  • In JUST THIS ONCE (1952), Lucille Duncan (Janet Leigh) has been hired to oversee the finances of young playboy Mark MacLene (Peter Lawford), who gets $1,000,000 a year from a trust, but spends it as fast as he makes it. In this scene, Lucille forces Mark to go for a frugal lunch at the Automat instead of lunching at his usual spot, the tony eatery Pierre's.

    I went there as an 11 year old kid with my aunt in 1955! Thought it was so cool. It was so “automatic” a cool word in those days😂

    My mother told me how she used to eat at the automat when she was young. Gravy on a slice of bread! Times were hard, but people appreciated things more.

    There is another interesting Automat scene in a movie made around the same time as this one called "A Catered Affair" with Bette Davis and Debbie Reynolds, although that scene is rather dramatic. By the way some of you may recognize the young busboy reserving the table, he was the same kid who portrayed the Macy's janitor who befriended Edmund Gwen's Santa Claus character in "Miracle on 34th St.".

    0:40. What a smooth operator. Dude tips a guy to set him up next to the window at an Automat. She will fall for him for sure.

    Heavens to Murgatroid ! Never heard of this 1952 MGM romantic comedy till now. Looks rather routine but according to wikipedia it make a tidy profit for the studio. Of course it was the early 50s & a lot of people still couldn't afford TV sets. Thanks for uploading !! 🙂

    I believe the young man who saved the table in the scene was the same actor who was trying to play Santa Claus in "Miracle On 34th Street." He acted with Edmund Gwenn.

      That was Alvin Greenman, who had a many-decades-long career in the industry both in front of and behind the camera. He actually appeared as a character named "Alfred" in both versions of" Miracle on 34th Street," the store janitor in the 1947 version and the doorman in the 1994 version. He died in 2016 at the age of 86.

    So, since he never ate there before I'm surprised that busboy recognized him. That must have been one heck of a tip.

    Wonder why Lawford says the sandwich is delicious before he takes a bite? He didn't say the sandwich looks delicious, he says "oh it (sandwich) *is* delicious" then gulps it down.

  • @conscience-commenter

    The $10 tip Lawford gave to the bus boy is the equivalent of $116 dollars today which is why he fawned all over him .

    That’s only a Hollywood automat. Look up ‘A Touch of Mink’ with Grant and Doris Day for the real deal.

    • @CladriteRadio
      @CladriteRadio  Рік тому

      No need to "look up" A Touch of Mink; there's a clip from it on this channel. And very few Automat scenes from before 1960--very few interiors of any type- were filmed on location. Nonetheless, this scene captures the atmosphere of the Automat effectively.
