  • Tim Minchin's 13 minute extended Live version of Dark Side (and probably the best version) from his 'Are You Ready For This?' Tour.
    Awesome in every way! Enjoy.
For all official Tim Minchin stuff. (Which this isn't, I'm just a fan)

As a touring lighting director for 23 years I *_really_* love how he integrates the LD into the show with the red lighting and then the haze machine !! The closest I got to that was when at one show the bass player was thanking the crew and forgot me, so when he said _”am I forgetting anyone?”_ I turned all the stage lights off. The mandolin/lead singer caught on, mentioned me and I had the lights explode with delight !!

And the second time they start clapping, off beat, he turns to face them a little bit, and starts stomping his foot in a pretty exaggerated way, so that they all have a visual cue to sink their clapping to! And it works!
Don't think I've ever seen that before.

It’s a cultural thing. Standing ovations are very rare in Australia. Artists get a round of applause and maybe a second round if they come back on quickly but that’s it. They’d better not milk that second round of applause or they’ll find themselves walking off in silence. I’ve seen that more than once.

In Australia, you only stand if you really, REALLY absolutely from the bottom of your heart mean it, because if you stand and clap, the person behind you will jab you in the back and tell you to sit down so they can see! The rule is, unless you are prepared to tell them to get fucked, you're busy cheering, or it's the END OF THE WHOLE CONCERT you arent going to stand.

i swear the people who start this clapping deserve to have a spotlight put on them as they realize their obnoxiousness and stop clapping. even then they NEVER learn, i bet you these fuckers go to multiple concerts and just fucking clap every time. even worse is when a whole group of fuckwits decide to start a mini FUCKING PRESIDENTIAL CAMPAIGN AND DROWN THE GOD DAMN ARTISTS OUT.

being off beat does NOT mean being out of rhythm. playing off beat is not unusual for whole bars, or even entire songs, and for any percussionist worth their weight, is very important. its how the rest of the band can be in 4:4 while the drums are going off in 7:8, and you don't even realize you're hearing two time signatures. but i reckon if you can't tell when a clap is off beat vs not in rhythm, then you'd never realize you're hearing two time signatures.
