    $20k seems awfully high. We had put together a quote for this a while ago and it came out to more like $8500. Still a lot of money, but much better than $20k!

      Hi! The labor alone at the dealership was 12K. Makes sense with the amount of work needed to do it. One person stated the cams have to come off. Wilderness.

      The upcoming C8 ‘vette Z06 has the exact same kind of DOHC mechanical value adjust as the NC1 NSX. GM says the new ‘vette has lifetime valve lash but I call BS on that. It’s also going to need valve adjust at around 80,000-100,000 miles. The risk is burning exhaust valves or wearing out cams and followers/swing arms.

      I read that it is a 28.3 hour billable job, not sure what an approved Acura/Honda shop charges per hour. But it looks like there are other parts needed too. $20k every 75k miles sure makes a guy think twice about buying one of these

    For the North American market NSX, there is no set maintenance schedule based on time or mileage (with 2 exceptions). Like all modern Hondas, the car uses the Maintenance Minder system, and bases the needed maintenance on the car's usage. The valve adjustment is part of Code 4, along with replacement of spark plugs and intake sound control. You do not have to adjust the valves at 75k miles if the MM code doesn't come up. Of course, because it is all based on the MM, you don't really know what the next code will be, so it's hard to plan around future maintenance. I will say that, so far, I've done all the maintenance on my NSX myself, which consists of oil and filter changes, TMU fluid replacement, brake fluid replacement, and cabin and engine filter replacement. They are all easy DIY.

    I don't think it's that bad. I'd be ok with $20k every 75k mi. But for me, it's something I would only want to do once in the lifetime of the car while I owned it. I would prefer to get a lower mileage specimen. I'd buy one with under 50k mi. If owned for ten years the engine out service works out to be $2k/year amortized.

    This cost possibly bodes well for used NSXs losing a bunch of value. 40k maintenance in 150k miles? Seems like anything nearing 75/150 might drop in price by a bunch. Also wondering how needed it is, can you wait until you hear the start of some ticking? Is this something those of us who have worked on/built engines could handle on our own? Interesting stuff.

      Would have been cool to own both a 1st and 2nd gen NSX. I had a NA2 NSX but sold it buy to my NC1. I adjusted the valves a couple time on my 99 NA2 and did belts/water pump right before I sold. Pretty easy and the engine stays in the car. Pulling the engine to do the valve adjust in the NC1 is a lot more time consuming. So far haven’t talked to or heard from anyone on social media/forums who had the value adjust on their NC1. But there ought to be plenty of high mileage, daily driven 2nd gen NSXs out there that are ready for this service.

    • @DriversTherapy
      @DriversTherapy  2 роки тому +1

      Oh no! I wouldn’t change your mind about getting one. If you buy a newer NSX like you want too, 75K miles won’t come till a decade. That is a long time and plenty of time for you to prepare. Also, when most NC1 NSXs are close to this mileage, shops will find a way to do it cheaper since this is a dealer price. I wouldn’t worry about it too much. Keep your goal for one. It is still a great car and compared to cars with similar performance, way less to expensive to own.

      I have owned a 99 NA2 NSX in addition to my 2017 NC1 (unfortunately not at the same time, I can only afford one at the time lol). The 1991-2005 NA1 and NA2 NSX has a v6 engine mounted Transverse in the engine bay behind the driver. This allows for easy access to all the timing belts and accessory belts without removing the engine. Also water pump can be changed in addition to removing both cylinder heads without removing the entire engine. Also the transmission and clutch can be replaced without removing the engine.
      On the other hand, the 2017-2022 NC1 NSX has the engine mounted Longitudinal in the engine bay. This means the crankshaft is running forwards/backwards instead of left/right in the engine bay. It’s much harder to access the engine, and the engine must be removed from the car to perform pretty much any work. Thankfully the NC1 using timing chains instead of a belt to run the Cams and water pump, and there are ZERO accessory belts because the hybrid electrification replaces the need for an engine driven alternator, AC compressor, Power Steering pump etc.
