    Lyrics:
Breathing from a hole in my lung
    I had no one
But faces in front of me
Racing through the void in my head
    To find traces
    Of a good luck academy
    Ooh, Ooh, Ooh
Sparks ignite and trade them for thought
    About no one
    And nothing in particular
Washed the sickened socket and drove
    Resent nothing
There's good will inside of me
    Ooh, Ooh, Ooh
Wake me up lower the fever
    Walking in a straight line
Set me on fire in the evening
    Everything will be fine
Waking up strong in the morning
    Walking in a straight line
    Lately I'm a desperate believer
But walking in a straight line
    Something I will never forget
    I felt desperate
    And stuck to the marrow
    Invisible to everyone else
    I'm a sex change
And a damsel with no heroine
    Ooh, Ooh, Ooh
Wake me up lower the fever
    Walking in a straight line
Set me on fire in the evening
    Everything will be fine
Waking up strong in the morning
    Walking in a straight line
    Lately I'm a desperate believer
But walking in a straight line
I don't need no time to say
    There's no changing yesterday
    If we keep talking and
I keep walking in straight lines
Wake me up lower the fever
    Walking in a straight line
Set me on fire in the evening
    Everything will be fine
Waking up strong in the morning
    Walking in a straight line
    Lately I'm a desperate believer
But walking in a straight line

This song was a bitter pill to swallow when it came out. It takes years to fully appreciate this songs complexity. Daniel Johns has to be one of Australia's greatest songwriters.

Totally! I was too immature to appreciate the genius behind this song and the album when it came out. I think I was 17.
When you're young, you wear your music like fashion. You make it a part of your identity. And are militant to defend it. And, well, heaven forbid an artist introduces you to something unexpected!
Luckily, for some of us, musical taste matures, we explore and wander. Broadening our depth. Allowing ourselves to be surprised and delighted by new musical experiences.
It's only then, that you reach musical nirvana. Amen!

I was 20 when they came outta nowhere & blew up so massively. Liked em but wasnt as swept up as many others were. This song, however many years later really grabbed me. They now sounded like a band that found their own groove. Brilliant!

This is clearly a well done song -- it's drastically different from some of my favorites from Silverchair however I can see how people can really like this number. It's not really for me but I feel some of the magic Daniel Johns was referring to when he plays with his band. He's being true to himself and I certainly can't fault him for that! I think that's all we could ever ask of the artists we patronize.

I have literally been trying to find this damned song for nearly 10 years. It played once on either MTV2 or Fuse I believe one day when I was skipping class back in high school and I didn't write their name down in time. Every time I'd try and explain the uplifting tempo of the song, the look of the frontman, or the setting & movement of the video, people would always tell me in a matter-of-fact fashion that I was looking for the song "Fix You" by Coldplay. No matter which of my musician friends I asked or which forum I submitted a query to, everyone always gave me that same song & band as an answer, and I would always tell them they were dead wrong. I even went as far as finding & scouring archived program schedules for MTV2 & Fuse from 2005 to 2009 trying to find ANY picture or name that would point me in the right direction, but to no avail. Flash forward to today, where I'm doing music curation for the music platform I work for VIBBIDI, and in the suggested videos for Swervedriver I see the cover-image of this video. I haven't felt this accomplished in years, and I'm ecstatic that this song still sounds good to me so many years later.

I know exactly what you mean. I tried to explain a Muse song (didnt know the band) maybe year 2000 to real muso head friends, no one got me, then we all got to see Muse in around 2005 and I was like - there you go! This is who I was talking about! Muse wouldnt be one of my favourites but it was just one song stuck in a moment, stuck in my head! Glad you found it. It's a profound song and he literally means "walking in a straight line" after being debilitated by reactive arthritis and on a wheelchair!

I'm an Aussie and my ex is an American. I'd played her a bunch of old Aussie standards, bands like Cold Chisel, Icehouse, Midnight Oil, The Models, really good stuff. She was a bit underwhelmed though she loved John Farnham's _You're The Voice._
She asked me to play her what I thought was a truly great song from an Australian band.
So, yeah, I played her this.
I explained it was a song about kicking an addiction. She was quickly attentive and almost stunned. She got goosebumps all over when the guitars finally came in. Then she was dancing and laughing. It made a tremendous and lasting impression on her. Straight Lines has a raw power and warm energy that's accessible to anyone at all who's ever faced addiction, hardship, grief, loss or emotional pain. It's beautifully healing and wonderful, it speaks of hope and love and speaks straight to the heart.

i could never understand all the hatred. sure, a lot of people say they were young when it came out, and that's why they couldn't grasp it, or that it was too far removed from their heavier stuff. so many people are so narrow-minded. it's too bad because they're missing out on some exceptionally amazing music.
when i heard this song (and album) for the first time, i thought, this is our generations st peppers, and instantly loved it. there will never be another concept album like young modern, and to this day, it remains one of my faves and go to.

This song brings back memories from when it first came out. When I first heard it on the radio I was driving south from Long Beach on the 405 to HB. My friend lived in HB and we were great buddies, never a bad day hanging with him. He loved my old band from way back, I've since moved on and the players have changed over the years but we are reforming to the version he loved the best for his celebration of life, he suddenly passed away a month ago. He loved music, playing guitar and sipping some Tequila. This song will always remind me of one of my best friends.......RIP Carl

To all the people saying stuff like "Why are people hating? So what if they changed their sound?" - I can't speak for everyone, but here's my issue: The problem is not that they changed. It's their band and and their music and they're free to sound like whatever they want. BUT, when they released this song, they were doing all kinds of interviewers to promote it. Pop radio djs, who never played their old stuff, basically ripped the old crappy silverchair, saying this was the grown up version. "Forget the old silverchair and their lame heavy music, they're actually good now". Paraphrasing but that really was the message sent. The band just doubled down on that, saying they are embarrassed by their old music. Basically disowned it. Said more or less that they used to suck but were good now. Again, paraphrasing a little, but one them actually said "Every band has some early attempts at music they made while in high school that they're ashamed of. Ours just happened to go platinum." They basically alienated all the fans who made them huge. Joined in with the pop djs who laughed at all their previous stuff. Again, they can sound however they want. They can experiment all they want. Even change the genre of their music altogether. But was it necessary to basically insult the taste of fans who enjoyed their first few albums and made them rich? Because that is literally what they did.

One day I was listening to some grunge and post grunge stuff and Freak came on, then on the side a video talking about the history of the band came up. Talking about how their sound changed when they got older, so I decided to check some out to see just how different they got. Clicked on this song and those beginning notes played, it triggered something. This is that song that's been stuck in my head for all those years, I've heard this song long before their early stuff. OMG I watched this when I was high. Here are my thoughts... As I grew older I lost consciousness of the beautiful things that connect me to this world. My mind is a mess but there is still a flower in there which just needs to be watered. I need to clear my mind of all the useless thoughts. I also needs to forgive those who I constantly think of negatively and move on. Something pure inside of me is wanting to come out. I wake up tomorrow free from my past sickness and I am calm. I gain a passion for something and I am mindful of its future success. I am strong and I feel competent. My mind is connected to godly thinking and I am walking in a straight line. I will never forget how disconnected I was. I was weak and had no strength of character. Cut ties with the past. Talk to that cool guy named God as you walk confidently in a straight line. This is a time capsule which I will read again when I am not high. Thank you Silverchair for your nice lyrics.

I don't think about it that way, my thinking is not about the color of the eyes, it is too superficial and simple, Silverchair is a band, a conjunction of three talents, their compositions are not comparable and for me in their genius they are an evolution in sound from the 90s.

@@RavenousFallen Silverchair always took it as a great compliment and often made the joke themselves that they were Australian Nirvana after hearing it so much. It was their grunge sound, not the looks. Lighten up.

I was not a fan of this song when it came out. But that's due to where i was in life. I wasn't quite ready to change paths. Now, it's been my anthem in my head for years

@@iansamuels7823 I believe it is about getting your life in order. And getting rid of self destructive behavior. In his case likely his eating disorder. Not sure where the "gay" aspect came from.

I'll tell you something else too. Playing this song versus listening to this song is totally different experience. If you have the chance to grab an instrument and play along with him while he's singing, this song transforms into so much more. Then just listening to it. I can't explain that I'm doing my best though have a great day.

That's crazy. God saved me in a hospital room, and I had a 7cm gash in my lung from pleurisy and pneumonia, and it turned to MRSA, and i knew i was dying. I asked the Lord if I could please stay alive so I could teach my sons about who he is and have a new start. The next day, my heart monitor machine had my son, Danny's birthday on it....1/11/07, and it was September of 2016. I went straight too and everyday is a blessing, that i can teach them about the amazing God we serve and a savior we have. God bless this, Dan, as well ❤😊, in Yeshua's mighty name, amen.
