Hi Andy, back in the early 80'sI had a lovely brand new Ducati Pantah which unfortunately, had the Italian 'out of warranty' sensor fitted. The regulator subsequently failed 1 month after warranty expired (it was the old single phase magnetic amplifier design). Just wanted to say as an old grumpy retired electronics technician, your diagnostic skills and logical approach are excellent and it's great to see you putting out content regularly (always enjoyable and informative to watch mate) Warm Regards from the Sandy Wastelands of WA
Thanks mate
Your head and shoulders above anyone else fella.
I don’t give a stuff about lighting sound etc , you give clear easy to follow and understand advice.
All done in a timely manor without fuss.
Motolectric makes kits for the starter circuit. Oversized wires. Easy to install. Makes a huge difference. My ST4S starts like a Japanese bike.
I really like the straightforward way you explain and diagnose Andy so keep doing what you do. 👍🏼👍🏼
Good finding diagnostics Andy! Glad you’re getting back on the tools!
Glad to know its not just honda that suffer with the same problem. My old hornet suffered with over charging. And so kept burning the live wire out. Royal..P.I.T.A.
Good old Italian bikes and their electronics!
And yet the last two reg/recs I had fail were on a Yamaha and a Triumph 🤔 I’m quietly confident that all of these kind of components are made in Asia 😉
Thanks Andy for the heads-up I got a Ducati st 4 year 2000 with 12600 Km’s on but your video is excellent because it just gives you that information about the bike
Hi Andy,
Love the videos on the ST3 especially.
Could you do a video about using Guzzidiag diagnostics with the ST3 ?
Keep up the good work.
I no longer own the ST3.
Good vid Andy. Anyone who's been riding for a number of years will have been caught out by failed reg/rec. I know I have in the past. The other thing to check is the condition of the terminals in the stator wiring connection. I've seen some that are burnt and one where the bike caught alight while being ridden, I kid you not!
I had a similar problem om my 916 but luckily it was just the Lucas 2 pin plug that had melted. I believe its a common issue with a lot of the early Dukes it was there weak link so to speak
In a 12V car or motorcycle, 12.07 may as well be DEAD FLAT - a good hot charged battery in a vehicle with a working charging system will be 12.6 or higher when you check it, not running, normally a battery has 6 cells and they are 2.1volts each
Looks like a great meter.
Now and again Deutsch connectors can and do fail, a "wiggle test", can sometimes find it might be a connector problem. They like everything on a motorcycle that is prone to vibration can fail. I hope this helps someone.
A single copper strand from an electrical wire fed through the little hole in a spade connection can make a difference and get you home.
I fitted a volt meter/usb slot with a fused switch on my VFR as it's a common boogy man issue to have the receiver/rectifier go south...
Love the video as always! I'm not sure how much editing you do for audio but you may want to consider turning the gain down on your microphone when recording and then possibly bringing the volume back up in post. I could be wrong but it sounds like the audio is clipping really badly but usually means that the gain is turned up too high on the microphone.
Yeah the mic gain was too high. I tend not to check it prior, and it’s not something that I want to re film, so it is what it is.
Good stuff Andy.
As a motorcycle mechanic and an avid enthusiast, I highly recommend a volt meter display fitted to the bike in the dash area so it can be monitored at any time.
I don’t even look at the speedo 😕 I have one on my XS11, it didn’t save me.
Have you though about fitting a little voltage display somewhere on the dash/fairing, just so you can keep an eye on what's going on? There's a Shindgen Mosfet reg/rec I fit on my bikes, will have to dig out the number. I put a little weatherproof switch so it wasn't on all the time.

More power to ya mate 😂good luck 👍
Battery or starter
I use have a similar problem Multi Strada 1000 in the I use to carry a pair of jump leads with me - to the engine and + to the starter motor
Good work👌
These regulators have failed on both Ducatis I've owned. The first one ruined my plans to watch the world supers at PI. Good times.
Mosfet reg. claims improved componentry.
I thought "not starting" was a feature on a Ducati? ;-)
my st3 turns on with the key but everything shuts off when I press the start button (and doesn't start). Lights, etc come back/reset in 10 secs/repeat. Thoughts?
thanks.
Problem rectified, I hope it doesn't happen regularly.
lol
The starter and the coils take so much power out of the battery
As it’s a duel spark take a set ht leads of and see if that works
👍🔧🏍
Fix pizza hotbox on the back an use it to deliver pizzas thats all there good for.
I know what's wrong with it.
DUCATI
Hope that makes sense?
Ouch 😢
Crank position sensor?
Get yourself a mosfet reg/rectifier. You can thank me later.
I have never had an Italian bike, but I hear that electrics is a weak point?
TBH I've heard more tales of woe about Suzuki and Honda reg/recs on 70s, 80s and 90s bikes.
@@NotNowCato1254 Perhaps, but I am talking to the owner of a Ducati.
They aren't great. Best fix is to put in a high quantity regulator and don't do any mods to wiring
No more than other makes
