Well, does a train journey review get any better than this? This maintained high interest value throughout the trip with some focus on the essential details - meals, scenery, bedding, costs, stops, passenger comfort and basic amenities. Added information was even offered with station altitudes, especially interesting around the Drummond Ranges, and populations of regional towns. An outstanding, comprehensive travel video! I would love to see you do one on the Westlander: Roma Street to Charleville :).

This is a great video. It brings back many fond memories. I rode the Spirit of the Outback from Longreach to Brisbane in the early 2000s. It was one of the best train trips that I have ever taken. I lived in Melbourne from 1999 to 2005. Being a fan of Qantas, I wanted to see the Qantas Museum and experience the Outback. I flew to Longreach and took the train back to Brisbane. I organized a hire car for use in Brisbane. When I told the agent the time I would arrive in Brisbane, she said the office would be closed. But not to worry! They left the keys and contract in the car. That, needless to say, caught this Texan’s breath. While in Australia I also rode the Tilt Train, The Spirit of Queensland, Indian Pacific, The Ghan, and The Overland. Yep, I am a train buff. I was sent to Australia by my employer for a two year assignment. I liked it so much that I arranged to stay for nearly six years. It is a great country.

Yes, will be interesting to see what the Queensland Government comes up with ... and they've commissioned a business case to replace the long distance loco-hauled trains.
this is one of the better train travelogues I have watched. You give us details about the train, the places, and the meals. Really enjoyed your photography of the varied landscapes. If ever I am able to make a trip to Australia, I would make an effort to ride on this train!
An excellent film. Use it or lose it is the clear message. Many of the trains I travelled on with my family both in Oz and NZ in the 1990s have gone - we need railways more than cars. Must have been wonderful in steam days.
That was and excellent video !!! You provide all the information someone could ask for...:):):) Thank you for showing all the dining car menues. Well done !!! :):):)
better late than never, stumbled across this while searching for Australian trains. Very well done, and it kept me interested all the way through. Thanks for a great video.
My husband and I did this return trip a few years ago and it was a fantastic trip. Everything on board was first class, our sleeper, food, staff, company we kept in the lounge and dining car. We made the return trip a week later and it was great to have some who were on the upward trip making the return with us. Would do it again but stay in Winton rather than Longreach.
Coal hauling trains are the reason you had a great ride from Rocky to Emerald. The line is well maintained and the boom in coal mining has meant the high demand for well maintained trackwork for this section of track. I hope to ride the rails on this service soon. You should be paid by the rail services for your great presentation.

Nice to see you back. Was only thinking the other day hadn’t seen a video for a little while. Lovely trip. Nothing like an adventure into the bush by rail. I do like a bed for sleeping at night. Weird that they don’t have similar sleeper cars on the Cairns train but those BC sleeper seats but here they have the decent and better sleeper cars.
Damn, it's been almost 3 years since I took this trip. Totally worth it, especially if you can do it in summer when they run their two for one deal - plus a lot less people in general means the lounge is all nice and spacious. They're small cabins, but absolutely perfect for the length of the trip and I got a good sleep each way.
Fantastic review thanks! We’d have more trains if we had more population, but then we wouldn’t be Australia any more! I remember seeing the ground flying past the bottom of the toilet chute on the old train from Kalgoorlie to Port Pirie in the late 1950s: a bit scary for a 6 year old. It was diesel but a steam train for the side trip to Adelaide. Had to change trains and gauges again in Albury! We would drive from Bunbury to Kalgoorlie then put the car on the train as the Nullarbor was unpaved and slow: 2-3 day trip with bull dust everywhere and no motel until an old cinder block relic in Eucla
It's like travelling with a mate! Your reviews are grand. Hope Longreach was great - the Qantas museum looks and sounds really cool. I really wanted to go on the XPT but missed my chance!
I'm a retired QldRail employee and once worked for Traveltrain as it was called then. I remember those single berth sleepers. They haven't changed much in 20 years. Great video, thank you. I thought they'd replaced all the dump toilets years ago?
Interesting that you stopped in Anakie. When I was at primary school here in London (UK) we had a teacher come over on an exchange visit from a primary school in Anakie. When she went home, she asked her pupils if they wanted to be penpals with anyone at our school, and those that did sent a batch of letters for our teachers to distribute to us. In assembly one morning we were asked who wanted a penpal in Australia, and I put my hand up. The teacher said that she had a great one for me, as someone had written who had the same first and surname as me!! We wrote back and forth for a while and learned that even our sisters had the same name! I recall his dad was a miner. But eventually the letters dried up and we lost touch. I occasionally still think of him, and wonder whether he might still be living Anakie.
Thanks for this video review. I found it very informative, interesting and entertaining ! I'd love to travel on this one day and visit the Qantas museum too.
I'm liking your new style live commentary! Hahahaha.... I absolutely suck at it. I've realised I can never ever sleep on the train. I recently did the XPT sleeper and I was awake the entire time. Urgh. So on that trip I was awake for 3 whole days. Enjoyed the video!
Thanks so much Ryan! I’m not very good at sleeping on trains myself … the things you’re willing to do for UA-cam. 🙊😂 Someone told me I should do more pieces to camera, so figured I’d give it a go. It’s easier to do when you have a private cabin … I’m a bit more reluctant in an open carriage / cabin. ☺️
great video, did this trip in 2005 with my wife, 2 young daughters and also were able to take our car, we had a triple economy class sleeper, was a great trip and i'd like to do it again
Hi Adam Enjoying your journeys on trains. Your commentary is very clear and enjoyable tropics. Would be great if you did the Indian Pacific, Sydney to Perth, it’s on our list of travels for the future. Thanks keep travelling.
Hi, Adam. You have given us another amazing rail adventure with your usual informative narration and easy to read captions. I am surprised at how reasonable the fare is especially as it includes meals and beverages. I am curious to know if twinette cabins with ensuite are available on this train. I think there will be many disappointed people who usually travel in the XPT Sleepers when they find out the replacement will not have Sleepers, however, maybe they will have seats similar to the QR business class. I must put this journey to Longreach on my bucket list before the journey is discontinued or Before I kick the bucket. I would like to wish you and your family a very MERRY CHRISTMAS and a much better NEW YEAR to come.
Having seats similar to the QR BC seats is not a substitute imo and won’t drive patronage. I would use a sleeper because it’s a sleeper; not bunking down with the rest of the cabin listening to snoring and coughing. It makes the choice of flying easier.
@@xr6lad I definitely agree with you and I think the NSW Government has made a big mistake but they are not known for their good choices when it comes to transport.
Hi John. Thank you! No, none of the cabins have ensuites. You can see the layout of the twin carriages on the QR website. They're essentially the same design as the singles but with no wall / partition between them: www.queenslandrailtravel.com.au/travelwithus/onboardexperiences/carriagelayout I believe the Queensland Government has a business case underway to replace the Spirit of the Outback, The Inlander and The Westlander, so will be interesting to see what comes of that. A very Merry Christmas and Happy New Year to you and your family too! :)
A memory of the trip from Longreach to Brisbane and return. It was a steam engine to Emerald from Longreach getting to Emerald around 11pm. They used 2 steam engines to get over the Drummond Range. Arrive in Rockhampton around 9 or 10am, with a lay over until 5 or 6pm if catching the Brisbane Rocky mail train, 9pm if catching the Sunlander from Cairns to Brisbane. Gympie was the morning stopover if catching the Rocky-Brisbane mailtrain as it had no showers or dining facilities. Passengers had showers at Gympie followed by breakfast. Lunch was bought at one of the stops where sandwiches were available. A lot different to now. My last journey to Longreach return was in 1977, not a lot had changed then other than diesel engine and no longer the mail train available. No air conditioning on the mail train.
I travelled as far as Gympie on one of my trips to Australia, so it was nice to relive the journey again, I will check out your Tlit train video next, thanks.
Looks like it takes some dedication to do long-haul rail in our country. That rolling stock looks really tired and grubby inside and out. Your coverage, as usual, forensic.
Thanks so much! It was pretty clean and reasonably maintained from what I could see ... but yes, ageing rolling stock that you can only do so much with. I believe the Queensland Government currently has a business underway to look at replacing this train, The Inlander and The Westlander. Also worth saying that unlike some state governments, at least the Queensland government continues to offer these services. :)
@@FromtheWindowSeat I concur with you = well done to Queensland Rail for continuing the Rail Services throughout the whole of the State; they are the largest Rail Services of any in the whole of Australia. Greatly enjoyed your presentation. Many memories of years past along parts of the journey. God bless your work.
Thank you! The return was booked as a through trip with a connecting flight to Adelaide so was over $600 but standard fares between Longreach and Brisbane are about $250.
Hi Adam good to hear your voice again I really enjoy watching your videos. Trip looked great scenery was really good and meals absolutely yummy. Hope you enjoyed your triip . MERRY XMAS AND HAPPY NES YEAR hope you have more coming soon.
Hi Maureen. Thanks so much. Yes, it was a wonderful trip. I was in New Zealand for a few week so that put a hold on things but hopefully can get things moving again now. Merry Christmas to you too!
I did the Spirit of The Outback a couple of years ago. Not only is Longreach a fabulous destination, but getting the train to and from is an absolute bonus adventure in itself. Yes it is a bit dated but functional, food and staff great and it's something different. I travelled with someone so we had a twin sleeper, which is the same as the single sleeper but the with partition removed, so you face each other. Definitely feels more spacious. The lounge car was out of service on our trips, and was replaced with the replacement dining car shown in this journey. Coming in to Longreach it was already dark and we were treated to a lightening display as we rolled in. If you're thinking about doing this trip, do it!
Looks like yourself and others enjoyed the trip, It would be great to see a more modern replacement to make it more desirable to other generations of people into the future and spur some tourism along the way. Good to know it's possible to get on at Caboolture. That would be handy for me. I'm not far away
Modern is more comfortable i guess, but i dont mind things a bit antiquated as it makes it feel more like an adventure. I'd say the price would skyrocket too.
11:56 Correction: This is not Mount Coolum but Mount Ninderry, as some viewers have pointed out. Oops! Mount Coolum is about 9km further east.
There are tracks up Mt Ninderry and a few lookout spots on the top.

Another wonderful video Adam. Very interesting to see what this particular train carriages look like. Scenery is rather spectacular and the food on board looks very tempting. Thanks for sharing it.
Glad you enjoyed it
You did very well, attention to every detail Thank you for your time to do this video.
Thanks so much!
This was amazing. You've answered to many questions I had about this journey. I need to do it now. Thanks for making this video. I've enjoyed your other ones aswell 😀
So glad to hear that. Hope you enjoy the trip!
Hey Adam, it's Beanie Aka BeanieBoyMoto ... You're a Champion! I'm @ work ... I'll give you a Thumbs Up now & watch tonight when I get home can't wait! Cheers mate 👍😎🤙 Beanie
Thanks so much - I hope you enjoy it when you watch it tonight. :)
@@FromtheWindowSeat Cheers mate 👍
Great review. The train looks great and the trip considering the distance is much cheaper than the Indian Pacific or Ghan. The meals look great.
Thank you! Yes, I certainly think it represents excellent value. :)
Thank you. Yes, it was a great trip. I went to New Zealand for a few weeks so that put a pause on all my editing. 😉
Yes, two for one is incredible value! Cheers.
Thank you! Wow - that sounds like an incredible journey across the country!
It's like travelling with a mate! Your reviews are grand. Hope Longreach was great - the Qantas museum looks and sounds really cool. I really wanted to go on the XPT but missed my chance!
Thanks so much … wonderful to hear! Yes, the Qantas Founders Museum was excellent!
I'm a retired QldRail employee and once worked for Traveltrain as it was called then. I remember those single berth sleepers. They haven't changed much in 20 years. Great video, thank you. I thought they'd replaced all the dump toilets years ago?
Thank you so much! I think all the carriages had retention toilets except for the single sleeper … but I’m guessing they will replace it soon. 🤞🏽
Fantasric review. I live in Brisbane and it’s on my bucket list to go that train journey. I really enjoyed this , thanks.
They also offer Coke and Sprite reviews
Thank you! You definitely should! Cheers.
Ha! 🥤
Thanks Adam for another fantastic review and video.
My pleasure! Glad you enjoyed it.
Always do Adam. If my health improves I'm doing this trip.
Wow. What a small world … that’s an incredible story. Cheers!
Thanks for this video review. I found it very informative, interesting and entertaining ! I'd love to travel on this one day and visit the Qantas museum too.
Really glad to hear that. You definitely should. Cheers!
Great to see you uploading again. Much love and thanks from Singapore.
Thank you! I was in New Zealand for a few weeks so that delayed editing a bit. 😉
Great video, Adam. Really informative and interesting.
Much appreciated! Thank you!
The menu selection was quite impressive. Very enjoyable video.
It was. Thank you!
great video, did this trip in 2005 with my wife, 2 young daughters and also were able to take our car, we had a triple economy class sleeper, was a great trip and i'd like to do it again
Thank you! Sounds like you had a wonderful journey.
This channel is very underrated.
And has very good potential for 100k subs, new sub!
Thank you! 🙏
Hi Adam
Enjoying your journeys on trains. Your commentary is very clear and enjoyable tropics. Would be great if you did the Indian Pacific, Sydney to Perth, it’s on our list of travels for the future. Thanks keep travelling.
Great suggestion! I’ll see what I can do. 🤔
That's it Adam.... you're off to Perth! 😄
They're essentially the same design as the singles but with no wall / partition between them:
www.queenslandrailtravel.com.au/travelwithus/onboardexperiences/carriagelayout
I believe the Queensland Government has a business case underway to replace the Spirit of the Outback, The Inlander and The Westlander, so will be interesting to see what comes of that. A very Merry Christmas and Happy New Year to you and your family too! :)
@@FromtheWindowSeat Thanks for the link, I found it very interesting.
Good food by the way. It all looked tasty. And decent serves.
It was. 😋
Well done and congratulations. Very informative and interesting. Oh, and a BIG thumbs up.
Thanks so much!
Wow … that is quite the adventure! Thank you for sharing. Cheers!
No dining.
No air con.
OMG.
Next you'll be saying there were no pillows. 😉
@@le13579 stick yer head out the window- natural airconditioning lol
I travelled as far as Gympie on one of my trips to Australia, so it was nice to relive the journey again, I will check out your Tlit train video next, thanks.
Oh cool. Hope you enjoy!
Great trip .Winton most known for Walzing matilda was first performed in the town. Fitting it was an outback town.
Cheers! Good to know!
Great video Adam! Everything was so much greener than I expected! Longreach especially!
Thanks Paul! Yes, I thought the same. I think they’d had decent rains. ☺️
Excellent information and narration...
Thank you kindly!
@@Jesse2ful Thank you!
Amazing train trip. The cabin is very good. XPT has no place to charge my phone.
Glad you liked it!
God bless you m8 great video nice food on that train all the best John uk 😊
Ps how much was the flight back 😊
Agreed. Thank you for sharing! 😊
I took this trip from Rockhampton to Longreach in 1970. It had three engines to pull us over the Drummond Range and it took three days each way. 😮
Oh wow … quite the adventure!
Hi Adam.. you inspire me to explore Australia via train
I’m really happy to hear that. ☺️
Excellent, thanks. New Years greetings from the UK.🤗
Thank you. And to you! 🥂
Thank you Adam! I really enjoyed that review.
Thanks so much Irene.
Reminds me of the Budd cars they use in Canada, I believe they call them Hep cars. I love diesel passenger trains.
Yes, I can see the similarity. 👍
Amazing stuff. i had no idea this was available. excellent wokr
Thanks so much!
Looks like yourself and others enjoyed the trip, It would be great to see a more modern replacement to make it more desirable to other generations of people into the future and spur some tourism along the way.
Good to know it's possible to get on at Caboolture. That would be handy for me. I'm not far away
Yes, it would be good to see them invest in new rolling stock.
Modern is more comfortable i guess, but i dont mind things a bit antiquated as it makes it feel more like an adventure. I'd say the price would skyrocket too.
Excellent review….. well done looking forward to the next one
Thanks so much!
Another world-class video.
Thank you!
