Excellent review as usual. I bought this lens a few months ago, and it has quickly become my favorite lens for street and family photography. It is very sharp and has wonderful rendering.
Hello Dan, I’m a new subscriber to your channel. I recently purchased a used x h1 and wanting to learn more about it, searched for a book on Amazon and came across yours. I’ve purchased said book and found that you also have a channel. Well, 1st video watched tonight and will be watching more as I’m determined to find out as much as possible about this camera. I’ve also been researching which lenses to buy and have been thinking about this one. Think I’ll get now. Thanks.
Hey Mike, thanks so much for your comment, for subscribing and for buying my X Series book! I hope you find it to be a helpful resource. Let me know if you have any questions about the Fuji system. How are you liking your X-H1 and what do you like to photograph with it?
5:48 "I haven't seen any limitations to the autofocus on this lens." This is more of something I've seen with the camera, but it's about how the camera and body work. I learned this early on how different the spot and the zone selections were. I recommend spot because on the xt20, the zone does some weird things. When I do zone, it highlights like it brackets, sometimes dark, sometimes not. And the focus motor is so precise it'll lock on without hesitation to what is highlighted and you find yourself saying "man, I didn't want that!!!" I've dealt mostly with the focus on 5dmarkIV and it was like going from a toyota camry to a maserati.
Andy, you are correct. Both the camera and the lens play important roles as they work together in the whole autofocus equation. And yes, it's all about establishing an AF workflow that matches your style, your equipment and the types of subjects you like to shoot. It takes a lot of practice to figure out what works well on each different camera system, but that's all part of the process of learning and experience. FYI, I have a new Fujifilm autofocus course that covers the entire AF system on the X Series cameras and provides tips on how to get the best performance from your system. courses.danbaileyphoto.com/p/mastering-the-fujifilm-autofocus-system
@@DanBaileyPhoto thanks. yeah. i saw you mentioned that on a video and wondered where it was. Most likely I'll look into it when I get time... if I get time. Currently, I've been teaching myself the different forms of light metering by shooting at a window with curtains. So most if not all that I've learned, I've had to teach myself.
Thanks Dan. I have the 23, 35 and 50mm f2 lenses and I tend to leave the 50mm for portraits. Your video convinced me there’s a lot more to gain out of that lens and I need to open myself up to the focal length for landscape and street more. Great video and, as always, great perspective. Thanks for keeping it real and sharing your love of Fujifilm cameras. I’m still loving my 2 X-T1’s I bought this year!!
Hey Bill, thanks for your comment! Yes, definitely experiment more with the 50 and see what it can get you. Glad to hear you're still loving your X-T1's!!! Keep up the good work and take care!
Thanks Dan. Considering this small lens for portrait photography and close-ups. The flowers You have from the mountains, I have similar shots from the French Alps, very beautiful. Happy New Year to You Dan in the cold north.
Hey Erik, thanks for your comment. Happy new year to you as well! The 50 f/2 is indeed a great lens for shooting portraits and relative close up subjects. It won't really do macro, but the close focus combined with the slightly extended focal length makes it a really wonderful choice for a wide range of scenes and allowing you to capture details and intimate views.
I have the 23MM and 50MM on a XT20. Personally, I don't have much to say about it other than its a workhorse and it gives me what I envision. Love them both just for that fact alone.
Hey Andy, thanks for your comment. Those are two great lenses, indeed! Glad you're enjoying them with your X-T20, and really, that's exactly what you want from a camera/lens setup, to have the gear that successfully allows you to capture the images that you envision. What kinds of subjects do you like to shoot?
@@DanBaileyPhoto Long answer: Being a historian as an occupation, I do a ton of photographing artifacts (pretty much portrait work) for preservation and catalog. While normally, I would have preferred a larger aperture (like my canon 50mm f1.2), the fact that the objects are stationary, I can use these lenses and just prime the shutter at 1/10 or lower on a tri. For photographing objects, 2.8-4 has been my go to aperture, 2 bleaches out detail. Not at work? The local skate park. Also the Indie music scene in Indy. A lot of artists could use the imagery for marketing and I could use getting my name out there, so it's been a good marriage. A lot of these breweries, gastropubs want the imagery, so I normally get free drinks and food, for the photos. I normally shoot with Canon 5D MKIV because I like how it pairs with L lenses. However, I was in a studio during a recording and though "oh s---, I hope this doesn't pick up." So THAT is the moment I went with mirrorless for those tight situations, and it hasn't let me down.
Hi Dan, love your channel. I’ve just made what I consider to be a momentous decision. I’ve sold my XF 56mm f1.2 and am looking for the 50 f2. I’ve had this lens before and hoped that by changing to the 56, I would gain a tremendous amount in image quality. True the 56 has amazing separation of subject but I’ve looked back at shots taken with my old 50 f2 and found they really stand up. Plus it’s much smaller, faster focusing and it’s weather sealed. Living in West Yorkshire (UK), we get a fair bit of rain, fog, more rain and mist. Paired with either my excellent XT2 or XH1, the 50 f2 is a great choice.
Hey John, thanks so much for your comment. Yes, as you well know, the XF50m is such a capable little lens! Hopefully you're able to find another one very soon! What kinds of subjects do you like to shoot over there?
Hi, very inspiring and motivating video! I have just bought (yesterday) the 50mm and can't wait to play around with it. Indeed I also bought it mainly because I see it as such a versatile lens, for portraits, landscape as well as street photography. Just just simply can't beat it's size, weight, prize, built quality, AF and the pictures it produces👍👍Your love for this lens strenghtens my confidence into it that much more👌😎
Hey there, thanks for your comment. Great to hear that you got yourself a 50mm f/2, that's such an awesome little lens! I'm sure you'll have a ton of fun with it. Let me know what you think after you've had a chance to shoot with it for awhile.
I can't believe I'm just now getting this lens. Sold my Viltrox 85mm since it was so big and cumbersome with my xpro2 and get my 50 tomorrow. I mostly photograph street and portraits, can't wait to try this one out this weekend. Great review!
I've had this lens for about a month and I think it has overtaken my 55-200 as my favourite - for the time being! After a week I wasn't convinced and actually had it packed ready for a return but something made me have another go with it and I have not been disappointed - I can't believe I was going to return it. It lives on my X-T3 and is great for just about anything although I mostly use it for photos of my little girl. Another great video Dan!
Excellent review Dan. I love this lens too. It matches my eye perfectly: 50 mm on the XT1 gives me exactly what I see. It’s tight frame but works perfectly.
Hey Michael, thanks for your comment. All these years later, and I'm still a huge fan of that little 50mm f/2!! Hope you're doing well and enjoying the last few days of fall!
Thank you!!! Dan, for interesting review, I've been interested in this lens, I love the X Fuji system, actually I have XT-1 with 35mm 1.4 so I started reading your amazing book X series Unlimited, thank you very much!!!! I'm happy
Dan Bailey I love to shoot family and friends ofc, street and wildlife. I just sold my entire Sony kit and made the long waited jump to Fuji with 23 f2
Thanks for your comment, Martin. That X100V is certainly a fun little camera! I’ve been having a ton of fun with mine as well. I think you’ll really enjoy the 50 whenever you get around to using it.
Thanks Dan, always a worthwhile watch. Love your folksy, plain English approach - always so full of enthusiasm. Who wouldn't like to have Dan as their next-door neighbour?
Thanks Jim. Appreciate the feedback. 👍 I like to think that my neighbors feel the same way! They’re actually awesome neighbors, and we love having them next door to us. 😀 Hope you’re doing well and staying sane and safe right now.
David, for the most part, modern cameras and lenses will function fine at very low temperatures. I've shot with my X Series cameras down to -20 F. The focus motors can get a little sluggish, but only real problems are battery life and condensation. Having extra batteries will solve the first issue. Condensation is the bigger issue, though. If you take the camera from cold to warm (inside) without letting it gradually warm up, you'll get condensation, and if you take it back into the cold again before it has fully dried out, that moisture will freeze. If you're going from cold to warm, you need to keep your camera gear inside the bag when you go inside, especially if you plan to go back outside again soon. The cold air inside your bag will keep it from condensing, and if you're inside for a long time, it will warm up gradually inside the bag. Hope that helps. Where do you like to shoot in the wintertime?
Agree 100% it's a great little workhorse of a lens. I've owned this lens since I started using Fuji first on my X-T2 and now also on my X-T3 faultless on both. Thanks for the video Dan 😎
I’m using the X-T2 to document my life, both indoors and through travel, hiking, family vacations, etc. I’m missing that short telephoto focal length for portraits, so this seems a good fit.
@@DanBaileyPhoto I have an xt20, as I like the small form factor. I would prefer an xe-3 like with a flip screen, though, if available. I have the 18 f2, 35 f2, xf 18-55 and xc15-45 (which I mainly use as a 15mm prime). I'm looking to buy the 50 f2, as I had the 56 f1.2 and sold it due to its size and weight. I mainly use the camera on vacation and hikes, but I'm gradually starting to get more into photography. I really enjoy your videos, they are quite informative. Keep up the good work, all the best, Nick
@@DanBaileyPhoto Hi,yes i am now half year with Fuji-its my first camera, befor shooting phone only and now i have Fujifilm XT-200 in black noir color, still shooting with set lens XC15-45mm but i serching portrait lens now,in my eye its two oponents Fujinon XF50/f2(compact and WR) and Tokina ATX 56/f1.4 with amazing output and superfast AF.What you think about two lenses?Sorry for my English but i am from Europe.Bye 😀
I had a couple of Tokina lenses back in my film days, and I really liked them. I haven't tried any of their Fuji-mount lenses, but I'm sure the ATX 56mm is a good choice. I can attest that the Fuji 50mm f/2 is an amazingly fun little lens, though. Looking at the specs, it has a closer minimum focusing distance that the Tokina, and it's lighter and smaller as well, and weather sealed. However, the Tokina has a faster f/1.4 aperture. That could come in handy for certain scenes. Touch choice. In my mind, it would come down to priority of size and weather sailing, (Fuji) or faster aperture (Tokina.) Good luck!
Great review, love ye passion , keep up the good work and I’ve decided to save up for this XF50mm f/2 after seeing your superb photos with this lens... cheers matey..
Thanks for reminding me about the little 50/2 Dan. It's one of my favorite lenses, along with the 35/2. I've been carrying an X100S my last few outings because I'm enjoying that classic rangefinder package and the image quality is excellent. Plus I don't have to think about "what lens should I use?" given there is only one. ;) Best...
David, you hit the nail on the head. Not having to think about what lens to use frees up even more space in your brain for the actual creative aspects of photography. Often times, when we have choices, we agonize one which one to use, and then spend even more time wondering if we made the right decision. Where does that get us...? ;D
i dont mean to be so offtopic but does someone know of a method to get back into an instagram account?? I was stupid lost my login password. I appreciate any assistance you can offer me.
@Stanley Declan thanks so much for your reply. I found the site on google and I'm trying it out atm. Seems to take quite some time so I will get back to you later with my results.
Wow, what a fabulous photo Dan. Now I'm even more sold on it. I'm getting back into appreciating a more "normal" view after years of going ultra wide and ultra telephoto.
Thanks! I’ve experienced the same thing, Paula. In the past few years, I’ve gotten back to using these normal range lenses more often and seeing just how creative I can get with them. The close focus capabilities on the 50 really adds a lot of options!
I would concur. The 50mm is such a sweet lens. I just did a 2-day mountain bike cabin trip and along with the X100V, I only took only the 50mm f/2 on my X-T4.
hi Mr. Bailey i am from India, I realy like your reviews on Fujifilm photography. I shifted to Fuji this year got to buy a XH1 along with I bought this 50F2 wr lens...i am in love with this lil genius. I need a few advice from you, i mainly shoot portraits ,fashion and sometimes products. As i have already purchased this lens , do you suggest me to buy a 85mm 1.8 viltrox lens ? (as 90mm is very pricey) or should i buy a 23mmf2/16mm2.8 after 50mm to complete my photography focal length kit. will this 50mm focal length can cover my needs for an 85mm? plz help
Hello, thank you for your comment. The 50mm does a very nice job as a short telephoto portrait lens, so if you wanted to avoid some redundancy, then perhaps you should consider a wide angle, such as those two you mentioned, the 23 f/2 and 16 f/2.8. Both are great lenses. An 85 or 90 would also be a good choice, but again, that would mean you have two short telephoto lenses. Having a wider alternative to the 50 would offer some different creative variation.
@@DanBaileyPhoto Hi Dan, I use my 50mm for portraits when out on walks with the family on my XT3. When looking at photos on the Internet I think the output from this lens and the 90mm are my favourite. I use the 80mm more than any other for close up nature photography, it's great at this job but also heavy and very slow focusing in low light.
Dan Bailey Hi Dan, I‘m a G.A.S. Guy 😀. I‘d love my XPro2 and my X70. And yet I‘d like to test my new X100V. I want to sell my X100F. And as backup I still use a X-E3. I‘d like to photograph Architecture, Landscapes, Street ... that‘s my main interests. If you want, check out my instagram profile jbuchmann_photography.
The XF50mm f/2 was the second lens I bought after my X-T1. The first was the XF35mm f/2 that I bought with the X-T1. As you've said both are very small, light, sharp lenses.
Indeed! The 35 and 50 make s great combination! Add in a wide angle, like the 16 2.8 or the 23 f/2, and you’ve got an incredibly compact kit that covers your three focal length ranges of wide, middle, long. What do you like to shoot with your X-T1?
@@DanBaileyPhoto I have the XF23 f/2 lens as well - all three f/2's in silver. When I switched to FujiFilm mirrorless system, I want to come as close as possible to replicating my old silver full frame Pentax FA Limited 3 amigos (31mm f/1.8, 43mm f/1.9, and 77mm f/1.8). The Fujinon lenses have the bonus of auto-focusing quicker and being weather resistant.
Dan Bailey really considering returning the 35f2 for 50f2 after watching this video 🥴 Already have the 16f2.8, 23f2 and the 23 shoots close to the 35 already so the 50f2 will make up for selling the 56. Dope review!
Jae Bee, if you already have the 16 and 23, then the 50 could be a nice addition and alternative to the 56. It's certainly quite a bit smaller and lighter. The 56 is an incredible lens, but I think the 50 is just so versatile.
Thanks Dan - I’m weighing the Fuji 50mm f2 vs the Zeiss 50mm 2.8. The Zeiss Touit is not weather sealed, and one stop slower. Slightly more money too. I have the 32mm f1.8 Zeiss and I love it! Thank you for your input. I’m not sure if the decision is now easier or not! 😆
Those decisions are never easy, Tinker! 😆😂 FWIW, the price on the Fuji 50 is pretty hard to beat! I guess you can ask yourself, will the Zeiss be twice as good?
@@DanBaileyPhoto yes i got into fuji half a year ago with a x10, its a great little camera but i feel little bit limited with its lowlight capabilites and the 10mp doesn allow me much croppin...i am moving to an e x4 soon
Awesome! The X10 is a super fun little camera, and a great into into the Fuji system, but the X-E4 will offer you a huge jump in quality, performance and general shooting options. What kinds of subjects do you like to shoot?
Thanks, Paul. The cycling photos in this video that were shot in broad daylight were pretty fast, around 1/2000 sec and higher. The sunset and glacier biking images were slower, around 1/200. to 1/400 sec.
@@DanBaileyPhoto Thanks Dan. I shoot street so usually rely on my camera setting Shutter Speed but i've noticed when trying to capture bikes, it never captures at that 1/1000 + area to get them nice and crisp. I will have to try to practice quick manual change in future.
Yes, it takes a lot of practice to figure out what kinds of shutter speeds work for different subjects and effects. I usually shoot in Aperture Priority and control the shutter speed with the aperture dial. You can see how I use this method in this video: ua-cam.com/video/fX0FE6Os3dE/v-deo.html
This and the 35 f2 are just irreplaceable; close focus distance, great colour and bnw tones, small, sharp and cheap. What more can someone ask for? Great vid!
@@DanBaileyPhoto Yes, I have the xs10 and several lenses, including the 23mm and the 70-300mm. And I'm thinking of getting the 50mm f2. That's why I saw your review that you did and I'm thinking of buying it too. Can you give me some more information about the virtues of the 50mm f2? Greetings and thank you.
That's a pretty good kit, and given those two lenses, I think the 50 would fit nicely right in the middle. As I mentioned in this video, it's one of my favorite lenses, because it's tiny, very sharp, weather sealed, has extremely close focus, and it's one of of the least expensive X Series lenses. Overall, I find it great for portraits and for isolating and accentuating parts of the scene, especially subjects that are fairly close, because you can place them against a soft background and still suggest the rest of the scene. Hope that helps!
Adrain, it would not improve the weather sealing on the body itself, but having a weather sealed lens would certainly offer addition protection. It would help keep dust/moisture out of the lens.
On my four lenses this is also my favorite one. Even in landscape or street situations it brings more focus and style to the pics compared to the wide angle lenses.. It's a personal view of course..
Hi Philippe. Yes, lens use is definitely large part of the personal aspect of creative photography, but that short telephoto look of the 50 and how it isolates subjects can sure produce some amazing imagery.
@@DanBaileyPhoto Thanks for asking. Portraits and low light shots which is why i was tempted with the 56mm especially with the bokeh which i am a sucker for. However the weight of the 50mm is a big factor and the differences between the 2 lenses is negligible from what i have been seen though not in person. I won't be able to step down to 1.2 on the 56 but not the end of the world. I use the xt3 with the kit lens
Cool. And with the excellent low light performance of the X-T3 sensor, losing that little bit of light is pretty negligible, especially when you factor in the cost and weight reduction of the 50. I think you'll find it to be a very versatile lens.
Hi Dan, great review. I don’t own the 50 f2 but now I think I’m consider purchasing it. I own both the 90mm and the 80. I find the 90 the fastest focussing lens and very sharp. But I find the 80 the sharpest, so sharp that I choose not to use it for the bride’s portraits. What do you think of the 80? Take care Dan. Your videos are always a pleasure to watch.
Thanks for your comment again, appreciate the feedback. I haven’t actually used the 80 very much. It’s an excellent lens, but definitely a bit bigger and heavier, and I try to stick with the smaller, lighter glass. However, it does have OIS and macro capabilities. In terms of quality, both the 80 and 90 are incredible lenses, but they each have their strengths.
I'll probably do one of these videos about the 90 soon. It's an incredible lens! I know the 80 is awesome too, but it's one that I don't have much experience with. Do you have a favorite between those two lenses?
@@nasroullahdinally5140 Yes, that 90 is a real gem. One of, if no the sharpest lens that Fuji makes. It's world class glass. That said, the 80 can certainly come in handy for shooting closeups, and it's got stabilization, so that's nice. For me, though, I'm a huge fan of the 90, I just love the size, view angle and form factor of that lens.
Hi Dan, grat video, thanks for sharing!. I'm getting a new fuji camera and I have two options: 1) getting it with the 18-55mm f2.8-4 or 2) getting it with this lens, 50mm f2 AND the "pancake" 27mm f/2.8. In your opinion which is a better option? My main goal is getting a versatile setup, but not giving up in quality. I took a wide range of type of photos (portraits, street, landscape), but I dont care changing lenses. Thank you and once again great content!
Juan, Hmmm.... that's a tough choose. I love both the 50 and the 27, they're excellent quality, high performing lenses. The 18-55 is also a very versatile lens, but given the high performance of the 50, and the incredibly tiny size of the 27, that could be a pretty cool combination.
Awesome! That 50 f/2 is one sweet little lens. I think you'll have a lot of fun with it. What Fuji do you use and what do you like to photograph. Oswaldo?
@@DanBaileyPhoto I just got my T 30 saturday! I'm coming from a Sony 6400 and was drawn to try the Fuji system and man I'm loving it so far. I got it with the 18-55 the 35 1.4 and the 55-230 so I'm looking to get that mid range for portraits. Thanks for your info new subscriber here!
Oh. I’m an amateur Dan Bailey. I mostly shoot with my X-H1 but I also have a X-T20. I also carry XF 23 f2, 35 f2, 50 f2 and a 90 f2. I’m extremely satisfied with this combo and not afraid to go high with my ISO-setting. The IBIS in my X-H1 helps me keep the ISO a little lower when the lighting is compromised. I would really liked to get better with my street photography and I’m hoping you will teach us something in that category soon. Thank you for sharing your knowledge! 👍🏼
Daniel, that sounds like an amazing lens kit you have, and I love that they’re all primes. 👍 I don’t do much street photography per se, but my outdoor style does have a similar approach of going fast and light, and being able to see and compose quickly. Even though they’re not “street” related, you should watch my other videos to pick out techniques and ideas you can apply to your street shooting. And I have a ton of stuff on my blog about composing and shooting efficiently.
The 50/2 is on my to purchase list. Whilst everyone raves, and doubtless will continue to, about the 56 1.2, I doubt that my photography skills could extract the full amount of its potential. Similar to the 16 1.4 and 16 2.8, though 16 mm is not a focal length I would use. And, the 56 1.2 is too expensive, at least for me. Be interesting if Fuji, which it apparently refuses to do, would give some assistance to Sigma. When you look at what Sigma has done for the Sony APS-C and other brands of apsc and now, MFT, lens, seeing how the Sigma 56 1.4, which is very reasonably priced would perform on X series bodies, would be interesting. Used a Sigma 56 1.4 on a friend's Sony a6400, talk about sensational focusing ability, and was blown away with the mega fast and locked on IAF ability. As usual, a practical and sensible review from Dan.
Robert, I’m of the same mindset. I actually have the 56 1.2, and while it’s an incredible lens, I found myself not using it very often, mainly due to its added size and weight. In addition, it has slower AF, and it’s not WR. By contrast, I’m using the 50 f2 all the time. I’m just a huge fan of smaller lenses. For that reason, I don’t have the 16 1.4, but I do like the 16 2.8, and the 14 2.8, even though that lens isn’t weather sealed. Regarding Fuji and Sigma, I don’t have any official info as to why they haven’t collaborated, but I suspect it’s because Fuji is a legacy glass manufacturer, and they want to keep as much of that business close to home. Companies like Fuji make more money from lenses than cameras, and with their own success with lenses, and with the incredibly high competition in the photo industry, they probably see no reason to open that up to other companies right now. Maybe things will change as they continue to grow... who knows.
How bout the 18mm f2? You didn't mention it when you said you can't go wrong with any of the fujicrons(16,23,35,50,90). Is it a bad lens? I want to know your thoughts on the 18mm f2.
No, the 18mm f/2 is not a bad lens. It’s one of the original lenses for the X Series. I’ve used it quite a bit in all seasons, and I like it because it’s extremely small and light, and it makes great looking images. That said, it’s not quite in the same class as the lenses you mentioned, which are all weather sealed and use faster, quieter AF motors. So, overall, the 18 is very good lens that has a lot of style, but I’d love to see Fuji update this one to match the specs of their newer weather sealed primes.
Most shooters: Hmmmm , should I shoot ISO 400 or 800 Dan Bailey: ...It's an X camera, ISO who cares ! You inspire me more and more each every video Dan to push my ISO......just to see what happens.
Haha! Glad to hear that you’re enjoying my videos. 😀 Yes, definitely push your ISO and see what you get. Remember, a little bit (or a lot) of grain never hurt anyone, and it can actually look pretty cool in some situations. What Fuji do you use and what do you like to photograph?
I've had it, great lens, but i find myself using xc 50-230 more than this lens, just because of the versatility. So i sold it. It's a great little lens for prime shooters for sure.
Thanks for your comment, Erik. That 50-230 is a surprisingly good lens, and very lightweight for its range. I’ve used it a couple of times and was impressed by the results. What Fuji do you use and what do you like to photograph?
Cool. I hope that COVID has not affected your photography and creativity too. Are you able to get out with the camera and find some fun subject matter these days?
That’s a tough one. If you prefer a slightly tighter, more narrow, focused look, with your photos, then go for the 50. If you want to show a little more environment with close to mid distance subjects, and creative a look that similar to the way your eye sees, then I’d go for the 35.
Thanks for the video at the right moment. I recently sold my 56mm 1.2 and picked up the 50mm f2 for exactly half the selling price of the 56. I wasn't sure if I made the right choice, but the 56 was heavy enough to make me not pick it up when i go for a photo walk. P:S :- The transitions between cuts in the video were very distracting. I'd have preferred if you replaced the cuts with either sample images or images of the lens itself.
Thanks for your feedback. I’m constantly improving my video shooting and editing skills, and comments like yours help me get better with each one. And I feel the same way. I’ve had the 56 1.2 for years, but I found myself not using it very often, because of its added size and weight. By contrast, the little 50 goes with me almost everywhere!
Toni, they're both very good, but with extreme pixel peeping, the 56 will produce slightly sharper images across most of the aperture range. However, consider that it's a much more expensive lens. In real life use, though, the differences are pretty negligible, and when you analyze overall performance and cost, the 50 is a hard one to beat.
@@DanBaileyPhoto Ok, thanks. So I already have the 56mm but for my xt30 it is a bit large. Maybe when there is a cashback on the 50mm I will give it a try.
Thank you for your comment. Yes, this has been brought to my attention, and I just got a new microphone, so hopefully this will no longer be an issue going forward. At any rate, thanks for watching. What do you like to photograph?
@@DanBaileyPhoto About the mic, I guess something you can do in post is use the good mono track than use the whole stereo, then adjust the volume to your taste, it will help a lot even you don't change the mic. my favorite lens is 50mm equal in full frame. It work great if I only have one single lens for photo even though somewhat limit, but as now I become a video guy, then I am really thinking the combo of 35 and 85(or 100 macro), in order to have different shot, but I am still struggle a little bit now. I hope there is a XH2 can do unlimit recording, as for now, sony A7S3 really caught my attention and I am using BMPCC4K. Thanks for you reply and keep safe!
Regarding the audio, I'm experimenting with adjusting the panning of the signal, and I'll also be contacting tech support on Monday to see if the issue is inside the camera and if it can be fixed. In the meantime, I am mixing everything with headphones so that I can more accurately and clearly fix the audio in my videos until I get this fixed. Since Fuji rolled IBIS and high end video into the X-T4, I don't know if there will be and X-H2. However, all that stuff keep improving with each new generation of camera, which only works to our benefit. And yes, having a couple of different lenses, or experiment with different shooting distances and vantage points can really make a difference. I've shot a few videos with one lens, but worked hard to vary my vantage points, and it definitely adds a lot of variation.
@@DanBaileyPhoto Good luck and have fun with the audio~ About the XH2, I really hope it exist, otherwise the record limit (which can be passed by the ninja V but adds up lots of weight and the camera is micro hdmi) will push me away. But fuji truly have some nice compact lens!
It’s not your speaker. I discovered that I had slight audio imbalance issues with a few of my videos. However, going forward, the problem has been fixed. What Fuji do you use and what do you like to photograph?
My favorite Fuji wide angle is the 14 f/2.8. This was one of my very first X Series lenses, and it's seen a lot of use over the years. Extremely sharp with almost no distortion and nice, close focus capabilities. I've used the 16 f/2.8 as well, it's is a bit more compact and weather sealed. Here's my full review of the XF 14mm f/2.8: danbaileyphoto.com/blog/review-of-the-fujifilm-xf-14mm-f2-8-ultra-wide-angle-lens/
@@DanBaileyPhoto Thank you for your reply. I don’t have the 14 mm 2.8 yet.. I’ll definitely check it out! Happy New Year and I hope 2021 brings you many great (and safe) adventures!
Hi Dan, Wonderful review of Fuji's 50mm f2 lens ' me too I love this lens as well' I've been a Leica user for years as well and found the Leica 50mm f2 just a nice size and plenty fast for my usage. Cheers' 👍
@@DanBaileyPhoto For me its going to be a daily/travel documentary camera. I want to use for travel. I already have the 23mmf2WR and so have been eyeing off a 16mm f2.8 and the 50mm as you have described as I feel these focal lengths would serve well in a travel environment.
I've always found that "short telephoto" focal length to be a great companion for travel photography. The 50 f/2 fits that bill and it's just so small and compact!!!
Oh man, he's this amazing legend that all us younger guys look up to. I've been fortunate to be able to shoot with him on a few occasions. I sure do miss him, though... 💙
It all depends on your own expectations, creative ideas and tolerance for imperfection in your art. I embrace this truth because I hold to the notion that photography is not about perfect reproduction, it’s about representation, and a little bit (or a lot) of grain doesn’t have to be a bad thing. But that’s just me. 😊 At any rate, thanks for your comment. What Fuji do you use and what do you like to photograph?
@@DanBaileyPhoto XT30 and portraits, professionally. For event work like photographing flame lit moments I'm really envious of those who shoot with Sony because that's where the ISO performance is really world class. But Fuji cameras make me want to shoot. For me there's also a difference between some charming grain and the mushy vagueness of ISO 6400 and above. In personal work I wouldn't care that much but in a professional context I get that extra bit of perfectionism 😊 Thanks for the review and contribution to the community!
I can totally understand wanting to achieve the best possible results when shooting professional work, especially when it needs to satisfy someone else who may have different expectations. In our tech driven world, we can’t get away from comparisons and the notion that “image quality” alone, (whatever that means😆) sets the purveying tone. Fortunately, just about every modern sensor is capable of producing great results, even at very high ISO settings. And that keeps improving. The Fujis do an excellent job here, and as you stated, they “make you want to shoot.” In the end, a tool that inspires your creativity is the right tool for just about any job. Thanks for your insight. Keep having fun with your Fuji and your creativity. 👍
To be honest and real the 56 f1.2 is a league above 50f2 when it come to IQ. They are two different lenses for different purposes ,but when it come to portrait 56 is the way to go.
I would agree with you, they are two very different lenses. For a dedicated portrait shooter, the 56 would be the go-to choice, but for all around use, the 50 f/2 is tough to beat for quality, versatility, size, weigh and price.
That’s weird, one other person had the same issue on my last video. I specifically edited this one with headphones to make sure, and I just checked it again with headphones, and it sounds normal. I’m hearing audio on both sides. So, I’m not sure what’s going on. Could there be an issue on your end, or with your connection? Are you listening with headphones?
I've got the same problem. There is a left Audio channel on the headphones, it's just a lot lower than the right. Great video though. I have been tossing up between the 56 1.2 and 50 for a long time now. Another big tick for the 50 side! Cheers
Excellent review as usual. I bought this lens a few months ago, and it has quickly become my favorite lens for street and family photography. It is very sharp and has wonderful rendering.
Thanks for your comment. Glad you're loving the 50 f/2 so much, it's such a fun little lens!! What X Series body are you using it on?
XT3
That's a great camera. I've shot a lot of my favorite images with the X-T3. Keep having a ton of fun with it!
@ Thanks. As a stills photographer, I see no need to replace my XT3 at this time
If it ain't broke...! 😀
Thanks Dan, I’m sure I’ll be calling on you for assistance. I’ll read the book first though..👍👍
Awesome! 👍
Experimentation is one of the best ways to learn lighting, because you can adjust and see your results instantly.
This has helped me decide between the Fuji XF 50 and the 56 1.4 Viltrox. Thanks Dan.
Hi Caroline, thanks for your comment, glad to help! What Fuji do you use and what do you like to photograph?
I have the 23MM and 50MM on a XT20. Personally, I don't have much to say about it other than its a workhorse and it gives me what I envision. Love them both just for that fact alone.
Hey Andy, thanks for your comment. Those are two great lenses, indeed! Glad you're enjoying them with your X-T20, and really, that's exactly what you want from a camera/lens setup, to have the gear that successfully allows you to capture the images that you envision. What kinds of subjects do you like to shoot?
@@DanBaileyPhoto Long answer:
Being a historian as an occupation, I do a ton of photographing artifacts (pretty much portrait work) for preservation and catalog.
Andy, it sounds like you've got a great photography life. Keep having tons of fun with it!!

Thanks, Gareth. I hope you have as much fun with the little 50 as you did with your 55-200. It really is a sweet little lens! 👍
Excellent review Dan. I love this lens too. It matches my eye perfectly: 50 mm on the XT1 gives me exactly what I see. It’s tight frame but works perfectly.

Anything specific you to take pictures at those low low temperature without worrying about your gear?

Cool. The 50 will definitely help you incorporate a shallow DOF short telephoto look into your style.

I've been the owner since yesterday Tokina 56mm/1.4f 🤟

Thanks for reminding me about the little 50/2 Dan. It's one of my favorite lenses, along with the 35/2. David, you hit the nail on the head. Not having to think about what lens to use frees up even more space in your brain for the actual creative aspects of photography.
I just got a new 18mm 1.4 and believe that I just need a 50 f2 to do most of my travel shooting
I would concur. The 50mm is such a sweet lens. I just did a 2-day mountain bike cabin trip and along with the X100V, I only took only the 50mm f/2 on my X-T4.
One of Fuji’s best kept secret. Don’t tell anyone, I sold my 56mm and kept the 50mm. It’s just fabulous and oh so compact and handy.
It is indeed. That little 50 really is a special lens. Shhhhh... 😂 What Fuji do you use and what do you like to photograph?
Informative review, thank you. Great lens, best value Fuji lens by far and love the colour/micro contrast and superb sharpness.
Mark, thanks for your comment. Yes, that 50 is one of Fuji’s best value lenses! What model X Series do you use and what do you like to photograph?
@@DanBaileyPhoto Hi Dan, I use my 50mm for portraits when out on walks with the family on my XT3. When looking at photos on the Internet I think the output from this lens and the 90mm are my favourite. Will do!
Indeed! That combination of the 23, 35 and 50 make for an excellent trio of high performance glass! I'm sure you have a ton of fun with that kit!
I really enjoy the 50mm F2 as well. Thank you for the video.
Thanks Victor! 😀 Hope you’re doing well!!

Great review! Your bike photos, what Shutter Speed was used for those?

I use this with Xt20, I'm not too sure if putting the 50 f2 gives me over all-weather sealing on the camera
I recently started my photography journey, and this is my first lense paired with my XT-3!
Awesome! Have fun with your new X-T3! What do you like to photograph?
Acabo de comprar éste lente, solo a esperar resultados...
Awesome! I hope you have fun with your new lens!
The 50 it is! Thanks👊👊
You're most welcome!! The 50 is pretty awesome. What Fuji do you use and what do you like to photograph?
@@DanBaileyPhoto thank you
It is with me all the time. Thanks for a great review.
Thanks for the comment, Charles. We think alike! :D
In terms of quality, both the 80 and 90 are incredible lenses, but they each have their strengths.
i also own 80 and 90mm and i love both .
I'll probably do one of these videos about the 90 soon. It's an incredible lens! I know the 80 is awesome too, but it's one that I don't have much experience with. Do you have a favorite between those two lenses?
@@DanBaileyPhoto Hi Dan, I prefer the 90mm over the 80mm. I would use the 80 mostly for close up and macro but not for portraits.
Man 50 2.0 it is! i was on the fringe of that and the 56...! I'll take your advice!!
Awesome! Welcome to Team Fuji! You’re going to love the little 50 for portraits. And thanks for subscribing!
Wow! Very informative 👌🏼
Thanks, Daniel. Glad you found this helpful! What Fuji do you use and what do you like to photograph?
I absolutely will Dan Bailey. Thank you!
Most shooters: Hmmmm , should I shoot ISO 400 or 800
Dan Bailey: ...It's an X camera, ISO who cares !
One great lens, one great again, one great video lesson!
Thanks Bill, but I just think you like it because I put your beautiful face in the video. 😂 Hope you're doing well, brother!
@@DanBaileyPhoto currently xt2, used xt30 before, i like taking landscapes and candid people shots anywhere. :)
Cool. I hope that COVID has not affected your photography and creativity too. Are you able to get out with the camera and find some fun subject matter these days?
@@DanBaileyPhoto i live in slovakia so im able to hike every weekend and have many photographic opportunities, how about you?
Yes, I live in Alaska, so I’m able to hike and ride my bike freely and still be safe.
35mm f2 or 50mm f2? help me decide for my first prime lense 🙏😅
That’s a tough one. If you prefer a slightly tighter, more narrow, focused look, with your photos, then go for the 50. If you want to show a little more environment with close to mid distance subjects, and creative a look that similar to the way your eye sees, then I’d go for the 35.
What kinds of subjects do you like to photograph?
Dan Bailey thank you 🙏🙏
Thanks for the video at the right moment.
@@DanBaileyPhoto How is the IQ between the 50 mm and the 56mm? Any differences?
Toni, they're both very good, but with extreme pixel peeping, the 56 will produce slightly sharper images across most of the aperture range. However, consider that it's a much more expensive lens. In real life use, though, the differences are pretty negligible, and when you analyze overall performance and cost, the 50 is a hard one to beat.
@@DanBaileyPhoto Ok, thanks. So I already have the 56mm but for my xt30 it is a bit large. Maybe when there is a cashback on the 50mm I will give it a try.
Hey, just note you if you don't notice it, your audio is a little off, the left channel is muffle. Cheers
@@DanBaileyPhoto Good luck and have fun with the audio~
About the XH2, I really hope it exist, otherwise the record limit (which can be passed by the ninja V but adds up lots of weight and the camera is micro hdmi) will push me away. But fuji truly have some nice compact lens!
Is the audio bad here or is my speaker burnt?
It’s not your speaker. I discovered that I had slight audio imbalance issues with a few of my videos. However, going forward, the problem has been fixed.
What Fuji do you use and what do you like to photograph?
Which lens do you take with you as your wide angle?
Someday I'll own a 50mm F2 myself :)
Dreams come true!! 😀
Hi Dan, Wonderful review of Fuji's 50mm f2 lens ' me too I love this lens as well' I've been a Leica user for years as well and found the Leica 50mm f2 just a nice size and plenty fast for my usage. Cheers' 👍
Thanks, Mike. They really hit a sweet point with that lens design!
Отличное видео. Плохо, что мало толковых видео, русскоязычных. Приходится иностранные смотреть. )))

"ISO: who cares?" Funny yet punchy. I'll remember that.
😀
So thats 75mm on my xpro 3!!!!
Yes!!! What do you like to shoot with your Fuji?
@@DanBaileyPhoto For me its going to be a daily/travel documentary camera. I want to use for travel. I already have the 23mmf2WR and so have been eyeing off a 16mm f2.8 and the 50mm as you have described as I feel these focal lengths would serve well in a travel environment.
I've always found that "short telephoto" focal length to be a great companion for travel photography. The 50 f/2 fits that bill and it's just so small and compact!!!
One great bargain too!
Totally. It's an amazing value for how awesome this lens is!!
i shouldnt have watched this video. It made me want to buy a 50mm f2 😂
Oh darn, sorry I gave you 50mm lens envy. 😂 What Fuji do you use and what do you like to photograph?
Yeah but you have to have the ideas to make use of it.
So true... but I think that once you put it up to your eye, the ideas will come. 😀
Who was the handsome, bearded, old guy?! 😂
Oh man, he's this amazing legend that all us younger guys look up to. I've been fortunate to be able to shoot with him on a few occasions. I sure do miss him, though... 💙
"ISO who cares" - I wish that were true..
At any rate, thanks for your comment.
In personal work I wouldn't care that much but in a professional context I get that extra bit of perfectionism 😊
Thanks for the review and contribution to the community!
Make me a coffee
To be honest and real the 56 f1.2 is a league above 50f2 when it come to IQ. They are two different lenses for different purposes ,but when it come to portrait 56 is the way to go.
I would agree with you, they are two very different lenses. For a dedicated portrait shooter, the 56 would be the go-to choice, but for all around use, the 50 f/2 is tough to beat for quality, versatility, size, weigh and price.
@@DanBaileyPhoto Yep, if you need to get close or to use for e.g food shots, or " just across the street" 50 is ideal.
Indeed. I just love this focal length.
I'd love to watch your videos, but your audio is only on the right channel. Can you fix that in your next video?
That’s weird, one other person had the same issue on my last video. I specifically edited this one with headphones to make sure, and I just checked it again with headphones, and it sounds normal. I’m hearing audio on both sides. So, I’m not sure what’s going on. Could there be an issue on your end, or with your connection? Are you listening with headphones?
I've got the same problem. There is a left Audio channel on the headphones, it's just a lot lower than the right.
Great video though. I have been tossing up between the 56 1.2 and 50 for a long time now. Another big tick for the 50 side! Cheers
Thanks for letting me know, Robbie. I keep trying to diagnose, and in this latest video, I adjusted using the Surround panning tool in Final Cut Pro.
