    She's a beauty John - You could says she's real Purdey ;-)
    When I bought my 2010 XK a few months ago and came to give it it's first wash, I noticed lots and lots of fine swirl marks all over the bodywork and quite a few scratches across the rear wings / wheel arches, probably where a petrol pump hose had been dragged across from the near side to the filler pipe on the offside. I bought a dual action polisher from Halfords (about£70) and set about the swirls and scratches with Meguiar's Ultimate Compound and then 3in1 wax.
    Not only did the swirls and scratches come out to the point where they are no longer visible, even if you know where they once were, but the metallic spectrum blue paintwork is absolutely mirror-like now. Without doubt the best motoring 'investment' I've made in recent years.
    Looking forward to the further adventures of your new XK8!

      Ooh interesting Stevepitts18
      I may be in the market for a polishing machine soon. what brand was yours.
      did you not find yourselfelf adding circular marks? The fear of that is what has put me off till now.

    • @stevepitts18
      @stevepitts18 5 років тому

      Hi John
      I used a polisher many years ago and it did, as you say, make some horrible swirls, but the current breed of dual action polishers not only effectively remove swirls, water marks and light scratches / scuffs but don't leave any circular marks - if you make sure that the foam pad is clean of any grit, so a very thorough car wash is needed beforehand and start from the upper panels and work down, making sure periodically that no grit has found its way onto the pad.
      The last thing you want is to detail / polish half a dozen panels only to find that a tiny speck of grit has etched every one.
      I bought the Halfords own brand polisher when it was on special offer with 15% off a few months ago.
      www.halfords.com/motoring/car-cleaning/polishers-steam-cleaners/halfords-dual-action-car-polisher.
      Just noticed that Argos do one for £40 which looks pretty similar.
      Just look out for the dual action (the pad oscillates and rotates), rather than just orbital and variable speed is essential too, as you need to apply the compound / polish slowly at first and then build up speed to spread and polish. Then buff off with a microfibre cloth, stand back and admire your reflection.
      Tons of detailing vids on the Tube and I find Forensic Detailing channel pretty informative and honest.

    Hello John, a question is popping up, while watching your (again interesting) video. Did you never inspect your car on starting rust? I do, several times a year. When I do find rust, on some of the spots you do show here, I immedaitely start to scratch the rust away, and paint it over by a soft brush, in the colour my "mechanic" did deliver some time ago. (Water based, very bad smelling.)
    And beneath it a antirust primer, also with a brush. I do modelbuilding for many many years, so I do not have difficulty's with using a brush. On top of this, I paint a very high quality woodlack (!) used for boats... I did manage to restore with it, the scratches on the wooden steering wheel. (I did paint it over 7 times or so.) But is also good for protection againt water. (that's why it is used for boats) It has a sort of gleaming over it, in almost the same colour as the "Topaz" paint. Wich is usefull in my case. The surface of the lack, after a couple of days or so, is very solid.
    I had problems with the rearbumper, it was getting detached by rust. And yes, watching your video, it is good to look more under the car, besides the more common places wich can be seen, while inspecting starting rust. I am warned! (and other owners I guess.) :-)

      The majority of jags even in 2019 are bought in conservative colours because buyers are scared of choosing a colourthat they like, but which might hurt resale values. Hence the sea of Black silver and grey exec cars on our roads. At least the X100 was available with some brilliant colours even if only us discerning few a appreciated them.😁😉

    Thanks for another great video. What's your thoughts on the use of waxoil ? Applied in the known corrosion spots (before they corrode - for those with relatively rust-free cars) and inside sections that can hold water; could extend bodywork life considerably - perhaps?

    • @ToTheGarage
      @ToTheGarage  4 роки тому +1

      Good quality products applied well to cars in good condition certainly a good idea. cheap stuff or applied over corrosion or worse still moisture is like applying a rust poltice. mine is oiled underneath and other than it being on heat shields im pleased.

The general consensus is that the later 4.2 cars are a better purchase, due to the ealier issues being addressed. The classic x100 dilemma. I decided to restore mine (2004 XKR coupe) and it's costing a fair bit but I figured if I just bought a different one, I'd probably have to attend to the same problems anyway. (Luckily I am able to afford to do it). Mine is currently in the bodyshop for the rear arches (which weren't as bad as expected) and a full spray. They're also repainting all the trims for me whilst they are off the car, luckily in good condition so no replacements needed. I already had the floor pan (one small hole on passenger side) done a while ago and I've had some underside corrosion issues repaired too, both subframes came down. Not cheap but cheaper than the £25K people are asking for top notch cars. Mine is a 2004 so I had the added issue of not knowing what we'd find under the plastic side skirts. Again, it wasn't too bad. I'm hoping to have it back soon after a 3 month (garage closed due to covid) delay. Can't wait to drive it. It hasn't been on the road since last September. BTW I'm not doing this expecting to get my money back. I just love the car.

    Such a shame. I had a 2002 XKR and it was immaculate because I didn't just wash and polish the paintwork but always pressure washed the car underneath the wheel arches especially the top of the inner arches where mud/road dirt can gather and keep moisture to errode the body. Take off the inner wheel arches and clean behind and treat with wax oil type compounds. Equally inject inside doors, sills and box sections. I did mine once a year.. Good paint shop will easily respray your bumpers/nose cones off the car and match perfectly with modern paint mixing facilities. Mine was absolutely immaculate inside, outside and underside. Easily done for any DIY types. All cars pre galvanising processes were introduced suffer but the X100 XKR is a superb car. Check early cars if they have any loss of compression because of cylinder liner issues. Nearly all cars by now will be well past the times when petrol was crap and damaged the linings. Go get one and a cherished one.

    love your videos. However, my 1987 Porsche 944 came from factory with similar stone chip paint (and 'decals' in front of rear wheel swell) - that stone chip paint is not worth noting on a 1997 car.

      @ToTheGarage  4 роки тому

      thorman944 thanks for watching. Genuinely learnt something there. Porsche were and are well known for quality and longevity though so I suppose I should not be surprised that they would be adding protection way ahead of the majority. Those Decals are interesting as well

    So.... you are getting rid of your beloved car because you didn't take care of it.... Maybe try placing it in the garage when not in use... and fix your audio...

    I want to shake this guy to speed him up. He takes a half hour to convey 10 minutes of info. It just slowly creeps out.
