Is medication always the answer to mental illness? Anyone who has ever suffered from a mental health condition knows how isolating it can be. You’re desperate to get better, but often the answer is medication and management instead of actual healing. But there may be an entirely new range of treatment strategies available that are directly tied to lifestyle factors crucial in changing your metabolism allowing you to manage a wide range of conditions.
I’m excited to welcome Dr. Chris Palmer to the show today. Dr. Palmer is a Harvard psychiatrist and researcher who works directly with understanding the link between metabolism and mental health. He’s the Founder and Director of the Metabolic and Mental Health Program at McLean Hospital and an Assistant Professor of Psychiatry at Harvard Medical School. Dr. Palmer is here to talk about his new book, Brain Energy: A Revolutionary Breakthrough in Understanding Mental Health-and Improving Treatment for Anxiety, Depression, OCD, PTSD, and More.
Everything from depression to anxiety, and even more serious illnesses like schizophrenia, share underlying causes that are potentially rooted in your metabolism. And what you eat, how you sleep, your lifestyle choices, all play a profound role. It’s possible to change your brain energy and metabolism through practical everyday steps. If you feel like you aren’t getting better, like your ideas and questions are being dismissed, this episode is for you.

As someone who was skinny all their life, I assumed I could eat anything. I grew up in a junk food household. Now I’m 30 dealing with bipolar, a few years back postpartum depression and was hospitalized and did outpatient care in Rhode Island with 1 out of my 3 kids, Ive had anxiety since I was a child, I was diagnosed with alopecia during another pregnancy(now that child has so many food and some environmental allergies and eczema) I have IBS, TMJ pain, insomnia, low hemoglobin, low vitamin d, low potassium and probably parasites at this point.
No one ever asked what I was or wasn’t eating. When I asked to have vitamin d tested I was told I should just try a small anxiety medication but I said no because I did lamictal and didn’t like it. Vitamin d was tested and it was depleted and I live in Massachusetts.
Having all these health issues makes my mental health worse stressing about them. Thankful for conversations like this. I went carnivore for only 4 days but in those 4 days I was less bloated and was able to sleep. 🔑

Most important dietary change that literally everyone regardless of other dietary needs should adhere to is eliminating seed oils. Keto, carnivore, vegan, traditional ethnic diets, I don’t care. If you’re still eating seed oils you’re ruining your health. Keto and vegan people especially need to realise this. Carnivore at least by definition can’t include seed oils. Mediterranean prefers olive oil, also a plus.

      @@Spgal ,hello I am not a doctor!
Women need a lot more animal fat then men. Most rudiment meat like cow, elk, goat that type of animal has a great deal of the vitamins and minerals we need .
Please look up Dr. Anthony Chaffee or the 5minbody,steak maybe the butter gal. You be amazed at what your body will do. No plant based protein. Stay away from carbs
Have a blessed day . I am 67 and very healthy on a all meat diet.
I also eat egg yolks, fish primarily sardines and salmon oysters
Stay with it sometimes it takes a little while to get into the fat adjustment for some people

Eat more plants, less processed foods will help. I use plant food concentrates in capsules because it’s difficult to get enough servings of fruits and vegetables on my plate daily. With a family history of dementia and Parkinson’s, I know diet is so important.

Access to real food can be a barrier to achieving optimal health. It’s alarming how much synthetic food we consume. I would be interested to understand how this impacts us and future generations.

If a person is 160 pounds overweight, why do you need a metabolic hypothesis for their mental health? There may very well be a metabolic connection to their weight; in fact there almost certainly is.
The weight alone, though, is enough to cause a whole lot of mental problems. They'll always be bumping into stuff. Ouch. Mantal paid caused by physical pain.
They'll be getting odd looks from people. Feeling of all sorts, hence mental reactions.
So being surprised that losing the weight, through an appropriate weight-loss program, makes a person feel better seems odd. They feel better because they *are* better.

    • @KhanCarnivore
      @KhanCarnivore 2 місяці тому

I agree somewhat. However, a lot of people are accepting of their weight, and don’t seem to care. Your assumption is they have a mental issue because they, for example, have anxiety about being fat and being judged for it.
A lot of people simply don’t care about being judged, but still suffer from a myriad of mental health issues.
I think there are definitely situations however, where people are affected by their appearance and definitely are experiencing anxiety of depression due to this. But in my opinion is doesn’t paint the full picture.

Do your own research. Regardless of what you do, or read, there is a counter to every argument under the sun.
Does not eating meat help the planet? Debatable. Highly, highly debatable, and I’m not knowledgable enough to know for certain. But my thought is that if everyone is sick, everyone’s brains are in the mud, how are we supposed to actually action sustainable change for the planets future?
I’m taking steps to sort myself, so I can THEN help others.
Additionally, there are certainly plant based Keto plans you can follow, so if you decide you are absolutely dead set against meat consumption, you can check that out.

Eat meat. There is no Big Meat cartel.find a local rancher and buy direct. Eat unprocessed food. You will be pleasantly surprised by how much better you feel eating zero chemical fruits and vegetables. Organic isn't the same as chemical free.
