This was so helpful. I just rescued a pigeon with an injured wing who probably won't be able to get back to the wild (not that I care, because he's awesome) so this video was just what I was looking for 😎
Thank you this was very helpful. My little bird was in my garden in the pouring rain absolutely drenched and couldn’t fly so I brought it in and it’s the sweetest thing.
When I initially got my bird, it was supposed to be temporary...so I gave her brown rice, corn uncooked, chopt up, some banana and now she HATES the expencive KayYee racing blend. Lol it's the best feed....no cheap seed....I can actually eat most of them....but she prefers rice ..and peanuts! She LOVES peanuts
Very informative video, thank you. My pigeon is a spoiled brat, he only wants sunflower and safflower seeds and gets upset when he picks them all out at once and there's none left 😆
Thx. I appreciate this so much..and so does Chick... I think it's very nice that you also help people to understand that each pigeon person is an individual with different likes.. by making this video you've helped to make the world a better place..thx.
Thanks! I'm starting from scratch so it's grassroots method at this point. Go ahead and SHARE any of my videos you enjoyed with everyone you know to get the word out :)
Thanks for subscribing! My pigeon definitely loves living indoors. Sometimes my kids accidentally leave the back door open and she has never tried to fly out. And on her leash in our back yard when she's had enough sun she walks back into the house on her own!
i totally agree with what you said about them eating too much grit but i find it easier too put a little like you said but in a separate dish that just works better for me but great advice
I would insist on adding pellet with added vitamins to your pigeon's food mix. I give mine Harrison's bird food. It contains vitamin D3 and B12 (and many more) which she only could get in the nature via direct sun exposure and soil. They say omega 6 and 3 ratio is also important in pigeons.
When I had chickens, I fed the same food to pigeons since its a mix of seeds and grains and they would even eat corn, which is surprising since I fed all my chickens corn and they came in and ate too.
Mine also like endives (from the fridge and cut in very small pieces, it must be crisp, usualy the white parts), the green leaves of cabbages, brussels sprouts, beans (all the vegetable not only the seed), laituces, but the bird prefers arugula salad (which is very green and stronger, probably better than regular laituce, it also smell something), lentils, corn. I feed it in the morning and evening with seeds, and I give vegetables during the day. I also add sorts of stones and shells. Even if pigeons can eat big pieces mine prefers small ones, not bigger than a sunfloyer seed. If you mix the vegetables with the seeds the pigeon will eat the seeds first. I've read the onions are toxic for birds, be carefull. Green beans seems to be favourited, because pigeon can't eat it without your help, it also smell a lot and I think the bird like that smell.
I've found that nuts and sunflower seeds are their favorites, Hazel-, wal-, peanuts, cashew and almonds are top notch. You'll know, they peck out the best stuff first. Pigeons very picky.
Mine won't touch any of those nuts or seeds. Rose still chooses safflower seeds as her favorite. So you can't say every pigeon is the same with food preference.
Yes my pet pigeon is very picky sometimes doesn't want seeds. They also should get other stuff like cracked oyster shells which I've tried and sometimes she won't eat it. I also give her calcium glubonate which they need especially since mine is laying unfertilized eggs. But thanks for video. I've tried salad greens she won't touch it. Not sure why. My pigeon likes peanuts but not all the time. She wants cheese and I know it's bad for her so I only give her a little mozzerella
A pigeon made a nest in a bucket on my balcony under my BBQ grill and has laid two eggs. She doesn't seem to mind me sitting next to her and I don't mind watching her do her momma bird thing. Any suggestions?
If the momma is taking care of the babies, then just enjoy the show! Ideally there would be a male pigeon helping her out and giving her breaks, but maybe something happened to him?
I found an injured pigeon yesterday (injured by a cat, mainly injured in feet) and it's in no condition to fly.. we gave it rice and other pigeon food... but it won't eat🙁 It ate just a little yesterday, I noticed but since then it's not eating at all🥺... maybe it's for the trauma.. could you please tell what I can do to feed it? If it doesn't eat then it'll die😭😭😭😭
i just found a pigeon too!! im gonna go get her sunflower seeds right now; and im gonna get her some grit im gonna learn how to do this till she feels better.....i hope your lil one makes it, just keep trying....if its her turn to go just know all animals go to heaven....all of em ❤❤❤❤❤❤❤
@@technohippie2702 ahhh woww that is so sweet of you! My birb still HATES KayTee brand race mix.... Butter she does pick out certain seeds. She's a very small dove tho...and can't even eat the hard peas....I have to chop peanuts up for her....
I do and it's because one bird doesn't eat much and I bought two bottles back when I first got her years ago and still am on the second container! But I think it's a good brand too.
I have a question how do you make youre pigeon eat on its own. We rescued one a week or 2 ago and we think its still a fledgling. He doesn't eat on his own he tries but the seeds just end up flying somewhere else so we've been hand feeding him. O also he has a habit of high whistled peeping and flapping his wings uncontrollably whenever hes out of his cage so im wondering if theres anything wrong with that or will just go away eventually
Hello do you answer and chat by chance . I recently inherited almost 100ish pigeons about 50 rollers and 50-60 Homer ( racing pigeons ) I could use some help
Oh my, that's a lot of pigeons! You could try to get help with your local humane society to find adopters. Maybe Palomacy can help you rehome some of them?
@@MyPetPigeon1 yeah not sure rehoming is what I want to do I love them just learning as I go I've flown them before I moved them to my house across from where they were. My Homer's have raced just not with me
If he can't keep any food down, take him to a vet. Rice isn't commonly given as food for pigeons, so maybe get a good quality seed mix also. I can't offer any medical advice on this channel so always go to your avian vet for medical help!
dont worry feed him a mix of food its normal if at the start he can hold certain foods my pigeons at the start could eat peas or corn because of this however after a week or 2 they eat it like pros
Hay, I am vegan and I cook alot of grains, and wondering if it would be okay to feed a pigeon for example cooked lentils, cooked peas, beans, etc, or can i just serve him raw lentils thats made for human ? Thank you
hello yellow , don't give them raw lentils soak them for 6-8 or 12 hours and it's really good if you cook (more like heat them mildly in warm water) in a utensil that don't contain Teflon and make sure to check what kind of cooking vessel are safe for birds (non stick are not though earthen pot are safe) and id personally say give pigeons soaked lentils that's safer and they like corn so add them into your diet and also mung bean and sorghum and you can provide them boiled pasta too .
No, but there's no need to restrict the amount of food so I always make sure there's something in her bowl, especially since she will eat her less favorite things when more hungry. They can go all night without food, since they are pretty much just sleeping.
wouldnt use that grit its made mostly of granite which does nothing for pigeons would recommend a grit formulated for pigeons like versa laga all in one grit
Peanuts, not cocktail type, and sunflower seed... Not salted and roasted.... your not trying to make digestion hard by feeding exclusively overpriced old way too dried out seed ..... JUST do it and watch what they go for and what they leave for later or for good.... Also crushed rusted fresh almonds and corn cut of the cob, not cooked.
See, now I was told NOT to put grit in with the feed because they might not eat it? I was told by pigeon friends to leave a half a tablespoon out per bird per day. Throw away what they don’t eat daily, this is so confusing 😂
Yes, it is confusing! It's because every bird is a little different. Mine would eat the grit out of the bowl as she needed it. But I did end up dumping some every time I refreshed the bowl with new seed. And I don't like wasting so I changed what I do with her grit. I now just sprinkle a big pinch on the mat next to her seed bowl along with the crushed egg shells and she eats it all or leaves some for tomorrow. 1/2 tablespoon seems like a lot though, maybe try less and you won't have to throw any away. It's not like it goes bad anyway, it's just rocks!
Wow! I just watched this again and noticed how loud my kids are in the background :) Also, I don't wear a mic, and I don't make any money doing these videos, and it was one of my early ones when I was still learning how to do it all, so put that all together and you get some bad quality sound. Sorry! Just turn up your volume :)
Hi, why would you use a pigeon to train a dog? Also, I have only one pigeon. I don't breed them. There's too much of that already so ideally people who really care about pigeon welfare should only adopt ones that would otherwise be killed because they lost in a pigeon race or something like that. Thanks for watching!
If your bird don't like peanuts it's because your feeding crappy peanuts... All pigeons like peanuts.. if not it would be like finding a human who don't like pizza or ice cream... When giving nuts They must be the highest quality and crushed or broken or halved .... You find roasted fresh unsalted peanuts or sunflower seeds at no less than 3.00 a pound.... I believe your bird will eat it.
hey man, i’m sure there are humans who don’t like pizza. I don’t like pizza, and same goes for birds by your logic, birds have this thing called preferences.
Give her real corn cut from a cob.. even cooked.... I don't feed my birds anything I wouldn't and don't eat.... Your not trying to make it difficult for them to eat and digest their food.. there's no law that says they can't eat roasted and hulled nuts or cooked grains..... Just not processed or adulterated in any way.
