Pro Neg Hi is my fav as of now, it creates contrasty colors in photos and it looks so so good in videos as well. Classic chrome was was favorite when I read reviews in internet and while seeing sample images. Yet to find it's purpose. looking forward to explore more!

@@DanBaileyPhoto you're certainly welcome! I've shot Fuji for 5 years, up to 2018, then I switched to Sony, like so many. After a couple years, and a detour to Nikon, I'm back with Fuji. We have a T4 for our little store but for me, I bought a E4 yesterday. Still a bit on the fence in terms of build quality and the removal of the pad, but at the same time, the screen can act like a pad with the gestures, and they're spot on, all the time! There's plenty of days this week for me to warm up to it. I mainly shoot landscapes and natural light portraits, with the occasional flower here and there. I also use a wide variety of classic lenses from the late 60's to the early 90's.
Cool. I’ve always liked the X-E models, I think they offer a lot of fun and style for the price point, and they’re certainly capable little camera. I was hesitant when they removed the thumb pad starting with the E3, but you’re right, the LCD swipe/touch gestures work pretty well. Have lots of fun with your E4!!
I’ve just come across your video Dan and have also watched your Classic Neg video as well. These are by far the best tutorials that I have seen on the Fujifilm sims yet! I have new X100VI and am loving it for street, travel and documentary photography - my go to sim is Classic Chrome as I’m a huge Kodak fan. I’m starting to love Classic Neg and Reala Ace as well. For B&W, I use Acros which works really well in blazing midday sun with high contrast.

Now I feel the necessity to upgrade to next level, something top notch. This video is the exact represention of the phrase, don't judge a book by the cover. Amazing explanation and I really respect the amount of knowledge you have about fuji's technology. It's been a year since I started using my father's X-T1 (around 5years old) and I was blown by the images and the colour it produced with the 16mp xtrans ii sensor through that film simulations. I used other reputed brands like nikon, canon, sony, kodak but by far fuji gave me the exact result I was searching for. It's flexible and versatile with the colours and the sooc result is amazing, it led me to less time infront of the desktop which I always wanted.

Yes, Photography is not about pixels, sensor size or how much processing you can do, it’s about look, feel, color, emotion, moment and having fun with your creativity. I’m glad you’re enjoying the X-T1, it really is a great camera, even though it’s an “older” model. When I look through my own images, many of my favorites were made with the X-T1, and they still hold up just fine. And as you’ve discovered, there’s something very special about the Fuji colors that inspires a certain creativity. What do you like to photograph?

I love street photography the most but I love shooting protrait, landscape, documentary and architecture too. I don't want to limit myself by doing a certain genre as I am still learning the visual language and believe that every other genre has some lessons to offer.

Hello Dan: You absolutely hit it out of the park with this demo! At 74, and a photographer my whole adult life, I experienced all of those films, one roll at a time. Your descriptions are spot-on (what memories you bring back)😃 I just got an X-H1 and have an airshow coming this weekend. I've ordered a used Xe-3 at a good price with a couple of lenses. I'm surrounded by great landscapes that I want to capture, probably using the jpegs from the camera and experimenting with the film simulations.
Cool. That 18-55 is a great all around lens, and the 12mm Samyang is an ideal ultra wide option. It's also a great lens for shooting nighttime/sky images.

Yes, there's a certain magic that the Fuji cameras and colors preserve, and that inspires a unique style of photographic creativity. Their films, and now the film sims, have been carefully designed with the mindset that color matters. Not only does it add to the individual creative style of the shooter, specific color palettes can evoke different feelings and emotions in the viewer. The specific set of color recipes included in the X Series cameras give you a wide, but limited range of recipes to tell the story in a way that matches your own feelings about the scene, or the feeling you want to impart to your audience. Hi Dan nice to see you reply , cool. What do I like to photograph ? let' see 🤔I have owed my Sony a6400 for 1 year now , and I have maybe taken 6 pictures with it 😄. I love video, A lot !!! I am obsessed with documentary films!!!! And I think that the XT4 might be the camera that I have bin looking for. Not to big but great filmic picture quality. WOW. Maybe this is a mistake , but I was looking to buy something like a sony fx9 for built in XLR , internal ND , dual base ISO and all the good thing that it offers for documentary film makers, but somehow I feel like a big camera will distract my subjects, and I wont get the true story, plus if I get a cheaper camera I will have more money left for the studio .... anyways I am exited... I am starting a series of videos where I will be experimenting different ways to break the ice between my fellow Haitian compatriots through series of interviews, deep conversations, documentaries and super nice cinematic B-roll. It's cinematic visuals with nice voice overs to encourage human reflections, hopefully it can encourage some to live better together. I will be sure to share them with you as there will be some thing that will be in english. My only worry with the XT4 is editing H265 plus I'll have to record audio externally which is awful , which is why I am also looking S1H that has an XLR module that you can attache to it.
Well said! After years of shooting raw, now i find joy in shooting jpeg and focus more on shooting than in post-production. And as you said, you don't have to show all the possible details in a picture, on the contrary it's much more interesting to choose what's important in that particular scene.

Yes, there is a special joy in being able to grab the image in the moment by using the on-board creative tools inside the camera, instead of spending lots of time post processing lately, where you're far removed from the that instant when you pulled together all of the factors that went into making the photo in first place. @@DanBaileyPhoto hi there Dan I was introduced to the Fuji camera as I needed a more compact alternative to my Nikon full frame system. I started with the X100 t with the 50mm adaptor and used it in conjunction with the Nikon at the occasional event photography I do and also family environmental and travel. I upgraded to the XE3 with f1.4 35mm and the f2 23 mm. This also works great for video, event pics and a recent trip to NZ.. I have recently been considering an In camera jpeg workflow as I love film simulation.. your photography UA-cam content definitely fits this. Being able to produce great images without the computer is definitely the way forward. Now I need to practice this!! Thanks for your help. Regards Anthony
This is better than any Fuji film simulation explanation out there. Instead of 'tweaks' to bring in all the available simulations till date. You have explained a hand picked few well. This is much better approach for hobbyist like me. I can spent more quality time and figure out how to get the best out of it.

Also on the topic of film sims, no matter what mode you use in shooting, if you shoot Raw+Jpg you can always convert in-camera and try the other film sims on the same shot and see what you like best.
Hi Jessica. Indeed, the built-in RAW Conversion feature on the Fuji cameras is definitely a great option. I think it's a really cool feature. You don't even need to shoot RAW+JPEG to use this, it still works if you shoot RAW only. In that way, you can shoot one RAW file, and then by using all the conversion settings like film simulation, highlight/shadow tone, white balance, etc..., you can can achieve any number of varying looks for that shot, right in the camera!

@@DanBaileyPhoto I just replaced an XE-1 with an XE-3. Most of the the time, I use it when I travel because of its compact size, but wished I had more time to spend on natural and urban landscapes. I have a canon slr as well, but my fuji brings back the joy I felt when I first picked up an SLR in the 80's.
I have had your book & have enjoyed learning how to use the Film Simulations. I really learned a lot from your photos showing which ones to use for various light conditions. Love the all the color options!

@@DanBaileyPhoto Dan, I ended up buying the XT-30 when I had intended on buying the XT-3. But at the camera store I tried both and much preferred the XT-30 and have never regretted it. It's more compact, I love the dials (instead of always using the menu), and it has exactly the same megapixels and processor. I like to photograph everything: daily life, my pets, life at the marina, family, the garden, local events, and such. But landscape is something I find I enjoy seeing though not photographing.
That's great to hear. Yes, the X-T30 is such a great little camera. And you're right, it has the exact same image quality and overall performance as the X-T3, but with a distinctly smaller form factor and lighter weight body. Its fun to experiment with the camera, and there's something about having one you really like that inspires to you look at the world a little different and pay attention to things you might not have notice before, even if you're not trying to photograph them. Have fun with it!!

Thanks, Dan, taken me some time to look at it. I like B and White, so no prizes for guessing what colour simulation I choose for that. I tend to set up my camera ( XT 20 and XT2) before I go out, certainly as I tend to shoot in Aperture priority only. Yes, have read that only amateurs ( yes, nobody has yet to pay for any of my flat, boring snapshots) shoot in anything but manual. We can all differ. Used Fuji film until the move to digital. Like the colour film, choices and my default setting is Provia. Thanks for your tips.

I'm soon getting an XT4 and this helps a lot for when I'm going to be shooting Jpeg! When shooting raw, Proneg STD looks great! And wow. Acros looks great for when I'll be doing low light photography!

@@DanBaileyPhoto Depends on the situation. If i'm shooting wildlife or landscape. Velvia. Portrait work tends to be somewhat of a guess-show with pro neg an classic chrome. I've done two senior photo shoots recently (nobody ever told me today's senior portraits are a fall set and a spring set... things have changed since I've been in high school) and I the majority of my "keepers, no need to go to lightroom" shots were from pro neg. A standard set-up is Chrome, Pro-neg hi and sepia (sp?). Often times I'll shoot in jpeg plus raw, then if I like a shot, keep it... if I am close, but needing a touch-up, I have a raw to work with. I shot a concert Friday in Classic Chrome, and then raw and I ended up keeping a ton of the chrome jpegs w/o having to put them through lightroom.
Makes sense. I just did some informal prom pics for my niece and her friends, and used Pro Neg Std. They came out great That film sim is always a great choice for portraits. Same. I often find that most of the time, the straight JPEGs end up being the keepers. And even with JPEGs, you can still do some minor adjustments in LR to give them a little bit more life. It's only when I'm faced with exceptional contrast that I switch to RAW+JPEG.
@@DanBaileyPhoto I'm not a portrait photographer and this was really a favor to my boss (you know, the kind of person you don't say no to). Now I got SUPER LUCKY for someone who'd never shot portraits. She was a trained ballet dancer and a homecoming queen (my boss is the chair for the homecoming committee) so I basically told the lady I was photographing ,"just do what you normally do." Actually one of my best photos was taken using their advance filter setting. OK, picture the XT20, and then turn the far left dial to advance 1.
Haha!! Sounds just like me!! I'm not a "portrait" photographer per se, and this past weekend with my niece, I got roped in quickly for those pre-homecoming photos before they left for the dance, since I had a "fancy" camera with me. 😂 Fortunately, I hardly have to do anything. I just had my X-T5 with the Xf35mm f/2 lens, and I told them to stand in front of wall, and I shot about 20 photos while they struck fun poses all on their own. I just pressed the button, transferred the photos to my phone and AirDrop'ed them to my niece. Success!!
Perfect video Dan. Exactly what I was looking for. In depth knowledge of the film simulations. Also looking for someone who has knowledge about the white balance color shift which is such a powerful feature, but hard to refine.
@@DanBaileyPhoto I’ve experimented with white balance color shift and different film sims, but it’s a bit hard to know which color compliment each other also taking account the subtle colors in the scene. Lots of variables and subtle options. Also, making radical color changes linking them to different moods. It would be nice to have an in depth conversation about this very interesting topic.
@@DanBaileyPhoto Also, I saw this perfect blue color used in Chanels perfume Bleu, when i was in Paris. I tried to replicate it on my fuji xpro3 using monochrome film sim with color shift option but was difficult to get an exact match. A very special blue tint indeed, with a touch of black and maybe purple.
@@DanBaileyPhoto Also you have the DR settings in addition to the color chrome effects to take into consideration. Takes lots of practice to find your own unique style, but that’s also what i love about my fuji; the color science
Dan...thank you for your comprehensive explanation of Fuji film simulations. It is the most helpful discussion of what each simulation is and how you utilize to coax the fullest expression of what you want your viewer to take away from an image. As someone who used fuji film stock in the past as well as Kodak and Agfa, I can appreciate what Fujifilm has produced in these simulations. One can always equivocate about the actual film fidelity of Fujifilm simulations, but to my eye, it is spot on and comes closer to the array of film look of any camera manufacturer. It opens up new possibilities for creative expression in the way Jazz music does...it's not always about the notes played. I shoot with my Fuji XH-1, Leica Q, and Sigma DP2 &3 Merrills--these cameras make me want to create images.

I like your take on the subject, the creative expression with photography is not about the specific notes you play, but how you play them. There's an infinite amount of variation you could potentially use to represent your subject matter with a photograph, and Fuji's Film Sims offer a diverse, but concise set of brushes and colors with which to express your creative ideas. What do you like to shoot?
This most detailed pictures taken by me were with an AU$60 OM2 and 50 1.4, yes no image stabilisation in those days, and using Kodachrome 64 ASA. The colour and detail that film captured were unbelievable. In one picture I took lying on the ground of one of farm cows staring down at me, the shot captured her is such detail that a large blow-up almost shows every single hair of her smooth summer coat.
Robert, I shot K25 and 64 on a regular basis back in the early 90s and loved the looks I got. K25 was without a doubt the sharpest, finest grain slide film ever made. If you use fujifilm I’d definitely recommend you use captureone for processing. It’s designed for Fuji sensor files and the raw files will keep the simulations you pick in camera. That way you can keep your simulation on the raw file and tweak if you want, without losing image quality like a jpeg would. You can also change to different simulations IN POST if you use capture one, on the raw file. There’s a drop down on capture one to change the simulations that are also on your camera, It’s amazing. Velvia is fine for street, I use it all the time, remember David Alan Harvey shot people in Cuba on velvia 50 slide film.
Excellent insight, Nicholas, and thanks for your comment. Capture One Pro is indeed a very good program, and an excellent choice for editing Fuji RAW files. While their film simulations are not 100% exact match for the originals, they're pretty close and WAY better than Adobe's versions. And good point about David Alan Harvey. There are no rules. You can shoot whatever you want with whatever color profile or look you want, as long as you follow your creative heart and know the characteristics and limitations of what you're shooting. Thanks for this awesome breakdown of the film simulation modes! Also your quote, "photography is about compelling subject matter, good light, and the right moment" is an amazing reminder of what are we fundamentally doing. Recent (1-year) X-T3 owner here. I like to do landscape, street, long-exposure, and astro photography. I typically shoot in raw, and post-process in Lightroom, but you've inspired to experiment with how to get the best straight out of camera results.

@@DanBaileyPhoto I just bought the X100V Dan, I also shoot a Nikon D750 and D810 so the Fuji is a welcome downsize. With the Fuji I like to shoot street, landscapes and general travel photography. For my professional work I shoot events, portraits, landscapes, product etc. with the Nikons. Loving shooting jpegs sooc with very minimal editing if any at all. I also shoot 35mm film, I love that as well.
That X100V is a really fun camera! I got one about a year ago and have loved every minute with it. And I've long been a convert with regards to shooting mostly in JPEG these days. The photos right out of the camera are amazing on the Fujis. And the colors... ohhh the colors!! 😀

@@DanBaileyPhoto I don't currently have a Fuji, but I'm on the probably infinite waiting list for an X100V, since I don't want to pay scalper prices. Otherwise I shoot and do video with a Canon R6. But having grown up with film, I've been lured into the Fuji spell and want experiment with these profiles. If I can't get my hands on an X100V I may pull the trigger on an X-T4 because it seems to be the only one still in stock that has a similar UI. Any advice? What's your regular shooter?
Thomas, I have a number of the X Series bodies, including an X-T4 and the X100V. I do love them both, but the X-T4 is a more powerful camera that offers a few more creative and performance options and of course, the versatility of interchangeable lenses. The simplicity of the X100 is nice, but if I had to choose between the two, the X-T4 would definitely win out. All of the X Series cameras essentially have the same UI and menu system, and nearly identical settings, although some have a few more options than others. What kinds of subjects do you like to shoot?

I'm a musician and will be doing some gigs soon and imagined this as my BTS camera and photo journal of sorts. I think a body with an interchangeable lens could work if the lens was small enough and if I could still the voice that wants to "collect 'em all", haha. I don't need to recreate my Canon lens collection in a new system, if you get my drift. But a body with a prime was something I was considering, like the X-e4, but they are also scarce...

Nice explanation. Today I nearly bought an old x100 just because of their film simulation. I did not pull the trigger as I am very happy with my Ricoh GR ii color rendition and with olympus bodies and lenses (I do also like Olympus colour). For me I prefer to be shooting or editing books but do not enjoy too much tweaking or retouching. Keep the nice job!

Your explanation goes far and above the manual. It was the film simulation modes which I found a selling point on an X-T30. The Acros simulation is great and have been playing with it to get some dramatic images of the sky (red filter plus CPL) and it really is a throwback to film days with the pleasant addition of the EVF giving you an visualization. Very impressive, but still more to explore.

@@DanBaileyPhoto thank you for the reply. I like photographing architecture, landscapes and night scenes. I think the Velvia may be interesting with nighttime city lighting. There are also countless Buddhist temples where I live and their colors are vivid so a fascinating exercise would be to see how each film simulation represents them. I am also a big fan of B&W and like using a deep red filter with CPL filter to create dramatic scenery. That has worked well in Acros R (Yellow does too, but a little less dramatic) Thankfully, I don't need to carry around the all the filters I did when shooting film. I am finding the size of the X-T30 to be just right and I can slip it in a backpack when I go bicycling. As you stated, try out the different simulations in time and see what does or does not work. It's another fun way to be creative.
I think Velvia would be good for nighttime shots, given how well it renders shadows, and one of the lower contrast sims might be good as well, to open up the shadows with a blue cast. And I know from experience that Velvia does look awesome when shooting Buddhist temples and things like prayer flags. 👍 Have fun with it!!

@@DanBaileyPhoto I went with the holy trinity of GFX 20-35, 45-100 and 100-200. Going from full frame Canon 5DSR to mirrorless med format, I decided to bite the bullet and go all the way. I am selling one of my canon bodies and two lenses and keeping a canon body plus a 100-400 for occasional wild life. Since seeing your video, I am already playing with film simulations.
That sounds like an excellent and very versatile combination. Funny, the huge sensor GFX is actually smaller and lighter than some of the bigger full frame cameras and comparable lenses. Have fun with it and let me know what you get!

@@DanBaileyPhoto Yes, but I am disappointed with IBIS on it (so positively commented on You Tube) I shot "walking videos" on both Fuji S10 and Canon 6d mark 2 and Canon produces way more stable video although with lower resolution. IBIS on Fuji when walking is not good, based on my experience. (shot in 4K)
@@Greggiexplore Sorry to hear. I don't have any experience with IBIS on other cameras, so I don't know how the Fujis compare to other brands. I've been impressed with the IBIS on the X-T4, and the in theory, the X-S10 has the same system.
Hi Dan - I bought an xt-20 back in 2018 after trading in my Nikon d300 and lots of lenses as I had a young family and never got the ‘big camera’ out anymore. However, I ended up just using my iphone as still had a young family, and even the little Fuji seemed a hassle to get out - now they’re all a bit older, I am so happy I still have the Fuji and have dusted it off and am getting to know it again! I like shooting my rural surroundings and would like to document life more. I have the basic 16-50 kit lens which I love, as well as the xf35 1.4 and just got the cheapy ttartisans 23mm pancake, so am having a lot of fun. I did not realise when I got the camera that shooting jpg would give me such great photos without the hassle of post editing, hence I found your video on simulations, which was super helpful! Sorry for the essay! I’m off to buy your Fuji guide as think that will speed up my learning curve - thanks again! 😊

Thank you for making this video. I had no idea there is a reason for using each film, as each has its own purpose really. I can see now how important it is is to pick the right one. Also, what you said about grain, I totally agree and embrace actually in the digital era where I try to mimic sometimes grain in my low iso photos.

Mark, Fuji's monochrome sims are excellent! I seldom shot BW back in my slide film days, but with my Fuji cameras I shoot in monochrome quite often and love the results!

I sold a Nikon D750 with 35 1.4 and 85 1.4 lenses after I decided weddings aren’t for me and so far am extremely impressed with the fujifilm!

I'vs had a X100s for years, LOVE it and Recently bought a Xt1 really cheap so I can use it with vintage and some Zeiss lenses I have. Good presentation! Don’t see too much written about the simulation settings. My experience with Fuji film from way was that it was better for Asia, and that Kodak was better for Europe. The greens in particular were good for Japan where I live, while the yellows were better for London and the northerly latitudes. With my XT-2 , I tend to use Privis most of the time, use Velvia if I shoot flowers or when the contrast is low. On the other hand, Astia mutes the strong mid-day contrasts colors. Never tried much the other settings, but your clip has inspired me. Interesting about getting the old T- max look. Personally, I always loved, Tri-X.
Thanks, Peter. Glad to hear that my video has inspired you to experiment a little more with the film simulations. There are so many possible creative looks between all of the different color profiles and the infinite variations of light. Add in the Highlight/Shadow/Color controls in the Q Menu and you have even more possibilities. I'll do a video lesson about that soon.

Awesome, Julia! The Film Simulations were the very first thing that drew me to the X Series almost 10 years ago. I used Fuji slide film for years, and so it was a triumphant return for me to being able to shoot with those colors again that were so integral to my creative development as a photographer. I feel that the film sims are the lifeblood of the Fuji cameras, and they offer so much creative potential when you get a handle on how they can be used to create different looks and evoke different modes in your photos, especially when you start to tweak them a little but and come up with your own custom looks.
Great video Dan. You just manage to describe what I have felt when I switched to XT3. I was always a Nikon guy, starting back in the times where film cameras were the only option. My first choice of negatives were always Fuji films and with the simulations I feel like I finally manage to get that spark in the photos.
Sebastian, thanks for the comment, I'm glad you liked this video. I think a lot of photographers are experiencing the same thing, especially those of us who started with film. We grew up with this limited array of looks that we worked into our style, and now we're able to return to those color palettes as we move forward with our digital photography.

Dan, I couldn't agree more with everything you said. I'm thrilled to find another Astia preacher, and who thinks that Classic Chrome is basically black and white in colors. I loved the examples photos you showed to illustrate each of the film simulations. It really brings out good examples on which one fits the various circumstances that you can encounter.
@@DanBaileyPhoto My main passion has always been street and travel, for its pure capture of life as it is ! I'm much more of a capturer of moments rather of poses. Might be due to my former career in 2D animation, which lasted 15 years, so I do have a specific fondness for movement and dynamism. But since none of these are paying nowadays (at least, a (not so) young gun (anymore) like me), the next best thing is event photography, where I do a little bit of everything, (live gigs, artistic spectacles, birthdays and anniversaries, conferences, parties, weddings, etc). As for my Fuji gears, there's a story behind it. After 15 years of sitting in front of a computer, drawing animation everyday for 20 hours a day, without weekends or holidays, I had a massive burnout and decided to drop animation altogether, coz I needed to get back to life ! And what art needs you to get out and meet people and make your art ? Photography ! Since it was also one of my big passions besides animation, I decided to take the plunge and get a "real" camera, thing I've been dying to get for at least a good decade. So armed with my newly acquired 600D, later replaced by a 60D, I was very much originally a Canon shooter for a little more than a year and half. I was very satisfied with my 2nd hand 60D, and a gradually bigger amount of lenses, both primes and zoom, that covered quite a good amount of focal lengths. Until the fateful day my 60D died in my hands after a year and a bazillion of pics. Pondering if I should repair it or buy another camera, I noticed an article that was praising the little fairly unknown (at the time) Fuji X-T10. Intrigued, I decided to try getting one with its 18-55mm (2nd hand again), and boy ! Was I blown away ! The colors, the sharpness, the ISO handling in low light (much better than the 60D) the small factor and lightness of it all (I liked to hold my 60D with one hand only, which, after one year, was starting to damage my right backhand's nerves whenever I had a big lens on the camera, to the point I was thinking about stopping doing photography altogether) ; so you can imagine getting such a small and lightweight, one-hand-do-it-all camera+lens (on top of its wonderful manual dials) was an absolute great news, and pure delight for me to shoot with (and gone were the nerves pains). Long story short, ever since that time, I got bitten by the Fuji bug, and after my X-T10 died on me after a year (again... the joys of 2nd hand), I got myself successively over the same year a X-T20, a X-H1, and a last but not least, a X-T3, with quite a good collection of lenses again : 18-55, of course, but also 2 of the 3 fujicrons f2, the great 23 and 35, the fantastic 16mm f1.4, then some third party lenses : a 12mm and 55mm f1.4 from 7artisans, cheap and pretty damn good and well built (all metal) for their low prices (although don't use them in rain, it messes up their focus rings permanently) ; the legendary Mitakon 35mm f0.98, absolutely fantastic) ; on top of a few vintage Nikon lenses with an adapter (35mm f2.8, and the famed "Afghan Girl" 105mm f2.5, which is just stellar !). I also used to own a Fuji 18-135mm (useful, but not the best IQ, although the OIS worked wonders) and a 16-55mm f2.8 (one of the best lenses I've ever used in my life, but GODDAMIT was it heavy (both physically and pricily !). I ended up selling them coz I needed cash for my current trip to my hometown Brussels in Belgium... Where I just found a job as ... an animator in an animation studio ! Life sometimes has some weird sense of humour to throw you like that in a big loop that can last a few years... So there you have it. A few last words to finish this note that's been eroding your eyes until now (sorry for this, there's more coming...) : I believe having worked for so long in animation also definitely shaped my vision as a photographer. Having studied movements and composition for such a long period of time definitely trains the eye for photography, which in turns also taught me the importance of lights and shadows for the mood of the shot. Besides, having worked in both arts, I also saw a curious link between them. You could almost call them the 2 sides of a same coin, or the ying and yang of the arts in general : One is all about starting from scratch (a blank sheet of paper), and creating dozens, hundreds, thousands, hundreds of thousands drawings depicting movement on it, in order to make people believe they're seeing a character who's alive onscreen ! While the other is all about taking life in movement as usual, and capture just one fraction of the present time (which immediately becomes the past), which will stay still until the ends of time (or at least, until the photography got corrupted). These 2 arts are the 2 main arts created by mankind to play with time to each extreme : One creates movement (thus life) from nothing, with a vast amount of frames, ;the other takes life and stops it completely down to one single frame. Once I figured that out, I felt a newfound respect for both arts, and am no grateful to be able to work in both of them. Thank you for your reading (your eyes must be smoking, right now).

@@DanBaileyPhoto you're certainly welcome! I've shot Fuji for 5 years, up to 2018, then I switched to Sony, like so many. After a couple years, and a detour to Nikon, I'm back with Fuji. We have a T4 for our little store but for me, I bought a E4 yesterday. Still a bit on the fence in terms of build quality and the removal of the pad, but at the same time, the screen can act like a pad with the gestures, and they're spot on, all the time! There's plenty of days this week for me to warm up to it. I mainly shoot landscapes and natural light portraits, with the occasional flower here and there. I also use a wide variety of classic lenses from the late 60's to the early 90's.
Cool. I’ve always liked the X-E models, I think they offer a lot of fun and style for the price point, and they’re certainly capable little camera. I was hesitant when they removed the thumb pad starting with the E3, but you’re right, the LCD swipe/touch gestures work pretty well. Have lots of fun with your E4!!
I’ve just come across your video Dan and have also watched your Classic Neg video as well. These are by far the best tutorials that I have seen on the Fujifilm sims yet! I have new X100VI and am loving it for street, travel and documentary photography - my go to sim is Classic Chrome as I’m a huge Kodak fan. I’m starting to love Classic Neg and Reala Ace as well. For B&W, I use Acros which works really well in blazing midday sun with high contrast.

I'm a hobbyist, and using Fujifilm S100fs bridge camera since 2010, it serves good results for landscapes, macros and fair results for portraits. Now I feel the necessity to upgrade to next level, something top notch. My interests Bird/wildlife, family portraits.. plus a wide lens for UA-cam video for my daughter, vlog and hopefully this same lens for wide angle landscape..

This video is the exact represention of the phrase, don't judge a book by the cover. Amazing explanation and I really respect the amount of knowledge you have about fuji's technology. It's been a year since I started using my father's X-T1 (around 5years old) and I was blown by the images and the colour it produced with the 16mp xtrans ii sensor through that film simulations. I used other reputed brands like nikon, canon, sony, kodak but by far fuji gave me the exact result I was searching for. It's flexible and versatile with the colours and the sooc result is amazing, it led me to less time infront of the desktop which I always wanted.

Yes, Photography is not about pixels, sensor size or how much processing you can do, it’s about look, feel, color, emotion, moment and having fun with your creativity. I’m glad you’re enjoying the X-T1, it really is a great camera, even though it’s an “older” model. When I look through my own images, many of my favorites were made with the X-T1, and they still hold up just fine. And as you’ve discovered, there’s something very special about the Fuji colors that inspires a certain creativity. What do you like to photograph?
@@DanBaileyPhoto Yes, I absolutely agree with your words, it's bit older but it does the job just fine and I am more than satisfied with what fuji has provided and still providing. I love street photography the most but I love shooting protrait, landscape, documentary and architecture too. I don't want to limit myself by doing a certain genre as I am still learning the visual language and believe that every other genre has some lessons to offer.

I’ve only taken the camera out a couple of times but so far I seem to switch between Velvia, Classic Chrome and Astra Soft. I’ve installed a few recipes from Fuji weekly last night so will try them too.

Hello Dan: You absolutely hit it out of the park with this demo! At 74, and a photographer my whole adult life, I experienced all of those films, one roll at a time. Your descriptions are spot-on (what memories you bring back)😃 I just got an X-H1 and have an airshow coming this weekend. I've ordered a used Xe-3 at a good price with a couple of lenses. I'm surrounded by great landscapes that I want to capture, probably using the jpegs from the camera and experimenting with the film simulations.

Cool. That 18-55 is a great all around lens, and the 12mm Samyang is an ideal ultra wide option. It's also a great lens for shooting nighttime/sky images.

Their films, and now the film sims, have been carefully designed with the mindset that color matters. Not only does it add to the individual creative style of the shooter, specific color palettes can evoke different feelings and emotions in the viewer. The specific set of color recipes included in the X Series cameras give you a wide, but limited range of recipes to tell the story in a way that matches your own feelings about the scene, or the feeling you want to impart to your audience.

I love video, A lot !!! I am obsessed with documentary films!!!! And I think that the XT4 might be the camera that I have bin looking for. Not to big but great filmic picture quality. WOW. Maybe this is a mistake , but I was looking to buy something like a sony fx9 for built in XLR , internal ND , dual base ISO and all the good thing that it offers for documentary film makers, but somehow I feel like a big camera will distract my subjects, and I wont get the true story, plus if I get a cheaper camera I will have more money left for the studio .... anyways I am exited...
I am starting a series of videos where I will be experimenting different ways to break the ice between my fellow Haitian compatriots through series of interviews, deep conversations, documentaries and super nice cinematic B-roll. It's cinematic visuals with nice voice overs to encourage human reflections, hopefully it can encourage some to live better together. I will be sure to share them with you as there will be some thing that will be in english.
My only worry with the XT4 is editing H265 plus I'll have to record audio externally which is awful , which is why I am also looking S1H that has an XLR module that you can attache to it.
Well said! After years of shooting raw, now i find joy in shooting jpeg and focus more on shooting than in post-production. And as you said, you don't have to show all the possible details in a picture, on the contrary it's much more interesting to choose what's important in that particular scene.

Yes, there is a special joy in being able to grab the image in the moment by using the on-board creative tools inside the camera, instead of spending lots of time post processing lately, where you're far removed from the that instant when you pulled together all of the factors that went into making the photo in first place. @@DanBaileyPhoto hi there Dan I was introduced to the Fuji camera as I needed a more compact alternative to my Nikon full frame system. I started with the X100 t with the 50mm adaptor and used it in conjunction with the Nikon at the occasional event photography I do and also family environmental and travel. I upgraded to the XE3 with f1.4 35mm and the f2 23 mm. This also works great for video, event pics and a recent trip to NZ.. I have recently been considering an In camera jpeg workflow as I love film simulation.. your photography UA-cam content definitely fits this. Being able to produce great images without the computer is definitely the way forward. Now I need to practice this!!

This is better than any Fuji film simulation explanation out there. Instead of 'tweaks' to bring in all the available simulations till date. You have explained a hand picked few well. This is much better approach for hobbyist like me. I can spent more quality time and figure out how to get the best out of it.

Also on the topic of film sims, no matter what mode you use in shooting, if you shoot Raw+Jpg you can always convert in-camera and try the other film sims on the same shot and see what you like best.
Hi Jessica. Indeed, the built-in RAW Conversion feature on the Fuji cameras is definitely a great option. I think it's a really cool feature. You don't even need to shoot RAW+JPEG to use this, it still works if you shoot RAW only. In that way, you can shoot one RAW file, and then by using all the conversion settings like film simulation, highlight/shadow tone, white balance, etc..., you can can achieve any number of varying looks for that shot, right in the camera!

@@DanBaileyPhoto I just replaced an XE-1 with an XE-3. Most of the the time, I use it when I travel because of its compact size, but wished I had more time to spend on natural and urban landscapes. I have a canon slr as well, but my fuji brings back the joy I felt when I first picked up an SLR in the 80's.
I have had your book & have enjoyed learning how to use the Film Simulations. I really learned a lot from your photos showing which ones to use for various light conditions. Love the all the color options!

@@DanBaileyPhoto Dan, I ended up buying the XT-30 when I had intended on buying the XT-3. But at the camera store I tried both and much preferred the XT-30 and have never regretted it. It's more compact, I love the dials (instead of always using the menu), and it has exactly the same megapixels and processor. I like to photograph everything: daily life, my pets, life at the marina, family, the garden, local events, and such. But landscape is something I find I enjoy seeing though not photographing.
That's great to hear. Yes, the X-T30 is such a great little camera. And you're right, it has the exact same image quality and overall performance as the X-T3, but with a distinctly smaller form factor and lighter weight body. Its fun to experiment with the camera, and there's something about having one you really like that inspires to you look at the world a little different and pay attention to things you might not have notice before, even if you're not trying to photograph them. Have fun with it!!

Thanks, Dan, taken me some time to look at it. I like B and White, so no prizes for guessing what colour simulation I choose for that. I tend to set up my camera ( XT 20 and XT2) before I go out, certainly as I tend to shoot in Aperture priority only. Yes, have read that only amateurs ( yes, nobody has yet to pay for any of my flat, boring snapshots) shoot in anything but manual. We can all differ.
Used Fuji film until the move to digital.
Like the colour film, choices and my default setting is Provia.

@@DanBaileyPhoto Depends on the situation. If i'm shooting wildlife or landscape. Velvia. Portrait work tends to be somewhat of a guess-show with pro neg an classic chrome.
I've done two senior photo shoots recently (nobody ever told me today's senior portraits are a fall set and a spring set... things have changed since I've been in high school) and I the majority of my "keepers, no need to go to lightroom" shots were from pro neg.
A standard set-up is Chrome, Pro-neg hi and sepia (sp?). Often times I'll shoot in jpeg plus raw, then if I like a shot, keep it... if I am close, but needing a touch-up, I have a raw to work with.
I shot a concert Friday in Classic Chrome, and then raw and I ended up keeping a ton of the chrome jpegs w/o having to put them through lightroom.
Makes sense. I just did some informal prom pics for my niece and her friends, and used Pro Neg Std. They came out great That film sim is always a great choice for portraits.
Same. I often find that most of the time, the straight JPEGs end up being the keepers. And even with JPEGs, you can still do some minor adjustments in LR to give them a little bit more life. It's only when I'm faced with exceptional contrast that I switch to RAW+JPEG.
@@DanBaileyPhoto I'm not a portrait photographer and this was really a favor to my boss (you know, the kind of person you don't say no to).
Now I got SUPER LUCKY for someone who'd never shot portraits. She was a trained ballet dancer and a homecoming queen (my boss is the chair for the homecoming committee) so I basically told the lady I was photographing ,"just do what you normally do."
Actually one of my best photos was taken using their advance filter setting. OK, picture the XT20, and then turn the far left dial to advance 1.
Haha!! Sounds just like me!! I'm not a "portrait" photographer per se, and this past weekend with my niece, I got roped in quickly for those pre-homecoming photos before they left for the dance, since I had a "fancy" camera with me. 😂
Fortunately, I hardly have to do anything. I just had my X-T5 with the Xf35mm f/2 lens, and I told them to stand in front of wall, and I shot about 20 photos while they struck fun poses all on their own. I just pressed the button, transferred the photos to my phone and AirDrop'ed them to my niece. Success!!

@@DanBaileyPhoto I’ve experimented with white balance color shift and different film sims, but it’s a bit hard to know which color compliment each other also taking account the subtle colors in the scene. Lots of variables and subtle options. Also, making radical color changes linking them to different moods. It would be nice to have an in depth conversation about this very interesting topic.
@@DanBaileyPhoto Also, I saw this perfect blue color used in Chanels perfume Bleu, when i was in Paris. I tried to replicate it on my fuji xpro3 using monochrome film sim with color shift option but was difficult to get an exact match. A very special blue tint indeed, with a touch of black and maybe purple.
@@DanBaileyPhoto Also you have the DR settings in addition to the color chrome effects to take into consideration. Takes lots of practice to find your own unique style, but that’s also what i love about my fuji; the color science

Dan...thank you for your comprehensive explanation of Fuji film simulations. It is the most helpful discussion of what each simulation is and how you utilize to coax the fullest expression of what you want your viewer to take away from an image. As someone who used fuji film stock in the past as well as Kodak and Agfa, I can appreciate what Fujifilm has produced in these simulations. One can always equivocate about the actual film fidelity of Fujifilm simulations, but to my eye, it is spot on and comes closer to the array of film look of any camera manufacturer. It opens up new possibilities for creative expression in the way Jazz music does...it's not always about the notes played. I shoot with my Fuji XH-1, Leica Q, and Sigma DP2 &3 Merrills--these cameras make me want to create images.

I like your take on the subject, the creative expression with photography is not about the specific notes you play, but how you play them. There's an infinite amount of variation you could potentially use to represent your subject matter with a photograph, and Fuji's Film Sims offer a diverse, but concise set of brushes and colors with which to express your creative ideas. This most detailed pictures taken by me were with an AU$60 OM2 and 50 1.4, yes no image stabilisation in those days, and using Kodachrome 64 ASA. The colour and detail that film captured were unbelievable. In one picture I took lying on the ground of one of farm cows staring down at me, the shot captured her is such detail that a large blow-up almost shows every single hair of her smooth summer coat.
Robert, I shot K25 and 64 on a regular basis back in the early 90s and loved the looks I got. K25 was without a doubt the sharpest, finest grain slide film ever made. If you use fujifilm I’d definitely recommend you use captureone for processing. It’s designed for Fuji sensor files and the raw files will keep the simulations you pick in camera. That way you can keep your simulation on the raw file and tweak if you want, without losing image quality like a jpeg would. You can also change to different simulations IN POST if you use capture one, on the raw file. There’s a drop down on capture one to change the simulations that are also on your camera, It’s amazing.
Velvia is fine for street, I use it all the time, remember David Alan Harvey shot people in Cuba on velvia 50 slide film.
Excellent insight, Nicholas, and thanks for your comment. Capture One Pro is indeed a very good program, and an excellent choice for editing Fuji RAW files. While their film simulations are not 100% exact match for the originals, they're pretty close and WAY better than Adobe's versions. And good point about David Alan Harvey. There are no rules. You can shoot whatever you want with whatever color profile or look you want, as long as you follow your creative heart and know the characteristics and limitations of what you're shooting.

Thanks for this awesome breakdown of the film simulation modes! Also your quote, "photography is about compelling subject matter, good light, and the right moment" is an amazing reminder of what are we fundamentally doing. Recent (1-year) X-T3 owner here. I like to do landscape, street, long-exposure, and astro photography. I typically shoot in raw, and post-process in Lightroom, but you've inspired to experiment with how to get the best straight out of camera results.

@@DanBaileyPhoto I just bought the X100V Dan, I also shoot a Nikon D750 and D810 so the Fuji is a welcome downsize. With the Fuji I like to shoot street, landscapes and general travel photography. For my professional work I shoot events, portraits, landscapes, product etc. with the Nikons. Loving shooting jpegs sooc with very minimal editing if any at all. I also shoot 35mm film, I love that as well.

@@DanBaileyPhoto I don't currently have a Fuji, but I'm on the probably infinite waiting list for an X100V, since I don't want to pay scalper prices. Otherwise I shoot and do video with a Canon R6. But having grown up with film, I've been lured into the Fuji spell and want experiment with these profiles. If I can't get my hands on an X100V I may pull the trigger on an X-T4 because it seems to be the only one still in stock that has a similar UI. Any advice? What's your regular shooter?
Thomas, I have a number of the X Series bodies, including an X-T4 and the X100V. I do love them both, but the X-T4 is a more powerful camera that offers a few more creative and performance options and of course, the versatility of interchangeable lenses. The simplicity of the X100 is nice, but if I had to choose between the two, the X-T4 would definitely win out. All of the X Series cameras essentially have the same UI and menu system, and nearly identical settings, although some have a few more options than others. What kinds of subjects do you like to shoot?
@@DanBaileyPhoto That's great insight, Dan. It will be my knock-around, carry with me me, camera, so size is definitely a major factor. I'm a musician and will be doing some gigs soon and imagined this as my BTS camera and photo journal of sorts. I think a body with an interchangeable lens could work if the lens was small enough and if I could still the voice that wants to "collect 'em all", haha. I don't need to recreate my Canon lens collection in a new system, if you get my drift. But a body with a prime was something I was considering, like the X-e4, but they are also scarce...
@@DanBaileyPhoto So I guess the question is, do you think an X-T4 paired with a smaller lens makes a decent every day shooter? Or would it end up being too bulky? And what lens pairing would you recommend. The in-body stabilization is also luring because I would be taking advantage of the video offerings, but then we're getting muddled. I might try the Fuji film sims and think I don't need them for video, or I might actually do the opposite and find them invaluable for B-roll and found footage...

Nice explanation. Today I nearly bought an old x100 just because of their film simulation. I did not pull the trigger as I am very happy with my Ricoh GR ii color rendition and with olympus bodies and lenses (I do also like Olympus colour). For me I prefer to be shooting or editing books but do not enjoy too much tweaking or retouching. Keep the nice job!

Your explanation goes far and above the manual. It was the film simulation modes which I found a selling point on an X-T30. The Acros simulation is great and have been playing with it to get some dramatic images of the sky (red filter plus CPL) and it really is a throwback to film days with the pleasant addition of the EVF giving you an visualization. Very impressive, but still more to explore.

@@DanBaileyPhoto thank you for the reply. I like photographing architecture, landscapes and night scenes. I think the Velvia may be interesting with nighttime city lighting. There are also countless Buddhist temples where I live and their colors are vivid so a fascinating exercise would be to see how each film simulation represents them.
I am also a big fan of B&W and like using a deep red filter with CPL filter to create dramatic scenery. That has worked well in Acros R (Yellow does too, but a little less dramatic) Thankfully, I don't need to carry around the all the filters I did when shooting film. I am finding the size of the X-T30 to be just right and I can slip it in a backpack when I go bicycling. As you stated, try out the different simulations in time and see what does or does not work. It's another fun way to be creative.
I think Velvia would be good for nighttime shots, given how well it renders shadows, and one of the lower contrast sims might be good as well, to open up the shadows with a blue cast. And I know from experience that Velvia does look awesome when shooting Buddhist temples and things like prayer flags. 👍 Have fun with it!!

@@DanBaileyPhoto I went with the holy trinity of GFX 20-35, 45-100 and 100-200. Going from full frame Canon 5DSR to mirrorless med format, I decided to bite the bullet and go all the way. I am selling one of my canon bodies and two lenses and keeping a canon body plus a 100-400 for occasional wild life. Since seeing your video, I am already playing with film simulations.
That sounds like an excellent and very versatile combination. Funny, the huge sensor GFX is actually smaller and lighter than some of the bigger full frame cameras and comparable lenses. Have fun with it and let me know what you get!

@@DanBaileyPhoto Yes, but I am disappointed with IBIS on it (so positively commented on You Tube) I shot "walking videos" on both Fuji S10 and Canon 6d mark 2 and Canon produces way more stable video although with lower resolution. IBIS on Fuji when walking is not good, based on my experience. (shot in 4K)
@@Greggiexplore Sorry to hear. I don't have any experience with IBIS on other cameras, so I don't know how the Fujis compare to other brands. I've been impressed with the IBIS on the X-T4, and the in theory, the X-S10 has the same system.

Hi Dan - I bought an xt-20 back in 2018 after trading in my Nikon d300 and lots of lenses as I had a young family and never got the ‘big camera’ out anymore. However, I ended up just using my iphone as still had a young family, and even the little Fuji seemed a hassle to get out - now they’re all a bit older, I am so happy I still have the Fuji and have dusted it off and am getting to know it again! I like shooting my rural surroundings and would like to document life more. I have the basic 16-50 kit lens which I love, as well as the xf35 1.4 and just got the cheapy ttartisans 23mm pancake, so am having a lot of fun. I did not realise when I got the camera that shooting jpg would give me such great photos without the hassle of post editing, hence I found your video on simulations, which was super helpful! Sorry for the essay! I’m off to buy your Fuji guide as think that will speed up my learning curve - thanks again! 😊

Thank you for making this video. I had no idea there is a reason for using each film, as each has its own purpose really. I can see now how important it is is to pick the right one. Also, what you said about grain, I totally agree and embrace actually in the digital era where I try to mimic sometimes grain in my low iso photos.

I liken this to music, where slight imperfections in things like tempo, phrasing and articulation of the notes is what makes a piece more authentic and personal.

I sold a Nikon D750 with 35 1.4 and 85 1.4 lenses after I decided weddings aren’t for me and so far am extremely impressed with the fujifilm!

I'vs had a X100s for years, LOVE it and Recently bought a Xt1 really cheap so I can use it with vintage and some Zeiss lenses I have. Good presentation! Don’t see too much written about the simulation settings. My experience with Fuji film from way was that it was better for Asia, and that Kodak was better for Europe. The greens in particular were good for Japan where I live, while the yellows were better for London and the northerly latitudes. With my XT-2 , I tend to use Privis most of the time, use Velvia if I shoot flowers or when the contrast is low. On the other hand, Astia mutes the strong mid-day contrasts colors. Never tried much the other settings, but your clip has inspired me. Interesting about getting the old T- max look. Personally, I always loved, Tri-X.

There are so many possible creative looks between all of the different color profiles and the infinite variations of light. Add in the Highlight/Shadow/Color controls in the Q Menu and you have even more possibilities. I'll do a video lesson about that soon.

Awesome, Julia! The Film Simulations were the very first thing that drew me to the X Series almost 10 years ago. I used Fuji slide film for years, and so it was a triumphant return for me to being able to shoot with those colors again that were so integral to my creative development as a photographer. I feel that the film sims are the lifeblood of the Fuji cameras, and they offer so much creative potential when you get a handle on how they can be used to create different looks and evoke different modes in your photos, especially when you start to tweak them a little but and come up with your own custom looks.
Great video Dan. You just manage to describe what I have felt when I switched to XT3. I was always a Nikon guy, starting back in the times where film cameras were the only option. My first choice of negatives were always Fuji films and with the simulations I feel like I finally manage to get that spark in the photos.

@@DanBaileyPhoto My main passion has always been street and travel, for its pure capture of life as it is ! I'm much more of a capturer of moments rather of poses. Might be due to my former career in 2D animation, which lasted 15 years, so I do have a specific fondness for movement and dynamism.
But since none of these are paying nowadays (at least, a (not so) young gun (anymore) like me), the next best thing is event photography, where I do a little bit of everything, (live gigs, artistic spectacles, birthdays and anniversaries, conferences, parties, weddings, etc).
As for my Fuji gears, there's a story behind it.
After 15 years of sitting in front of a computer, drawing animation everyday for 20 hours a day, without weekends or holidays, I had a massive burnout and decided to drop animation altogether, coz I needed to get back to life ! And what art needs you to get out and meet people and make your art ? Photography !
Since it was also one of my big passions besides animation, I decided to take the plunge and get a "real" camera, thing I've been dying to get for at least a good decade.
So armed with my newly acquired 600D, later replaced by a 60D, I was very much originally a Canon shooter for a little more than a year and half. I was very satisfied with my 2nd hand 60D, and a gradually bigger amount of lenses, both primes and zoom, that covered quite a good amount of focal lengths.
Until the fateful day my 60D died in my hands after a year and a bazillion of pics.
Pondering if I should repair it or buy another camera, I noticed an article that was praising the little fairly unknown (at the time) Fuji X-T10.
Intrigued, I decided to try getting one with its 18-55mm (2nd hand again), and boy ! Was I blown away !
The colors, the sharpness, the ISO handling in low light (much better than the 60D) the small factor and lightness of it all (I liked to hold my 60D with one hand only, which, after one year, was starting to damage my right backhand's nerves whenever I had a big lens on the camera, to the point I was thinking about stopping doing photography altogether) ; so you can imagine getting such a small and lightweight, one-hand-do-it-all camera+lens (on top of its wonderful manual dials) was an absolute great news, and pure delight for me to shoot with (and gone were the nerves pains).
Long story short, ever since that time, I got bitten by the Fuji bug, and after my X-T10 died on me after a year (again... the joys of 2nd hand), I got myself successively over the same year a X-T20, a X-H1, and a last but not least, a X-T3, with quite a good collection of lenses again : 18-55, of course, but also 2 of the 3 fujicrons f2, the great 23 and 35, the fantastic 16mm f1.4, then some third party lenses : a 12mm and 55mm f1.4 from 7artisans, cheap and pretty damn good and well built (all metal) for their low prices (although don't use them in rain, it messes up their focus rings permanently) ; the legendary Mitakon 35mm f0.98, absolutely fantastic) ; on top of a few vintage Nikon lenses with an adapter (35mm f2.8, and the famed "Afghan Girl" 105mm f2.5, which is just stellar !).
I also used to own a Fuji 18-135mm (useful, but not the best IQ, although the OIS worked wonders) and a 16-55mm f2.8 (one of the best lenses I've ever used in my life, but GODDAMIT was it heavy (both physically and pricily !). I ended up selling them coz I needed cash for my current trip to my hometown Brussels in Belgium... Where I just found a job as ... an animator in an animation studio !
Life sometimes has some weird sense of humour to throw you like that in a big loop that can last a few years...
So there you have it.
A few last words to finish this note that's been eroding your eyes until now (sorry for this, there's more coming...) :
I believe having worked for so long in animation also definitely shaped my vision as a photographer.
Having studied movements and composition for such a long period of time definitely trains the eye for photography, which in turns also taught me the importance of lights and shadows for the mood of the shot.
Besides, having worked in both arts, I also saw a curious link between them. You could almost call them the 2 sides of a same coin, or the ying and yang of the arts in general : One is all about starting from scratch (a blank sheet of paper), and creating dozens, hundreds, thousands, hundreds of thousands drawings depicting movement on it, in order to make people believe they're seeing a character who's alive onscreen !
While the other is all about taking life in movement as usual, and capture just one fraction of the present time (which immediately becomes the past), which will stay still until the ends of time (or at least, until the photography got corrupted).
These 2 arts are the 2 main arts created by mankind to play with time to each extreme : One creates movement (thus life) from nothing, with a vast amount of frames, ;the other takes life and stops it completely down to one single frame.
Once I figured that out, I felt a newfound respect for both arts, and am no grateful to be able to work in both of them.
