I had the near side rear caliper seize yesterday, came off the motorway and the stink was terrible, not sure if it is the caliper piston or slider pins. I have all parts arriving tomorrow so I will find out what the problem is.
Joel's Stuff I ended up buying new cables, front to rear and also the two that go to each caliper, the handbrake return spring was missing from the end of the front to rear cable, as was the plastic adjuster. Replaced the pads, the near side caliper (OE) and slider pins, including new slider pin boots. Also changed the brake fluid. Should be good for a few more years. Front calipers next!
I feel your pain! I'm moving onto fronts next too. My offside front keeps sticking on and i have to whack it with my lug wrench to unstick it at least once a week. The Joys of driving a 20 yr old van!
Joel's Stuff Forgot to mention it was a seized slider pin £10 part ha ha, still, I think after almost 20 years it is a good idea to overhaul the entire braking system.
Been watching all your T4 videos, cutting metal, grinding metal, welding, painting and what not .................... all very macho stuff. Until I noticed your pink fluffy girly steering wheel cover! I just had to laugh mate ; ) I mean that in the best possible way by the way mate, your personal preferences are really not my business ................... looks pretty comfy thought ; ) TURK
@@JoelsStuff Just get yourself a nice black suede one, that way when it gets dirty you won't even notice it! And they're nice and warm during the winter ; ) I got rid of my 'trucker' style steering wheel years ago, got myself a nice sporty Momo steering wheel for my T4. TURK
I see your rear discs shiny. Mine rusts away about every 2 years. Is this car in Europe? The brakes here work 70% in front and 30% rear with the brake regulating valve sorting that out.
@@JoelsStuff My rear discs dont get thin, they just rot away. I am on my second set of front brake discs and the fifth set on the rear. Total mileage of 190,000 km. Tried the brembo, Sachs, Zimmermann, NK and now the TRW I put on summer 2018. They are dark but smooth after I lubed the sliders.
I drove my t4 with the handbrake on a few timea briefly and quickly released it. But now my handbrake doesnt work at all. Ive tried taking up the slack in the centre cable but still no good im wondering if the caliper lever needs resetting or something.
E Dar Not too sure I’m afraid. I’m not aware of any way of resetting the lever, but I’m not the best person to comment. If your service brake works fine but handbrake does not work on either wheel then it sounds like a problem with the handrake/cable rather than the calipers
Just done mine on a T5 but it's just the same. However, it's advised not to use copper grease on anything that moves, like those pins. I used MTB grease for them. Its a super simple job!
spot on that, cheers mate.
'One man' with no friends, ;-) excellent! Cheers.
That’s me! 😊
Hi there...I know its been a long time now, how was the caliper after?.. also where did you get it from? Thanks...
all the salt used during winter on the roads will make them look crap

What a nightmare! Pretty easy fix though hopefully!

I’m in england. I’ve had this van for 3 years now and I had to change all 4 discs last year as they were too thin
