- Absence of You was shot at The Rechabite in Perth Western Australia, a hall which holds so many incredible memories for me.
It was filmed in one shot, which required - as well as the crew and all the artists you see listed below - a couple of dozen brilliant, tireless students from the Stage Management school at the WA Academy of Performing Arts.
Thank you also to Marcus Canning and the Rechabite crew. Legends all.

*Absence of You* (Lyrics)
I take a walk on the Seine
Cross Pont Neuf on my way to St Germain
Love-hearts on padlocks on wire in the mist
Where young lovers kiss
And swear to be true
Echoes of ten thousand sighs of love
And yet I
Feel only the absence of you
Out of a window on the thirtieth floor
Central Park shines with the coming of dawn
Through eyes rendered weary by jetlag and wine
I turn round to find
There’s a girl in my room
For a moment we kiss
But her vodka-soaked lips
Taste only of the absence of you
I don’t know
What all of this means
If you are not here with me
And I am lost
When we are apart
There’s a hole in my heart
That light passes through
And the pattern it creates
Is the shape of
The absence of you
Spring has been found hanging round Soho Square
So I take my coffee and newspaper there
To bask in the not-warm-enough April sun
With the workers who come
To eat Pret with no shoes
But the grass to the side
Of the patch where I’m lying
Is flat with the absence of you
I don’t know
What all this is for
If you are not near to me
And I can’t sleep
Sleep is no fun when the unruly sun
Will reveal the truth
A space in my bed as cold as the dead
Exactly the size and the shape of
The absence of you
And all of this beauty
Runs over and through me
And pools round my shoes
And the puddle it forms
Conforms to the shape of
The absence of you

Tim has really developed his brooding potential.
Yeah I saw that too. deep
If pain's what you want in an act, pain he can do. He can have a dark side too.

It's very 2020.
My wife died last year and we love to hear Tim’s songs, today I hear this song and I couldn’t hold my tears, everyday till the end of my life I’m gonna miss her ... and this song reflects what I feel everyday...

He's come a long way in expressing his love for his wife since "If I Didn't Have You"
well, that one was fun, though, wasn't it? :D
@@reallollabunny it was indeed. But seeing this side of Tim is nice.
If I Didn’t Have You is an homage to his wife’s sense of humor, according to a Tim interview on ITV. A tongue-in-cheek love 💕 song.
@@maryfitzpatrick5357 his wife is awesome but we all knew that, didn't we? why else would they be together since they were 17?
Ahh, but If I Didn't Have You isn't a love song; it's a song about maths.
Saw Tim Minchin in Birmingham last year because my wife is a huge fan. I can't even remember what I expected because the show obliterated all my expectations. I've seen loads of bands. I've seen lots of musicals. I've seen many comedians. Of every show I've seen I enjoyed Tim's the most. Just mind blowing. The man and his team are amazing. I was instantly converted. I am a huge fan now.
I was in Birmingham too! (All the way from Rome!)
Definitely, he's rising above some of my 60's and 70's faves!
@Scout Dee second row! me too! the first night... the second noght I was in the balcony
Smart wife 😁
I converted my husband by taking him to see Tim at the Apollo in London.
Yo Tim is weirldy shredded and I'm here for it.
Buff Jesus
Yeah man. Good arms!
I was told to go look at (photos from) Upright with Tim. you are welcome ;-)
He really kicked it into high gear for Robin Hood.
So is the model, actually.
My Abby died four months ago...
We would so often just sit and listen to Tim songs and laugh..... I was constantly showing her his new stuff...
The last song I got to show where was airport piano.....
Her Celebration of life is tomorrow...
I've been trying to hold it together as well as I can...
But here I am with the tears flowing freely right now because listening to this song for the first Time reminds me of only the absence of her.....
I'm so sorry Joe. I know you'll feel her absence forever but I hope you've found the strength to continue on and live each day with gratitude for having Abby in your life. ❤
This is the first not funny song i heard from Tim. Felt awkward at first. But it's great. People who are good at joking value true serious moments more than others, i think.
Listen to white wine in the sun
"Tutorlike" Alex is here! Good to see you, glad you appreciate Tim's work!
I envy you so much! So many beautiful pieces to be discovered!
He has many non-humor based material and it's all phenominal.
Tim has done plenty of 'non funny' songs. Maybe you just haven't seen any of his live shows. Give them a go. He is amazing!
Ok, fine. Gonna buy me several vinyl copies of the album. Don't have a record player. Don't care. Gotta go hug my wife some more.
"Inflatable You" was the first Minchin song I heard. I laughed my way through his material until I heard "White Wine in the Sun" and that stopped me dead in my laughing tracks.
This song feels like so much fulfilled potential I just needed to put this out there. Thanks, Rock and Roll Nerd.
a tear fell on the first verse, and i had to dry my eyes before i could read the last.except for the part where he's with another woman this song is my life since my wife died. i thought i had a problem listening to "carry you" without bawling like a baby this one ought to be interesting. as much as it hurts to feel her absence every minute of every day to have someone say in musical format what we can't actually find the words for (in my case at least) helps to let go of the pain and focus more on the fact that as long as she's in my heart she'll never really be gone, if that makes any sense. thank you tim from both of us cause i know she'll love this song as she did everything else you've done. she was a tremendous fan/potential stalker.
I’ll take lonely tonight absolutely WRECKED me. I kinda shoved my parents divorce deep down and it brought it back up and threw it in my face.
Sending love and understanding...Carry You is my lament and promise to my husband, likewise lost. Hugs. Xx
@@suzanneh2679 thank you, for your kindness. my children and i literally carry her, we all have necklaces with some of her ashes inside the remainder will be spread out in kuaii as soon as we don't have to spend 2 weeks in quarantine. one thing that helps me is i spend time talking to her every day. i mean full on out loud conversations (one sided though they are) about shows we watched together music everything and anything, and sometimes i can almost feel her and for me she's not here but not gone either if that makes sense. i hope the good times you spent together hold you the times you need them most as mine do.
@@lottecollin5268 anybody can write a sad song or a love song or a comedy song. but to write something that reaches inside of you and grabs you by the soul is a level of talent and empathy not a lot of artists can achieve. tim is one of those people and it shows.
Bless you mate. Stay strong and feel the love - we’ll all meet up again at the end 💞
I lost my partner of 5 years last year. Yesterday would have been his 28th birthday, and I saw Tim perform this on CBS that morning. It turned me into a sobbing mess. I miss him so much and I'm going to love him until I take my last breath.
Minchkins Assemble!! (Am I in the right place?!) Xx
Yes !
Is that what I am? LOL
These are clearly songs (15 Minutes, I'll Take Lonely Tonight, Airport Piano, Leaving L.A.) written by a man a world away from the family he holds so dear. For an excruciatingly extended period of time. Having to observe the world through that lense. Breathtakingly and heartbreakingly beautiful. 10/10. Right in my personal feels.
I'll Take Lonely Tonight sounded like an apology to me
@@jacelovelace7648 he is apologising to the girl he didn't have sex with cos he loves his wife
Jace and Avasan, you are both right. It is an apology to both women.
is it me, or is Tim not only becoming a better musician but also becoming better-looking with age? I mean, he definitely looks like he's paying more attention to his body these days. I like it! and not only because it's attractive :D
I still remember that line from Rock'n'Roll Nerd: "He doesn't look good with his t-shirt off"
well, these days I don't think it's true anymore.
p.s. I know I am being superficial right now. I came here for the lyrics but I couldn't fail noticing the rest too ;-)

I spend Tim time every day and it just makes me happy! If you haven't found the Minchkins on Facebook, check them out. They are just the kindest, loveliest, most supportive people you could imagine! Damn the film making for this is incredible... I mean, the song is brilliant too, but the fact it’s all one continuous shot just takes it to the next level...
Tim was my partners favourite comedian. In fact Tim’s “9 life lessons” was the last thing he ever posted before he died tragically at 42. I finally found the courage to watch Tim again and this was the first thing I clicked. Mark would have loved this…
I love how Tim keeps evolving. Tim if you happen to read this keep just being you.

It's rare you get to witness the evolution of a musical and lyrical genuis. I'm so glad I am fortunate enough to have witnessed this one.
I didn't know it was possible to like Tim Minchin more than I already did but his new songs proved me wrong
It is not hyperbole when I say that this has become my new favorite song. The love songs I liked in my youth were full of impossible promises, unsustainable passions, and a totally naive concept of love. What you have done here and in "Lonely Tonight" captures a wiser, wearier love that speaks right to the sputtering, jerry-rigged jalopy that is my heart.
The brilliant video is icing on the cake. The team on this did something astounding. When I showed it to my wife she said "No way!" at least 4 times. Great work.
Tim your wife is a lucky woman. These have been some of the greatest love songs of all time honestly. I am usually not into mushy stuff but these songs have been objectively amazing.
Is there nothing that this genius can't do? At 66, and with all my music from the 60's and 70's, Tim is beginning to stand Head and Shoulders above some of my favorites. Took awhile for the Universe to bring him into my life, (like a month ago)but hey, HE came nonetheless! Beautiful Tim!
Someone asked me today what genres of music I listen to. They looked confused when I simply replied, "Tim Minchin". So, I played some of your tracks which they liked, but they said it's too bad you aren't releasing full length albums. I disagreed. I think if you released more than one track a month, I would be so overwhelmed. I mean, I'm still not the least bit tired of playing Apart Together 3-4 times a day and feel I'm just scratching the surface of Airport Piano despite having listened to it at least a hundred times by now.
Nov 19th album release 😉
I've definitely gone over 100 listens to Airport Piano, which makes me cry. This one though. I listen to it and then go find my wife and cuddle her fiercely.
This song hits home coming from a cult Christian school survivor. Here in Canada we have orange shirt day for the native residential school kids who have survived or have family who haven't and that's a wonderful thought to remember but what about us kids in Christian cult schools. Nobody speaks about it except for Tim who wrote a song.Thank you from the bottom of my heart.❤❤
My Tim has developed some guns! ❤️ the strings.
I separated from my wife of 25 years when I moved her across country to her new place and kissed her for the last time on July fourth 2019. I heard this song this morning on CBS sand immediately broke down as this is the first sonic representation of what my life has become - save the second verse. My wife’s are the last lips I have kissed since we parted. Thank you Tim for much needed music therapy. This is incredible.
Still miss you Sherr!!
From comedy to tragedy and everything inbetween, here is a man who transforms physicality and metaphysicality into a metamorphosis, becoming a Minchinsis. This work and past ventures have been fundamentally meaningful enough to bring tears to my eyes, whether from joy or sadness. The human condition, in the shape of Tim Minchin.
Beautiful description.
What a rockstar
You kept writing songs. Now you're heard and we definitely care. You are so fucking rock Tim Minchin.
I wish life would give me the chance to buy this guy a glass of wine and thank him.
I heard Tim perform this song in San Diego before he left to go home, and it brought me to tears. I am SO PSYCHED that he's finally releasing it! The beautiful special edition vinyl is going to look great in my collection too. Can't wait!
There's a Vinyl!?
I was also at that show! its was truly amazing! I love that he preformed most of the songs on his new album at that concert!

I have always loved Tim, since Jesus Christ Superstar. All his satire and silliness was a joy but this is so transcendent. How lucky are we that he is still with us being too loud and staying too long. For the record, it will never be too long, Thank you Tim.
If he makes love the way he handles that piano, Sarah is one lucky wife.
Tim, you are incredibly beautiful.
Like a fine wine improving with time, and delighting in unexpected ways. Keep going Tim. Your best days are still ahead.
No one's gonna see this but anyways: my ex showed me Tim Minchin's channel and ever since I've loved it. Him and I haven't talked since June because we were on bad terms. Yesterday I listened to that song missing him for that reason. Today, I learned his death and now I'm listening to this song for this reason...
I see it. 🙂
I'm so sorry to hear that. I hope you're keeping up alright.
Thank you, Mr. Minchin, for exposing so much of us. You always allow me to feel remarkably human.
Thankyou Tim I finally see my self

Hello love (Lea Preston from minchkins)
❤😢 so beautiful. Missing my friend so very much.
Absence as a presence. The lyrics are beautiful.
I’ve had apart together and airport piano on repeat for weeks and I literally could not be more ready for more
I love this so much, but I would kill to hear an acoustic version of this with just Tim and the piano
Specifically for this song, but for basically his entire portfolio as well, Tim's lyrics always say SO much. Great depth can be found in a perfectly worded line which, at first glance (listen), might not seem so profound. But listening again brings out more and more meaning. They say a picture is worth a thousand words; but just one stanza of Tim Minchin's lyrics (juxtaposed with heart rending chord changes) can elicit INFINITE emotions, all felt at once. Just amazing.
I think I can safely speak for everyone. We love you, Tim! Thanks for the time and effort you have put into becoming who you are.
Congrats on finally becoming a rockstar
The fact that it's a serious song is something I expect, he's an amazing musician. However, I am still not used to seeing him in shoes.
When people say that time munchkin is dead. (Trend wise) I will always love the beautiful music and comedy this bloody legend gives. Even when he dies his soul and heart will carry on. Great song Tim.
This song could not be more beautiful
This is maybe the second or third song by Tim Minchin where I've had to check Wikipedia to see if he's still married to Sarah.
I did the same!
Heh. Saved me a job lol
Were the previous two Lonely Tonight and Carry You?
Relationships are messy and complicated. And Tim has temptations and diversions that most of us will never understand. Tim's honest enough to put it into his music!
@@JoelWende I tend to think that he puts into words the temptations and diversions that we all have.
Wow. I fell in love with your voice watching JCS. Seeing and hearing this is so emotional I can’t imagine anyone not being touched by this.

Mr. Minchin, my wife has died in November 4th, 2020 and then I find this song... And now I am trying to avoid that my tears fall on my keyboard as I realize I am not strong as I thought I was...
She was a HUGE fan of your work. And this song, she would love it if she was here to listen to it right now.
She told me many times that she talked to you on Twitter, mr. Minchin. Her name's Renata. I believe you remember her. And now I realize this video was uploaded in the same month she died. Why?
Maybe she was telling me the truth when she said you owed her your piano, one of your legs and your wife. And I know you've got the reference.
Tim is my new hero, comedian, musician, philosopher.
Tim Minchin was responsible for us having to spend a night in the car, in the snow. Well, not him personally. It had snowed outside during his performance, and on the way home on the motorway, a car slid in front of a truck, causing it to brake, slide sideways and overturn. It blocked the motorway. We were there until 5am until we got going again. And Tim was worth spending the night in the car for. He was incredible. I'd do it again in a heartbeat, even though I had to slog through knee deep snow up the embankment at the side of the motorway to find a bush to have a pee behind.
I first heard this song when @gabbiboltmusic posted her version during lockdown at Easter time. Gabbi pleaded for Tim to release it and he finally has. The song brings spears and smiles to my heart as it revisits more than 30 years of memories with my wife that we lost more than two years ago. Thank you for the skill of reopening images and feelings Tim.
My eyes misted at the first verse, and didn’t stop until past the end of the song. The song is beautiful and anyone who has missed the presence of a loved one can feel it’s pull. Thank you. 🙏

Such an inspiration and the man's brooding potential got to him, yet still rocks the fucking masses. Absolute legend in his own right - maybe could write a song about being the legend he has become over the years.
That song touched me to my core
Oh to be a dancer in a Tim Minchin music video 😫😫 This song is so beautiful, and the video is amazing
Omg, I knew I should have waited till I was more stable to listen to this song, but it’s Tim Minchin so of course I clicked.
And now I’ve an immense heartache for a concept that I personally haven’t experienced, and I can’t stop listening to this song.
It’s blindingly beautiful in everything - the melody, the delivery, the lyrics, and the mv.
This is phenomenal, there is a certain Whitlamsyness to the beginning, the smoulderingly intense chorus that is unmistakably Minchin, and the brilliant texture and dynamic of everything in between is, to me, proof of Minchin's immense musical ability. I can only imagine the mountains of work that went into this, and for that we all thank you.

I totally agree!! Not many artists give true credit to the other musicians, cast and crew. Tim has always made a point of doing it.

Another beautiful song Tim, I bought Apart Together and I’ll take lonely tonight and have been playing them nonstop for weeks. I’m sure this will be joining my playlist too
As gorgeous as these new songs are, I'm still holding out for more comedy. We need as many laughs as we can get in 2020
I think at this point the comedy is going to come for award ceremony openings, tv shows, and the occasional special event. I highly doubt we're ever going to see Tim doing pure comedy focused stuff again. It wasn't ever really his thing, it was a means to an end. And he's found that end now!
@@JoelWende i'm not sure if it was a means to an end, or just an adventure he didn't quite see coming. who knows, maybe he will plan another trip someday
I dont know, he did it for over a decade and he won his fame with it. I'd still say that even with how evocative these new songs are, they're what he's best at. Here's to hoping he returns to it. Surely not full time, but with a fair share of focus
