THANKS FOR THAT MATE!! AN HONEST 'LAYMANS' ASSESSMENT. HAVE JUST BOUGHT A 1997 VERSION WHICH WAS A JAPANESE IMPORT WITH 38K'S ON THE CLOCK. IT RESIDES WITH MY R1100S & A GOOD STABLEMATE IT IS TOO.
Also remember that the stator has 2 wires. Single phase. There are quite some changes fromm 1999 onwards. Just worth checking parts very carefully. The 1999 st2 has 3 wires from stator. 3 phase !

I believe max power @ 8500rpm and redline (even though it's not marked as so on the tachometer) is 9000rpm. I definitely wouldn't take it to 11!
So how bad is the maintenance on it I found one for $4k us$ with almost 29,ooo miles
I would say that every nut and bolt plus would beed to be checked. It all depends how it was serviced prior. There is servicing and proper servicing.
