It's truly the best way that I've seen to get a good sense of the focal length, and how close you need to get to capture certain subjects. Really great job on the rest of the review too.
Thanks a lot for your comment. Could you please help me, I'm wondering if I should buy the 35mm F2 for stills and facecam videos: 1. Is your 35mm F2 still prone to hunting while shooting videos in march 2021? In which conditions? 2. Did you find a way to solve it? Maybe the last february 2021 firmware updates correct this? Another super wee real time review of another great Fujifilm lens Roman. I have the 23mm f2 and love the lens and would love to get this 35mm as well but, kinda thinking of next purchase XH-1 as a second body to my XT-3, what do you think? Trying to avail of great deals on XH-1 at present and IBIS a bit of a pull for me, XT-4 still a lot of money and for me, just not a reality. Great vlog again mate, keep well and safe, thanks for sharing again.
I’ve literally just bought this lens after a lot of review watching/reading, and I’m looking forward to having all 3 of the so-called Fujicrons. I’ve got the 35mm 1.4 so it’ll be nice to have the choice of tiny but not so fast, and bigger but faster. I’ve gravitated towards the primes much more of late (love the 27mm Mk1) and on the X-E3 these small lenses really pack a punch but don’t take up much space. Perfect for what I shoot.
Great review with practical focus! I got an alternative hood for mine when I had an X-T20, but after I got my X-Pro2 i ended up using the original hood for minimize blockage for the OVF and eventually I grew to really like the minimal look.
Excellent and very useful review, thanks! I'm hoping to get my first mirrorless soon, probably the x-s10 with the 16-80 zoom included, might get this lens next once there are enough pennies (although I was thinking going the cheap route and getting the 15-45 kit lens! :D )
My fav fuji lens! small, quick, silence, lightweight, sharp at f2 and razor sharp beyond f4, awesome bokeh... I have never tought like, men this lack dat f1.4
Just switching to Fuji (X-T3) from full-frame Canon (5D mark 3) as I want to travel lighter. After watching your video I'm definitely thinking of buying it.
Very nice review Roman. If I’m not using the XF 16-80 on the X-T4, it’s either this lens (35mm f/2) or my latest acquisition, the XF 50 f/2. I know what purple fringing is but I never have that problem on any of the f/2 lenses (or the XF 16-80), I don't know if it’s got to do with the aperture, I shoot mostly at f/8, I have no use for blurry backgrounds or bokeh of onion shapes (Hahaha). Favorite photo #3. Stay safe.
I'm a bit confused due to crop factor... So, to be clear, your love for the 35mm lens here (which is a 50mm equivalent on full frame) is really a love for the 50mm focal length, not a love for the 35mm focal length? So 50mm (the 35mm lens) is your favorite focal length for street photography, followed by 35mm (the 23mm lens)? Context: I'm a long time full frame shooter who recently acquired my first fujifilm camera (x100f which is 23mm = 35mm equivalent on full frame) and I love it so much that I'm now considering an xs10 or xt4 for lens options.
Thank you for your usual excellent & informative review. I have a question that will apply to the 23mm lens as well. Is f2 bright enough for indoor photos (non-professional grade) for personal use I.e. recording family activities I.e. does the use of higher ISO vs. their 1.4f brothers produce results acceptable to you. Thank you in advance.
Personally I’m more comfortable with a rangefinder styled product like the xpro3 in the urban environment. I always felt like I stuck out like a sore thumb when kicking about with a DSLR.
I just had to take a screen shot of that Porsche. the one in front of that building with number 15 on each side of the door ! Sorry bro I really had to. I Love it!
About the lens hood, there is a very nice option from Fujifilm named LH-XF35-2. It clips on, fits both the 23 f2 and 35 f2 and is metal. Used to rock the plastic screw in before I found this one and this just feels so much better.
I’m wondering why people tend freely replace the original hood of particular lens by other one originally designed for wider lens and claim it perfectly ok having the same effect. From aesthetic standpoint I can get it, but technically, there is obvious optical functionality the hood is aimed for, and this is to block the stray light beams hitting the lens from the angles that are beyond lens’s field of view. So the wider is the lens, the shorter the hood will be in order to avoid blocking the usable light towards the boundaries of the particular field of view. Which means, using the hood from wider lens on a longer lens undermines the very basic optical functionality the hood is intended for. In such case the only reason to put the hood on is just some sort of mechanical protection
@pret5097 Yeah, but the one I mentioned in my comment 3 years ago is made for the XF35mm f2, which is the lens this video is about. It happens to fit to the 23 f2 aswell, and is sold for both lenses by Fujifilm, so I guess they have made it work good enough for either lens. Oh, and the original hood from the XF23 f2 is narrower than the original for the XF35mm f2, so your argument does not apply to this example. You are right in general though, that hoods for wider lenses are usually shorter and less narrow, and therefor would not do much to help decrease bounching straylight in a telephoto lens.
Hi Roman, i just ordered XT4. Let me add, this because i have become a huge fan of your walk and talk (POV) shoots in London. In Mumbai, the 35 f1.4 is actually $50 cheaper than 35 f2 so am a bit confused as to which one to buy! If budget is not a consideration, for casual portraits and street would you still recommend F2?
Hey, great video :) At the moment I have to choose between the 23f2 and this lense. Which one would you recommend for just being outside with your friends and shooting a little bit?
Thanks for the video - great stuff as always! I’ve watched your 3 reviews - 23, 35 and 50. I own 35 and use with my XPRO-3 but I find it too narrow quite often. I just ordered 23 f2. I wonder how your typical street set up looks like (knowing that you’re switching to 33 1.4) - how often and when do you switch lenses? Cheers!
Dude - I'm looking at this thinking of buying one of these lenses and I just want to say - most "here's a sample image" videos are a bit underwhelming but damn, your photos are amazing!
I pre-ordered it but then realised wtf am I doing I already have the 23 and 35 so cancelled it lol. meant to be good tho but for me not needed if im honest
1. To me, the main advantage of the 27mm pancake is that it is really light and compact. With a compact body as a X-E2-3-4 or a X-T20-30: you will forget that you're carrying a camera! It's my everyday lens with my X-T30, always on my shoulder. With the X-Pro2-3, X-T3-4 or X-H1, I think you will loose some of this advantage. 2. The field of view is almost the same as a 23mm, so you just have to make a step backwards to get the same frame. 3. The 27mm is sharp since F2.8. 4. The F2.8 won't give you as much bokeh as a F2.0 or F1.4 lens. But I think that F2.8 is decent for stills with your family and friends, or for street photography (perfect lens for that, so discreet). 5. The 27mm autofocus is quite slow and noisy, compared to the F2.0 and F1.4 lens. Especially in low light. 6. And the version 1 of the lens doesn't have aperture ring (to my this is the major flaw). 7. It's an allrounder, but if your specialized in landscape or portraits, 14-16-18mm or 35-56-90 are more suitable... Please feel free to ask if you have more questions.
For me the 35mm f2, I have the 23 but I find it to be neither tight nor close enough but that's just my opinion, I bought a manual 35mm lens for Fuji and felt right at home.
Had and sold 23mm, too wide just not for me. Got the 35 and love it! I suggest try both then decide. The person i bought the 35 from, actually prefer his 23. so diff people diff taste.
Hey! Great video. Have you used the 33mm f1.4 from tokina for fuji? Or any general comments using tokina lens on fuji - the colour reproduction, sharpness, etc?
Great video as always! So easy to watch/listen. Just for fun though, fuji actually has canned the 35 f/1 and turned it into the 50 f/1 Personally very excited for that lens!
Nice review. Would love to have this, Btw, what's the difference between the XC 35 f2 and XF 35mm f2? And a fuji x s10 with 35mm f2 lens can be a great combination for all around photography? Thank you. Appreciate your videos 👏😊
@@gessinibirad2980 A zoom will be more versatile than a prime in terms of focal length/FoV, but a "nifty fifty" equivalent like this 35mm is a classic "normal" semi-tele focal length that is plenty versatile and the main reason it's usually glued to my camera. In terms of IQ, this lens is SHARP. You will find that very closeup, macro shots will be a bit soft wide open at F2 (like the X100 series and the 23mm F2), but beyond that, its has excellent sharpness, contrast and color rendering across the frame and minimal vignetting. Some people find its optics a little "too" perfect compared to the F1.4 version, but I'm always so delighted by the images it produces. Compared to the 15-45, you'll also find the build quality is in another class and weather-sealing is very convenient. It doesn't have OIS, however, but the faster aperture will more than make up for that to allow you to shoot at higher shutter speeds in low light situations. Hope that helps!
@@larrynguyen85 thank you so so much for the information! Such a big help. My concern is if i get a 35 mm lens, would it be a big improvement or the difference just close from my 15-45 mm kit lens? Or am i just spending money for nothing? All i am after is to get great portraits but a bit wide like the 35 mm. Also, is the 35 mm f2 great for portraits of a couple? How does it compare to the f1.2? Still torn between the 2 of them. How are portraits at f2? Do i have to stop down to f2.8 to get better portraits? Thank you so much! I really appreciate it.
@@gessinibirad2980 Hi Gessini. If you are wanting to do portraiture, then yes the 35mm f2 is excellent. If you need more background/subject isolation I would look at the 35mm f1.4 or the Mitakon Zhongyi as they have faster apertures. The f1.4 is much older and slower af than the f2 and less sharp, and many say it has a very vintage and "magical" look. The f2 has very fast af, and contrast and sharpness and IQ are better, but less background separation. The Mitakon is a manual focus lens and has a very dreamy, full-frame look. There's an excellent review comparing all three here if you interested: fujilove.com/which-35mm-lens-should-you-buy-for-your-fujifilm-x-camera/ . Hope this helps!
@@larrynguyen85 thank you so much for this! Now i am leaning towards the f1.4. But Just a question for the f1.4. Does the slow autofocus affect the quality of the image? Does it make images blurry? Also, i pick the f1.4, will i be able to use face and eye detection? Because thats the one i use for portraits.
Should I get it if I already have the kit 18-55? I mean, I know the prime is smaller, has better light at 35mm and is weather resistant, but I wonder if the lens I already have won’t become useless after I buy the prime. I just got my first camera 1 week ago and it came with the kit one. Is it worth keeping both lenses if I buy the 35mm, or should I sell 18-55?
I recently switched from Sony to Fujifilm and this is my first lens. I absolutely love my x-t30 and this xf35f2 lens it's such a great setup. 😍 yeah lens hood sucks. 😂 I will definitely buy LH-XF35-2 lens hood, it's pricey for just a lens hood, but it looks so cool and it's much sturdier.
This lens is great on the street, so quick and also quiet and discreet. For your POV sections, you're holding your phone gimbal with your left hand while walking around? Or is it strapped onto you or in a shirt/jacket pocket?
Roman Fox thanks man! I’m going to be uploading my own POV photo vid with the X-T4 as well, except here from Guam. You’re one of my inspos man, love the content you’ve been making for all the Fuji heads out there 🙌
yes it should be a little sharper if you take the photo properly (especially towards the sides of the image). With f2 you'll be able to shoot indoors/night and and also get those wonderful blurred backgrounds (depending how far away your focus point is). Whether it's worth swapping or not? Hard to say....
Yes, go for it. 35 is a focal lens you can live with everyday. But I still keep my kit lens, it has a sharp wide end 15mm F3.5 and the quality is on par with the more expensive 16mm F2.8 prime.
I have the same lens! As far as your iso you keep it as low as possible? -‘d when you took photo 4 I think with the yellow sign, did you have your shutter speed a bit down to get the blurry effect?

What’s your thoughts on the pancake 27mm f2.8?
I never used the hoodat all. Actually i dont use them at all at any lens
This lens for street and general walk about photography is a Perfect fit for the X-Pro and X-E cameras.
Great video, thanks for that, I’m actually torn between the 35/2 and the 23/2 for video work as I need weather sealing. which one would you recommend?
mxx same here, having a hard time deciding between the 35/2 and the 23/2
For me the 35mm f2, I have the 23 but I find it to be neither tight nor close enough but that's just my opinion, I bought a manual 35mm lens for Fuji and felt right at home.
For video it’s almost always safer to go wider and if you shoot 4K you can crop in a bit.
don’t use the 35 for video. it’s great but the focus breathing is significant and obtrusive when trying to autofocus
Had and sold 23mm, too wide just not for me. Got the 35 and love it! I suggest try both then decide. The person i bought the 35 from, actually prefer his 23. so diff people diff taste.
I’ve got the 27mm one which is not exactly the same but the size of the 35mm is kinda deal breaker for me 😢
Hey! Great video. Have you used the 33mm f1.4 from tokina for fuji? Or any general comments using tokina lens on fuji - the colour reproduction, sharpness, etc?
very timely - thanks :-)
I'm thinking of picking one up to fit between my 10-24, 16 and 55-200
Great video as always!
So easy to watch/listen.
Just for fun though, fuji actually has canned the 35 f/1 and turned it into the 50 f/1
Personally very excited for that lens!
Do you used automatic mode when shooting at street?
How does this compare to the Fujinon XC 15-45? I'm new to cameras and just trying to figure this stuff out
So what are your thoughts on the micro-contrast of the lens?
Where can I buy the 23mm lens hood?
Is there any noise when changing the focus ring? my copy has this :(
Just on time! 🙌
Nice review! I use it on X-S10, but found that the first ring (focus), doesn’t do anything? Because the S10 is an auto-focus camera? (New to Fuji)
Really liked this review and the movie reference was absolutely bang on
Nice review. Would love to have this, Btw, what's the difference between the XC 35 f2 and XF 35mm f2? And a fuji x s10 with 35mm f2 lens can be a great combination for all around photography? Thank you. Appreciate your videos 👏😊
My favorite all-rounder lens!
Hi. Will this lens greatly improve the image quality? I have the fuji XT200 with the 15-45 kit lens. Will the fuji 35 mm be a great upgrade? Thanks!
Hi mate, is this a better option to buy mainly for the usage on portrait photos? is the f2 enough and good?
Cool, what is the wrist starp you are using here?
Should I get it if I already have the kit 18-55?
I mean, I know the prime is smaller, has better light at 35mm and is weather resistant, but I wonder if the lens I already have won’t become useless after I buy the prime. I just got my first camera 1 week ago and it came with the kit one. Is it worth keeping both lenses if I buy the 35mm, or should I sell 18-55?
The 35mm f2 was my first prime lens and it helped me to get me to a higher level in photography. (style and creativ)
Excellent, mate.
Lovely lens but i kept it for a lil bit but it was sharp enough and fast enough for me, but then I fell in love with the 50mm, i recommend it fully
Any thoughts on the XC version? Would love to know!
Would you recommend this lense if I have the 16-80 that comes with the kit?
Just ordered the xc version, not sure if I’ll enjoy a 35 so didn’t want to splash too much wonga
You’re one of my inspos man, love the content you’ve been making for all the Fuji heads out there 🙌
Hi. Will this lens greatly improve the image quality? I have the fuji XT200 with the 15-45 kit lens. Will the fuji 35 mm be a great upgrade? Thanks!
yes it should be a little sharper if you take the photo properly (especially towards the sides of the image).
@@lacinema5646 thanks
@@lacinema5646 take care! God bless!
Question what is better lens of 15-55mm or the 35mm f2
Thank you❤
do you think this lens together with the 16mm 2.8 is sharper than 16-55 2.8???
Hi thanks for such great video. What app would you recommend to remove purple fringing on iOS?
I have the same lens! As far as your iso you keep it as low as possible? -‘d when you took photo 4 I think with the yellow sign, did you have your shutter speed a bit down to get the blurry effect?
Sorry I’m trying to learn as much as I can just starting off my street photography
I just bought a 50mm f2 to shoot portrait. But i still want shallower depth of field and better bokeh
