Victor, the place where he failed was in the intention he set at the beginning of the call. His intention out of the gate was to set you up for a demo. Bla!!! "I was just calling to get you set up for a demo." That elicited the defensive response to protect your time, that you weren't interested in a demo because "I am going to sign with another company this afternoon". He didn't know how to respond at that point.
Shouldn't the intention have been different, to begin with? He should have started with questions:
    1. We noticed you contacted us about our product and signed up. It sounds like you have an immediate need we may be able to help with. Could you share some more about your need?
    2. How did you find us and decide to connect to learn more about our product?
    3. How will you be using the product?
    4. Have you looked at other systems and had demos?
    5. What attributes did you like about them?
    6. Where do they fall short?
It frustrates me to no end as well. Let's get this fixed with amazing sales training!

That was a seriously good rant. However, I do feel for the salesman a bit. Obviously he wasn’t trained properly. It’s a big problem in many fields, from the military, to the education system to sales - terrible training programmes.

I’m not gonna lie. That’s exactly what I would have done.
And that’s why I have always sucked at sales, don’t do sales. It’s funny because I am a software developer. But nobody ever teaches sales. We have to do it ourselves if that’s what we want to do.
Now that was 20 years ago for me.
Now I know that the Sales team is the most important component next to a marketing team in any business.

Once you told the salesperson that you are signing a contract that gave him the implication that you've already made a decision and he might have not want to waste his time with you. If he would have continued he would have appeared to be intrusive and even unprofessional for which a reasonable prospect might have made a complaint to the company or would probably just hung up.

I love to watch your videos.
It is always hard to find a good sells person and marketing person.
It a large deals I always to it personally, it is way harder when the product it more technical.
Usually employees have a poor result and freelancers are way better.
In my opinion is it super hard to find a loyal and with perfect result employee, since must of the good sells persons have "mercenaries" mentality.

Hey Victor, love this pod cast. I had a similar situation and thought the same as you. I was looking for an online designing program to put on our site. Filled out the online form of 4 different suppliers. Only one called me back a few weeks later and worse is that the guy that called me was very challenged with the English language. Not only did they not call me back while the iron was hot but made it worse when he could not even speak the language that he knew the customer would be speaking. I can just imagine how many sales these companies lose.

Amen. Whether you’re selling cars, cards, clothes, food, or services, it is always in your best interest to invest in your sales people! I see this most often in retail where people are thrown into a customer service environment with little to no customer service training and if they do receive any it is worthless. You should be training your sales people to interact with customers in a friendly and respectful tone and paying them on commission, at least 1% with additional wages or salary if necessary. Without this training and incentive, your sales people become mindless machines.

I have been enjoying your insightfull sales wisdom for a while.
In this lesson you accused the salesman who called you, of not fighting for the sale. I agree with everything you said.
You ended with a pefect close to the lesson... ALMOST.
You started to say you would call his company.
THEN you changed your mind, and said you wouldn't bother!
Were you not letting your emotions getting in the way?
Did you not just miss a potential opportunity for yourself?
Or was this a test to see if anyone was paying attention?
So, I have an idea for your next lesson on "how emotions get in the way of the sale".
    Respectfully,
    -
    Rick

I think there can be some grace extended here.

Other than that, keep up with the awesome work you are doing.

Hi Victor, I absolutely love your vid as they never fail to amaze me. I have been following your vid for some time and I am currently facing with a dilemma.
I tried to be persistent in the past. However, most of the time, i ended up not getting any results as prospect like this usually fails to turn up for appointment or they still go ahead on other company's product even after the meet up. This resulted in loss of time as I could have met another sincere prospect to close the deal. Is this mindset wrong and do you have any advice for me? Appreciate your feedback and thanks lots!

Great tips as always, Victor! To be fair though, since that company took a while to get back to you, it's possible they may have been struggling through a growth spurt, were swamped with work, only called you back out of obligation, and were secretly relieved when you said no. I've worked for companies that had way more work on their plate than they could handle, were horribly understaffed, and didn't have time to hire and properly train more people. Customer support under those conditions is terrible anyway, so it's probably good you didn't end up with that product, lol

Exactly and also to add to that, often when I say I’ll think about it and get back to you, I really am thinking about it and it’s probably a budgeting issue on my pet with coming up with the money if they asked for an unexpected fee. I won’t waste my time trying to talk them down I will just try to figure out how to come up with the money and usually it takes time but the whole time I’m away trying to figure it out I’m really thinking about it.

The only way, Josh Simpson. Every product or service. Look at watches. The most profitable ones have a backstory. Victor has a rags to riches story. It should be based on facts, but sales are sold using emotion. We are emotional beings, so how else are you to interact with a human. Soon, algorithms will be deployed for decision makers, and only then are you to sell factually!

Victor I like you and a lot of your advice however sometimes you create a lot of unrealistic scenarios like this one. How many times does someone say on the phone to someone that they don't even know that they're sitting down having a cup of coffee relaxing? Really Victor? Now I know you're trying to make an example out of the guy but come on. This doesn't happen because 99 times out of 99 you're just going to hang up just like the rest of us. You've made up your mind and that's the end of it.
