The more you hear of both Rabea Massaad’s music and his personality when he speaks… the more you realise that he is totally the real deal, and a lovely guy to boot.
18:00 was such a relief for me cuz that’s exactly how I write dissonant-ish ambient stuff. “I have no idea what those chords are or if they work together harmonically in a progression but they sound cool to me so” 😂
Bea's on top of the wickedly sick technique game IMO. He's got such a grasp on a wide range of genres from classic virtuoso licks from the late 80's early 90's straight through Tool's 10,000 days into modern Djentemen thump. Absolutely brilliant.
The Darkness is such an incredible band. Sad that most people just view them as being gimmicky due to the falsetto singing, but when you listen they have such great songs and are great players.
Justin Hawkins Rides Again is a great channel! Check it out if you haven't. Any doubts about their musical credilibity go out the window when you realize the guys are just a bunch of music geeks.
I like how this entire masterclass could but summed up as "idk man, sometimes I do some stuff and it sounds pretty sick, so I just do that, and then sometimes, when I do stuff that isn't sick, I do something else"
As a guitarist, I focus on what other guitar players do on the fretboard. Simply because it’s a great learning experience and it may inspire new ideas. That’s why this video is a delight to watch, when the camera is purely focused on the fretboard. Thank you.
First time hearing "in the face of the nameless" and it was like your first time driving a long trip and on your way back it feels waaay shorter... the first listen was surreal and seemed like 5 minutes but going back and watching him play the song goes by so fast and it's frustrating since it's still surreal but I can't get lost in how long that first time felt 😂😂
I know EXACTLY what you mean! The first time was like a journey! I would love to be able to play like that man, such attitude and pure cool guitar playing. It's insane! 🤟🏻
your honesty about limited theory knowledge just proves that...you don't need to know all the theory stuff to be an ace player...in fact it might be better not to know and just use your ear and creativeness .....! you come across as a great guy ....heres to you Rebea !
I took the exact same thing away from this masterclass too. As a non-theory based player, it was inspiring to know that it’s not essential to be ‘successful’.
0:358:16 The slower singing solo parts is/are just divine! His note choices over the backing track are just perfect. I would have called this song "Symphony of Darkness". ;o)
nice guy and great player, im a little confused: in one part he says that he doesn't know what chord he is playing, or what progression it is, it only sounds good so he plays it, but later he says that for him the important thing is to know the different types of chords maj7, dim, augmented, 13, add9 etc, Anyone understand better than me this approach?
I think he doesn't know immediately if it's an A, a C or a F, but he can surely feel the intervals. Different intervals have "colors" and even if you don't know what it is, your ears recognize the color. I hope that it will give you a beginning of the answer :)
Yes knowing shapes is incredibly helpful, so you might not be thinking from a pure theory standpoint of which chord goes best after another, but rather know 2-3 shapes that will be dissonant and build tension, or 2-3 shapes that resolve tension, etc.
"Masterclass"? This was a simple panel with rough outline on guitar and doing guitar demos for YouTune, but where is the actual "guitar masterclass" that the title promised me?
It is frustrating but it’s because they didn’t have a roaming mic in the room so the questions couldn’t be heard clearly. I only know what the questions were because I made note of them when filming.
Bea is a real recording and gigging muscian who happens to also do UA-cam and helps Andertons on the side. This approach is very common these days. Heck even major recording artists have done their fair share of UA-cam over the past 2yrs. He has great guitar skills, musical ideas and is popular within the guitar community. So why not 🤷♂️

Marvellous guitar player, one of the most imaginative out there. Met him in Andertons a couple of years ago and a very nice guy.
I couldn’t agree more!

How come you’re talking about the darkness? Was it mentioned in this masterclass, have I missed it somewhere?

Love this mans playing ...so fruitful.
Yeah man, it's so good, isn't it? 🤟🏻
(@30:50) - I'm with you on that, buddy. I miss the time when bands were larger than life, and when the true, real rockstars existed... 🤘
Matt!!! Thank you for these amazing videos: from Tosin Abasi to Rabea Massaad. I will binge watching them on the weekend 🙂
You are very welcome, Noah. Enjoy your binge and let me know what you think 😃
Great insightful video
Rabea you’re a BEAST!!! You got the chops
Absolutely! 🤟🏻
This was awesome Bea! Great playing and I genuinely enjoy listening to your insight and approach.

It's always better to use your ear and creativity. Regardless of if you know theory or not. There is no true opposition there.

I remember sitting in and watching this masterclass (had to find it in my photos - sept '19) loved it.
Thank you for the upload.
You’re welcome. Hope you enjoyed it.
Awesome view on rabea's thoughts and the way he approaches stuff!
Seems a really really down to earth likeable kind of guy 😁
Yeah man, we spoke for a little while after the event and he’s a decent guy. He even let me film Toska (his band) that evening which was awesome 🤟🏻

Thanks for sharing this one with us, Matt!

Thank you for sharing these!
My pleasure, I'm glad you like them 😃
When he plays some of his melodic/ambient stuff, I immediately see Cristina Scabbia singing with him.
Instantly google's 'christina Scabbia', realises it's the singer from Lacuna Coil and totally gets what you mean! 🤟🏻

Damn dude. That first track melted my fucking face off. Some of those riffs were heavy as fuck. Cradle of filth vibes

Love the guy but i think John browne is way better.. no where near..
Rabea shreds guitar like Vladimir P shreds Ukraine. 💯✊
Sounds like a Mark Tremonti ripoff.
a guitar salesman doing a masterclass? why
Because he's one of the best prog guitarists alive today. Duh.
