Lyrics:
If I had the blueprint or the brain
I would build an aeroplane
I’d fashion wings of balsa wood and glue
And I would fly to you
I’d carve a prop from old recycled would haves
All these relentless could have
These pointless might have beens
Oh the storms that I would gladly battle through
So I could fly to you
Had I the method or the means
I would build a time machine
I’d make it from the scraps you aways find
When someone leaves their broken dreams behind
And I’d fuel it with the beats that my heart misses
When you sign your name with kisses
Made of x’s when you text me
It’s so silly but
Any fuel and any fire will do
I will fly to you
And I’d carve a prop from old recycled would haves
All these relentless could haves
These pointless might have beens
Oh the storms that I would gladly battle through
So I could fly to you
Oh the storms that I would gladly battle through
So I could fly to you

These comments are incredibly lovely. Thanks all you lovely bastards for your support. x
You have no idea how much you helped us all.
Maybe a little, hope is enough for you to continue to write.
Thank you kind soul
Can't wait to cheer for you again this Saturday!
Our pleasure 😁
We love you Tim!
Oh how I WISH you would visit the US!!
(PREFERABLY the eastern... somewhere in the middle... specifically Tennessee.)
Tim Minchin; forever alternating between releasing music that’s side-splitting and heart-breaking. Beautiful 💜
My life in a nutshell. Heartbreaks with some laughs sprinkled in...
@@sarcasm-83 Hang in there.
Emotional Tim ... loved season 2
Who writes them for you?.
kidding, keep on going on fella.
Almost like he is born to write muisicals 😁. Not sarcasm just joys spreading ... sure .. I a hippy or
As I enter the third year of grieving the loss of my beloved best friend and husband I heard this song. The pain is still incredibly overwhelming and this song pierced my heart. I love you for singing this to me. And a side note, Upright was one of the first things I enjoyed after he passed. Thank you for your beautiful art, Tim Minchin.
Twenty years further on in that loss journey but I feel the same.
I know the exact feeling
Dad took his life 3 yrs ago and his Bday would’ve been 3 weeks ago.
Tim this is your greatest work IMO.
Few months out from the loss of a very important person in my life. I can't put it into words how this song makes me feel.
Cathartic and heartbreaking.
I feel exactly like same, it’s been 19 months since my husband died. I never imagined that my Tim Minchin journey, that started a month ago in the form of my first genuine laughter since he died, could also touch my grieving heart so eloquently.
So sorry for the loss of your loved ones all on this thread, sending you all love and healing for your hearts ❤
A proper Australian national treasure. Actually, he’s everyone’s treasure, a world citizen. This song needs to get lots of airtime on national radio. We all need balm for our souls.
we need him to represent australia in eurovision 2023 ngl
Well said. It's an honour to be able to hear this stuff. It's like it's what I was always waiting for from Tim.
@@winterv3vo THE DREAM!!! I'd spend a small fortune voting 🤭
@@MrCerir sadly don't think it will ever be him, but we still have a great band representing them this year
@@winterv3vo I've just listened to it. Not what I was expecting AT ALL!!! Australia's got at least one vote from me this year 😍
Honestly, he got famous for his comedy but his dramatic repertoire is incredible, and often still interlaced with his humour.
I love how he often presents humour and silliness as a natural aspect of beauty and love. It's so human
I can have a darkside. If you want me to. I can have a darkside.
I can develop my brooding potential if pain's what you want in an act. Pain I can do. I can have a dark side too. I can have a dark side too.
Yippi!!
The frustration of being stuck in comedy music is something he has talked about before. I’m so happy he’s gotten to do more. He’s made two of my favorite non-comedy songs. This and White wine in the sun.
@@PontusWelin I think I'd still put White Wine in the Sun in the "comedy career" bucket? The first half definitely starts out as a stand-up routine ("I get freaked out by churches", talking about consumerism, etc) even if it's not all jokes per se. People laugh when they hear it.
But the direction the SECOND half of the song goes - man. It's the only song I've ever heard that really GETS the holidays. I teared up the first time I heard it. It actually singlehandedly made me appreciate holidays more.
@@Nalehw yeah. It’s humorous. But the core of it is a heartfelt holiday song about family. Just like an action film with jokes in it is still an action film.
@@Nalehw I'm with you, love that song. Beauty is amazing beyond words. Imo You grew on me is pretty poetic in a dark way. I feel that it can easily pass a a serious song. "The successful removal of you would probably kill me too". Damn.
As much as I love Tim's fantastic comedic pieces, I am endlessly grateful that he now has the creative freedom to write beautiful songs like this one, he's an incredible writer and storyteller
Beautiful, YOU'RE FUCKING AMAZING!!
Over the years I have enjoyed many laughs, tears, headshaking in near disbelief and smiling till my face hurt while watching your videos and listening to your artistic creations. Because of the sudden and unexpected passing of my spouse of 22 years, I was able to secure tickets and will be flying to Australia for your 11 April, 2024 show at the Enmore Theatre. I sang Carry You
when I released her cremains back to the universe. I still sing it as it helps me to feel peace and positivity. Thank you for your kind heart and for sharing your talents. 🕊
11 years ago I followed a man on UA-cam because I found his song about how life would still go on if he didn't have his girl and thought it was a good and funny song. Now that same man is making me cry at 7 a.m.. Hats off to you, sir. You are one of the best in our time and of all time!
What was that song 11 years ago?
@@sharondevlin6820 "If I didn't have you"
Ditto
Same here!
Same, except that my induction song was 'Five Poofs and Two Piano's' on the Johnathan Ross show back in 2009.
When Tim is doing an Insta live and tells you to go and watch the video, you do as the man says.
Beautiful song.
I love how your lyrics, whether comedic or serious, we start with a blank canvas and then you begin to paint in every tiny detail by hand for us as we sit there in awe of it all. You put all the focus on the minute details of what the plane is crafted from so we could envision it and the meaning behind the scraps needed to reach "you." Just beautiful.
This song is beautiful 😢
Not what I was expecting.
I was gearing up to laugh and instead unexpected tears came trickling down my cheeks.
You are very good at what you do Tim.
It’s an amazing gift to be able to make people feel these days.
Keep being you!
Tim has an amazing singing voice that will always hit my soul
Indeed he does
I found Tim from his comedy but I loved him for his reflective and emotional music. The man is a gem.
My girlfriend dedicated this song to me. In a couple of months I have to go back to my country and we don’t know how things will work out for us. I’m just listening to this at 3 in the morning bawling my eyes out. I love her so much and she means the world to me.
Another beautiful song by the incomparable Tim Minchin.
I could listen to this man's voice forever and never tire or it!
Quit making me cry. I swear, I'll never get rid of this sinus congestion if you keep creating beautiful songs.
This legit teared me up.
I have a partner who lives half the planet away, and god this song captures perfectly how I feel some days. You’re a magician, Tim
Mine is 18000kms away. I know the feeling.
Grateful for them every day.
Be safe and well.
It won’t be forever.
I'm not sure what's more painful; The moment of being in that situation, or my actual situation of not having had anyone for 9 years and being ... depressingly used to it.
Enjoy that longing... as bad as it feels, it's still something beautiful I quite miss on the rare moments I dare to face it.
I've been where you are, my partner and I did 4 years 11000 miles apart, now we live together and I'm trying not to take it for granted every day. You'll get there, it's all worth it in the end x
After more than 6 years been 75% of my time 2000km apart, this song resonate to me. Thanks Tim for making me cry like that
This evokes memories of my late brother-in-law whose relationship with my his wife was a romance which would rival all chic flicks.
When my BIL built their dream home thirty years ago they also built an enormous garage for him to build a light aircraft.
Three small sons grew to manhood and he had not built his light plane, but he did build a beautiful trusting, respectful relationship within entire family.
This relationship soared way above any dizzying height the aircraft could soar.
He went into a coma after suffering headaches all day then passed away, shortly following a brain tumor diagnosis, without saying goodbye to his family.
This song reminds me of that family relationship.
I am sure if there was a way he could built a plane of balsa wood to return to say goodbye, he would.
Beautiful lyrics.
The vocal delivery on “it’s so silly, but…” is divine.
This made me think of my mom and how I miss her. Beautiful song.
If This Plane Goes Down is one of my favourites, and in some ways this feels like a sister song. One about doing anything to be near to someone, and the other about finding solace in the memories a life well spent when the time comes that you no longer can be. Also, and perhaps most importantly, they both have 'plane' in the title.
Beautiful, poignent, graceful, emotional, thoughtful, simple. It could have been written for my Dad. In my heart I sang it to my Dad. Thank you Tim. I love this song. ❤️
I heard this and it made me weep. It was like my estranged, deceased father felt it, Tim channeled, it, and I woke suddenly at 3 am to find it in my feed and heard it. It's funny how a brilliant and talented stranger can create something for a different reason and yet it speaks to you. My dad used to spend hours, days, weeks ignoring his 3 children building his model aeroplanes down in the basement. He worked away from home....was a complex and unusual man. But he was still my father and this song more than any other makes me think of him.
Tim Minchin has written a new song to end concerts with while reminding us that he's deep. As is tradition. I loved it.
Tim, Mr. Minchin thanks for this song. This song speaks to me of lost love, lost ambitions and shared dreams with someone I can never see again in my lifetime. Thank you. Thank you. Thank you and Bravo Sir.
Just heard this beautiful song for the first time. As I listened, the image of my beautiful 25 year-old son came to mind. He died 11 years ago but it still feels like yesterday. Thank you Tim for giving us such a wonderful piece of you.
I love the delicacy and poignancy of this song by Tim, equal parts, conversational, confessional and straight from the heart. The words tumble and cascade with a yearning and are underpinned by a simple, beautiful melody.
Tim's depth of expression-in comedy, drama, JSC, as well as his exquisite musicianship is inspirational. Mad respect for his exceptional musicality prowess, and extreme quality of all he shares with us. Thank you, Tim.
The more I listen to this song the more I want to listen again and again.
Tim M went from being my favourite savy shitposter to my favourite musician and wordsmith. Great listening to your music on long drives across Oz.
This was beautiful in Upright season 2. I truly loved that show. It’s so beautifully written - clever, funny and emotional.
What a lovely and sweet song. Glad to see new content from my favorite Aussie :)
My heart can't take it! I'm seriously going to cry. Another brilliant piece of art.
I am four years a widow. This song caught me off guard tonight. After drying my eyes I immediately learned to play it so now I can cry/sing it anytime. Thank you so much for relatable, beautiful, and hauntingly sad song that gives grief a voice
What a quiet, gentle, perfect thing this song is. Tim Minchin so fully inhabits his humanity: it is rare and wonderful and precious.
Beautiful. Never know what you'll do next but you never fail to reach in through our heads and touch the gooey stuff on the inside xx
Tim makes me nostalgic for times that never were
Tim never paints the canvas with yesterday's paint. Xxx🥰🥰🥰
I think the first time I heard a Tim Minchin song that wasn't comedic was 'Drowned' from the film 'Two Fists, One Heart' nearly a decade and a half ago. Though, while there has been the odd release here and there over the years, I never expected an entire album that stepped away from comedy.
So, when 'Apart Together' came out during the first year of the pandemic, I was blown away. If I had it on vinyl, it would've worn through from the number of times I've listened to that record. And now, a few weeks before I get to see another live Minchin show, this song has come out, plucking at the same heartstrings as the titular single of the aforementioned album did two years ago.
I'm glad to have experienced this side of your writing, Tim. You're a hilarious musical comedian and an equally talented songwriter outside of that field. I'm keen to hear some of these songs at the end of the month. I know it'll be a bit early, but I'll be preparing for the show with a white wine in the sun.
I don’t know how others are finding so many words and thoughts because I’m stunned.
This is perfection, gloriousness, and so beautifully bittersweet.
This song has been on repeat since this morning. It feels like a continuation of Carry You. I will listen over and over til I fully understand and know the lyrics. No one moves me with words like Tim do.
He is a great comedian. He has tried so hard to make a career . Hopefully soon he will get a real chance at stardom.
The live version you did with Asmara is breathtaking. I would urge people to seek out the video. Absolutely stunning.
100% second this!!! Wish they made an official version!
You're in luck,@@vickyfromtheblock3385!

Jeez, Tim... I felt this to the core... Beautifully sad and tragic. And sadly, painfully relatable.😢
As much as I love Tim Minchin's comedy material, this reaches the soul. Simply beautiful!
@Tim Minchin, thank you, from the bottom of our heart's 🌹🌹🌹💐💐💐🙏🙏🙏
This was a song that came out a few month's before my most beautiful mother passed away, which was this past Sunday afternoon. She was only 66 and died of cancer that had riddled her entire beautiful little body. She adored this song, and you.
We will be using this as the main musical piece for her funeral. It's the only thing getting us through.
God Bless you, Tim 💐💐🌹🌹🌹❤️❤️❤️🙏🙏🙏
Wow, this gave me chills, I dedicate this to a special member of the NZDF working in The Ross Dependency. We are missing you xxx
Some people see Tim as just a comedian, but they don't realise he has songs such as this. Being able to switch from the funny to the serious like this is amazing. This song is going on repeat for the foreseeable for me!
Which I don't understand since he turned his back on comedy a decade ago
Love Everything that Tim does and This Song is just Wonderful. Thank You Tim ❤❤❤❤
So seldom to hear this kind of songs: full of tense melody, heart, soul AND meaning.
Touching MY soul, ears, brain and every single cell.
Thank you SO much❤
Take a good dose of nostalgia, loneliness, love, sprinkled with a dose of Aussie humour.... So clever Tim and proud you are a west OZ
Beautiful song Tim.
Good tears streaming down my face.
I just love the way he presents love in his songs
It falls within a bell curve :-)
Tim's talent seems to be limitless. This is such a beautifully written & performed song..
I find all of tims songs insanely profound, yes even if you really loved me, and bears dont dig on dancing. There is a level of seriousness required to pull of that sort of comedy. And i find when you strip away the layers that comedy gives it shows off something really beautiful.
I’m living miles away from my girlfriend, and Tim somehow knows just how to make the distance feel so much worse and yet so much better. A truly beautiful song!
Hey Mattie. I met my wife 20 years ago in Spain. We spent years apart on different continents as everyone told us we were wasting our time. I now have three girls with her. Chin up and don't let anyone tell you it's impossible.
Whatever music Tim makes, be it comedy or dramatic, it will forever be beautiful.
Just rewatched Upright and it’s the best tv show I’ve watched in the last few years
It's so weird that Tim Minchin doesn't know me, when he has been such a part of my life for so long now. Watching this I think "oh hello, my dear friend Tim has made yet another lovely present for us all", and then I remember that "us all" is a vague big pot of people whilst he is a clear individual to us.
I love you, Tim. And thank you for loving us in ways you might not even be aware of 💜
@Fernanda Ortiz; What a poetically articulated and graceful comment of appreciation. You are quite a wordsmith, mate.
@@greatdayn4651 Thank you very much. I live too much in the clouds and this is just my way of surviving this reality, I must say.
Sending you love 💜
When you're trying to explain what makes a skilled lyricist, this is the guy you use as an example in this quarter century.
Now we just need to contrive to get Tim and Neil Gaimen locked in the same room. I don't know what would come out of it, but I'd be first in line to see it.
Man. That hit my soul. My brother took his life a few years ago. We use to work in my woodshop together. Although he was older, he loved learning my passion with me. Boy, if I could, I'd use anything to make a prop that would fly me to wherever he is. Honestly, lovely. Thank you.
If I had the blueprint of the brain.
Tim Minchin is one of the most talented people that I've ever seen. He is as quick witted as Robin Williams was, his comedy is fun to experience and when he is being serious it's especially poignant. I would love to see him and Jack Black do something together, I think they are similar and that their comedy would be complimentary with one another.
Gorgeous. Can’t wait for upright session 2!
Sometimes, we need someone to put words on feelings we have but can't express properly, and I've found out that often times Tim is here to do it for us. Thanks Tim for sharing your view of this silly world with us, but also offer us the way to fully be present in the more important and intimate parts of what it means to be human.
The lullaby holds my heart like a feather but the words squeeze.......oh the words, THE WORDS!
Played this on a Sunday morning and all my feelings have now taken over
Tim Minchin: Delivering the exact music the world needs but noone else will make for it.
Thanks so much, Timbo
This new song just further proves why Tim Minchin's music is so much more than a punch line. He's seriously one of the most interesting and emotional song writers and performers Australia has produced in a very long time. Love album and love this new song too:)
Christ, Tim. What are you doing to us?
A few years ago, illness forced me a couple thousand ks away from my precious found family and all the things I worked for and towards. It took pretty much everything but my daughter (who was a pretty good thing for it to decide to leave me with, really 😉). I've pretty much lived off of white wine in the sun and all it's gut wrenching, delightful friends since.
I've been trying to get home for a visit for 12 months, and I'm fairly certain you just said all the words my heart's been screaming, while simultaneously making me feel kinda bright about it. Magic man.
Absolutely beautiful, as always, but maybe even a little more, as sometimes. New favourite already! Thank you.
I just finished watching Upright season 2. You just had my 42 year old ginger bearded face sobbing big drippy happy tears as I watched you perform this song. What a beauty.
So beautiful. Lyrics, instruments, vocals. 🥹💚
Absolutely lovely and perfect timing. Just travelled back to england from Aus for my grandmas birthday and through all the jetlag and beautiful music you had me balling my eyes out this morning. Thanks Tim, not only for a great song but a song I can use as a memory for this moment, she turns 90 today :)
I think this is your most beautiful song yet.
I honestly didn't think you'd ever write something more beautiful than White Wine in the Sun, but here we are. Please tour again soon, it's been too long and we miss you.
Awesome song. I heard it first in "Upright". The perfect ending for a fantastic show. It Gives me goosebumps every time.
Tim is an absolute genius. The way he writes lyrics is just amazing. Love you Tim ❤️
Tim Minchin, comedy genius, talented writer and singer , what more can we get. 👍
My hero Tim you are so incredible. Love every single piece you write and put out. Just love you and your love story with Sarah.
So proud to be a Perthite like you.
Sending all the love and congratulations Leisa Western Australia xxxx
Close relative was buried today. I didn't expect to stumble upon this today in my feed, but your words and somber melody helped ease it a bit. Thank you.
I could listen to this song for hours. What an incredible voice, and such moving lyrics!
You make the world a better place Tim. I don´t know if it has been your intention from the start, but your brilliant musical and word weaving brain makes people feel. This song is beautiful. Your insight is inspirational. In your speech "9 life lessons" you talk about appraising people, and giving standing ovations....this is my standing ovation! If you ever do a show in Denmark, I´ll be there!
I never thought I'd have my heartstrings tugged so delicately and purposefully by the same person I was introduced to over 15 years ago with "Inflatable You".
I am not worthy to comment on such a musical/comedy genius he is, but will only say that, as much as I can comprehend his talent, he is an outstanding asset to the human race and will be much more appreciated by future generations than current ones.....
And this is gonna be played on loop for the rest of the year. Are you stalking me,Tim? Because this song hits so hard with my current situation
I feel like every song by Tim Minchin is a roll of the dice on making me laugh or making me tear up, but either way it's going in my playlist immediately lmao. The range of this man...
I’ve listened to this song well more than 30 times and I’ve yet to get thru with dry cheeks!!! Come on now!!
What a beautiful song!! This hits me in the feels as hard as very, very few songs have. My gods.
How utterly beautiful, I have gladly battled through my storms to stay with those I love as long as possible.
Yet another gem from Tim. The pen of a poet and the voice of an angel
I just want to put this on repeat. It is lovely
My husband and I have been huge fans of yours forever! Everything you do is brilliant, Tim! We just watched Season 1 of “Upright” here in Ottawa, Ontario, Canada, and marvelled at the acting, music, story! Incredible. ❤
This song is breathtaking!
Oh Tim Minchin, my soul has absorbed this beautiful tune and feels every word. X
I’ve been a Minchin fan since the good old days, back before his first UK tour, and my love for him has never diminished. He’s an incredible artist with great humour and is one of the few people I’d love to sit and have lunch with 😁
Tim's songwriting and voice is always moving. 🥰
Such a beautiful sentiment and song. Damn it... now this and White Wine in the Sun will always make me cry.
I hope you are okay tim, there is some real pained soul vibes in this song. That's why it resonates with me I guess.
The poetry and music combo is really beautiful. Makes me wanna go see tim minchins back even more now
Tim is the lyric master, like how can such a simple song hit so hard? You feel as every word is thought through and is exactly where is supposed to be. I'm so amazed every time I listen to his songs for the first, tenth and a hundredth time
Tim has always been a beautiful talented musician throughout his career, even in his comedy shows the detail of all the music and the cleverness of the lyrics have always stuck with me. This more serious side just brings out just how amazing he is. The emotions conveyed in this song hits you deep in the heart. I’ve always been a fan and always will be
I love Tim Minchin..... 2:50 heard this song and burst into tears... I miss my uncle so much....I would fly to him if I had a choice 😢
SO grateful for every emotional roller coaster ride. We are alive and Tim helps us remember that fact rather than sleepwalking through our lives. So, SO grateful...
