what is your favorite airline
Delta, when it’s affordable..
Aer Lingus
turkish or swiss im an international girl
icelandair
anything except Ryanair.
as a flight attendant i will say crazy, stupid, love is the best airplane movie
I will wholeheartedly agree with that.
Agree, my gf and I watched it on a transatlantic flight and stayed riveted the whole time. And I'd been avoiding watching it at home because of the runtime. We both loved it.
@@sd4830 why were you avoiding it? Its only 2 hours long
def one of the best
I literally just watched this on a flight from Canada to New Zealand yesterday wow
My best airplane movie experience was a double feature of Kung Fu Panda 2 and Fast Five in a transatlantic flight in the early 2010s.
That sounds like perfection. The early 2010s were the best.
same
One time when I was a kid I spent an entire 12 hour flight doing nothing but watching Kung Fu Panda 2 on repeat
Sounds nice.
i watched everything everywhere all at once on a night flight from canada to europe and it was definitely AN EXPERIENCE
Sound nice. Last thing I watched on a plane was a random SpongeBob episode. Had me holding in my laughter the whole flight.
i watched it with my dad on the airplane
Yo exactly same
I watched EEAAO on a plane as well, from Massachusetts to California, and it’s now one of my top 5 favorite movies ever.
it is in my top 3
Ocean's 11 is my favorite airplane movie. I've watched it on 3 different flights and it's just as fun every time. fast-paced, great soundtrack, and it always puts me in a good mood.
HUGE agree
OMG DANNY
Saw Ocean's 8 for the first time on a plane and it was so much better than when I watched it on the ground.
It's my go-to NETFLIX AND CHILL movie..and the best part is.. you gain self control when you're watching it💀
watched Ocean's 8 on a plane and it was so fun, perfect airplane movie
The best airplane film I ever watched was The Lighthouse. Perfect aspect ratio, watched it at night time, sleep deprived, felt slightly mad
I was mugged after the first time I saw The Lighthouse, so every time I re watch it I get a mild ptsd episode that really elevates the atmosphere of the film so I kinda get ya
Watching The lighthouse sleep deprived is honestly the shit
I tried this and it was too dark/quiet tor me
Sounds incredible! There is definitely a difference between day flight movies and night flight movies
1000000%
This is a very unique video essay topic you came up with.
And one that I honestly needed. Watching Raging Bull on my flight wasn't the best choice.
Watched Interstellar on a flight from San Juan to Atlanta. Got the real world experience during the docking scene because we had some awful turbulence flying over the Bermuda Triangle. Also the social network is perfect and fits very well with those American Airlines biscuits they give you
the social network is The airplane movie for me lol i've done it a few times
Same but my headphones were shit and I didn’t understand anything
Something about spaceships and you bein in a flying metal tube
I thought Interstellar would be too dark for an airplane watch, but experiencing actual turbulence during the docking scene must have been a different level of immersion.
i literally watched the social network for the first time on a plane and i'd have to agree with you.
The longest flight I’ve ever been on was from Johannesburg to Dubai and I watched ALL THREE HOBBIT MOVIES.. AND THERE WAS STILL FLIGHT TIME LEFT. Brutal
It was on my flight from Singapore to L.A. that I realized just how big the Pacific Ocean is. Spoiler alert: it's very big.
Africa is a big continent
Was it brutal because you watched the hobbit movies?
This is why I binge watch the entirety of star wars whenever I'm flying
How tf does it take them so long to get from Johannesburg to Dubai? They're not exactly worlds apart.
I’ve honestly found that some of my favorite movies to watch in the air are the life-changing ones. I do understand the easy to digest part but I mean for goodness sake you’re all the way in the air traveling the world, it sometimes feels so fitting to watch a movie that matches that feeling. That is, if you’re someone who doesn’t fly too often anyways, that mystery & surreal feeling is always there. Viewing Waves on my way back home is seriously an experience I’ll never forget.
Yeah, I watched Akira Kurosawa's Dreams on a flight without knowing much about it, what an experience it became one of my favourite movies even though I don't normally watch movies which are that serious
the first time I watched The Shining was on an airplane. not really the same thing but it definitely was effective in scaring me cuz I was uneasy the rest of the flight and super pumped because of how much i enjoyed it
There’s definitely some strange psychology involved. Same as when watching TV at a hotel. The stuff that’s playing is just more appealing than it usually is for whatever reason.
Omg we had the same experience
i agree! i watched before sunrise on a plane and it was so poignant that way
I’ve come to a recent realization that the best airplane movies are Miyazaki movies for a multitude of reasons. They’re beautiful, vibrant, digestible, and usually pretty safe. They’re very visual stories, so easy to just sit back and watch without really needing to be analytical. The music is always astounding, and I feel like I always catch anybody next to me always watching and smiling. And also coincidentally, Miyazaki had a fascination with aviation , so planes are pretty prominently featured in a lot of his movies, always making something about watching them on the plane feel very right, very safe.
facts I think Spirited Away loses points for being a little spooky, but I think my favorite Miyazaki airplane watch was having a two year old next to me giggle as I watched My Neighbor Totoro :). her parents were like "wow what is that? cool movie man!" so I hope I got to introduce a whole family to a classic.
I watched Royal tenenbaums on my 2hr flight and now I realize why it seemed to be the best plane movie experience I’ve ever had. Active paced, colorful, and a story that you get sucked into plus I already loved the movie. But now I think Wes Anderson movies are made for the airplane
weirdly that one was a really bad airplane movie experience for me- but I think part of that was my not seeing any Wes Anderson movies with more freaky dark parts before? But I guess it's different for everybody!
was on a plane a week ago, four hour flight, decided to watch "catch me if you can". Perfect plane movie.
I actually watched the same movie as well on a plane not so long ago, but only until the sex scene. I immediately turned it off because ngl it feels really weird watching that on an airplane with people next to me.
Should do that at some point. Love that movie. One of the best Spielberg movies.
I watched The Martian on a flight from New York to Minneapolis. Perfect movie for that flight honestly. Moved quickly and was over just in time for landing in Minneapolis.
I watched the Martian on a flight to Sydney. PERFECT airplane movie
The Martian is just a great film in general, so rewatchable
Something about spaceships and you bein in a flying metal tube
I did so in 2016 on a flight from Toronto to Manchester. The censoring was hilarious, when Watney says "oh... fuck" it was bowdlerised into "oh... fudge".
@@TheLuismaBeaTle this is why i think interstellar is perfect for watching on a plane
Your footage of Top Gun: Maverick made me realize it’s perfect for a flight (if you’ve already seen it on the big screen.) It’s long, well paced, bright in most scenes, and you can pretend you’re in the plane during the flight scenes 🤘🏼
Watched this last week on a flight and I can confirm everything you said, 10/10 airplane movie
My friend just watched that on an airplane on the way out and again on the way back so can confirm
Literally just watched it earlier this week on a flight and it was a transcendent experience
Unless you are superstitious about watching movies where planes crash in an airplane.
I watched it for the first time on a plane. Definitely would recommend
On a flight back from Korea I watched Dunkirk so that thumbnail grabbed my attention very well.
I watched Your Name on a flight, just barely finished after we touched down. I had to stop myself from crying and get my stuff ready and was quickly ushered back into the chaos of a full airport, it felt like getting ripped out of an emotional world. 10/10 would emotion-shock myself again
I watched Toy Story 3 on a airplane in 2011 and it was a masterpiece on a plane to Florida especially going to Walt Disney World. That's the only movie I watched on a plane. I got to meet Woody at Disney and gave him a hug.
genuinely laughed out loud at the idea of Fanny and Alexander on a flight
Theres something special about sobbing to yourself af the end of an emotional movie while the person immediately next to you is watching the Hangover.
Honestly I think any Wes Anderson movie is perfect for a plane cus they’re bright, snappy, and kinda just fun to look at. The plots aren’t super complicated either so it’s easy to stay focused.
Recently I did a double feature of Clueless and The Devil Wears Prada on a cross-country flight (watching both for the first time) and it was great, both funny and entertaining movies and I didn't have to think too hard to enjoy them
For me, sound is also a factor. I don't watch musicals on a flight. I often only have earphones with me, so the constant hum of the plane is inescapable. For other movies, I just put on subtitles, but when it's a musical I want to be able to hear the music properly.
Napoleon dynamite is one of my favourites for a flight with great world building that sucks you in, very bright colours (and being a film I watch quite a lot) I find it easy to speed through an hour and a half. (I will be trying parasite on my next long travel)
Napoleon Dynamite is an all time movie! Never watched it on a plane!
@@isaiahvoss highly recommend it on a plane!
@@huffian8620 Vote For Pedro.
I watched Napoleon Dynamite on a bus TV on the way to science camp in 7th grade. Pure awesome.
I watched Interstellar for the first time on a flight, and I’m convinced that IMAX and on an airplane are the two best ways to watch that movie.
I watched Interstellar for the first time on my phone. Never have I been more disappointed in myself
I watched Gravity for the first time on an airplane, and it was extra terrifying cause we were in the air
My first airplane movie was Game Night (2018) and it’s the perfect epitome of an airplane movie.
It’s everything an airplane movie should be and I honestly love it for it.
I watched Inception in a long airplane flight and got to feel so many emotions that I don't think would have experienced in a theater.
oh man i was thinking inception would be a perfect airplane movie! thats so cool haha
Recently went through the oceans trilogy on a flight. Perfect movies for a flight and the time went by so incredibly quickly (although they are very funny which made it difficult sometimes cause I didn't wanna be the person laughing loudly or anything. But besides that they are great choices)
Catch Me if You Can is my favorite movie to watch on an airplane. It’s bright, happy, and colorful, it’s decently long and the plot moves along at a great pace, and it doesn’t have anything in the way of disturbing imagery. And it does such a good job of capturing that mid-20th century magic that airlines used to have that it makes your boring flight to Arizona feel stately and stylish.
Coming of age comfort movies from the 80s-90s. Easy choice. Ferris Bueller, Breakfast Club, Stand by Me, Rushmore, all have been great choices for me
been saying it a long time: the now you see me franchise are the ultimate plane movies
Loved the video idea, never really thought about "flight movies" or which one to choose. In my last flight to europe I watched C'mon C'mon for the first time and although its artsy and black and white, still loved it a lot and kept me watching in a 10 hour flight
Damn sounds like a super long movie
Interstellar as a rewatch on the plane is AMAZING. My plane was launching to the sky right when the crew in the movie launched to space and I still cannot forget that ethereal moment.
Right on! I’m about to do this on my 10 hour flight soon
I think you also have to be aware of the fact that certain airlines engage in light censorship with the movies offered on their in-flight entertainment. It meant that I missed a whole scene in The Shape of Water which made some things in the rest of the movie make less sense. Also the time I was rewatching The Social Network and they dubbed over the "along with my hoodie and my fuck you flip flops" with the most horrendously done ADR I've ever heard to clean up the language.
The first time I watched Parasite was on a plane since it hadn't released in the UK at that point. I also watched The Breakfast Club for the first time on a flight, it was a good one for it. Mad Max Fury Road is one I've watched a bunch of times in the air.
I watched Interstellar on a night flight from Italy to New York, goddamn it was an insane experience, I felt the movie, I think of I had watched it in a cinema I wouldn't have been that sucked into the story and the action. It was such a other worldly experience it still boggles me...
Looking at the moon out of the plane window and picturing the depths of space was insane
Never watched a movie on a plane before, but if I were to it would probably be Muppet Treasure Island. I’ve seen it dozens of times, I know every beat and almost every line, and yet it never gets old to me.
this is one of my favorite videos off of you. getting a random topic like airplane movies and deconstructing it and talking about it for 7 mins straight.
I watched both The Revenant and Interstellar for the first time on a flight to Europe in 2016 and it made me so damn existential the rest of the trip.
Those are both movies that I wouldn't have appreciated as much without the big screen.
I recommend watching Jackass Forever on a plane as you get some extra thrill from the fear of passengers around you thinking you’re watching a snuff film
so, i watched your video, but i didn't watch movies in 5 years.
I just watched gone girl, which was a genius recommendation, and just finished parasite too - holy hell i haven't felt this amazed in a while
thank you, kind stranger on the internet :)
On my trip to Italy I watched the Matrix, isle of dogs, and Hot Fuzz all for the first time and still have fond memories of that flight. Hot Fuzz actually became a fast favorite because of that flight
I am not going to lie, some of my very best movie experiences happened during airplane rides. I especially remember watching "Dunkirk" (2017) on a flight from Teheran to Frankfurt. I was so emotionally touched by the brilliance of the movie that I didn't know what to do with myself, sitting at night in a dark aircraft cabin at 35,000 feet.
Other mentions are Braveheart, Edge of Tomorrow, Forrest Gump, Rainman, Dr. Strangelove
I watched Creed and Soul at my last flight. These flicks really decreased my anxiety throughout and were spectacular to avoid small talk with my family.
Both me and my brother both watched Creed for the first time while in an airplane completely on completely different flights without knowing the other had done so, and between that and your comment I am convinced that Creed just has a special way of attracting airplane viewers.
@@misterrkalebhimself Creed is a great flick for planes. Bright, simple, engaging and long enough. Perhaps the Deep State is behind this.
I laughed out loud at 'Damn, I'm in the family now' and 'unless your favourite comfort watch is Martyrs in which case you shouldn't be allowed on the flight.'
I once saw La Haine in a long bus ride and DAMN the 3 guys next to me where LOVING the film on my phone haha
Never thought you would actually make this 👌
I watched First Man on the plane and we were on the descent to land and going through clouds with turbulence when the rocket in the movie was lifting off. I've never seen a movie in 4dx but that was such an experience.
when I was like 16 I was on a flight alone and I'm 5'0" with a baby face so everyone thought I was a little kid. For the most part the flight attendants were more attendant (hehe) and being offered the kids menu meant I had to eat less airplane food so it was pretty nice. Cut to later in the flight during a slightly dark lit scene in the R-rated marvel film Deadpool, not only did the reflection show my gross 10th-hour-of-the-flight hair, but also the look of absolute horror on the flight attendant behind me who was about to offer me some more orange juice.
Great timing for this one as I’m off to Texas on Thursday. Thinking of rewatching Stalker!
Okay so on my 17 hour flight from Germany to California I watched… a lot.
Rare Window, Last Night in Soho, promising young woman, Her, EEAAO, the father and I started on ambulance.
I would say, that pyw and rare window worked the best for me. Like you said, good old classics can be the best
I watched Tampopo on a plane. When the room service scene came on, I nearly had a panic attack.
Gone With The Wind slaps on a flight. 4 hours, sucks you in, mostly nice and bright, makes you feel productive for watching a classic if you haven't seen it already - can recommend!
Finally someone made a video about this! Thank you! 🥂
Mentioned this on the last video, but i still think its hilarious that I watched Grave of the Fireflies for the first time on an airplane with really rough subtitles
Anyways best movie ive seen on an airplane...i'd prolly give that nod to Edge of Tomorrow or Wreck-It Ralph. Lost in Translation seemed like a perfect airplane movie but i had a pretty short flight that time and didnt get to finish it.
Conversely, I tried watching Grand Budapest Hotel on a plane and dropped it very quickly, you really do need something thats fun but moves quickly and doesnt require much attention to appreciate it, Budapest was just barely over the thresholds imo
The fact you're assuming i've been in a plane somewhere in the last 20 years... man we are poor people xD
why do you think im watching movies to escape reality
Around a year ago I watched Nobody on a flight and it has stuck with me ever since. It was like 9 PM so everything outside was dark, and the movie fit that tone perfectly.
THE BEACH IS THE PERFECT AIRPLANE MOVIE ESPECIALLY IF YOU GOING ON A VACATION IT WILL INSPIRE YOU TO MAKE WILD THINGS ON THE VACATION
As any fan of Kermode and Mayo knows, you also have to be wary of Altitude Adjusted Lacrimosity Syndrome when on a flight as well
perfect timing karsten, i'm travelling in like a week or so, and it's a 14 hour flight. Will be sure to keep this vid in mind.
I watched Once Upon a Time in Hollywood for the first time on a twelve hour flight to Japan, I haven't been on such a long flight in ages and it was literally the best airplane experience I've ever had.
i watched rain man for the first time on a plane and thought it was a psychological thriller. airplanes make any experience 100% longer and more uncomfortable
I like to watch air crash investigations while on a flight.
Watched Game Night and Death of Stalin back to back on a flight and I think if I had seen either in a theater my enjoyment would be weaker. The run-around energy of both is the perfect mental distraction from being stuck in the same tiny chair for 10+ hours.
Thank you for posting this 4 days before I fly out from Phoenix AZ to Dublin Ireland 😍
I was on a trip to visit my brother in LA and i was sat between two broad guys- I ended up watching Drive My Car. Now it's not a violent film but the first forty minutes has like four sex scenes, fortunately both dudes were asleep. the screen was a foot and a half from my face but somehow i was completely absorbed in the film and now its one of my favorite films of all time.
Watched it too in a flight to Mexico. Had to skip the sex scenes, so most of the first part before the starting credits felt chunked out, but the movie after minute fourty was a fantastic experience. Sublimely inmersive, soothingly quiet and sentimental. My favourite movie of 2021.
currently in the airport scrolling through the catalog. Karsten knew what I needed
This essay is almost a short story about your travel psychology. I don’t feel half the things you are motivated by at the end and was drawn in by how the reasons you gave revealed how you thought about those strange inbetween spaces of trips.
RyanAir flight from Budapest to NYC. My cousin, next to me, watched all three LoTR films (for the first time, may I add) back-to-back-to-back. Legend.
I love how this video came up just as I was considering what movies to download for my flight tomorrow 😂
Before I saw this, I was considering a lot of the same factors and I have to agree! Some of my all time favorites for flights are the Ocean’s movies (Ocean’s 11, 12, and 13). They’re fun, brightly colored, and have great stories. However, I’ll never forget when I watched M. Night’s Split on a flight coming home, and as soon as I landed I immediately rented the sequel, Glass (I had already seen Unbreakable years before). What an experience!
Just had a flight to Vegas for a work conference where I finally caught up with Elvis, and I think we’ve got a Gump competitor on our hands: It really works as an airplane movie! Bright, dopey as hell so you won’t feel bad if you doze off, enough unhinged moments that make you rewind just to hear Tom Hanks say “heez hwhaite??, middle aged and older folks will lean over and ask if it’s any good, and it’s like 2 hours 40 minutes! Austin Butler actually being good in it is just the cherry on top!
i love the topic, makes a ton of sense too. the more familar you are with the movie, the faster it'll feel in the air.
this video idea is so cool i lovw
21 gets my vote for the best airplane movie. It’s easy to watch, engaging, and has people traveling to Vegas in planes which make the movie more relatable up there.
I kid you not I fly from London to California TOMORROW. This is a beautiful gift you’ve given me.
Literally flying tomorrow
Thank you Karsten!
I watched Everything everywhere all at once with my father on a 11 hour flight and it was the best experience of my life
The first time I came across the series Nathan For You was on an 17 hour flight from LA to Singapore back in 2018. I was crying from laughter somewhere over Siberia and kept waking up my neighbors. I haven't seen it on an in flight entertainment screen since.
MOST essential is that many scope aspect ratio movies are cropped to fit a 16x9 android tablet screen. Since you don't have internet it's sometimes hard to know which movies have been cropped, but if it says it was formatted to fit the screen run away! (Many many many movies on airplanes are)
this was a great video karsten! thanks!!
I think an Interstellar rewatch on the plane is an amazing experience. I also did a double feature of Juno and Lady bird recently on a long flight and it was great.
personally, for me, no. 1 woulda been like 9-11 documentaries
This is such a great idea for a video
on my way to Japan from california in 2018, i was able to watch 5 movies and it felt like the time went by so fast. i watched infinity war, back to the future, dodgeball, dunkirk, and ferris bueller’s day off. i tried watching casablanca somewhere between those ones but i couldnt last 10 mins at all. good airplane movies are a real phenomenon.
In The Heights was amazing on my flight, especially since I was missing home, and home is NYC, so thank god that In The Heights was there to remind me of home!
watching this hours before going on a plane back home, thanks karsten
The Darjeeling Limited for me is like the PERFECT airplane movie if your flight is under 2 and a half hours
I WAS LOOKING FORWARD TO THIS AS SOON AS YOU MENTIONED IT IN ANOTHER VIDEO
One of my favorite movies, Waves, was first experienced on an airplane for me
This is a cool video. I will remember these guidelines when I build my portable media tablet for flying
I can't wait for Ruben Ostlund to take this idea in his next movie and be like "Well... what if you don't have any of that entertainment on the plane?
Cool video! Now I am going to watch Requiem for a Dream 3 (maybe 4) times on my next long ass flight.
Everything is gonna be perfectly fine, nothing to worry about at all.
Best movie I ever watched on a plane was called 2 girls 1 cup directors cut.
A good family film to help ease a long international flight
Totally agree with all of your points! I recently flew to Paris and I watched The French Dispatch and Rocketman, both movies I had been meaning to watch for the first time. I didn't end up appreciating French Dispatch as I normally would a Wes Anderson film because it has darker scenes and I couldn't get easily sucked into the movie. But I loved watching Rocketman. It was visually bright, and a familiar genre that I always enjoy watching. Great video that will definitely be called upon before my next flight!
people tend to overlook the impact of anime when you're travelling long haul
specially the ghibli classics like castle in the sky, howl's moving castle, spirited away
hell i'll even throw in cowboy bebop the movie, the flight scenes, the combat scenes and even the jazz tracks add a flair of sophistication to your flight
The first, and possibly best aeroplane movie I saw was Almost Famous.. Nice and wordy, nice simple story.
Really good film, really enjoyable flight through the night watching it.
I just watched The Bad Guys and Unbearable Weight of Massive Talent for the first time on a plane and they were perfect. Bright, fast paced, familiar yet fresh.
Spring Breakers a la middle seat, definitely comfortable when it comes to pushing the envelope.
I watched the French Dispatch and Blackkklansman on the flight to Italy I took. The old man beside me was likely very confused but hey, I wanted to catch upon a release I missed and enjoy one of my favorite films.
my flight home from Italy this summer had some TV shows; I ended up watching the entire first season of Only Murders in the Building and it was absolutely the perfect thing
I think your last point is the most significant. There are times where I want to watch a film I’ve never seen before and there are times when I couldn’t think of doing anything worse. An aeroplane context would very much fall into the latter
