  • Leoville Las Cases was purchased in 1638 by Jean de Moytie, a member of the Bordeaux Parliament. He named the winery Mont-Moytie. Through marriage, the estate inherited by the
    de Gascq family. Alexandre de Gascq (or Les Cases) renamed the winery Leoville (or Lionville) Las Cases.
    All lands were expropriated during the French Revolution and re -sold/re-distributed so that 3 estates were created: Leoville Barton, Leoville Poyferre and Leoville Las Cases.
    At the end of the 19th century, Theophile Skawinski purchased Leoville Las Cases. Skawinski passed his shares to Andre Delon,. The Delon family has managed the estate since that time. Currently,
    Jean Hubert Delon manages the winery
    Leoville Las Cases is quite a large winery (98-hectares) which is comprised of 67% Cabernet Sauvignon, 23% Merlot 10% Cabernet Franc. The 1988 vintage was a blend of 65% Cabernet Sauvignon, 21% Merlot, 11% Cabernet Franc and 3% Petit Verdot.
    For more information about the winery, please visit their website at www.domaines-delon.com/en/leo...

    I had a 1988 Las Cases here last year. I found the wine nicely complex yet delicate. The nose did hit on all the primary and secondary notes of a classic Bordeaux, dark fruit, crushed berries, and black plums. Secondary notes of leather, cedar and some oak, before cascading into earthy overtones. Not much funk on this one. On the palate smooth, round tannins with a supple mouthfeel and a decent finish. We all rated it between 94-95 pts. It was a very elegant wine.

      rjo8500: thanks for sharing your views. Pretty similar to what I found. I still think this has some life. I have a 89 which I am saving I think it will be even better than the 88. Cheers!

    Great video, as always! What is your opinion on how this wine stacks up to the other two Leovilles? It's quite a bit more expensive than the other two, is LLC that much better in quality?

    • @TrophyWineHunter
      @TrophyWineHunter  Рік тому +1

      noahcap: thank you for your continued support and question. In my opinion, LLC is quite a bit more suited towards my taste profile compared to the other 2 Leoville. I think there is this trend to build up the other 2 Leoville but personally, I think it is just the wine industry trying to take wineries apart and then build them up again. I hope it works, everyone forgets/neglects LLC and the prices go down. Wine industry has to come up with new things to talk about so they have to "discover" and for years, they have given no attention to the other 2 Leovilles (which was unwarranted). Why would you not focus on Leoville Barton all those years when Anthony Barton was at the helm, only to rediscover it once he passed away? LLC is boringly magnificent all the time. But it is a bolder style of wine so needs patience and for those who like milder wines, it is an acquired taste. In my mind, there is no question about its quality and I would take it all day long vs the other 2 Leovilles. Please like, subscribe and keep watching. Cheers!

    This is another nice en interesting video about your personal wine tasting experiences. Although i am knowledgeable i appreciate the historic introduction. In this case regarding château Leóville Las-Cases. If you talk about a specific château, it can never be a bad thing to refresh the historical perspective. Assuming your resources are reliable. As an experienced wine lover, also from classical Bordeaux, i can follow your tasting note. I can imagine. If you need to take some steps, regarding the interpretation of tasting notes, tasting notes are more like a gathering of imaginative words and expressions (in some cases). For mathematical clarity and predictability, points are excellent. But to make a full character sketch of a wine, you need more than just points. Is my experience and that of many others. That has been discussed several times on this channel. For example, on paper, two wines can both have 93 points. However, there is a good chance that these wines will present themselves differently. Frankly, that is plausible considering origin, year etc. However, the total impression of the wines in points is the same. To indicate these differences i need a tasting note (and yes, they are sometimes difficult to translate into your personal situation). Because that wines are different, does not necessarily mean that one gets more points than the other. That would be far too simple. What is also important for objectivity. Is my personal opinion!
    Btw, i also think, that you waited too long to taste te LLC for the second time.
    Nevertheless, another lesson for the next time. Cheers!

    Can you tell me some of the wines that you would consider to be 98 - 100 pts? Please.

    • @TrophyWineHunter
      @TrophyWineHunter  Рік тому

      Bee: tough question as that is because I am a consumer taster, not a wine critic so I don't have to inflate scores for marketing. So if I don't find a wine I try over 95 pts for a whole year, that is OK. Think if any wine critic decided not to rate any wine over 95 points for an entire year...they would probably be fired!
      Just going through my recent notes, I rated the 2006 Le Pin 98 pts (you can see my video on it) but again, not too many wines so perhaps I am being too stingy with my ratings! Lots of 95-97 pts wines. To me, it would be pretty hard to be 100 pt wine as that may only happen 2-3 times in a lifetime. I rated the 1934 Cheval Blanc 100 pts
      I have rated the 2003 and 2005 Cheval Blanc 98 pts...perhaps it is because it is one of my favourite wines. I also rated the 1995 and 1999 Petrus 98 pts. Please like, subscribe and keep watching. Cheers!

    I know this channel is called Trophy Wine Hunter, but I'd love to see a series like Best Napa Valley Wine under $50, $100, best Merlot under $30 and such, I think everyone here would love to hear your opinions about best specific wines available for different price ranges, thank you very much!

      mehmet: thank you for viewing my video and your comment. There is another great wine UA-camr Attorney Somm that does these type of videos. For me, it doesn't really work as I am in Canada and our selection and pricing is much different. I kinda do this in my monthly updates with wine recommendations at BC Liquor stores but I am probably not the best for this as I mainly focus on higher end wines + certain regions.
      Once in awhile, when I see a screaming deal, I will note this but to be honest, the value market is not my area of expertise. Not that I don't drink value wines or I don't appreciate them...just that there are other wine UA-camrs who cover that space way better than me. Please like, subscribe and keep watching. Cheers!

      @@willhaowu Yes HDH is Hart Davis Hart. As you may know, we cannot ship wines from US to Canada. So you have to bring them back slowly. If you travel, often it is not that big an issue but it does take a bit of concentrated buying for this to work. May talk a bit more about this in future videos but for most consumers, I think the way to go is just to keep searching for old vintages in stores and then also at silent auctions at charity events. Definitely a PRECISE wine. Totally adore it. I'm having the 2017 LLC. The refinement and elegance of this, so perfumed and floral with great structure underlying it. My personal preference is for LLC, Ducru and Lalande for non-first growth wines. Palmer is abit too modern fruity and oaky for my liking.

    • @TrophyWineHunter
      @TrophyWineHunter  Рік тому +1

      Spiritchaser: thank you for your continued support. I am getting a sense of the wines you like, which are dryer in style. So I can see why you like LLC. You will probably also like Langoa Barton, Beychevelle and Montrose. Cheers!

    • @Spiritchaser93
      @Spiritchaser93 Рік тому

      @@TrophyWineHunter I need to try Beychevelle. I guess my style is old world with freshness and acidity. Unfortunately Cos Destournel did not appeal to my palette so I was hesitant on Montrose. Tastes abit too cardboard and woody imo. I think Im looking at wines with a similar price and style to the above mentioned wines plus the likes of Brane Cantenac 2016, La Conseillante 2010. Do you think I should look into St. Emilion and Pomerol more? Eg. Chateau Canon, Troplong Mondot, etc.

    • @TrophyWineHunter
      @TrophyWineHunter  Рік тому

      @@Spiritchaser93 that is weird as La Conseillante is a much more opulent style of wine than LLC (one of my favourites by the way). What do you think of Ducru Beaucaillou? Yes, you should definitely try Canon and probably Figeac. Up in price point you would love Ausone because that wine also has great structure. Cheers!

      @@TrophyWineHunter Ok so my favorite producers also include Ornellaia and Bartolo Mascarello from Italy (Bordeaux blend and Nebbiolos are my go-to). Not impressed by most Sangiovese (Chiantis/Brunellos). Also, not a fan of CDP, Burgundy, Bourjolais, and Amarones. I almost never touch New World wines as well. I guess I'm extremely picky when it comes to the producer/varietal that Im having. Opulence and finesse must be in balance imo. Right Bank wines tend to be more opulent than finesse, but La Conseillante has more restraint imo. As for Ducru, the 2016 is a top 5 wine of all time but indifferent to 2008. LLC 2017, 2018 are amazing. I believe the newer style of these 2 producers to be much more approachable and elegant when young. Anyway, I have placed an order for Figeac 2019 and Montrose 2019 to evaluate. I might also get a VCC 2019 for comparison next month. I don't believe in aging wines and if theyre good to drink young means theyre good haha.

      @@Spiritchaser93 OK...got it. VCC is a good pick. Pontet Canet would probably not be in your taste profile but Lynch Bages would be. Young is good but in my personal experience, once you have drank some older vintages, you see the charm of age on Bordeaux wines. Cheers!

    hm... 10 min of talking things CLLC which every wine lover knows and than when it comes to tasting we hear some vague statements without any meaning - and that this wine is opened "3 or 4 days ago I think"... so what is this video for? What shall we get from this???

    • @TrophyWineHunter
      @TrophyWineHunter  Рік тому +1

      fiddler on the bike: thank you for viewing my video and your comment. Wow...I actually think that most of my videos are pretty in depth and so if you think the first 10 minutes are full in information that every wine lover knows about, you are quite an wine expert!
      Then I had 8 minutes of tasting notes of not only what it tasted like when I first opened it and then what it tasted 3 days afterwards. I reviewed my tasting notes in the video and I think it was pretty specific as to what it smelled and tasted like when I first opened it, what it smelled and tasted like 3 days later and then a comparative analysis of how it compares to more modern CLLC. Is it that you do not agree with my tasting note or is there something lacking that you wanted to know about? So you thought me saying that the wine smells like dark fruit and oak and on the palate is it savory with hints of forest loam, dried cranberry, mushrooms and earthiness is vague and without meaning?
      But I do appreciate that you actually took the time to view my video and that means you wanted to see what I had to say but obviously you were not impressed with how I described the wine. I honestly would like to address whatever you would like to know about the wine since it is still fresh in my mind.
      Have you watched my other videos and do you find my description of wine in those videos also lacking? Cheers!
