Let's kick off a brand new season with a question... What truck do you own right now? (or trucks if you have more than one!!)
I was convinced I wanted the second cover and kept trying to stash away extra money for one. After awhile I simply purchased the a model like the first one you installed in the video. It has been great. Never an issue, only leaks slightly in a high pressure car wash, never leaks in rainy situations at all. When I want full use of my bed it just comes off in like 5 minutes. One day I did an unplanned furniture purchase. Took off the cover behind the furniture store, put the two piece sectional inside, threw the folded cover in the back, and strapped everything down. So simple, flexible and easy. I would totally do the first option again and again knowing I never leave any valuables in the bed anyway.
@@travisa1326 Mine has held up very well in my opinion. In my neck of the woods we see High 90's in the summer and sometimes below freezing in the winter. For the cost it looks like it will last over two years maybe closer to four. At that point if it got too weathered I would buy another one.
I purchased the retractable cover for my F250. Having used it for a few years now, I’ve decided I’m going with option 2 (hard/fold) for my incoming pickup. The retractable version ended up being impractical, heavier, and took up too much bed space. Option 2 makes the most sense, especially with the ability to fold it all the way up while driving. Great review btw, you helped me firm up the decision.
I'd pick the Gator ETX over the the tri fold model. It's at about the same price point. The thing I like about that one is it doesn't cover the stake pockets. I want to add bed rails to mine. The other 2 are made by the same company as BAK and Truxedo. If you watch videos for those, you'll see all of the rails and hardware are exactly the same.
If not the best how to one of the best how to videos I have viewed on UA-cam. Also an unbiased evaluation of the products . I ended up with an SFX since I do not want a full time cover. Saved me money and installation time getting a product I can take off when not required which is my situation most of the time. I am a supporting subscriber of Truck Central.
One thing I'd like to point out, is, for the hard folding cover, because it can only be opened from the inside it doesn't need it's own lock. The lock on the tailgate protects the latch, and therefore if your gate is locked so is your cover. It is plenty secure.
I have the 2nd cover on my Chevy Colorado. Use it constantly and it works like a charm. I can choose not to latch the last section or mid and last for bulky loads. Since you need access to the release cords once the tailgate is locked it's secure and out of sight gives peace of mind. Thanks for the review.
I had the cheap gator trifold on my Ram and it was great, goes on and off in a couple minutes once you get good at it. Recently I bought a really cheap Tyger soft roll up cover for my Tacoma and it's way better built, easy to install, and never has to be taken off. I'm never spending $500-$1000+ on a bed cover, I'll stick with soft rollups from now on.
I've had varies covers for different trucks. I had a snap on cover for my Dodge Ram. That one was nice because it was easily removable. But in the winter months you had to take it off or on, I had to put it in the sun so it would stretch to snap it back on. My 2nd cover was a roll top cover I had on my 2011 Silverado. It also was easy to take on and off (open and close). But I had issues with it leaking. My 3rd cover I love the best, I bought a Diamond Back cover for my 2016 Silverado and this thing is tough. It's the most expensive but no leaks, and it's indestructible. It comes in 3 pieces, and it's held on with 4 clamps. There is video's out there that this cover is nearly impossible to break into. The HD Edition can hold up to 2500 lbs on top and you can still open your tailgate. Great video guys. I've ordered from Real Truck before, and they are amazing.
I have the gator soft folding (I think it’s the same one in the video) and it seems to be pretty water tight. I went on a 5 hour road trip and it was pouring rain the entire way and my luggage was dry when I opened the tailgate. There’s probably a couple spots where a little water could get in but it stays dry for the most part
Thanks for this review. It has made my decision a lot easier for which one I want installed on my truck. Definitely going with the 2nd option. I love how sleek it looks and still allows me to have bed rails installed. 😊
Thank you for you views on these tonneau covers. I'v been wrecking my brain on which one to get and with your help I have chosen the FX model. I think that will be my best option for daily use. i wish you had an active discount code lol.
Excellent review. I actually bought the second and it was fantastic but after about 7 years the material between the metal sheeting started to get water logged to the point that it was extremely heavy to use. Framing also started to loosen up making it tougher to align to close. I do admit it was fantastic up to that point. Worked great for my fifth wheel and was easy to use and secure.
Ive had the first option for about 3 years now, its held up really well and doesnt leak at all. Its by Tyger but functions the exact same as the one you showed. Lightweight, cheap and easy to use. You cant go wrong with any of the three, just depends on your budget,
Is it pretty solid at highway speeds in terms of flapping in the wind? I never even thought of getting one of these but the ease of taking it completely on and off can be a huge benefit.
Thanks for the details. I had a low end soft cover that lasted about 4yrs until it blew off while driving high speed on a highway...yea, that happened. Fortunately, no one or thing was hurt. Now finding the "better" products on the market today are making it challenging to be satisfied due to a lack of them being 'simple'. Also, finding deck rail systems from the truck manufacturer are playing into the install and functionality of these current covers. May just stay with a cheap cover again. Easy install, full use of the stock deck rail, and easy to remove when needing the full bed....
The hard folding covers are the best in my opinion. If you have a locking tailgate they are very secure. Easy to open close and offer the most available bed space.
the mid grade second option one looks to be the best option, full access to bed and looks sleek. the third option is expensive and losing full access to the bed (especially on 5ft beds) is a non starter in my books.
Great video! You really helped make my decision. I'm downsizing from a Tundra to a Tacoma. I was really considering the retractable cover, however you really hit home the room I would lose if I did that. I'm already losing a sizable space from downsizing to a smaller truck. I will definitely be going with a tri-fold hard shell cover. Good job on your video and I'll be looking at the rest of your videos because of the good job you did on this one!
Best video I’ve seen. Everything you said was directly related to the product and to the content of the video. You didn’t talk just because you could or to hear yourself talk. Very professionally done, Thanks!!
Thank you for the video! I appreciate the well explained intro of each model 👍 ! My comment to the manufacturer: 1. The basic version can have a better folding design, instead of the existing tri-fold design make it a Z-fold design so the inside/under side of the cover never face against the outer/upper side collecting dust... 2. The middle MX model, instead of the two clearly visible "manual" rods to prop the cover open, they can be relocated to the end of the cover (behind the rear window) so the mechanisms (rods & secure screws) are less visible. 3. The most expensive version, for the price, the design could at the least also include a self retraction (i.e. spring loaded like a roll-up window blind and cab stop at any position etc.) function so make it more worthy of $2k. Sincerely.
Good comparisons! I like that you cover install/uninstall times. Don’t have a truck yet but still shopping and looking at various cover/rack options (and how much they weigh).
Thanks for the video... I´m in for getting a bed cover and I had seen the Gator models on Truck Central´s website... I thought I wanted the trifold but after your review now I know I want the trifold! I mostly want it to keep the leaves out of my bed and the occasional grocery run with my wife... (yes, if given the space she will fill a pickup at Costco). Great video!!! Oh, and I have a 2005 Chevy Silverado with 62k miles and 2 light character scratches.
For me it would have to be the 2nd one also because I have a toolbox in my 8ft bed so I need to have access to that plus it already limits what kind of cover I could put on.
Thank you for your hard work! Loved the video and I agree on your choice. I have a 2017 Titan I have to cover because I tow my RV and need protection from the elements and the greedy common public!
I just purchased a 2020 GMC Canyon and, lucky me, it came with the REV trifold cover, essentially the same unit as the Gator FX. It's a very nice addition to the truck: not waterproof, but definitely keeps most of the water out. Secure enough to guard against the casual thief. I will probably use it either fully closed or fully open, the latter when carrying a bike or two. Still have some experimentation to do in that regard.
Cheaper one is the best imho you can take it off if you need to on the fly by yourself usually someone isnt goin to cut into your top just to see what you have and it's 1/4th the cost my 2 cents
Soft covers don't last, specially not if you open and close it every day. I've had 3 covers so far. My soft truxedo cover is the only purchase I regret
I just bought and installed the cheap one and it was super easy to install and would be easy to remove if full bed access is needed. I'm pretty happy with it.
I got the Gator soft one and paid less than $200 from real truck. Nissan Titan. Its held very well, no water gets through despite living in a rainy climate. Definitely worth it if you don’t want to spend money. I’ve seen vids of expensive ones that leaked water. I also purchased it because it’s easy to take off and on. If I need to move furniture or something, take off, then put back on.
Hello, good to hear that it doesnt leak! I'm leaning towards the Gator soft one too. I plan to nomad out of my truck (sleeping in driver's seat). Do you think the soft cover is secure enough to hold some not terribly expensive tools, clothes and some foods? Or does it feel fragile and will easily razor through like this youtuber mentioned?
I’d love to see a long term review of the middle grade tonneau cover. I used to have the cheap trifold one and it worked great. But the vinyl wore out after like 5 years and then I needed to get a new one.
@@LuisRodriguez-ib3cc the one I had bought had like a 3 year warranty. Either way I got my money out of it from daily use. I replaced it with money out of my own pocket
I don’t understand all the complaints when the cover is all the way open and blocks the rear window. Like guys, if you need that much space, chances are that the cargo is blocking your view anyways.
I agree with the way you rated them. 2nd is my first choice and 1st is my second choice. The loss of bed space and inability to quickly remove the third makes the expense not justified to me.
I went with a roll up style for $180 on Amazon for my 2014 Ram with a 6’4 bed. Works great in rain, no leaks. Since my truck sits in the garage and it’s not my DD it should last a long time.
The lower tri-fold optionI bought for my wife’s 1500. It was great except be careful as a gust of wind flipped it back causing damage to it just as she was folding it back. It still seals well and works, but you can definitely tell. One of those freak things , but just FYI.
Excellent idea for a video. I’ve been wanting a Locking tonOh cover or at a minimum a theft deterrent for stuff in the back if I have to stop en route to a customer. But I like the GatorFX one best. The #2 It’s a great compromise of loss of bed area and a hard shell cover.
I have the exact soft one he reviewed and I love it. I was on a 5 hour road trip this summer and it stormed the entire drive and my luggage and everything in the bed stayed dry
Second one is back-flip knock off. That said it is the clear winner. On mysecond one. First one lasted 7 years before the sun destroyed the material. I'll take seven years of service. I like that you can sit on the cover if it is folded even once. I like to fold it twice to put on my muck boots when hunting. Or to just hang and eat a snack or something while in the field. It also works great for hauling my quad. protects window from any back window accidents. This cover is also lockable if youe tailgait locks as the tailgait needs to be open in order to access the cover. Lastly along the lines of having room on the sides for his handhold to get up. The backflip design has availability for a cargo rack. So i can haul my quad and my conoe at the same time without taking off the cover. All in all the back flip design is a clear winner for me.
I bought a new garage door for my small shop in my back yard. Weird size 20x18, got a new opener for it installed too, grand total 2100 bucks. 2 years ago now. Let that sink in
Thanks for all the work you did to put this together..!! I generally, only carry loose items, or maybe some weekend gear for camping or boating, so just being Out of Sight is good enough.. BUT if a boat or jet-ski is in tow... some people might get curious. But as you sort of touched on, I carry motorcycles rather often. and they are pretty close to 7 feet long by the time you include the tires and wheels. So I NEED the full 6' 4" of length, even with the tail-gate down. So all of the space used to stow the fold-up and roll-up makes it next to impossible to get a street bike loaded. But the basic one, I can take off and lay it beside the bike(s) during transit. And I would not want to travel with the back window blocked, so I can not see the bikes. (I drive Semi's, buses, and lots of other vehicles, so I am very capable with mirrors. But I like to be sure that bikes are riding stable... So your information is Very Helpful. Thanks again.
I had the middle one. It was great but the stabilizer bars to hold it in full open position get sticky. I had to use pliers to loosen them up on occasion
#2! I'm looking for a good solid cover that looks good not overlapping the edge of the bed and secure. It needs to not block bed space to be able to tie dirtbikes down in the front so its looking like number 2 is the clear choice. I wish it didn't block the window when open but it doesn't look like that would be possible.
I really appreciate the review of all 3 covers. This will definitely help me make a decision on which type I should purchase. I love the last one because of low profile and ease of its retraction/folding. But the 2nd I like just as you stated because of getting full access of space of the truck bed as opposed to the last one where you lose a foot. Thanks again!!!
I have #3. I love it. Yes it's expensive but I can leave things in the back of my truck and not have to worry about something getting stolen. I don't like #2 because it blocks your back window if you have it all the way up.
I went diamond back and never looked back, way more aggressive but I got used to it. Completely weather proof and you can use the top of it without scratching or ruining it
@@Yeahyeah116 I was simply letting the OP know that not everyone likes the Diamond Back design. If he asked to know why, I would tell him. Is that a problem for you?

I had the 1st style a Tyger vinyl cover and the last but mine was a roll & lock. I liked both but the roll and lock was much cooler and better. The mid grade in the video looked very practical 👍
I've owned both a retractable one on a truck and a used soft tri fold. I found that the soft tri fold kept things dry and never got messed with. So it kept things out of sight out of mind. I normally keep a multi function ladder in my bed. So on my latest 2020 f150 lariat, I went with a brand new Tyger trifold soft cover. It was easy to install and I know I can easily take it off in a moment should I need to. It currently looks great and my last f150 had a soft trifold that was at least 4 years old and was a bit dull looking, but I never treated it or conditioned it at all. With my retractable, I was NOT taking that thing off casually.
@@michalp2362 the fabric can be seen to ripple some at high speeds, but it's minor. It is definitely NOT like hearing a flapping flag behind me or anything. I still don't regret saving myself the money. Way more than dry enough for anything I'm going to keep back there. My only teeny gripe with this cover is that I can't flip it up vertical (cover up back window) to get access to my entire bed, but it isn't much to take it off if need be. So still no regrets.
@@TheRPhelps24 glad to hear it’s not loud. noisy flapping was my main concern. I actually see the ease of removing it without any tools as more beneficial than the option to put it up against the rear window.
Id take a number 2 over any of the others. I like to be able to place a motorcycle in the bed as forward a possible to the cab and be able to possibly close the tailgate.
you should check out fas-top, they make a great tonneau and have the option of having a soft-top topper that will stow away for a tonneau to cover it and can also be removed if you dont want it to take up the bed space. Best tonneau i've used, great for camping, hunting, fishing. etc.
😎🇺🇸 Hey Nick great review👍 I have the 3rd option that rolls not that basic model but mine is not water proof it will leak. I like the one you installed on your truck, have a great day ✌️
The tarp option is tempting because of the price but I wouldn’t trust it for security purposes. Seams easily accessible by cutting through it with a knife. Still trying to decide on which one to get for my truck.
Not sure about the rambox, but you can swap out the brackets in the bed and be able to install any cover with the multi-function tailgate. rightonbracket.com/product/ram-truck-bed-brackets/
Very informative video. I have the Gator FX on my ‘20 Ranger. I like it a lot. It does leak a little in the back corners by the tailgate in heavy rain. It is nice that it folds up against the cab if needed for nearly complete bed access without having to remove it.
I’m considering the FX and appreciate your comment on the water tightness. I will be towing a travel trailer and would be storing equipment that I would like to keep as dry as possible- generator, chairs, grill, etc. Do you think extra weatherstripping would help? Also, how secure is the cover with the tailgate locked?
@@b737driver8 we had very heavy rain a few days ago. I looked and sure enough there was water inside by the tailgate. I saw a drop hanging from the drain channel so that is probably the source. Not sure what to do about that- the water has to get out, especially in the winter. I did not see water anywhere else so storing things away from the tailgate might be the best option.
Sorry I did not answer your other question regarding security. Near as I can tell it is secure. It someone wants to get in they will, but it would take some effort. It is probably as secure as it could be given what it is.
Good review of options. I have the soft (1st) cover and it works fine for my gooseneck on an 8 ft bed. I can't comment on 6.5 ft one. Gooseneck takes less space than 5th wheel but my B&W 5th wheel adapter also fits under and is operational when folded up. When my tri-fold soft top wears out I'll get the second one you reviewed. I like that it locks down in several positions and provides better security when fully closed. Also doesn't cover hand holds! I'll have to measure to make sure the 5th wheel adapter will fit under it but it should. 3rd cover should work for trailering but I carry my fuel jugs for racing under the folded front cover and I can't afford to lose that much bed space. Plus, for that much money it's not even electric! Update: Discovered the Gator FX is not made for an 8 ft bed.

Just an idea, but maybe you could install a camera somehow to see back there when the second cover is folded against the glass.Like a backup camera device if you really wanted to see since it blocks the rearview mirror. Great video and nice red truck by the way.I like those Chevrolet letters on your bed rails. 🥰👍🇺🇲
Ram and gmc offer a rear view mirror camera. The camera is by the third brake light and the rear view mirror has a screen in it. Don't even need to see through the back glass.

Glad it was helpful and thanks for watching! *Here is the follow-up video:* ua-cam.com/video/heiddsOH6og/v-deo.html
Best video I’ve seen. Everything you said was directly related to the product and to the content of the video. You didn’t talk just because you could or to hear yourself talk. Very professionally done, Thanks!!
Nicely done. I too prefer the 2nd tonneau cover b/c of price and ease of installation. Have a fine week. 👍🏽🙂
Great video man. Very informative and helped me decide which cover is best for me. Thanks
Love the video. I am looking for a bed cover, I would probably go with the first on.
Thank you for the great information ❤❤ I will go with the second tonneau cover !
Excellent video guys! You’ve helped me pick option #2 for my first truck.
Thank you for the video! I appreciate the well explained intro of each model 👍 !
My comment to the manufacturer:
It's definitely the second one for me also! Thanks! 👍🏾
The cheapest one is perfect for the quick cover needed for here and there
Great comparison! My vote is for the expensive option 3. Looks and works great!
Great review man. I can appreciate the time and effort it took to film this all day
Thank you for your hard work!
Definitely a win when your truck comes with the exact mods you want! Enjoy your new truck 🍻
Thank you for this video!! I really needed to actually see how they really work !!! Thank you thank you!!!
@@Maybelove88 no, it’s definitely not for security. You need something hard for that. You can easily cut this if you want.
@@gobucs3146 ok thanku
Awesome review brother. Thank you👌🏾🙏🏾👊🏾
I’d love to see a long term review of the middle grade tonneau cover. I used to have the cheap trifold one and it worked great. But the vinyl wore out after like 5 years and then I needed to get a new one.
Did you replace it out of pocket or used the 10 year warranty?
@@LuisRodriguez-ib3cc the one I had bought had like a 3 year warranty. Either way I got my money out of it from daily use. I replaced it with money out of my own pocket
I don’t understand all the complaints when the cover is all the way open and blocks the rear window. Like guys, if you need that much space, chances are that the cargo is blocking your view anyways.
I have a 2022 Frontier Pro- X. I liked the second cover. Thank you for the information.
Every time he claps, take a drink
I'm wasted.

Videos like this one MUST be made. 👍

Hi Richard, I'm leaning towards gettung the soft tri-fold! Did your wife experience any attempts at theft? Just a bit concerned about security.
Thank you for doing this. I’m a new pick up truck owner and this was helpful.
Excellently done video! Explained each one thoroughly!
Great reviews with all information that clearly to understand. Thank you
I'm a fan of the looks price and ease of use of the soft tri fold.
I like the second one because you can use the full bed
Excellent idea for a video. I’ve been wanting a Locking tonOh cover or at a minimum a theft deterrent for stuff in the back if I have to stop en route to a customer.
But I like the GatorFX one best. The #2 It’s a great compromise of loss of bed area and a hard shell cover.
I have a tri fold soft cover from a company called Tyger
Great cover for the money
So far it survived 3 northern New Hampshire winters zero problems
Just got my Tyger Soft Tri-Fold today. Installing it after work. For my needs, I just couldn't justify triple the cost for the Hard Tri-Fold.
@@gordiehattrick cool ,you will like it
I have the exact soft one he reviewed and I love it. I was on a 5 hour road trip this summer and it stormed the entire drive and my luggage and everything in the bed stayed dry
I have the Tyger as well. Doesn’t leak at all, not even thru a car wash. About $250 for my 8’ bed.
@@RealEyezRealLiez wow even through a car wash! Great info for ne. Thanks
A well put together video. Thanks for taking the time to make it.👍
Can’t go wrong with the Tyger t3 trifold. Cheap, easy on/off and tough.
Gator is actually owned by bakflip so not exactly a "knock-off"... Like saying Sierra is a knockoff of Silverado...
Seems the 3rd cover would work for a towing a 5th wheel when it's open, and closed for shopping trips.
Good review bro! 2nd one will be the one for me as well.
I agree the 2nd cover.
#2! I'm looking for a good solid cover that looks good not overlapping the edge of the bed and secure. It needs to not block bed space to be able to tie dirtbikes down in the front so its looking like number 2 is the clear choice. I wish it didn't block the window when open but it doesn't look like that would be possible.
Hey Which bed cover did you purchase. I’m looking at the trifold Gator or maybe BakFlip.
@@josephpuchel6497 I got the Bakflip rolling one and really like it
I really appreciate the review of all 3 covers. This will definitely help me make a decision on which type I should purchase. I love the last one because of low profile and ease of its retraction/folding. But the 2nd I like just as you stated because of getting full access of space of the truck bed as opposed to the last one where you lose a foot. Thanks again!!!
Doesn't say much about the company when the cheapest cover has the best warranty. For 1700 it should be at least 10 warranty.
Freemason
I have #3. I love it. Yes it's expensive but I can leave things in the back of my truck and not have to worry about something getting stolen. I don't like #2 because it blocks your back window if you have it all the way up.
I went diamond back and never looked back, way more aggressive but I got used to it. Completely weather proof and you can use the top of it without scratching or ruining it
I do not like the diamond back cover design.
@@RealEyezRealLiez that was a very informative comment.
@@Yeahyeah116 I was simply letting the OP know that not everyone likes the Diamond Back design. If he asked to know why, I would tell him. Is that a problem for you?
@@RealEyezRealLiez He bought it. He already stated he got used to the look. Who cares whether you like it or not, especially when you don’t offer any explanation? Your comment was useless...hence, my comment.
@@Yeahyeah116 He was promoting a brand and design that wasn’t even featured in this video. I only stated that I for one don’t agree with his choice. I didn’t feel the need to counter his every reason for one of mine or go into a long explanation of my opinion unless pressed. Obviously you’re the only person that thinks I should’ve. It sounds like you have this deep and profound desire to know more about my thoughts and opinions on the diamond back design. You’re free to ask questions...
I had the 1st style a Tyger vinyl cover and the last but mine was a roll & lock. I liked both but the roll and lock was much cooler and better. The mid grade in the video looked very practical 👍
Awesome video! My favorite one is the second one
Any issues with the soft trifold flapping in the wind?
These are some cool covers
Id take a number 2 over any of the others. I like to be able to place a motorcycle in the bed as forward a possible to the cab and be able to possibly close the tailgate.
you should check out fas-top, they make a great tonneau and have the option of having a soft-top topper that will stow away for a tonneau to cover it and can also be removed if you dont want it to take up the bed space. Best tonneau i've used, great for camping, hunting, fishing. etc.
thanks for the info because i am not sure at all which one to get because there's so many choices and options.
The first one looks the best on the truck and easy to use
Any recommendations on different price levels of covers for a 5'7 bed with RamBox and Mutifunction tailgate? I would really want to see that video!
I appreciate seeing all the different types. Thanks.
Thanks very much, that was good information. It's nice to see how the install goes and your impressions.
I put a revolver bak on in 2016 cloth fell off underside vinyl peeling back.BAK offered half of a new one and flat 54 dollars shipping. I just ordered a gator sf from real truck. chatted and they gave me 264.41 total tax shipping purchase 10 years warranty vinyl lifetime hardware.thank you fellas
Nice ass truck too man!
This is great for me to open all the way with the middle option as I have a camera for my rear-view mirror
