16-21 Toyota Tacoma -- Rough Country Low Profile Hard Tri-Fold Tonneau Cover - INSTALLATION & REVIEW

  • The Rough Country low profile hard tonneau cover (Part # 47420600) is an amazing product for the 2016-2021 Tacomas and probably the best practical tonneau/topper option out there for your 3rd Generation Taco. If you like the idea of keeping the full use of your bed but also having a lockable compartment when you need it, then this is for you.
    This tonneau was chosen because it is super easy to install on this 2020 Tacoma TRD Off-Road long bed (Install is the same on the short bed), super easy to remove so you can still haul dirtbikes/motorcycles/tall items in the bed, and when it is installed you have a ton of secure and dry lockable bed/"trunk" space for snowboards/skis, camping equipment, luggage, groceries, etc. The fit and finish are great and everything works perfectly. No complaints!!
    The big downside of this tonneau cover is that it takes over the factory accessory rail completely so you lose two tie-downs. It's not the end of the world because you can add more tie-downs to your 3rd Gen.

    Tacoma using the following products and we will show you what that looks like in a video in the near future:

    --SourceADV.com/...
    Total Chaos Tacoma 2016-2020 Rear Bed Channel Stiffeners and Tie Downs
    --amzn.to/2PFuM1H
    Other problem is that Toyota Tacoma's tailgates do not unlock with the factory fob, even in 2020. So you have to use the tiny key inside the fob which is annoying. So to fix that you can install this product that ties into the factory door lock system to lock/unlock the tailgate easily:
    Pop & Lock PL8535 Pop N 2016-2020 Power Tailgate Lock
    --amzn.to/3anPNpw
    There is a great video out there on how to install this product, just search for it on UA-cam from "Taco Twonz."

  • @Comptonater

    Good review. I received the Gator EFX hard cover, pretty much a carbon copy. Every pro and con is the same. There's no need to drill for drain holes. Get a nipple adapter and attach it to the black hose down to the bottom drain holes. Works like a charm. Not sure about your cover, by mine near the front (where the buckles and drain holes are located) there are slits not covered by the weather stripping so water seeps in. It's not 100% water proof. Bed stays maybe 80% dry. The middle of the bed stays 100% dry. I agree with about the loss of tie down clamps, really a big bummer. Anyways, makes my 4 cylinder more bad azz on the road lol! Oh, and no these covers do not improve mpg, that has been researched and debunked.

    • @SourceADV
      @SourceADV  3 роки тому +1

      The myth is that dropping the tailgate increases MPG, that is not true. But Tonneaus do typically lead to a 1.8% increase in gas mileage at highway speeds.

    There isn't any wind-drag on tailgates anymore, designers have engineered the aerodynamics of trucks over the last 20 years to avoid this. Google mythbusters video and many others that have test this, so you're all good there. Thx for the vid man, I'm ordering one for my Tacoma based on this review.

    • @SourceADV
      @SourceADV  4 роки тому +1

      That is true as compared to having the tailgate down, but tonneau covers add roughly 6-10% increase of MPG, especially if you do a lot of driving above 70-80 MPH (like we do here in Colorado). You are totally right as compared to putting the tailgate down though. Take care!

    • @SourceADV

      Hey Hanna, it basically runs run to the ground down the side of the composite bed. There is a ton of space in between the composite bed and the painted steel bedsides, if it’s raining and you are driving, there is a lot more moisture getting up in there than what is coming out of the drains. Super picky when it comes to hawaii shipping. Some places don't even ship here even though it's basically taco island 🏝️.

    • @SourceADV
      @SourceADV  3 роки тому +1

      No problem! Its still working out great. With the drain tubes, you could just run some smaller hose down to the holes in the bottom corner of the bed and just let it drain from there, but they are much smaller and could get clogged. Im not sure what would happen if you just capped the drains off, but thats definitely an option and at least you wont run into freezing issues in Hawaii. Let me know how it goes!

    I was told ALL covers leak on ALL Toyotas, due to Toyota manufacturing. IS THIS TRUE?

    • @SourceADV
      @SourceADV  4 роки тому

      The bed itself has a lot of different pieces, it’s modular like legos, so there are a lot of places for water to get in besides just rain coming in. I notice water coming in from the tire spray sometimes which has nothing to do with the cover. You could seal it with putty, but it will be a fair amount of work. The cover is great for rugged items, but the bed will never be a perfect trunk

      Honestly, it doesn’t matter if it does or doesn’t, where the tub of the bed meets the top rail pours water in on the back left corner because it doesn’t have that little cubby to block wheel spray like the passenger side. You’d have to got through and seal the rest of the bed before you’d know whether or
      Not the cover leaked.

    can you elaborate about what you think this means in the company description? "...or roll it all the way up and attach the durable storage straps and continue along your way with the cover in the open position." It certainly sounds like they are saying the 3rd fold was supposed to fold up against the cab giving you full exposure to your bed. (But covering your back window) However, there is no hinge at the far end and also those clamps you mounted would stop the last section from lifting.

    • @SourceADV
      @SourceADV  4 роки тому

      Hello 42Bill, I just saw that on their description on the product page, that is definitely a typo and probably accidently came over from one of their soft tonneau covers. This one does not roll up. You can fold it all the way forward and regain 2/3 of your bed or just pull the 4 clamps off and remove the whole cover. Hope that helps!!

      It folds on top of itself, not vertical to the back window. It gives you about 4 feet of open space in the long bed. If you need the whole bed to be open you can just unscrew the four hand nuts in about 45 seconds and remove the whole thing folded up. I just lean it against the wall in my garage. Hope that helped!

    • @SourceADV
      @SourceADV  4 роки тому +1

      Chris Martins no leaks under normal operation! The bed still leaks behind the left rear tire from throwing water/mud up from the tire. It hits the top rail seem then seeps down the side of the bed by the left rear corner. This has been happened from day 1 with the truck. The cover does not leak though with rain.
      I did run it through one of those high pressure car washes and got a little water in the bed, not as much as expected... I don’t think it was designed to take 90 psi right angle water Hahahaha. I still love it! I put everything in the back in bins that can’t get wet and then don’t worry at all. At the end of the day it’s the bad design of the bed in the back left corner that lets in a bunch of water.
      Hope that helps, take care!

      Tacomas do not have bed liners. The whole bed is plastic, there is no metal underneath other than the frame of the truck. The whole underside of the truck is getting blasted with water when you are driving in the rain, a few drops from these tubes is not going hurt anything. These plastic beds already have little weep holes in the front corners of the bed for water which go to the same place basically.
