  • In this wine collecting video, John Jackson DipWSET a/k/a Attorney Somm discusses Second Growth Bordeaux wineries Leoville Las Cases, Leoville Poyferre and Leoville Barton in detail, including their shared history. Attorney Somm then discusses the grape growing and wine making philosophies for Leoville Las Cases, Leoville Poyferre and Leoville Barton and the wines produced by Leoville Las Cases, Leoville Poyferre and Leoville Barton (including their second wines, which are excellent cellar defenders). Finally, Attorney Somm discusses wine collecting and wine buying strategies for these three outstanding producers, as well as his favorite vintages for Leoville Las Cases, Leoville Poyferre and Leoville Barton. #leovillelascases #leovillebarton #leovillepoyferre

    Visited Langoa and Poyferré in the past. They are my true St Juliens. Barton is classic, complex. Poyferré shows more glamour. Love them all.

    As always, superbly presented information and insights - much valued and appreciated! Your dissections and discussions of top Bordeaux producers and their wines, wineries, and vineyards are always much anticipated and greatly appreciated, here on YT and other platforms as well. And this is certainly not an exception! Although I’ve tried only the La Réserve de Leoville Barton and I’ve still got a bottle of Clos du Marquis, I’ve always been interested in Chateau Leoville hence I truly enjoyed this video and definitely have learned a lot from you (as usual😊). Thank you for sharing! Santé, John!

    I’ve just rewatched this as Barton and Poyferre have both just released 2023 en primeur at reasonable prices and I’m tempted to order a case. Which of the two would you go for if you could only buy one?

      Close call but for 23 I’d probably go with Barton. First vintage in new winery I believe.

    Have such a love for the 3, poyferre had difficult years but they are great recent years, my grandfather was a barton and poyferre man, he would have loved the development of the wines, but imo las cases is the king, tasted a magnum 89 wich was superbe. greetings from the netherlands

    I’ve bought several bottles of Le Petit Lion and thought it was an excellent wine without being so expensive. I found them for $50 per bottle. I really liked the 2017 that I opened last February. The other wines that you mentioned I have not tried yet, but I will in the future because I’ve already been looking at them.

    Great video as always, thanks for sharing! Poyferre has always struck me as being the best value out of the 3, so I’ve tended to purchase it ahead of the others. ‘05 Poyferre is next on my list. I reckon it’s got to be pretty much ready by now right?

    • @AttorneySomm
      @AttorneySomm  9 місяців тому

      Thanks very much! Yes, I enjoyed the 05 Poyferre a couple years ago, so that one should be ready to go any time!

    I’ve never had a delicious las cases, it also seems like a pale imitation of Lafite. They need a touch more of Poyferre’s style.

    • @AttorneySomm
      @AttorneySomm  9 місяців тому

      It can definitely be a bit more austere. Needs so much age.

    Thanks for the insight. I’m sitting on some 2014 and 2018 Ch. Leoville Barton. Any personal exposure to these vintages? Expected drinking dates?

    • @AttorneySomm
      @AttorneySomm  9 місяців тому +1

      Believe I have some 2018. That one I would try to give at least another 8-10 years if you can. The 2014 is much more approachable though. I think you could try that one in another year or two after a 2 hour plus decant.

    Have you tried a Leoville Barton 2016 yet?
    Wine -searcher days its drinking window is 2022-2066.
    Would it be too austere or tannic yet? That drinking window is crazy or maybe that year got so tannic i dont know how they come up with such a broad window

    • @AttorneySomm
      @AttorneySomm  9 місяців тому +1

      Yes it is excellent! It will be long lived but should reach peak maturity 17-20 years after vintage. You can still enjoy it younger with a long decant and a meal. I’d try to wait until at least 2026.
