson stands with Ellen Ripley, Sarah Connor, and Imperator Furiosa.
I agree. She's very powerful.
Finally, someone gets it. Women trying acting like men (and sometimes visa versa to prop them up) is such a wrong move and screams fake as it is and destroys the reason them characters are so beloved. Because they have a feminine, loving heart and don't pretend to be something they aren't.
Ripley forever
She also passed her evaluation by becoming as decisive and tactical as a street judge, but without losing her heart. She is still deadly and strict, but is overall a kinder judge than the draconian Dredd. You can tell even he lowered his cynicism a bit from the experience, great character development for both of them.
@@KaiserAfiniWe both know "they" don't want that. Cannot relate to people being not toxic and hideous
Lex's reaction to the High Ex shot is priceless 😂😂😂
Lmao that's literally such a universal response to some shit happening at work:
"Motherfucker."
The judge that got lit up by Anderson must have been so confused, lol.
I doubt they had time to even process confusion before being dead.
"I'm your backup"
_"As a mind-reader I knew you were going to say that."_
"What? Oh, wait..."
"fucking hacks"
It was established in the previous scene that the corrupt Judges believed that Dredd was alone.
@rebmcr I was referring to the woman Judge that she lit up.
I like how he fixes one end of the bullet hole but not the other
Simplified for brevity. That being said, exit wounds are worse than entry wounds, right?
Treated off camera
One would assume the solution goes through the entire wound all the way to the back. It looks like it chemically cauterize the wound.
@@healthycigarettes5088 That would cauterize his entire body and kill him... and it is a paste so it is impossible. So the only solution is she fixes his wound in the back.
man...its been 12 years...can we FINALLY get a sequel
Where when who?
I'd love to see a Dredd/Anderson v Dark Judges......
I'd really rather not, they'd ruin it.
in this current climate of wokeness and mary sues? fuck no!
No please they’d ruin it. A 3-5 Season series would be better.
Fucking great movie. When Dredd tells Anderson she looks ready, she really did.
its such a shame we didnt get a sequel, the transformation of Anderson throughout the movie was amazing. she goes from nervous Rookie, to a determined prospect!
what happened behind the scenes to make this movie fall off... i'd pay for a sequel!
The marketing was virtually non existent and the studio didn't have any faith in it.
it is by far, one of the coolest and greatest action Sci fi movie i've seen for the last 20 years .
Saying "you look ready" means alot coming from Dredd.
Judge Dredd: A superhero without the tights!
It is because Dredd is from 2000AD. English comic. That tights stuff is all Marvel comics from America. One big difference is that 2000AD usually features technology as the superpower rather than magic. And it has magnificent artwork. Marvel stuff is G-A-Y as F-O-K. I know because I am not American, and I had access to both as a kid. Anyone reading Superman etc. might as well admit they love wearing a pink tutu and go to church every Sunday. This is not to say America does not have good comics. Robert Crumb is American, and there is the Fabulous Furry Freak Brothers. But if you want the sh-ee-t, 2000AD's Rogue Trooper, ABC Warriors, and Johnny Alpha, for example, make for even more enthralling reading than Dredd. Rogue Trooper, thak, thak, thak. ABC Warriors, pull your spine out using your head or chuck seeds on the ground to allow thorn plants to grow up through your body. Wicked. Comparing American superhero stuff like Spiderman on his camp little motorbike to 2000AD is like comparing the Sherman tank or those burp guns to Tiger Tanks and a Schmeisser.
Early Dredd was basically latex tights.
@@anarchistangler Early Dredd wears tight latex tights, a bright golden buckle that's almost a codpiece, and lime green wellies and marigolds.
@@darthkek1953yeah I saw your first comment about the tights. Why are you so obsessed with the tights? I think Evelyn Hooker would be reassuring for you there. True, Dredd wears skin tight undergarments, but the artwork from the very outset focused on his robust body armour and grim mouth and steel jaw. That is what sticks out. Not the long johns. Furthermore, his character is raw, merciless, remorseless, devoid of any empathy beyond brutal execution of the law - no pun intended. Not effete sort of handsome and boy-next-door tights wearing, beloved by little old ladies and other tyoes of fag bags - and definitely not appealing to men with an inappropriate interest in boys next door - like Superman and Spiderman etc. Dredd is more like Rorschach in Watchmen. Maybe you refer to the Stallone version of Dredd? Stallone the , ahem, 'Italian Stallion'? That Dredd movie was made guess where - America. It was as much of an abomination as the Hollywood renditions of Charlie and the Chocolate Factory and Fabtastuc Mr. Fox. They just don't get it, mate. It is beyond their horizons, as they were so conservatively set out by their pilgrim fathers and huge swathes of Mormonism etc. plus the mind whitening deprivations of McCarthyism. Hollywood redeemed itself with the awesome story of Dredd played by Keith Urban, however, script and all. As we are noting here. It was really true to the comic universe Dredd comes from. Although I loved the ABC warrior in the Stallone movie. There was almost enough of a hint of cruelty there to make me pay attention to the movie when he pulled that guy apart. Stallone was just a prancing pretty boy, with his usual barely intelligible grunting, a sad caricature of who Dredd really is. Keith Urban"s Dredd was less garishly outfitted and deadly in every way. The scene with the gatling guns was freaking awesome. Again, very entertaining movie.
@@anarchistangler i'm not reading all of that mate I'm just telling the poster Dredd wore tights in the early days of the comic.
Buy that post, fuck me mate, are you on Blue Meth or something?
My chap was an avid 200ad fan still got hundreds of comics and he said By far the best comic to screen adaptation by far
I saw the film in the cinema and I can't believe it was 12 years ago. I like Dredd even though the reviews weren't good
The reviews were good, but nobody read them 😭
I gotta admit. If I were in his shoes I wouldn't have pass up that opportunity to monolog. Part of the reason why it was so fitting.
Never noticed this before since it all happens so fast but there's an error at 2:26 - 2:36 he's going through all the different ammo types available and it's all solid zeros but when he gets to High Explosive rounds all ammo types are showing 25 rounds each and 50 FMJ.
also he is out of AP rounds earlier. Then has them about 45 seconds later for the wall shot..hmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmm
that's the other judge...@@rylandorr
@@rylandorr Lex is the one who used the AP rounds to shoot Dredd.
They were doing so good until he needed that High EX, hahaha.
How does that gun cram so much ammo in
Might be the only place where I could not suspend disbelief. The armor piercing round comes out of say a .50 caliber barrel. Becomes a 5 inch hole (so definitely not a sabot armor piercing round) in the wall and Dredd. and then the dressing for the wound is what you might expect of a .38 caliber. lol Still one of the greatest movies of its kind ever. Karl Urban is awesome.
Acceptable Breaks From Reality.
Besides, this is a movie where White Phosphorus is a common ammo type for Judges. ;P
The large hole from the wall is from spalling. The hole from entry side is small, the exit hole is larger because the material will rip itself off by the kinetic pressure, then it again enters through body armor as the bullet itself.
@@paristo It was a round hole. I don't know but I do not believe spalling makes that kind of hole.
@@UltimaKeyMaster Thank you responding but it was an armor piercing round, not a white phosphorus round.
@@josephnoneofyourbeeswax8517 I know you were talking about the AP round, I just mean that if you have judges casually wielding white phosphorous, it's not the weirdest thing that they can cram an AP round in there, haha.

„Wait for her to shoot you!“
Classic!
"betray the law" - solid callback to a classic line and hilarious reaction =D
This film so needs a sequel! ❤
This is a very good movie that get's it close to the comics. Great job
Just noticed an editing error. When Dredd is desperately calling out the ammo types, a bunch of them say 00 on the bottom to support it.
When he finally gets to HIGH EX, his ap(armor piercing) and in(incendiary) are magically restored.
best science fiction movie since Aliens. Really do not understand why no sequel or tv-series.
What did you think of Prometheus?
Kind of a flaw that Ma Ma would make a safe bunker for herself but leave the guy who knows the password to get in, OUTSIDE of the bunker.
Thats as stupid as leaving your house door key on the welcoming mat on the front drive.
Heard from Canada lately?
Probably didn't expect for him to not get instantly vaporized because they know he's her right hand.
A commentary on "don't do drugs" lol. Plus she didn't deem him important enough to her to keep him protected on the other side of the door. Her mistake
There are bad films and there are films that have bad releases. This film's cult status puts it squarely in the latter. We may never get a sequel, but we'll always have Dredd.
The script is rather simple, like that moment when the corrupt judge stops before killing Dredd and gets shot during the monologue, but I don't think this movie tries to be something complicated, it's just a solid piece of action in a cyberpunk shell.
One of those just plain out freaking awesome movies, criminally underrated, and a crime that we didn’t get more from this world of Dredd
4:34 look of utter contempt, knowing that matey is about ot get his due.
From the other judges' POV they were probably anticipating Dredd to use standard gunfire and not an explosive to the face.
every scene is magic
Even in a dystopian future where it’s not a issued weapon, the MP5 still somehow finds its way into an LEO’s hands
Look, that smack you do when loading it is too cool to pass up.
I always like to picture them filming all the B-roll (or whatever you call it) of like... "okay now slowly creep out from behind a wall" "okay now do the same with 3 other walls" "now come quickly around a corner and find nothing" etc. It must feel kind of silly at times.
Movie Magic!
Top 5 sci fi
Still want a part 2. Love this movie!
Great movie deserved more recognition, hopefully ends up a classic.
A real masterpiece
Hope they eventually would make a sequel
I wish they would make a sequel to this
A fkn masterpiece, too bad it flopped or we would have at least one sequel.
I feel like this convo and shootout with Lex was critical in Dredd's assessment of Anderson. One one had, you have Lex, a 20 year veteran Judge with the full uniform and Lawgiver. On the other, you have Anderson, a rookie that already failed the aptitude test twice at this point, with no helmet and a generic SMG she took from a thug. Lex, the seemingly more capable Judge, betrayed the law for his own gain, like a criminal, whereas Anderson 'betrayed' the law to spare the life of an abuse victim (the hacker dude). I think Dredd always knew the system was far from perfect, but his giving Anderson a pass was his own attempt to make a difference, inspired in part by Anderson's own wishes.
There is no room for bullshit time waste in this movie. It's hard action moment to moment, it gets to the point the way a man and his word does and moves straight on to the next thing. I would even call it an 'efficient' movie. It's fucking badass. I love the no bullshit approach. They're here to clean house and clean house they will.
Your comment is an absolutely perfection summary of this movie! I couldn’t have said it better 👌👌
I genuinely love how professional and high-T that "Motherfucker" at 2:39 is.

we need a sequel. i love this movie
A perfect movie
I love the implication here, that Dredd's going through the floor plans of Peach Tree in his head, calculating travel times, factoring in a few gunfights along the way, and concluding, "I need to stall 36 more seconds for my partner to show up." Because she WILL show up. He has absolute faith in that. It's all just walking time.
GOOD MOVIE
Big problem I had with this part of the story. If Dredd was so low on ammo, why not pick up one of the many guns of the goons he's been taking down this whole time? They don't have hand recognition on their weapons.
Plots demands Dredd doesn't do it I guess
Dredd is very proud of his justice department equipment
Small detail many might've missed: at 3:36 when Lex's last shot goes through the wall and Dredd, it gets caught on the armour plate on his belly and clatters to the ground instead of continuing straight through
Still actually got 'Dredd 3D' at home on blueray, the one and only time I watched something in 3D and actually enhanced the the visuals to go with the film instead of just using because it could.
RAW AS MEAT !!! THIS MOVIE !!!
The film is great because it balances with the the comic book such as Dread never ever shows his face to his fans ever.
Why was the hacker left outside? So Dredd could open Mama's room ? 😂😂😂😂

I like how the last ammo type he has is HIGH EX.
I like to imagine that Anderson needed that time to get close enough to the judge because her MP5 couldn't penetrate the armor otherwise.
Crappy armour if an mp5 goes straight through it.
2:46 when playing metal gear v multiplayer with one player to fight against. it's kinda odd that lex is alot more of interesting person the way he sound like he had hatred against Dredd but didn't bother to shoot but hesitate. and all he just did is "wait" while he was talking down at Dredd.
Zarjaz! All of it!
What are Alvare's last words?
Funny how he says Full Auto (meant FMJ?) -> Incendiary -> Armor Piercing and got "Empty" for all of them
Then he says "HighEx" and the gun suddenly seems to have found 25 more rounds of both AP and IN as well as 50 FMJ? :D
Yeah, noticed the same.
I thought the idea was that you have different ammunition for a semi and then for auto. But that just doesn't make sense for firing mode.
But why to slip a sudden 25 rounds for everything?
That is so rookie mistake right there...
Even thou he was going to live they made you worried
Didn’t know they used Glock mags as their magazine props. Pause it at 5:36 and they just put tape over the magazine plate
They are probably using glocks. Their lawgiver handguns were normal blank firing handguns with a cover on, according to Karl Urban.
That shotgun must be black powder. Smokey. Looks cool though.
It bothers me a little that Lex wasn't killed by Dredd, that he knocked him out, that he realized too quickly that he had someone behind him and that Dredd told him "Wait her to shoots you." when he was already dead.
In hindsight changing ammo type by speaking out loud seems like a bad tactic. You're telling the enemy what incoming firepower you're prepping for. Or in this clip's case telling the enemy you're out of ammo.
I think it's an intentional caveat to the gun having like five types of ammo stored in one shot. You need *some* way to change that without a reload and you're not gonna fiddle with the side panel in the middle of a heated gunfight.
Plus, I would say having him run out of ammo like this makes a lot of sense, this was a simple mission gone wrong and extended like crazy because of Mama. A simple get in get out bust turned into hell on earth. Probably didn't expect to need an extra belt's worth to make it out alive.
3:08 Female Judge: “Lower your gun, rookie. I’m your backup.”
3:13 Yeah, I don’t think so, honey. Anderson can sense a crooked judge in league with Ma-Ma a mile away.
@4:55 I don't think he needed to say that "Wait for her to shoot you" line. The audience would've got it if he said nothing.
Nitpicking aside this was a great movie, one of very few that was better than the original.
