Pulled 60mph in 1st gear at 3:58 which ain’t too shabby! I’m an ST4S owner (same bike but extra 20hp). My advice is stay above 3k rpm to avoid the engine chugging like Sean does at the start of his ride. Also these have no redline (see tacho) but power drops off around 9k revs! If ridden between 3 to 7 thousand revs this has awesome punch and a torque band that is addictive. Also, with factory Termignioni pipes fitted, the sound is distinctively a Ducati !!
Few things: The added engine displacement is due to the limits of the engine configuration, not the design. Twins have reached their max achievable power vs reliability and need added displacement to make the same power figures as inline 4's. Second, the single sided swingarm isn't lighter. The single sided swingarm was designed for fast rear wheel changes for racing, but they have to be heavily braced to reduce flexing. The double sided swingarm setup on the ST "s" models (aluminum on the ST4"s" and ST3"s" vs steel on the non "s" ST2, ST3, and ST4) is likely lighter than the single sided setup of the Ducati superbike in that era (Ducati 916, 996, 998). The ST3 is actually not the most powerful ST series bike, it has 3 valves per cylinder to pass Euro emissions regulations. The most powerful ST was the ST4s, which featured the engine from the 996 Superbike. The ST4s is considered a Superbike with bags, as it was very heavily focused on sport rather than touring. The ST3 was a bit tame compared to the ST4 and ST4s, but was still pretty sporty. Just a couple things. Great video!
yeah ducati didn't see moving forward with a twin due to euro 6 regs, more than anything, i think some of the twins were pumping out over 200hp by the end of the era..even my 696 makes more hp than a new 796, all due to pollution ..thing is it adds weight, and burns more fuel, so any Corbyn emissions that would have been saved is negated , bike's spit out next to nothing in nx, and co2 , 1/200th of a bus.. crazy..
I HAVE A ST3s, 2007, AND LOVE IT , I INSTALLED , NOLOGY COILS , WIERS AND " BRISK " EVO SPARK PLUGS , IT HAD SO MUCT POWER I DROPPED 3 TEETH ON THE REAR SPROCKET AND STILL HAVE ALL THE POWER AND BETTER MPG FOR LONG TRIPS ! AND AT 71 , STILL LOVE THE ROLL ON POWER !
Good review. Some of these Ducati's came with crazy low sprockets. Big improvements to them can be made with better tires and changing the sprockets.....down one in front to 14 and or up 2 in the back to 40.....giving you a final drive ratio of 2.86. Another good combination is 15 front, 43 rear.......final drive ratio 2.87. What you get is better acceleration and better around-town driving plus very minimal loss of mileage, if at all. And...no more stalls at stop lights. Stock, these bikes will easily do 145mph....way too fast for anything but the track.
ya I had a bigger rear on my st4/916, and went down to a 14toother on my monster, monster got the biggest benefit from it, bikes much much much better as a result.. St4, is less lazy out of slow corners around town..Stock they gear them to max speed.. so rubber and gearing is the first thing to go.. the next thing is to throw some pipes on her, and unleash that beautiful sound.. stock exhaust is heavy as sin, and you loose that wonderful bass in the tinniness , a set of Arrows set that strait , and tunnels are a joy, neighbors don't like me very much..
Gear indicator? The heck, that's for beginners. 😅 keep it above 3rpm, work on the cornering (got a stiff frame) and drive it in middle-sized curves, it will blast you away how wonderful it's riding.
haha totally , seems the same with every duc I've ridden, same w my 696, and st4.. runs like a bag of hammers, spits and chugs, 4 grand..and 80kmh, and the bike starts to come alive.. and you realize what they were getting at when they designed her.. so many times i rolled on to the highway at 150+ not even realizing it, just piss for these bikes..

Andrew Hansen Stock gearing works fine for me 🤷🏻♂️. Plenty of motorway this side of the pond where you can cruise at 130mph and eat the miles up.

I swapped the sprocket to make it better for US streets. I rarely do 90 mph.

You should'nt run under 3500 rpm! The engine doesn't like it
I have a ST4 and they are very nice to ride, comfortable and really quick for its age and setup. 👍👍
First Ducati was a st4s.....fantastic platform and engine!
Gear indicators? You're either in the right gear are either you're not.
Nice review and good riding!
You've not even been on a corner at any speed in this video dude, so make one n try it, show us u can actually ride as this video isn't the best tbh!!
Keep it above 4g man!

Loved my 2001 ST2!!! sold it with 205,000 miles on it !!!!😊😊😊😊😊😊
I believe it came with adjustable bars from the fact?
It does yes, I own one, in red of course lol! 😉
Not a V twin.
Are they pricey to maintain. Parts and labor . PTL. God is King .
You compare a sporty inline-4 with a torqueyy V-twin... You lost me there.
Top speed?
I've had 165mph from mine with more in the tank just I don't have the nuts to push further lol!

That's fast!
