  • I decided it was time to turn this Catalpa. I have looked at it for 7 years every time I look around my pole building for the next turning.
So I did it and happy with how it turned out.

Thank you Doug. When I think about it they guy had it advertised as free wood but when I got there the whole tree was laying on the ground and covered in grass and weeds. So now what ????? He offered to cut a chunk off so I too took that. Kind of a shame because the wood does not seem to crack from sitting around. Glad I got what I did.

Ok. River otter head (in its den) looking left at the roots in the river bank. Catalpa can be easy to turn, or completely obnoxious when over ripe. Glad you got a good piece. One of my favorite Catalpas is at a lavender farm near Sequim. Those leaves are HUGE!

Sounds interesting Valerie. Sadly I did not see the leaves on this on. Looked like it had been down for many years. If I could remember where I got it I would see if the tree is still there. Not all that far from me.

We have 3 large (50 foot) Catalpa trees on our property. I have turned several pieces from cutoffs and dead falls. When leaves are off during winter, the tree branches resemble something from an old Hitchcock movie. Can be creepy.
BTW, ACE Hdwr stores carry the shellac sealer. Other box stores (orange, blue or green) do not.

@@ThePapa1947 I used denatured alcohol I got from Home Depot. Use any high purity stuff you can get for a good price. Got my flakes from Rockler but you can probably get it cheaper elsewhere. The flakes dissolve quicker when the alcohol is warmed. Use a heat source thats not an open flame, heating pad, warming zone on the electric stove, even a sunny location on a window sill. One pound cut is one dry ounce of flakes to 8 ounces of alcohol.
