I was in the audience for this. I was a freshman on an acting scholarship in San Diego and the school announced there were tickets available for students to go on a bus to LA to see the Tonight Show. Little did we know Lucille Ball would be a guest. Hard to be star-struck these days but she was a true star and we were so happy and struck to see one of the brightest stars. Dr. Ruth Westheimer and Steven Wright were also guests. First time away at college, first semester, 18 years old....what an amazing unforgettable way to start off your new chapter in life as a young kid to see the biggest legend you grew up watching on TV.

Lucille Ball and Carol Burnette stand alone as the female GOATs of comedy. There are many great comedians, but those two are in another league entirely.
Rarely have I seen Ms. Rivers look at another celebrity with such admiration, she was sincere, respectful and allowed Ms. Ball to have the light. Great interview!

I was walking down second Avenue one evening and there was movie equipment all over the streets not an unusual sight in Manhattan at any time. So I stopped and asked my usual question at one of the tech guys, is this a movie or a TV show? He said it was a movie for TV. So I asked my max question that I always ask who is in it? He said Lucille Ball. I said really, He said yeah she’s sitting over there. Sure enough like she says in the interview was dressed in a costume of a bag lady and was sitting in one of those movie chairs with the canvas back smoking a cigarette. So I went over said hello and chatted for a little bit and she was good enough to give me an autograph. When I saw this clip on UA-cam from 1985 it got me wondering and sure enough she talked about making the movie.... Was fun meeting her. How can you not love Lucy.
She was right about no one recognizing her when she was on set for “Stone Pillow”. Fresh out of college, I spent three days trying to track her down for an autographed photo for a friend, and when a PA pointed her out to me (she and Gary Morton were admiring high-end jewelry in a window display) I didn’t recognize her myself. She signed the photo (and barked at me for not holding the photo up hard enough for her, which I LOVED), which I still have to this day.
It is odd that you say that because Ms. Ball was pretty emphatic that NO ONE recognized her while on the set. I mean, I sort of believe you but I'm confused about that part of it.
"I Love Lucy" all happened before I was born but as a kid, I watched all of the reruns. I didn't even realize they were reruns at the time because I didn't even know what a rerun was. I LOVED Lucy, even as a kid. I just thought she was so funny but also just an amazing woman. Later I saw her on The Tonight Show and other live shows and I was like....whoa....when did she get so old. Then I knew. But honestly, I just thought she was such a fantastic woman because she wasn't afraid of anything or anyone, she didn't hold back, she answered you sincerely and confidently and she did not care what you thought about her. What a treasure she was. All of those people who got to watch "I Love Lucy" live, consider yourselves lucky that you got to see it all when it was brand new, when Lucy was still young. She was so talented and just a beautiful soul. I miss her very much and wish she had lived a lot longer. She deserved it. At least we can still see her on UA-cam. RIP, Miss Mcgillicuddy.
Lucille Ball faced so much adversity in her early life and then in her marriage but still lived an amazing life entertaining Americans and the world everyday!! Love to Lucy RIP.

Lucille Ball put Star Trek on the map. She believed in the show even though she lost money. It cost her her studio. Her pockets weren't deep enough to handle it, but over the long term it paid. So hat's off and thanks.

LEGEND! I adore this woman. I do believe I Love Lucy is the greatest sitcom of all time. Im 44 and have seen ever episode countless times. It still never gets old. Anytime I am sick, or down...Watching episodes of I.L.L. just lifts my spirits. And she was right...you can't top it, so why even try.
Now THIS IS A STAR. When she just decides it's time to leave at 10:38 BEFORE the commercial break - that is just total BOSSDOM! Ane how she acknowledges the fans both entering and exiting... They just dpn't make them like that anymore.
She also was a fierce businesswoman and got what she wanted. I loved her and her sarcastic sense of humor. She and Desi were great creators in television and changed the way sets were created and scenes were filmed. Their use of the laugh track was clever and their show became timeless. A classic.
My memories of Lucy are as a child when staying home sick from school and watching reruns of I Love Lucy and, in my opinion, the greater The Lucy Show, with the legend, Gale Gordon, along with Viv. And then, Mister Ed.
There is no one more talented than Lucy , her shows still hold up, if anything now they take you back to a world we all desire. But even on this tonight show she is an amazing woman, mogul, mother, comediene, and a force to be reckoned with.....love lucy
When I was in college in the '80s, one of my part-time jobs was as a chauffeur. I was fortunate to have driven (around Boston area) celebrities such as Gene Wilder, Gilda RAdner, 'The Cars', cast of 'Amadeus' (Tom Hulce, F. Murray Abrams, and some other actors I don't remember). The last celebrity I had was Lucille Ball. I grew up and adored 'I Love Lucy' reruns, and watched 'Here's Lucy' on CBS on Monday nights (Boston). I especially loved when Elizabeth Taylor and Richard Burton starred in an episode during the 2nd marriage for Liz and Richard when he gave her a humungous diamond ring. I even enjoyed Lucille Ball and Bea Arthur in a remake of 'Mame' in the early '70s, even though the movie was panned and got horrible reviews. Lucille Ball was a tough broad, a savvy business woman, and a comedic genius . Also I was a big fan of Vivian Vance who had an amazing career outside of co-starring in a lot of "Lucy" sitcoms over the years. She was an established vaudeville and stage/play actress before she even starred in 'I love lucy', appearing in hundreds of plays before and after. I am so glad that Lucy made up with Vivian who Lucy didn't speak to for a number of years after Vivian left her show. Lucy saw this move as a betrayal while Vivian just wanted out from all the "Lucy" shows after sticking with Lucy for a number of sitcoms starting with of course "I Love Lucy'. She wanted to explore other material, especially going back to the Broadway stage in a number of success shows. But throughout the '70s, Vivian suffered terribly from breast cancer and then bone cancer and was living in the SF Bay Area. Lucy did fly up to see Vivian a day or so before she died and they made amends with lots of laughter and tears I read. Lucille Ball in my experience spending a few hours with her as her driver seemed tough, acerbic, and a person who holds on to grudges. So, I am so glad that she reunited with Vivian at the very end of Vance's life.
Thank you so very much for posting this, John Flanagan. How iconic, the phenomenal Joan Rivers interviewing the Legend Lucille Ball. Joan did a fantastic job interviewing Lucy. What a treasure to see. Both pioneers; Lucy as a comedic actor in the dawn of sitcom, Joan Rivers, championing woman in stand up comedy. There she was sitting in the coveted chair of the greatest ever, Johnny Carson. Lucy made me laugh in childhood through reuns and Joan made me laugh in adulthood. Will cherish them always.
I'm now watching the I Love Lucy series once again, making it probably the 10th time over 50 years & still laugh so hard I almost cry on some of the skits. It's hard to believe how absolutely funny the (4) of them together were.

Lucy and Desi Arnaz were amazing. They worked an act together and traveled the country performing. America loved them. That's why he was cast as her husband. Rest us history. Look up Desilu.

This woman was iconic. I remember when she died. She is still the queen of TV. If you look at ratings, Lucille Ball was in the top 10 Nielsen ratings, consistently in the 50’s, 60’s, & 70’s. It wasn’t until she tried again in the 80’s that it didn’t work for her. Sadly, but, one could always say that by then she had set the standard.
I've never seen Stone Pillow so after reading your comment I've found a place in Australia that sells it and I'll buy it.
Lucy was just the best. She ran Desilu studios with an iron fist, and made it possible for such shows as "Star Trek" to get going.
Joan looks absolutely gorgeous here
agree!
She exposed Michael Obama and paid the ultimate price for it.
Omg she’s a knockout!

I love her confidence!!! I love her polite, firm way of ending the interview. A thank you w a hand shake n getting up. We are done this second bc Lucy says so, love her, she is all that and more 🥰 💙
The good old days when stars were so different than those of today. She was such a lady. Greatly missed.
Truth Indeed
Well Cate Blanchett and Nicole Kidman are the same
Now we've got Cardi B ugh.
@@hannahwalmer1124 oh don't even say that name . I know what you mean but Lucy was a star with a capitol S with class and style. Cardi B, not even close to this.
I miss it dude. 80s Grammys and celebs were so beyond what we have today.
What a beautiful soul never to be replaced ❤❤
How can anyone not love her♥️♥️♥️
Beautiful song. I wrote a song in dedication to my wife's mom Linda who passed away. ua-cam.com/video/JSbGGiSe3S8/v-deo.html I put my heart and soul in this song and dedicate it to everyone who lost a loved one. Please subscribe to my UA-cam channel if you like this song. God Bless.

Great story
How do I turn on The voice next to the pictures
I want to see to hear the discussion how do I do it I still don't know how to do it I want to hear the voice associated with the with this interview
People do that to homeless people because they feel like they don't have anything to offer them.
She was truly wonderful. A no-nonsense trailblazer for women in show business! She will always be admired. ❤
Total CLASS and no BS. Love it when it's time to go, she just hits the road. When STARS WERE STARS!
There will NEVER EVER be another like her. I miss her! And Joan Rivers was so beautiful on this clip. 💯❤

Great necklace too. A woman could wear that currently and not be dated.
I love how Lucille is so down-to-earth and dignified.
She was a known beep. 😂🤗
Lucille Ball faced so much adversity in her early life and then in her marriage but still lived an amazing life entertaining Americans and the world everyday!! Love to Lucy RIP.
All these years later and I still love Lucy. She was a gem.
So classy! and Joan too she was a great interviewer!
Lucy ! What a successful legend she is. So loved and adored by millions of PEOPLE.. So sad , RickyRicardo and her had a very sad and bad marrige. But. they carried on forgave. .. They Stayed together and stared in their own sitcome.
I LOVE LUCY! Even with all their own personal marriage problems...
I wish i could back in time. In the. 1960s.. LUCY ! Makes me feel wonderful.
Lucille Ball put Star Trek on the map. She believed in the show even though she lost money. It cost her her studio. Her pockets weren't deep enough to handle it, but over the long term it paid. So hat's off and thanks.
WOW! I did not know that! Awesome of her to believe in it!
Nice reference John. She was a serious trailblazer for the human experience.
Wow, now I have to research this! Thanks!! 😊

This video is gonna break my phone. I don’t think it can handle this level of legendary talent.
Do stars even bow and show such gratitude for their fans like that anymore???
Julie Andrews would, I think, if the audiences had any dignity.
She demanded that she be given free furniture from my uncles store back then because she thought she was higher up from those who payed
No. No class, no manners
Dolly Parton does (she also turns and bows toward her band to thank them , after a performance). Perhaps one or two others, but not too many.

How is that amazing? Other people were alive too.
@@Michelle-pn9xtObjection…Missy did not indicate or imply that she was the only person alive at that time, just that she was seemingly honored to be alive at the same time as such greatness. I move to strike Michele’s comment as irrelevant, sarcastic, cynical, insensitive, and downright rude.
calm down she was just a commedian.
A grand entrance, a well deserved and unrehearsed standing ovation! I really felt the energy in the room. It must have been palpable. lol Thanks for sharing this moment between two truly Legendary Stars.

You are so right.
Drs should prescribe I love Lucy as medicine for depression and anxiety.
Too bad Patrick Steward didn't follow up and went with the "Picard" remake...
A graceful, humble entrance acknowledging the adoration for her, a wonderful interview, and an simple graceful exit. Class personified
Best interview ever, Lucy is so honest!
I got emotional when she came out on stage. I love her!
Now THIS IS A STAR. When she just decides it's time to leave at 10:38 BEFORE the commercial break - that is just total BOSSDOM! Ane how she acknowledges the fans both entering and exiting... They just dpn't make them like that anymore.
She's the best!!
She also was a fierce businesswoman and got what she wanted. I loved her and her sarcastic sense of humor. She and Desi were great creators in television and changed the way sets were created and scenes were filmed. Their use of the laugh track was clever and their show became timeless. A classic.
An incredible talent and a performer we will love forever.
Joan appeared in an episode of 'Here's Lucy.' The two of them together were a riot! 😄
Joan exposed Michael Obama and paid the ultimate price for it.
As a bag lady: "Well, you don't think I did it without make-up?" 😂😂😂
My memories of Lucy are as a child when staying home sick from school and watching reruns of I Love Lucy and, in my opinion, the greater The Lucy Show, with the legend, Gale Gordon, along with Viv. And then, Mister Ed.

I will always love lucy. I still watch her dvds . Am 67 now and watched Lucy with my mom in the 1950 s . I sure miss those beautiful times.
Lucille and my mother were the same age and my mother looked like her, minus the red hair. Lucy always reminds me of my mum. RIP both of them.

Hi Sonia
Love Lucy. You can just tell she did not suffer fools.
She was one sharp lady.
2 of the greatest of all time. Legends. They are so missed.
There is no one more talented than Lucy , her shows still hold up, if anything now they take you back to a world we all desire. But even on this tonight show she is an amazing woman, mogul, mother, comediene, and a force to be reckoned with.....love lucy
Ricky died in 86. He gave her 90% credit for the success of the show.
You mean Dezi
Desi 😄😊💛
A month after this interview ☹️
She went downhill pretty bad after that. The loss of him crushed her spirit.
She deserved it. But the two do them, Lucy and Desi were a terrific business team. Accomplished so much, basically invented the sit-com!
She's an absolute legend!
You’re welcome!
She was always so gorgeous.
I'm now watching the I Love Lucy series once again, making it probably the 10th time over 50 years & still laugh so hard I almost cry on some of the skits. It's hard to believe how absolutely funny the (4) of them together were.

My friend and I saw Josn Rivers in December 1984 and she interviewed Lucille Ball, Sandy Duncan, Morgan Fairchild and i tbink Betty White. It was a great show! We had no idea when we arrived that morning to pick up tickets that we were going to see Lucy! :) ❤❤❤
Thank you for sharing this truly fantastic and so honest and forthright interview. Joan was a great interviewer in those days, giving Lucy the room to truly think about and reply. Two of the great women comedians of all times, and both trailblazers along with Bette White, another TV woman comedian, who paved the way for women.
Man, I Love Lucy was my whole childhood. She was everything. Still is. What a classy old broad!!!
I would watch Lucy in any interviews or shows of any kind. What you have is not only a great actress and comedian, but a first woman CEO of a studio in Hollywood……nobody’s done it since. She’s wildly talented and very very smart, just listen to how she handles herself. I love Lucy ❤️ Both of them, the character and the real woman!!
I love this lady. She married a Cuban latino and got shit for it and she didn't gaf about it. She was funny, humble and talented most of all😍😍

Lucille's production company gave us Star trek, that lady deserves to be a Goddess in the hereafter.
You're right. Desilu also brought us , Andy Griffith, and MISSION IMPOSSIBLE. That blockbuster movie franchise has Desilu to thank. Desi Arnaz was actually the genius behind it. He developed the concept of filiming in front of a live audience, His ideas on use of multiple cameras and set design are used today on sitcoms with studio audiences. Brilliant they were.
Lucy and Desi Arnaz were amazing. They worked an act together and traveled the country performing. America loved them. That's why he was cast as her husband. Rest us history. Look up Desilu.
She was also a very capable business woman ,hard worker who demanded people work as hard as she did. She was a very intelligent woman who knew her fans and her craft.
