Can I Pass Every Melbourne Train Station in One Day? (Melbourne Railway Vlog 229)
Вставка
- Опубліковано 7 лют 2025
- 211 train stations, 15 train lines, but only 24 hours to go through every one on Melbourne's incredibly spread out and often unreliable rail network. Join us as we hastily explore the whole network, including seeing progress on level crossing removals and SRL!
This would be a challenge on any day, but my friend and I picked one where one of the legs required a replacement bus, adding even more time! We didn't know it, but there would also be a global IT outage!
We excluded the Stony Point and Flemington Racecourse lines, because both were not running on the day that we attempted the challenge (also, the Stony Point line is only a Metro service by technicality). We also allowed passing a station, rather than insisting that the train/replacement bus stops at every station, because it would have been unreasonable to do half of the Frankston line stopping all stations on a replacement bus - the limited express service we took already added a sizeable chunk of time!
A big thank you to my friend Nic whose idea it was to do the challenge! It was a much more enjoyable outing with him!

4:12 props to you for going to Dandenong station at like 6am, you a real trooper
Hahahaha. I got rewarded with a lovely sunrise
6am is fine, 6PM is the problem
I drive the 901 bus and can definitely verify 6am at Dandenong is far nicer than 6pm!!!! 😂
Lmao dandenong is fine
that feeling of pride when they go down your local line🤩
Really well done! I don't think anyone has ever done the challenge and documented it to this extent.
Interesting observation about the overhead gantries going from double to single south of Alamein. They were put there after the line closed, just to carry the feeder cables - that section was never actually electrified. Maybe they had some plans to reopen that bit? I agree it would be great to have that connection today.
Thanks mate. That's really interesting that they put the cables in after the line closed, but still did it in such a similar style to railway overhead wiring. It certainly fooled me!
I'm a very big fan of your channel. It's such a privilege having a person like you make such interesting, high quality videos about the Melbourne network, of all train networks!
@@melbournerailwayvideos Thankyou, glad you've been enjoying the videos!
@@melbournerailwayvideos Maybe the rail overheads were redundant rail structures and repurposed by SEC for a High Voltage Feeder.
Get to know the difference between HV and LV grid aerials and HV rail aerial wiring. Hint: street grid has 3 - 4 cables... rail has 1.
Interesting insight. I knew the cables looked different, but the stanchions definitely look railway-like!
@@melbournerailwayvideos Yeah, past rail use. They are not street or grid poles. If they carry any street lighting each fitting would require isolation transformers as a safety separation from rail HV supply to street LV circuits, if a stanchion came down. These are largish steel boxes mounted on the structure.
Someone else mentioned some of those aerials tie between the two rail lines, probably for dual redundancy to feed sections of the lines if an outage occurs. It's probably only manually switched in when needed.
I revisited the video and see Rail HV 1kV DC (1 only insulator disc) strung something like panto lines (but not serviceable for that) and 3phase HV AC (possibly 2.2kV, being multiple stacked insulator discs) vertically arranged.
Not to brag, but I live in Adelaide. I can get up at 10am, visit every train station, every bus stop, every tram stop, say hello to every resident in the state, and be back home at 12pm in time for lunch.
As an Adelaidian, this is valid.
...besides the 10 minute PT delays for *everything*
Bro I woke up at 6 and couldn’t finish by 8pm :(
Is there anything good to eat for lunch in Adelaide?
We can do that in our country cities too!
This here is what making the most out of your fare looks like
Hahahah you bet!
Perfect use of $10!
AYYYEE WHAT A CHALLENGE THIS WAS (I'm not watching all of this because I lived it and don't want to relive it)
19 hours was definitely enough!
Train coordinator: Sir, where are you travelling with metro today?
This guy: I-I can explain
Hahahaha
Classic 901 moment. It was like that every time when I went to Epping SC.
Yeah, it's so irritating. It has happened to me many times before this too!
901 driver here . . . Gotta have a toilet stop occasionally and Sth Morang station is one of the most convenient 😊 (plus our timing points at Kurrak Rd Frankston bound or Epping Station Airport bound are both quite generous!)
Congratulations!
Just completed this, stopping at all 220 stations yesterday.
Definitely an experience!
Wowwww! Very impressive that you actually stopped at all of them. What was your time?
This is commitment to ptv.
You bet, banana man
Love how you’ve bagged Richmond and Essendon in this video bahahaha elite stuff all of this
They smell like equine urine.
:(
This is my favourite video of the year! I’ve thought about doing this more than once after watching Geoff Marshall do the tube challenge. Not the order I would have done the lines but I can’t fault your success. And any video with that much shade thrown at the Bombers is great in my book haha
Thanks! I hope you give it a go too and let me know if you can beat my effort. I'm sure it can be done!
This was such an entertaining video! Excellent work! I've often thought of just doing one line for fun, not sure if I could handle the whole network but it would be fun to try. Metro should run a charity day where teams race each other to see who can complete the network the quickest. I don't know how'd it work but that'd be absolute madness haha
I love the sound of a day where heaps of people do the challenge! It might give Metro an incentive to run a better service...
I was literally wondering if this was possible just a few days ago! The stars have aligned, you absolute mad lad!
Well done guys! Me and a friend did this in July 2002, starting and ending at Flinders St (something like 0450 to 2356), using just trains and going up and back each line. We had to skip Watergardens because we got a very smart person to work out the schedule, and then Watergardens opened, and it would have been a zero-minute turnaround.
The lines were: Werribee, Williamstown, Keilor Plains, Broadmeadows, Upfield (11am or so), Epping, Hurstbridge, Lilydale, Belgrave, Alamein, Pakenham, Cranbourne, Frankston, Sandringham, Glen Waverley. Then I took the last train home to Newmarket! I would have been happy never to have caught another train that night…
I was pretty tired of trains by the end of the day, but we had friends join us here and there, and one time a friend delayed a train at Parliament so we had time to change. Like most of my train adventures I didn’t document it ☹️
It would be impossible to do this way now with the line extensions unless you used night trains. The London Tube all stations model incorporating buses and walking makes it more viable and at the end of the day you might be very slightly less sick of trains 😀
I'm amazed that you were able to do all that in one day using trains alone! I didn't even think it was possible to get anywhere near that far on just trains!
@@melbournerailwayvideos It was a really tight thing-the Watergardens extension made it difficult and the Craigieburn extension made it impossible. _Maybe_ you could do it on a Friday or Saturday with night trains, but it would require more stamina than I have, haha.
Its always cool to see other people coming to my station, especially because as you said, Sunbury is quite a ride out of the city
385 from mernda, but before it turns onto yan yean road jump off and change too the 381 to diamond creek is even quicker, you can catch the pervious 381 bus that already left mernda like 15 minutes before the 385
That's some great local knowledge!
Upon my research you could have flown from Melbourne to Cairo in that time, I know that's not the point, but something interesting to consider. You have yourself a new subscriber.
Great point! I could have seen the pyramids!
Very wise having someone else with you along the journey 👍
Indeed. Good for safety, and my sanity!
I’m fairly sure that this record will be the first and last of its kind due to it most likely becoming the only attempt with East Pakenham but before opening of the metro tunnel
Hahahaha I didn't think of that. Another level of winning by default!
@@melbournerailwayvideosNope. EVERY Vic station was done in 48 hours, about 15 years ago. Your rules look similar to that teams. The video should still be on yt somewhere.
@@PiDsPagePrototypes 15 years ago wouldn't include east pakenham though ;)
@@francoisvankempen Sure, but recall, "EVERY Victorian Station", not just Metro, but V-Line as well. So dropping a line that wasn't built then, isn't really going to make much of a difference to the total number of stations passed.
When is the metro tunnel complete?
Keon Park is my favourite as I get ideas on how to decorate my bedroom.
Lol 😂
Craigieburn mentioned (Massive achievement, great stuff mate!)
RAHHHHHHH 🦅🦅🦅🦅🦅
Awesome really enjoyed the trip and well done Nick keeping you company and all that running 🚂
Thanks!
Woah thats nuts, you'll have yo do it again when the SRL and the Metro tunnel are aroud. This time no busses 😅
SRL will make things a lot easier if it ever gets built!
@@melbournerailwayvideosYup, a radial network like Melbourne is a difficult obstacle for this challenge
Watched all of this! Great vid mate very interesting
Thanks so much
Wow , big effort , well done chaps 😊 .
Suspense palpable! Loved it 😊
Cheers Owen
I remember doing this in the 1960s with 2 friends. We got to Flinders Street Station and then went on the Dandenong Line and BACK. Then we went on the St Kilda Line and BACK. A few more and then went home.
I wish I could have included the St Kilda line in this challenge. Light rail just isn't the same :(
@@melbournerailwayvideos
Yes I agree. And the Railway Bridge out of Flinders Street still stands. Maybe another story.??
Already laughing with them at the mention of the IT outage right at the start, absolutely nothing could go wrong. Lmfao the proof of stopping at East Richmond.
Great video. Enjoyed start to finish. Got me thinking now!
Super interesting video! Well done. Thanks for taking one for the team and doing this challenge. I know I would not have the patience or stamina to do it myself!
Cheers Emily :)
i love videos like this and i wish there was more like this on australian public transport channels
Thanks! Yeah I'd love to see something similar done in another city too!
This is an amazing challenge that I would love to tackle in the future
Tried this today. I took the bus from Glen Waverly - Nunawading which saved some time and I was trying to take the bus link from Upfield to Craigieburn when night works on Cburn line screwed it up. You guys are still the record holders.
I think half the challenge is just finding a day when there aren't any disruptions. Good on you for trying though!
You passed me that day! I was at Burwood Station around the same time you were!
This is genuinely awesome, congrats!
Thanks so much!
Great job and great friend u have that went along with u
Been transporting for all my life ... I enjoyed it yeah day tripper 🤗😁🌞👍
Glad you did!
I loved watching it! Good work on passing every station
Epic video. and you did it on the worse day with that IT outage. Props!
Hahaha yeah definitely not ideal! Thanks :)
It's interesting that you were able to do it starting at Upfield, given that the first service there is later than some other lines. Nice effort.
This randomly came up and I thought interesting, never expected to enjoy it as much as I did. Great effort!
Also Jacana, the blink and you’d miss it station 😆
Great, glad you enjoyed it!
So cool watching this, my main train stations are east Malvern and Alamein so it was really cool watching you walk past all of my local places. 👍🏽
It's a lovely local area that you have!
Bro, that invincible track is my favourite. Great video man
Thanks mate
Good Work at passing through all the stations!!
Thanks!
Truly amazing, as much as I am a rail fan doing something like this is impossible for me. your dedication is truly unmatched!
Hahaha. You never know...
Nicely done! As someone who’s tried to take the bus from Mernda to Hurtsbridge once, the bus ended up very late resulting in an 45 minute delay so perhaps it’s a good thing you went back to South Morang
Buses are so inconsistent like that!
Now that's I call getting value from a daily ticket!
This is impressive. Well done 👏
This was done in the 70's, and yes it is possible.
Nice work dude. I got a challenge for you. Take a selfy under the station name on every station on the Melbourne network and see how fast you can do it.
That'd be a good variant. It would take a lot longer than 24 hours though I reckon. I'll think about it...
Next challenge: visit the site of every VR station that ever existed in one week(excluding rail-motor stopping places, those now located on private property, etc)
Probably impossible
Maybe visit every v/line station
I'll pay that effort! Always wondered if that was even possible!!
Absolute legends.
The global IT outage… I was a computer technician working that day over in the US. Many companies here were hit hard, including wheee I worked. Many transit systems went down too.
"ess v adelaide not really a block buster"
Turns out to be one of the games of the year
Hahaha yeah. I couldn't have been more wrong!
This was a fun challenge 👍 Jolly good show matey @melbournerailwayvideos This seems like something I ought to try at some point 😂
Never knew that section of the gardeners creek used to be a train line. No wonder it’s sooooooo smoooooth
ur criminally underrated brother
Thanks mate. Love your support!
Well done for completing the challenge! Great video!
Cool video. Ive actually visited every Melbourne train station a few years ago except Flemington racecourse station. I took photos and put them on an Instagram account for Melbourne train stations. Now im trying to visit stations thats been rebuilt due to level crossing removal. Right now im waiting for the new Metro tunnel to open.
Thanks! Yeah it's great fun exploring all the stations
Amazing, congratulations! The London Underground record is 18 hours 8 minutes: I reckon you can beat it
I think they're a lot more organised and meticulous in their planning over there, but I might have to give it a crack next time I go!
@@melbournerailwayvideos Oh for sure, London folks got time and money, but don’t get me wrong, this is fantastic
This is epic, I might try beat this somehow
You should! I reckon it's doable
wait this is so iconic
Visiting from Adelaide (I rode on all lines there). The only Melbourne based line I rode on was the Belgrave line in 1994 on a Hitachi on the way down and then a Comeng back to Melbourne. Back then it was the green and yellow Met colours.
22:22 The 381 bus from Mernda to Diamond Creek is probably the quickest way. It does take about 50 minutes but it’s pretty consistent and saves a lot of time.
Very useful to know
I love this video thank you so much it even has some nostalgic ncs un it and it's really fun to see
You doing challenges like this
Cool video and aside comments.
So, I guess I should appreciate the fact I live along the Belgrave line and use it at Tecoma frequently... it has the nice aesthetic. I do understand one can do a lot worse than live up in the Hills. 😉 I didn't realise the Xtrap trains we have hold a rock 'n roll reputation... after all, they are the only trains I've used in Melb.
It was remiss at Belgrave to not follow the line on foot under the road bridge and see the narrow gauge 'Puffing Billy' alignment... instead headed up to Tourist Town. I'm over living in a Tourist Town with tourist services focus.
Amazing challenge, good on you, I saw some body did the same thing on Sydney s Metro,I wonder how many others have attempted similar challenges in other parts of the world Awesome keep up the good work, like your video s
An epic trip. Well done! 👍
Really enjoyed this thanks I love the shhhh sounds of the trains relaxing
5:50 that's the new frankston hospital being built back there.
Sees a kangaroo, Welcome to Mernda… MUUUURRRRNDA. For over half of the video, you took x’traps. Hope your legs still work! I reckon I wanna do this myself! From MUUURRRRNDA, the 381 but goes to Diamonds creek station, I take it from school to Mernda. I’d’ve taken 381, then train to hurstbridge.
Legends
This video is great bro, keep it up!
Thank you :)
Great commitment
Cheers mate
i feel like there definitely needs to be a leaderboard on this challenge
Yeah for sure! I hope some other people who've done it watch this video and comment their times.
What a challenge! Great job 👍
Cheers!
Insanity. But bloody awesome insanity!
Hahahaha
I was on your glen Waverley train lol
I watched the whole vid, well done mate
Thanks so much!
Well done guys interesting video ❤
Great video man one idea I had in mind i doing this but only using buses to get to each station in Victoria
I’m so much of a train fan
Correction the overhead wires Connect the Alamein line up to the electrical substation at East Malvern and the Outer circle was closed in the 1890s early 1890s, in fact way before electrification
That makes so much sense! It's just funny that they have done it in the style of railway line stanchions.
@@melbournerailwayvideos even if they did extend it back just before the freeway, then you interchange over that overpass
@@melbournerailwayvideos yea they should do it more often on like rail trails where they should imbed rails into the path or add overhead wiring structures like onthe inner circle and make people feel like they’re on an old rail alignment
Great video! Now subscribed!
Thanks!
12:00 Gardiner's Creek always looks like that. It's kinda similar to the Yarra, not necessarily polluted, that's just its colour.
Well done
Here we goooooo….
Fun video. FYI if its on plat 3 at Lav it has to go via the loop on the up. no points across to the mainline
That's a great fact, but also a pretty stupid arrangement.
all Vline next!! i don't think it's actually possible tho lmao
Last week I went to a primary school for work experience. And guess what I have seen on 5/6 Maths classes? Timetables, with application as "working out a route to reach every single train station in Melbourne in a day". Do not ask me how much pain it took to let kids understand how to minimise time...
Hahaha wow! I would have loved that activity when I was in grade 5/6!
Bloody champion. Good on you. 👏👏👏
Thanks mate
Thanks for the video. Very interesting.
Cheers
Belgrave Line is the one I use. I agree that as the line goes past Ferntree Gully up into the Dandenongs the scenery is really nice. My favourites are Upper Ferntree Gully, Tecoma, Upwey and Belgrave Stations. However some of your vlogs on the bayside Stations have inspired me to check them out also.
You should! They're great stations
newest model of the wooden spoon is crazyyy
I'm glad someone got it!
regarding your comment at 35:00 about getting off at sunbury, i've heard of people still getting fines for getting off at sunbury after coming in from footscray/southern cross. it really depends who is on shift there at the time. staff get annoyed at how busy echuca/bendigo services get with no seats
With VLine fares being so cheap now and trains getting overcrowded as a result maybe they’ll stop allowing this to happen.
crazy timing to have this on the Windows Shutdown Day. o7 i salute you fellow PTV user
Thx man, i saw my ddream in real life, love ur vidos
Appreciate it mate :)
now this my type of video
That's good!
